Design project - Saint Joseph, MI

Notes: Foreground Building Studio, a prequel to Integrative Design Studio, focuses on the design of a public and/ or civic building in the physical and cultural setting of a traditional small town or urban neighborhood. I chose to develop a YMCA for a prime location, overlooking Lake Michigan, in the city of Saint Joseph, MI. Several weeks are spent on research including, but not limited to: case, demographics, context, material, altitude/azimuth, and parking studies; YMCA history; touring other community centers; daylighting, and energy analysis. Preliminary design is done with traditional hand drawings, which were converted to BIM utilizing Revit software in Integrative Design Studio. This comprehensive building design project includes: site design, building design, development of architectural details (including integration of materials, structural, and environmental systems), programming, and material selection. Hand Drawing were used for NCARB accreditation.

Notes: As a continuation of Foreground Building Studio, Integrative Design Studio is an in-depth consideration of building systems, their relationship, and further development of the buildings design and design development. My YMCA scheme works within the context of the surrounding buildings—materials and first level stores and shops. The building is 89,000 square feet spread over five stories and includes 264 parking spaces hidden behind shops and below grade that replace the current 60. Some building features: a gym, running track, two pools, saunas, tennis and racquetball courts, weight and cardiovascular training, aerobics, cafe, and childcare. Structural engineering was completed with knowledge gained in Andrews Structures courses. Additionally, I completed a building analysis with Autodesks’ Ecotect and engineered a HVAC system for the entire building. Revit sheets and renderings were used for NCARB accreditation and are on display at Andrews University.

Campus documentation was a Summer Intern project to convert all Andrews University buildings into Revit Models and place fire, safety, and security, equipment within the BIM model. This complex, Burman Hall, was my project. Blueprints were only available for the original four buildings. I converted the new fifth tower from CAD floor plans, numerous site visits for field measuring, and photographs. The entire project was completed in just 117 hours. Construction knowledge and familiarity with blueprints aided the quick processing time. Additionally, site visits led to the discovery of many design changes that were not in the blueprints for the original four buildings, which, I corrected giving the university an accurate set of prints.

The 2011 Urban Design Studio focused on an urban design project for Berrien Springs, MI. The project required students to demonstrate a synthesis of historical and technical knowledge, formal skills, urban and civic sensibilities acquired in previous years of architectural education. The intent is to provide a municipality with a quantified master plan and vision for future growth, incorporating form-based codes verses traditional zoning. Twenty six students—six teams— completed the award winning project earning the 2012 CNU Charter Award, Grand Prize, in the academic division (fourth such award in the last five years). Students presented the completed project to the Village of Berrien Springs and Oronoko township. Book was used for 2012 NCARB university accreditation and project is on display at Andrews University.

Existing Photo of Proposed Neighborhood - (Chandra Williams/Team Member) The sheer size of our project, Red Bud, allows for a variety of uses as most of the Village of Berrien Springs would fit within its boundaries. Our group decided to divide the 250 acres into two 1/4 mile radius’; one, a traditional town center and the other, a highway influenced commercial center. We chose an agrarian philosophy that was inspired by the abundance of local agriculture and wineries. Our goal was to preserve agriculture, while curbing sprawls invasion of farm land, with a mixture of New Urbanism and agrarianism. The mixed-use town center with form-based codes coincides with the townships master plan and the commercial center would be a perfect anchor for the proposed sewer extension that will eventually cross US-31. 96 buildings consisting of: 47 residential homes, three multi-family, one commercial center, three civic buildings, 32 multi-use buildings, a farm (six buildings) and a lodge (four buildings) were designed and modeled in Revit—the balance of the project was done in Autocad, InDesign, and Photoshop*. * My jobs were: lead Architect, designer of streets and parking; and I designed 81 of the buildings, which I modeled 67 in Revit. Ultimately my scheme for the traditional town center and the pond resort area was used for the site plan.

The Craft Studio project consist of converting student hand drawings into Revit (BIM) models that can later be included in a student plan book. I researched and developed the program that students must adhere to when converting their drawings. This concept will also be integrated into upcoming Craft Studio classes. The program sets a minimum criteria of what the homes must include to satisfy a typical middle income family and contain a set level of sustainability. The designs contain many features that home buyers are requesting, which will increase the value of the home while reducing utility costs. I then converted my Craft Studio project into four categories; suburban and urban designs in both basic models and deluxe versions— this same format will also be used by future Practicum students. The entire project took 99 hours to complete. Some of the drawings are on display at Andrews University.

• Building cost will be a maximum of $200,000 (plus land) with sizes ranging between 1400 and 1800 square feet featuring an open-plan design. Primary target market home First Level Floor Plan buyers are adults 35-55 with 2-3 kids. Secondary target buyers are empty-nesters. Homes shall include; 2.5 baths, 3 bedrooms —one being a master suite (if possible on 1st floor) that includes a tub and a shower, two-car garage (attached preferred), rear deck, front porch, air conditioning, and built on a basement. Other home features should include; walkin closets, linen closets, laundry room (same floor as master suite), large kitchen with island, and a home office/study. All designs must emphasize energy efficiency in the overall design, especially: insulation, windows, and appliances. Simple, but effective low-cost sustainable design and green features must be incorporated to attract today’s home buyers. Details and features are more important than square footage. • Deductions include: detached garage (built at a later date) and slab-on-grade with frost-protected shallow footing. • Options include: fireplace and 9 foot first floor ceilings. • Optional features that payback over specific time period: Above garage apartment can supplement mortgage payment. • Each plan shall consist of four types: Urban and Suburban; and, affordable and upper-end features and options. Practicum Notes: The Carmel Hope Fellowship Church project is an addition to the original church designed by Andrews University student in 2009. I worked 419 hours on the project during the summer internship and Practicum programs. Construction documents were completed in 2012 by summer interns—work shown represents the project up until that time—22 pages of blueprints—done with Revit set up as a collaboration with fellow students. Jobs included: design development, structural design, material selection, and construction documents ranging from floor plans, elevations, sections, structural, plumbing, HVAC, to the finest details. Church structure is concrete slab-on-grade and basement, masonry block, and wood framing. The Addition is scheduled to be complete in the spring of 2013. Some of the drawings are on display at Andrews University.

Intro to Design Studio Notes: The intent of Introduction to Design Studio is to introduce students to formal composition, abstract architectural elements, and traditional proportioning systems and presentation techniques. It was also our first introduction to the transect. Two precedent study projects/ drawings supplied the environment for the Andrews University Recreational Center project. Equal time was spent on research that was used to incorporate numerous sustainable and green features while using limited technology as was actually drawing the complex. My recreational centers barn design fits within the context of the Southwestern Michigan’s farming community. Drawings were used for NCARB accreditation and are on display at Andrews University.

Placemaking Studio Notes: Placemaking Studio builds upon lessons of previous studios but also emphasizes the making of compelling spatial and architectural relationships that speak to our human nature and connect us to surroundings and to each other. The course project proposed converting a shopping center and office complex, located along the St. Joseph River in Niles, MI, into a usable urban space that draws people to the city center and the rivers edge. Site requirements included a chapel, meeting hall, farmer’s market, mixed-use buildings, library, and exterior gardens. My design was the only scheme that placed the semiprivate space in the center of the site flanked by private buildings— mixed-use faces the street matching the context of Niles—townhouses face the river—all increase the cities tax base while providing the site owner a greater return on their investment. Model is on display at Andrews University.

Notes: My Craft Studio class studied precedent-setting architecture in the historical traditional Heritage Hills neighborhood in Grand Rapids, MI. Each student then designed a traditional home, for an empty corner lot, that fits the context of the area, and met a specified criteria, which included: homes between 14001800 square feet (mine is 1400), two story, detached garage with living space above, front porch, rear patio/ garden area, three bedrooms, ADA entry, etc. The structure is timber framed with SIP panels that I took one step further by making sure my American Four Square design could easily be converted to stick framing. Drawings were displayed at Andrews University.

Custom Single Family Home Design Project - Heritage Hills, Grand Rapids


Background

Building Studio Notes: The course is described as: understanding the nature of background buildings with design focusing on residential and/or commercial buildings in a traditional small town or urban neighborhood. Following a precedent study and project, I applied the precedent information to class projects located in the city of Niles, MI. These included a flex and corner flex mixed-use buildings and row houses done with a variety of media—pencil, colored pencil, water colors, and SketchUp. Although not required, I engineered the structural system (with knowledge gained in structures class) for all of my designs. Commercial buildings include features that allows natural daylight to flow deep into building while reducing the suns intensity during the summer months. Row House drawings are on display at Andrews University.
