FORTY EIGHT (48) Years In Education Celebrated
Mrs. Merlene Clarke’s dedication to generations of children recognised BY THE ELEUTHERAN NEWS TEAM
Cars, Trucks, and SUV’s streamed from the motorcade starting point at the South Eleuthera Emergency Partners (SEEP) location into the main township of Tarpum Bay, on Monday morning, February 20th, 2017, sporting balloons and streamers, and carrying a very special lady - all in celebration of almost fifty years served in educating generations of children in Central and South Eleuthera. A generalist primary teacher who taught grades three through six for much of her career, Mrs. Merlene Clarke who began as a young monitor back in 1967 at the Tarpum
Bay primary school, before being formally confirmed in 1968, taught for most of that time in Tarpum Bay, but also spent time teaching in Rock Sound. Since her retirement date of September 19th, 2016, she was recalled by the Ministry of Education as a “supply teacher” - a retired teacher rehired to fill a temporary posting. So, she also served at Emma Cooper primary school during the 2016 Christmas term, and in January 2017 was again called in to teach at the Governor’s
Harbour primary school during the 2017 Summer term, where she continues to contribute her expertise. As the motorcade came to a rest alongside the Tarpum Bay primary school grounds, Mrs. Clarke was escorted out Continued On Page 7

a Justice of the Peace (JP) at the Administrative Office in Governor’s Harbour by Administrator Joseph Ferguson for Central Eleuthera on Tuesday morning, February 7th, 2017 at 11am. Paula has made significant contributions throughout the island of Eleuthera and was elated to be selected for this esteemed position, which recognizes her leadership role in the community and affords a greater opportunity to serve the people of Eleuthera.
