Every technique of vision correction whether glasses, contact lenses or laser has its medical pros and cons in terms of vision correction. Every option has its own ups and downs. Considering the right option for you, is best done when you know the advantages and disadvantages of the choice you make. Here’s a quick low down on the various options you can choose for vision correction: Contact Lenses Contact lenses are corrective lenses worn in contact with the eye ball. These are used in order to correct the vision in case of short-sightedness, long sightedness and astigmatism. Its usage requires continuous re-purchase of the lenses and lens solution. So, contact lens is not a long term solution to a problem when compared to laser eye surgery. Advantages of Contact Lenses over Glasses Some people prefer contact lens over other options for the following reasons:    

It offers an option to wear according to personal preferences. It prevents the interference of glasses on the face Preferred by sports persons for better vision and comfort. Prevents the mark on the nose bridge unlike glasses.

Disadvantages of Contact Lenses        

Not comfortable for everyone. For those squeamish about touching their eyes, contact lenses are best avoided. Needs regular cleaning process. Increases the chance for eye infection with contacts, like microbial keratitis infection. Thorough cleaning, or using a disposable pair can prove to be expensive. Minimizes comfort with contacts, while sleeping or showering. Can be easily lost; Keeping a spare pair of contacts and cleaning fluid is a must. Protection of contacts becomes cumbersome when there’s heavy wind Makes eyes dry, with continuous wearing of lenses causing discomfort, and may lead to corneal ablations/ulcers, infections. Contacts alter the shape of cornea and may take time to regain shape. If opting a laser surgery discontinuing using lenses is a must.

Laser Eye Surgery It is a form of vision correction procedure, proven to correct both short and long sightedness as well as astigmatism. Laser helps to reshape the cornea of the eye and improve focus.

Advantages of Laser surgery          

Much less risky. Reduces dependency on Contact Lenses or glasses. Instant recovery. No bandages, no stitches. Vision correction adjustment can be done years after the LASIK treatment. Laser correction scores over contacts in moderate and high astigmatism, with adjustments in the vision Lasers can improve even the slightest astigmatism. Reduces the risk of eye infections as compared to contacts. Supports water based sports unlike contacts. Offers a permanent solution unlike contact lenses. One time surgery and saves on cost, unlike contacts (add up replacement costs).

Disadvantages of Laser Eye Surgery No medical procedure is completely free from risks. There are a few drawbacks in the laser treatment. Some risks with laser include:      

Eyes feel dry and uncomfortable immediately after laser treatment; eye drops address this problem. Despite laser treatment, one in three people might need glasses to read small prints or drive at night. A glare or ‘halo effect’ may be experienced initially that improves with time. Rarely, the flap in the cornea may not heal after LASIK Laser Surgery. Technically a complex procedure; corneal changes cannot be reversed after LASIK surgery and may affect vision permanently. Vision correction is made only after additional laser eye surgeries.

Glasses/Spectacles These are a pair of glasses that help correct vision. It has its own advantages and disadvantages: Advantages of Glasses       

Worn by most people and especially safe for children. Minimum maintenance and easily accessible Photochromatic lenses can regulate light for comfortable vision. Less expensive and reusable for vision correction according to need. Protection from dust, smoke and injury. Correct vision within 0.50 diopters. Does not pose a risk for eye infections.

Disadvantages of Glasses    

Inconvenient and uncomfortable, especially for sports persons. Chances of breakage. Fog up in humid conditions, blurring vision. Leaves a mark on the nose.
