The MALAYSIA Street Real Time Truths

Views on celebrities are not identical Two distinct groups emerge (1) Eye Candies: They are mostly made up of teens 15-19 years. They are crazy about Korean celebrities, and are fanatics with celebrities like Girl Generation, CN Blue, DBSK, where „beauty attract‟ plays a critical trigger. Social networking sites are the key in connecting them with their favorite celebrities. They express their support by buying the original CD, watch their movie/drama/concert, pasting posters, joining fans club, follow promo tour… you name it., they have done it! I love DBSK (Korean Boy group). I bought all their albums, always take part in fans club activities n like u said I paste their posters all over my room so I can see their face everyday... i just too crazy about them! ~ Nur Ilani Zulaikha, 16 years

… buy their original CD or merchandises. add them in facebook/twitter. follow them in the blogs to get the latest info on them. ~ Ahmad Khir, 20 years

When i was much younger, the four walls of my room, including the doors belongs the posters of the celebrities that i like ~ ph_low, 21 years

I bought their albums from Korea, watch almost every single performances they performed, check out their twitters, joined their fans club and go online to search for their latest news. ~ Ken Ke, 17 years

I got more than 50 photos and videos of Coco Rocha on lappy also I always follow her twitter and facebook to get her latest news… XOXO ~ Muhammad Saiful Zayanni, 20 years

(2) Role Models: They are made up of more mature group who wants more than just looks from celebrities. They are less obsessed and see celebrities just as human. They look up to those with talents, set to be role models and unique in their own way. They will listen, see and connect with them online but don‟t expect them to spend money just because of a face on the cover of a poster! They are the one who do most of the online download. Names mentioned include Brangelina, Oprah, DiCaprio, David Tao, Jay Chou, Z Chen, Kenny G, Kelly Clarkson.

I don‟t buy their CD because it is waste of money. all I do is listen to their songs via online streaming and sometimes I will discuss about them with my friends. To look for their latest activities, I will keep tap on their blog and their social networking, such as twitter and facebook. ~ ph_low, 21 years

…after all they are just people who have the fame and spotlight of the media. Once in a blue moon i will check for their updates, watch their movies, but i will only do it if it is something that attracts me, and not so of the celebrity who involve in the scene. ~ Suet Ling, 21 years

Honestly, buy their cds? Maybe, but I usually take the easier way out; the internet and it's freebies. ~ Wesley, 21 years

TRUTH BITES • Similar „truth‟ of youth behavior in 1980s. Youth idolizes entertainers for e.g. musicians, actors (posters, concert, etc) with the exception that nationality of these idols have shifted from West to the East (due to exposure of more variety of Asian entertainment e.g. Korean idols since the 90s) • Similar natural human growth experiences that youths go through with the exception that medium exposure / communication is different

The MALAYSIA Street Real Time Truths

Emerging power of new media. Embrace it! Gadgets and digital platforms that provide means of connection and enrich personal interests. “New Media” – what the youth says…

The MALAYSIA Street Real Time Truths

time is the BEST! Best time of the day? For me its around 3-6 in the morning. haha. Its cause I can do whatever I like and be alone (everyone is sleeping so I can do crazy little stuff). ~ Hee, 7 years

I'd love night time when I have the chance to spend time with friends and to chit chat or chill for all night. ~Emily, 19 years

I guess the best time is when everything is over , I mean when school finishes or whatsoever ~ Muhammad Shairazi, 18 years

…(source online contest) emenang forum or malaysiancontest blog. GSC.com.my and cinemaonline for those who wanna have free movie ticket and merchandise. I use to say 'may the force be with me' when entering Q&A plus slogan contest. Now trying to enter Facebook 'like' contest ;P ~ Akmal Rosely, 22 years

Facebook, currently lots of company do contest through Facebook and nice presents like iPad, if you notice it, and have lots of contest-freaks outside there... ~ Pui Ban Leong, 21 years

TRUTH BITES

Mostly feel that night/midnight is the best time of the day. PC/laptop is always their best mate for playing games, taking part in online contests, socializing…

• Dining and watching a movie alone will still attract curious stares and pity, making people feel uncomfortable/ unacceptable. • Most „me‟ time are being spent with some sort of a community or another (social media, forums, online games)

I want to sleep and log on when I am free! Free time. emm.. usually I do online visit to social networking side, news, sports web, download forum or do blogging. Playing games only applicable if I am in holiday. ~ Akmal Rosely, 22 years

I am always with my laptop, surfing the internet ~ Wilhelmenia, 22 years

My free time is always either being online or sleeping. ~ ph_low, 21 years

The MALAYSIA Street Real Time Truths

Job description: Must be a multi-tasker! Digital world has certainly enabled multi-tasking. If you do a count, there were up to 6 tasks taking place at once! Let‟s see how they have done it:

Thank Bill Gates or whoever for making Alt+Tab possible. XD ~ Jhun Hoe, 19 years

haha...yea…I multi-task alotz... msn-ing + assignment + music + FACEBOOKING :D ~Yi Zheng, 19 years

multitasker :D facebooking + revision + blogging + twittering + smsing + listening to music xD! ~ Richard, 19 years

well...yeah… I can watch movie while surfing the net...lol but concentration was definitely not there... ~Joanna James, 23 years

…while browsing the forums, my music will be in the background. while watching the tv, the comp will be next to me, chatting with a friend, and... If I am watching a show streamed online, it will occupy half of the screen, while the other half is for chatting. And while doing all those, I will be sms-ing if there are any incoming messages. Or sometimes, just leave every on to reply to emails, facebook messages as well as leaving a word or two at twitter. ~ ph_low, 21 years

TRUTH BITES • Multi-tasking youths are collecting information on wide range of topics but not in-depth information and doesn‟t delve deeply into any one subject • Youths are spending more time looking at screens: mobile phones, computers and televisions.

The MALAYSIA Street Real Time Truths

Friends: Absolutely essential! Friends are absolutely essential to youth, especially close friends who give them conformity and building up their self worth. They treasure every simple things that they do together.

FRIENDS are like salt. Without them our life gonna be tasteless. ~ Akmal Rosely, 22 years

Most of the outings are also done with close friends as we feel comfortable and our self esteem is raised with their presence :D ~ Yi Zheng, 19 years

... (being with close friend) we know what each other want and we are comfortable for being who we want to be and crack stupid jokes and stuff… ~ Suet Ling, 21 years

friends are your family that you can chose. ~ Sabrina, 19 years

The reason that friends are important is so you can have someone to talk to if you don't want to go to your parents ~ Muhammad Saiful Zayanni, 20 years

Knowing new friends is as important. It is fun and exciting. However, boys tend to have difficulty to affirm a close friend or if they have any, unlike girls.

“I enjoy hanging out with new friends and love to meet new friends.” ~ Lene, 19 years

“best friend, emm.. I dont know if I have one.. LOL..” ~ Akmal Rosely, 22 years

I like meeting new people and knowing more about them...like they say...you cant have one too many :) ~ Joanna, 23 years

“as for my best friends..i have known them for 13 years and basically we do everything together.” ~ Suet Ling, 21 years

“Best friend... Erm I don‟t‟ think I have one. xD” ~ Jhun Hoe, 19 years

TRUTH BITES Introvert Youths • See friends as impermanent, friends come and go. • Understand that virtual friends whom they met online tend to be unreal. • Hanging out in a bigger group could make them feel uneasy as they don‟t feel self-assured. Bigger groups usually have an alpha person who is more domineering.

The MALAYSIA Street Real Time Truths

iPhone – fans and skeptics slug it out! Apple products are cool! (Even though they are quite 'selfish' in some ways - they live in their own world using their own programmes xD). iPhone is still a unique product for me now but maybe not in the future unless iPhone kills Android. ~ Ken Ke, 17 years

I would say I really respect it as a brand. How they are able to market their products all over the world, and they bring a whole new meaning to communication. … Who wouldn‟t want to get their hands on such a great product? ~ Sabrina, 19 years

Those who loved the smartphone accept its faults and loved its unlimited capabilities.

Skeptics This groups thinks that people are too blinded by the brand and not fully evaluating their options. Rivals in the market managed to create value among them and grab share. To them, iPhone has lost its uniqueness.

iPhone has been a trend. same goes to blackberry until some people didn‟t notice there are other smartphone that on the same level as them such as Samsung wave/galaxy, Nokia e, or Sony Ericsson Xperia and etc.. and its much more cheaper.. because of that I opt not to buy iphone and bought Samsung wave.. Thus, now I realize, iphone is not unique anymore even for iphone4. ~ Akmal, 22 years

I think iPhone or the Apple brand used to be the branded stuff and only the wealthy could afford it, but now it seems diff. Anywhere u walk u could c some1 tapping on their iphone/ipod etc etc. … I think iPhone really is a unique phone, a pioneer to its kind, but not in the future as other brands are also coming wif product tht could rival of iPhone. ~ Yi Zheng, 19 years

Costs vs. Features They have also alerted the youngsters to be aware of other costs that gets bundled in with the iPhone in maximise its capabilities. TRUTH BITES … some just bought without realizing the actual cost to have and use a smartphone especially student and kids nowadays i.e. a postpaid and monthly internet pass subscription ~ Akmal, 22 years

• iPhone fans are more forgiving despite the limitations of the smartphone • Apple has „leapfrog‟ smartphone standards causing many brands to be competitive and creative • iPhone may not be a new creation (evolved from the Mac/iTouch‟s technology) but it is still ahead of competition on „coolness‟.

It’s you and me and what fills the gap in between Most important features are SMS and mobile internet Texting. I send many many many many many textes. I text when i'm in class, when i'm bored, when i'm driving... i text ALOT. even more than calling. ~ Sabrina, 19 years

of coz it would be Texting~!!, been texting non-stop ever since i got the phone, avg record of 1000++ msg per mth XD, but i think now reduce to about half ad ~ Yi Zheng, 19 years

I‟m ready to connect, just not ready to spend as for the most important. WIFI i guess? will go online to cure the boredom =D ~ Suet Ling, 21 years

fb, twitter etc.. but rarely using them with 3gs as they are expensive.. On only if wifi is around. ~ Akmal, 22 years

wireless :) able to use them to connect to the internet to tweet, facebooking :D, and foursquaring xD! ~ Richard, 19 years

Other features: camera, calendar/diary, games even the pic isn‟t so clear, but the memory is there, snap snap snap, always,

filling my 'waiting' time with a bunch of 3d games.. so syok!! ~ Akmal, 22 years

every day is important and as human we tend to forgot.. so take note every day..

TRUTH BITES • Youth chose to use sms / text-ing as the form of communication as they are able to express themselves better via smses • Smses are usually „light‟ and „fluffy‟; and is a form of „sembang (chat)‟ (as compared to topics on phone calls) • Places (cafes, restaurants) with WiFi accessibility (especially free) are usually crowded, not everyone is ready to spend on mobile internet charges

Plugged in, tuned out, every moment has a soundtrack to it. Friends and radio are main sources of discovery. While Facebook, Youtube, blogs and websites are great sources for downloads. Friends and radio. but radio being most of the time. FlyFm would be my fav radio station as they play all the latest hits songs, and apart from that lots of 'additional info' would be shared by the Dj;s. I also listen to Onefm as they have all the really nice Chinese songs that are really emotional ;p ~ Yi Zheng, 19 years

I usually download and burn my own CD. erm... hitz.fm, red.fm, 988, my.fm ~ Jhun Hoe, 19 years

TRUTH BITES • You don‟t need to know the language to love the music anymore. K-Pop is getting popularity amongst Malaysian youths. • Youths like to make their own music compilation (1980s on tape; today on CDs).

Smartphone kills boredom! What is the benefits of having a Smartphone?

Social networking is a breeze. Staying connected with friends and family, and being in the know of new events is just a button away. And it‟s a great company for boring classes. OOH and it practically does everything a laptop does. Just that you cant save files. ~ Sabrina, 19 years

I don‟t have any and I don‟t want to have any. Cos I love my old phone :). And I don‟t not really know how to use the technology very well :) ~ Shairazi, 18 years

Well social networking is simple with just one click away. I can post stuff at Facebook, Twitter and many more :D Especially during lectures, if it's boring I will start login to the social network and start posting how boring the lecture is and about… haha :D !! ~ Richard, 19 years

I have never thought of my phone as „smartphone‟. Maybe cuz it was being advertised as a „business phone‟ …it gives the owner a tool to fiddle with when bored or when needed update of the cyberworld? ~ ph_low, 21 years

1. Show off!! Haha! 2. Makes telco provider like Maxis, DiGi, etc. richer.. 3. Got another bill at the end of a month. 4.And other is of course... not bored because got many apps to play and test with!! ~ Akmal, 22 years

TRUTH BITES • Smartphone mobilizes social networking. We no longer need to rely on a desk/laptop. • Smartphone is a gadget that youth inspired to have, but not for those who are not technology savvy.

What we see is what we get ? Not! Which is your favorite fast food & why?

McDonald‟s • Popular • Strategic location (near college) • Convenient • Inconsistent quality of food in different outlet • Cheap, especially for lunch KFC • Love the fried chicken • The ads have exaggerated the size of food too much

[McD] One may have crappy chicken burgers while another has really good ones. ~ Sabrina, 19 years

[KFC] They're advertisements shows nuggets and chickens the size of your palm where else the real thing is crazy small. ~ Sabrina, 19 years

Subway • Healthy & good taste • Something different

[SUBWAY] My fav is the meat ball and turkey ham one.. yours yours? ~ Sabrina, 19 years

Burger King • Good taste • Love onion rings • Over priced • Dirtier outlet • Alternative to McD with more choices Carl‟s Junior • Worth the money • Satisfactory • Expensive but mouthwatering Dominos • Cheaper than Pizza Hut • No delivery charges • Love Chickstix

[McD] All time favourite, super cheap price for lunch! ~ Ken Ke, 17 years

[SUBWAY] Once in a while I try it but it is more delicious compared to McD ~ Peng Yew, 21 years

[A&W] My old time favourite, one of my choice since i was a kid. ROOOOT beer...kanpai!! ~ Akmal, 22 years

A&W • Old time favorite • Love Root Beer Kenny Roger Roasters • Expensive Pizza Hut • Bad service • „Malaysian‟ taste • Good promo • Inconsistent quality of pizza

TRUTH BITES • Youth goes for price and convenience; „premium‟ fast food is only an occasional treat but it must be value for money • Believe in „what you see is what you get‟ • Healthy option fast food is getting more consideration

A qualitative study conducted by Starcom MediaVest Group based on real time conversation with Malaysian teenagers

The MALAYSIA Street Real Time Truths

Of flexibility and friends… (Telcos and phone plans) Parents play a huge role in choosing the mobile service provider for youths. Else, friends are also the key influencers for choosing or switching service provider.

Some take the hassle to carry multiple SIMs to complement each other.

I use Maxis. My mum made the choice for us . The only reason I will consider to switch telcos is when all my friends switched to others telcos. ~ Ken Ke

But actually it is good to have all of the telco sim as some place can‟t be reached by some telco.. That‟s why in my house, we got maxis, celcom and digi.. waiting to have tunetalk and umobile sim. ~ Akmal

With allowance limitations, youth seeks for more flexibility mobile plan. Tying them up with the credit top-up is definitely a no-no.

“I love that the account will be active for a period of 5 years even without top-up. Unlike DiGi which terminated my line when I didn't top-up for 3 months only.” ~ Wei Lin

I use DiGi, basically its my mum that got it for me, ~ Yi Zheng

I guess because of the cost of call n sms...if they got sms from maxis..they reply with maxis..stuff like that...its cheaper right dealing with the same telco... ~ Afiq

“I use Celcom U.O.X.. My account will be active until 2018 so no need to top-up every month n most of my friends use Celcom..” ~ Illani

Network coverage has been a concern for some youth, while they do acknowledge that some telco companies do offer attractive competitive rates. “so far in terms of services its quite ok, just that DiGi needs to expand their coverage network that‟s all :D” ~ Yi Zheng

“most of my friends use DiGi and DiGi has better rates and plans compared to maxis for example the new Buddyz” ~ Jhun Hoe

TRUTH BITES • • • •

Switching telco is a fuss and keeping all contacts are important. Switching could risk losing contacts. Parents are key decision maker of youths‟ phone plans . Many youths are part of their family plans. Multiple mobile phones in one household are quite common these days. Competitive rates doesn‟t equal attractive plans.
