WELCOME PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2009-2010 Dear St. Michael’s College School Community, The last school year witnessed the fulfillment of the strategic directions established for the school a few years ago. In April we opened our Centre for the Arts, a beautiful facility to showcase music and drama as well as painting and sculpture. Thanks to the generosity of our donors and the St. Michael’s School Foundation we were able to build a first rate venue that will enhance the educational opportunities for our boys for decades to come. We were also able to complete the expansion of our financial assistance program carrying out the promise of the Basilian Fathers to provide the kind of support that would enable bright young Catholic boys with the opportunity to attend St. Michael’s regardless of the financial circumstances of their families. This has been particularly welcomed by many Catholic families who are relatively new to our country. Finally, we laid out the completion of our strategic direction to transform St. Michael’s into a more nurturing educational community by adding a Centre for Pastoral Care. Opening in Sept 2010, the Centre will be headed by Fr. John Male CSB and will provide support for students facing personal challenges such as grieving the loss of loved ones, or dealing with family problems. Along with the Learning Assistance Centre it represents our commitment to helping students overcome the challenges that can jeopardize success. We thank God and celebrate these successes and ask for the continued guidance of the Holy Spirit as we seek new ways to improve our school community.

REPORT FROM THE CHAIR OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS 2009-10 It remains a great privilege to serve as Chairman of the Board of St. Michael’s College School. The Basilian commitment to education remains clear and strong through our work here. Surely a highlight of the part year was the launch of the new Centre for the Arts. With St. Mike’s enviable record in academics and sports, we now add a visible commitment to the Arts. This is a Catholic school for the twenty-first century.

“Surely a highlight of the part year was the launch of the new Centre for the Arts.” As partners with a faithful teaching, administrative and support service staff, the Basilian Fathers remain fully engaged to this great educational apostolate. Through faith and Christian culture, academic excellence and a great school spirit, St. Michael’s will continue for years to come as an outstanding Catholic educational centre in Toronto. May God bless you all.

Fr. Timothy Scott, C.S.B. Chair, Board of Governors

Last year also witnessed an important transition in the leadership of the school. Mr. Joe Brisbois completed nearly nine years of service and has moved on to other endeavours. Mr. Terry Sheridan, a St. Mike’s grad took over as Principal on January 1st and has already been bringing his perspectives to his leadership position at St. Michael’s. We wish these fine Catholic men success, health and God’s blessings in the future.

Rev. Joseph Redican President

FINANCIAL REPORT “I would like to thank the faculty, staff, parents and students at the school for making fiscal 2010 another successful year.” FINANCIAL REPORT FOR FISCAL 2010 FROM THE CONTROLLER’S OFFICE

Williams & Partners, Chartered Accountants LLP, have audited our financial statements for the year ended June 30, 2010 and they have expressed an unqualified opinion on the fair presentation of our financial statements For the fiscal year ended June 30, 2010 the School’s Current Fund had a deficit of ($880,475) from operations which is an improvement from last year. The improvement was mainly the result of increased enrolment (23 more students) and reduced building repairs and maintenance costs. Cost increases such as staff salaries and benefits and student bursaries were absorbed by the increase in tuition implemented for the 2009/10 school year. It should be noted that this loss was reduced by a contribution of $625,000 from the St. Michael’s College High School Foundation, as well as $403,321 from investments and rental income. The overall surplus for the School for the year was $147,846. The Scholarship Fund operating surplus was about $137,000 better than last year resulting mostly from an increase in donor support of about $120,000. The Building Fund increased revenues due to the implementation of the Capital Improvement Fee. The fee was applied to the construction costs of the new Centre for the Arts.

Arts, continues to focus on building and information technology improvements with $435,499 spent on School and arena improvements last year. The total cost spent on the Centre for the Arts was $12.3M. Managing cash flows will be our focus for the next few years now that the construction of the Centre for the Arts is now complete. With construction costs exceeding pledges, donations and contributions we will have to monitor cash flows closely and borrow funds as needed to meet commitments. Plans are in place to do so. As we look forward to the next school year we can see that the difficult economic times are lingering. Maintaining enrolment at current levels will be challenging. The School will continue to be fiscally responsible in setting tuition fees and controlling costs to ensure the viability of the school for years to come. Thank you all for your support. Yours truly,

Gino Saccone Controller

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE “The spiritual development of the young men who are a part of our community continues to be a focal point at St. Michael’s College School.” The 158th year in the College’s history witnessed a grand event and a milestone in its passing. In April of this year, the Centre for the Arts was officially opened and much credit goes to Fr. Redican, the many individuals who were involved in its design and construction, and the donors without whom the dream would not have been possible. The memorable night was a resounding success and all of the performers, under the direction of Marty Storey, were very deserving of the standing ovation they received. Shortly thereafter, tribute was paid to Joseph Brisbois, the first lay principal in the school’s history, as his tenure came to an end. Joe’s sense of community and professionalism were key components to the school’s success over the past ten years. Both of these events pay tribute to the wonderfully supportive community that is St. Michael’s and ultimately reflect the foundations of our school motto, goodness, discipline, and knowledge. The spiritual development of the young men who are a part of our community continues to be a focal point at St. Michael’s College School. The Basilian Fathers, faculty, staff, parents, and alumni, take the development of Catholic young men at the school very seriously. Not only is it about sharing our Church’s history and teachings, but transcending beyond this to something far more personal: our love for Jesus Christ. Helping and guiding our young men to live their faith in our contemporary world, be proud of it and develop into the Catholic leaders of tomorrow is the true goal of St. Michael’s College School. Whether it is done through school Masses, school curriculum, community service, retreat experiences such as that experienced by the grade eleven students, mentorship opportunities between the older and younger students at the Outdoor Education Camps or other co-curricular opportunities, St. Michael’s continues to demonstrate to all of its community members that the Catholic faith finds its life within each one of us and the actions that we take with and for each other. Academically, St. Michael’s College School continues to develop strong young men. About half of our student body attains honour roll standing, while most others are above seventy percent. This is a credit to their work ethic, family support, and the faculty. Without any of these pillars of education, success cannot be achieved. What is most inspiring about the young men in the building, and especially our graduates as they leave the yellow brick walls, is the wisdom that they seem to have at such a young age. As adults, we

The Leader in Catholic Boys’ Education

like to take credit for this and rightfully so, but much of the maturity and wisdom in these young men comes from the role modelling they do for each other. Good decision-making and an honest work ethic are the expectations that the students have for each other. Being a part of this type of environment enables everyone to strive for excellence. Cocurricularly, St. Michael’s continues to find success in all facets of its programs. Once again student commitment, faculty and staff coaching, and finally parent support are instrumental to these accomplishments. The Music and Visual Arts programmes continue to bring the College School many accolades as is seen through the wonderful feedback from Eastern Europe where the Senior Concert Band demonstrated its talent and from our local Arts Week displays that generated much enthusiasm and discussion. Not to be outdone, the Musical production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat played in front of sold out audiences and was a spectacular success in our new theatre. Furthermore, the many clubs in the school continue to provide opportunities for young men in the building to share their talents. This is highlighted by Destination Imagination where the teams once again challenged for World Championships and our Debate Team who continue to use rhetoric and wit to place well. Last but not least, the athletic programs in the school found much success as demonstrated by our Sr. Gaels who won OFSAA Lacrosse and many other OFSAA appearances including Sr. Volleyball, Sr. Basketball, Sr. Hockey, Skiing, Soccer, and Track and Field. As well, several CISAA Championships were won by our talented young men at the Under 14, Junior and Senior levels. The 2009/2010 school year at St. Michael’s was by all accounts very successful. Without the commitment of the Basilian Fathers, the faculty and staff, the parents, the students and the alumni, St. Michael’s would not have the success that it does. It is the ability of all of these community members to come together in the best interest of the school and the young men who fill its hallways, that ensures a positive future for St. Michael’s College School. Sincerely,

Terence M. Sheridan

CO-CURRICULAR HIGHLIGHTS CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES ANIME CLUB The Anime Club gathered every Thursday to enjoy the world of Japanese English-subtitles animations, while discussing animation techniques and visual styles. Members attended Anime North, an anime convention in Toronto. ART CLUB Thursdays after school in AS2 was a time to relax, listen to music and create art. Students of all ages and art talents dropped by throughout the year to either work on their class art projects or experiment with new art materials and techniques. Painting the sets and props for the musical "Joseph and the Technicolor Dream Coat" was also a great opportunity for students to work on a larger project. Art Club art was also displayed in the "Annual Art Exhibit" during May Arts Week. ASIAN ASSOCIATION The Association promotes Asian culture through dialogue with other schools. The club organized sports nights, skating events and volunteered at the Good Shepherd Refuge. BIGLIARDINO TOURNAMENT Hosted by the Italian Club, the Bigliardino Tournament saw more than 50 teams participate in this annual fooseball event. BLUE INSIDER The Blue Insider is the voice of St. Michael's. School activities, sports and events are highlighted in this monthly newsletter written by students for students. All grades are welcome to join our team of dedicated and enthusiastic reporters. BRISCOLA TOURNAMENT This year the Briscola Tournament was hosted by the Italian club and moderated by Mr. Di Leo. This tournament demonstrates the strength of the Italian spirit present in the yellow brick walls of St. Michael's. Thanks go to all those that participated and also to the Grade 12 Italian students for helping to organize the event. Congratulations to this year's winners M. Paolucci and M. Marsili. COMMUNITY OUTREACH For the past several years, St. Michael’s students have been helping to improve the lives of elementary students in needy areas of Toronto. Volunteers mentor students in literacy skills, reading, writing, mathematics, and homework completion. In 2010, our students donated some 300 hours to this valuable program. Weekly volunteers mentored 50 St. Alphonsus students. The program concluded with a graduation party where the St. Michael’s students presented their St. Alphonsus counterparts with SMCS ball caps.

DESTINATION IMAGINATION This program is the world’s largest problem solving competition. It taps into the different multiple intelligences of each student. Students learn to unleash their imaginations and take unique approaches to problem solving. This year five St. Michael’s Destination Teams participated in the Ontario Championships and three at the Global Finals in Knoxville, Tennessee. Two of the five teams finished in the top four. The other three teams had two first finishes and second respectfully granting them a birth at the Global Finals in Knoxville, Tennessee. This marks the fifth year St. Michael’s has sent teams to the Ontario Championships and three years where more than three teams have participated at the Global Finals. DUKE OF EDINBURGH CHALLENGE AWARD The Duke of Edinburgh Challenge Award was established by HRH The Prince Phillip to encourage youth, aged 14 to 25, to set goals for themselves in four areas - volunteer work, physical activity, outdoor expeditions and skill development. There are three award levels - Bronze, Silver and Gold. Students often start at the Bronze level in Grade 9 and can complete the Gold level by the time they graduate. FILM CLUB The Film Club focused on script writing, film production and film appreciation. Members were also involved in the production of videos for school events. FLASH CLUB Members of the Flash Club created video games and animation with Adobe CS4 Flash. The Flash Club created animation for both the Spirit Rally and the school musical this year. FRENCH CLUB The French Club serves to promote the French culture beyond the classroom atmosphere. The group meets about once every two weeks to eat in French restaurants, watch French films, prepare culinary treats and much more. Soyes les bienvenus! GAME MAKER CLUB Video games are everywhere these days. People play them by the millions, either from home consoles, or on the internet. It is one thing to play a game, and completely another to make one. That's what members of the Game Maker Club learned; how to make their own video games. Over the course of the year, members learned how to use the program Game Maker to create their own computer games. Game design is a unique challenge; it is as hard as you want it to be. It's also a lot of fun, the Game Maker club is as much about playing the games you make as it is making them in the first place. GOOD SHEPHERD REFUGE St. Michael’s students have been volunteering at the Good Shepherd Refuge for the last 16 years, serving food, making beds, and sorting food. GREEN COUNCIL The Green Council promoted the usage of sustainable transportation for Car Free Day, as well as hosted an anti-idling campaign in the pick-up and drop off traffic circle. The Council’s campaign encouraged drivers to turn off their engines while waiting to pick up their children. The Council also conducted a raffle to raise money for the World Wildlife Fund, which runs projects in environmental conservation.

DEBATE CLUB Debaters practice skills like impromptu speaking, examining a witness, rebutting an opponent and structuring a parliamentary style speech. Eight members competed at the McGill Debate Tournament. At the OSDU Metro Regional Tournament, the team earned a fourth place finish. In the Pro Con Debate League, the novice team captured the first place trophy.

IRISH CLUB The Irish Club is open to all students who wish to learn about Irish culture. This year the club's major accomplishment was to raise funds for Haiti relief through a raffle. The prizes (Leafs and Raptors tickets) were donated by Ben Clune, Will New, and Ryan Cairns.

DECA The Developing Excellence Celebrating Achievement (DECA) competition is a marketing and business competition that molds high school students into character-driven leaders. In its inaugural season, the DECA team enjoyed modest success by qualifying 7 students to the provincial championships. The team hopes to build on this year's experience for next season's competitions.

ITALIAN CLUB The Italian Club is the main promoter of the Italian culture at SMCS. Every year it organizes a briscola and a fooseball tournament and a "Festa della Salsiccia". Students in the club are also offered the opportunity of cultural excursions such as visits to museums, the CHIN building and participate in activities organized by the Italian community.

LAW SOCIETY The St. Michael's College School Law Society consists of grade 12 law students and participates in provincial law competitions. In 2010, the society entered a team into the Toronto Criminal Mock Trial competition and a team into the Ontario Charter Challenge which is based on an appeal scenario. The students performed admirably in both events with the Charter Challenge team having their factum selected as best in the province. LEGO CLUB The Lego Club participated in the Regional Qualifying Tournament, placing 1st in Robot Performance and 1st in Robot Design. The Club also participated in the Provincial Ontario Tournament in Oshawa, placing 5th overall. MATH CLUB Instead of hanging out at the Deci-mall, the Math club decided to hold weekly practices during lunches. With the help of teacher-moderators, Mr. Coghlan and Mrs. Dankowycz, dedicated members of the prestigious Math Club met to work on challenging math problems in preparation for a series of contests written throughout the year. This radical team competed in the Canadian National Mathematics League, which consisted of 6 monthly contests, the American Mathematics Competition at the Grade 10 and 12 levels and the infamous Canadian Mathematics Competition run by the University of Waterloo. OUTDOOR EDUCATION In collaboration with Alive Outdoors, the school organizes camps for Grades 7 to 10. Grade 7, 9 and 10 students attend camp in early September, while Grade 8 students attend in January. The purpose of the camps are to help strengthen communication skills, encourage group cooperation, enhance problem-solving and leadership skills, and build up respect and trust for oneself and for the group. The Leadership Camp, which trains students to be camp leaders, is held in May at YMCA Camp Wanakita. PEER TUTORING Peer tutors assist those who may be struggling in a particular subject through one on one assistance. Peer tutors should be well organized, dependable and motivated to help their fellow student. Peer tutoring qualifies for Community Service Hours in Grades 9 and 10 and for Christian Service Hours at the senior grade level. PHOTO/VIDEO CLUB The club was involved in the photographing and videotaping of our varsity sports throughout the year. The video club’s year culminated at our prestigious athletic awards banquet with the computer editing and presentation of an impressive video/music collage highlighting our year in sports. PREFECTS To be a St. Michael's College School Prefect is to take on the responsibility to use all your talents, academic, artistic, and athletic, for the benefit of the St. Michael's College School Community and not expect anyone other than those you serve to notice. Prefects are chosen on the basis of how well they have lived the virtues of goodness, discipline and knowledge, during their first years at St. Michael's. They take the responsibility to instill in others their own desire to embody the St. Michael's Man. They also perform invaluable services through various activities and functions where members of the public have occasion to meet the student body. PRO-LIFE CLUB The Pro-Life Club continues to stand up for the right to life of all human beings from conception to natural death. This year found us involved in the Toronto Life Chain and the National March for Life in Ottawa and raising awareness of this most fundamental right in our school community. QUEST Quest is an inter-religious dialogue between Jewish, Christian, and Muslim young people which allows them to learn about other traditions while sharing and representing their own tradition. SOCIAL JUSTICE AND LEADERSHIP These clubs work to raise awareness of injustice in the world and foster a culture of leadership. Besides raising awareness, funds are raised for various charities. SPORTS PRODUCTION TEAM The Sports Production Team under Ian D'Costa promoted Varsity hockey, basketball and football among other events. Their efforts provide video and photographic results of various activities; sporting and non-sporting. They are one of the most exciting and relevant clubs in the school. ST. MICHAEL'S COLLEGE SCHOOL CHALLENGE AWARD This award is open to Grade 7 and 8 students. To be eligible, students must register to participate and will be expected to do volunteer work at the school, attend school events and games, be engaged in regular physical activity and develop a skill. Achieving the award indicates a student's commitment to life at St. Michael's and allows students to gain an early understanding of some of the Duke of Edinburgh Challenge Award requirements. STOCK MARKET CLUB After a long 6 month uncertainty ride of the recession and the slow recovery, the St. Michael’s Blue Chips virtual stock exchange competition came to an end. With $100,000 as the starting money and almost 100 people competing in the game, many competitors have gained, but many have lost. At the end, only 4 students from Grades 9 -12 and 2 students from Grades 7 and 8 have made it into the top rankings. All winners have been awarded a Cadillac Fairview Mall Gift Card, a St. Michael’s Ambassador Pen, and a signed certificate commemorating their achievement. TOWER MEDIA The Tower Media team brought the Daily Blue morning announcements to classroom projectors across the school, as well as to the internet, where students, faculty, family, and members of the St. Michael's community could access school news. The year was successful for the team, as the workforce diversified, and the team switched to new technology. A few schools approached the club during the course of the year to use our show as a model for their own video announcements projects. 12 /

THE ARTS MUSIC SENIOR CONCERT BAND trip to Europe took the band to Budapest, Bratislava, Prague, the medieval town of Cesky Krumlov, Linz and Vienna. The concerts were often performed in magnificent Baroque cathedrals and were always standing room only. Highlights included a tour of the Abbey in Melk and our final concert in Eisenstadt in Haydn Hall – the very same performance venue where Haydn conducted the court orchestras for the crowned heads of Europe. GRADE 9 & 10 BAND trip to Boston included performances at Holy Name of Mary College School, East Middle School in upstate New York and an outdoor performance at the historic Faneuil Hall in downtown Boston. The group also attended a performance of the Boston Pops Orchestra, had a “Duck tour” of the city by amphibious vehicles, went whale watching on the open sea and visited the Boston Aquarium. GRADE 8 CONCERT BAND performed at the Toronto Catholic District School Board Music Festival in April. GRADE 8 HONOUR BAND performed at the Toronto Catholic District School Board Music Festival in April and at the Canada’s Wonderland Music Festival in May. CLUB BLUE NOTE was an evening celebration of live music at SMCS, featuring our jazz ensembles and acoustic performances by SMCS staff, students and alumni. SENIOR DRUMLINE hosted the Sounds of Summer Drumline Clinic. In addition to their performances for our own sports teams, the Drumline has also played at the Blue Jays Home Opener Game and have appeared on TSN and Rogers Sportsnet a number of times due to their performances at the Toronto Argonauts games including their home opener in July. They also performed at two scholastic Drumline events as well as hosted the annual “Toronto Day of Drumline” in May. They performed at our school’s annual Fashion Show, at a Christmas parade in Scarborough and at Casino Rama. At their annual trip to Detroit they gave an exhibition performance for a crowd of 2,000 spectators. ANNUAL CONCERTS were given in November and May featuring all of our musical ensembles representing all grade levels and band categories. The November concert was held in the gym and the May concert was held in the new Centre for the Arts. DRAMA SMCS Drama presented the musical “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat” as the inaugural production in the new Centre for the Arts. VISUAL ARTS ART EXHIBIT This year marked a historical milestone for the St. Michael's Visual Art program with the opening of the official "Art Gallery" in the new Centre for the Arts. The art exhibit was open to all students and parents during the annual Arts Week. Senior students had the opportunity to display all of their portfolio work in the new venue. Students from grades 7 to 11 also showcased their art ranging from 2-D paintings & drawings to 3-D sculptures and models. Movies created by our Media Arts students entertained the viewers. An almost life-size cardboard army tank (created by Steven Atkinson Grade 9) also wowed the crowd! GRADE ELEVEN CHICAGO VISUAL ART TRIP What a super Art trip to the "Windy City"! GRADUATION REPORT Truly, one of the most amazing academic accomplishments ever at St. Michael’s College School. On Tuesday, June 29, 2010, St. Michael’s College School proudly graduated yet another class of outstanding young men ready for the wonder and excitement of experiences yet to be lived, enjoyed and shared. World get ready! With great joy and pride, hundreds of family members and friends looked on as these fine young gentlemen processed and took their seats, front and centre in our beautifully decorated 'gymnatorium' to receive words of wisdom, awards and accolades, not to mention the love and admiration of all in attendance. Flanked by the academic faculty and members of the Order of St. Michael, one by one each graduate prepared himself for the short walk to the stage. These few paces represented anywhere from a single year of attendance, as in the case of our fine young Michael Keegan who came to us from the pecan plentiful Georgia, of our friendly neighbour to the south, or Andrew Tersigni who loved the stage so much, he decided to call it home for most of the afternoon. Michael received the Fr. Matthew Mulcahy C.S.B. Scholarship, the Brian Dunn Memorial Award for General Proficiency and the Medal of the Governor General, awarded to the student with the highest average. The average is based on every course completed by the recipient in both his grade eleven and twelve years and is truly a magnificent accomplishment. Amongst the many wonderful milestones which were the 2009-2010 academic year, are two never before witnessed at St. Michael’s College School. First, the opening of the very long awaited Centre for the Arts, a project long dreamed about and finally completed under the direction of Fr. Redican. Secondly, an

accomplishment never before achieved by any student in the history of the school. One young man in the graduating class of 2010 was admitted to Harvard University, which is notable in itself. However, Patrick Colangelo caught the eye of the Harvard admissions team not only as a result of the A+ average he maintained at the school, and not only because he did so while pursuing both of the Advanced Placement courses offered at St. Michael’s College School, courses which are university level credits. The amazing element here is that he studied eight more Advanced Placement courses during grades eleven and twelve on his own time, above and beyond his accomplishments at St. Michael’s! Truly, one of the most amazing academic accomplishments ever at St. Michael’s College School. The graduation ceremony could not come to a close without the valedictory address. This year, William New, Spiritus Trophy by his side, embodiment of the tradition and history which is St. Michael’s, gave his address with the eloquence and emotion of many of his predecessors, a testament to the continued academic rigour still present at our ever expanding home at St. Clair and Bathurst. Best wishes to the entire graduating class of 2010. Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge will keep you near and light your path for many years to come.

This past year has been an exciting year at St. Michael’s as the finishing touches were placed on the new Centre for the Arts. On April 10th, 2010, the school celebrated the Gala Opening of the Centre with the Built on Dreams........ a Dream Fulfilled performance directed by Marty Story. This would not have been possible without the support and generosity of the many donors who participated in the Building on Strong Foundations Capital Campaign. St. Michael’s College School thanks each and every one of you for your dedication to the school. Bursaries and Scholarships continue to be a focus of the fundraising at the school, particularly since the school has increased the number of full bursaries awarded to those students who academically qualify to attend the school, but are unable to afford a St. Michael’s education. In keeping with this, two new bursaries and one new scholarship were established this year: Class of 1955 Bursary – as part of the class challenge, the Class of 1955 has established this Entrance Bursary to assist a student with financial need and a high academic standard to attend St. Michael’s College School. This bursary will be given to one student for a maximum of four years provided he maintains the established requirements. Hurley Group/Compass Group Bursary – The Hurley Group/Compass Group Bursary Fund is dedicated specifically to assist a financially needy student, one in each grade level for a total of six bursaries, at St. Michael’s College School. Ideally, three bursaries will be awarded for academic-athletes and three bursaries to academic-arts students. The Bursary funds will be used to offset tuition costs.

The Leader in Catholic Boys’ Education

Dr. H. Patrick Higgins Memorial Scholarship – established by the Higgins family in memory of their father. The Dr. H. Patrick Higgins Memorial Scholarship was established in 2010 to be awarded to a deserving graduate as determined by his involvement in scholastic and extra curricular activities. The scholarship will be awarded each year at the St. Michael’s College School Grade 12 Graduation Ceremonies. During this past year the archives and museum was busy with requests from the Advancement Office, alumni and researchers. The collection continued growing and as new acquisitions were processed, they were uploaded to the Archives’ Online Database, which is accessible through the Archives’ webpage. The webpage also directs users to the yearbook and school calendar collection. Large flat filing cabinets were acquired for the secure storage of large photos, posters and drawings. A new display cabinet was installed in the museum and additional displays were made available for various events. The Archives continues developing outreach programs both by adding to its online presence and at events. It continues to seek donations of school memorabilia to secure these items for the future and to further enhance its ability to preserve and to celebrate the history of St. Michael’s College School. For all the volunteers and donors, I thank you on behalf of St. Michael’s College School, the Basilian Fathers, faculty, staff and students for your continued support of the school. Truly, without your continued commitment, it would be difficult to do what we do!

ST. MICHAEL’S COLLEGE SCHOOL FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE ARCHANGELS St. Michael’s College School is proud to announce the founding of the Financial Assistance Archangels programme. In June 2009, Fr. Redican, C.S.B., President of St. Michael’s College School, spoke to Joe Barnicke about the possibility of sponsoring one of the over 30 St. Michael’s students on full bursary. These students are young Catholics, primarily immigrant boys from the core city who have qualified academically to attend St. Michael’s but whose families are unable to afford the cost of tuition. Mr. Barnicke not only expressed an overwhelming desire to support the initiative, but also indicated a keen desire to approach some of his friends that are connected to the school and ask for their help. Since 1852, St. Michael’s College School, through the dedication and generosity of the Basilian Fathers and donors, has assisted many qualified students who otherwise could not afford the cost of a St. Michael’s education. All of these students have gone on as proud alumni to be valued members of their community. Between the 2004/2005 and 2008/2009 academic years, the Basilian Fathers awarded $4,314,931 in financial assistance to a total of 665 students. This amounts to an average award of $6,488.62 per student during this time period.. For the 2009/2010 academic year, 150 students will be awarded a total of approximately $1,375,000 or an average of $9,167 per student. This includes 31 students who will receive full tuition plus textbooks and uniform. In addition to awarding bursaries by application, St. Michael’s also provides financial aid on an emergency basis so that students can continue their education. The St. Michael’s College School Archangels are donors who have stepped forward to ensure that a qualified student who can not afford the cost of a St. Michael’s education is given the opportunity to attend the school. The Archangels levels are: MICHAEL Full Tuition $15,000 J.J. Barnicke Joseph Sorbara RAPHAEL

Half Tuition $ 6,750

GABRIEL Uniform & Textbooks $ 2,500 Edward Cattana
