enormous cock with me on the helmet”. He ultimately settled for riding a stuffed white tiger and a pair of giant comedy breasts. “It was self-indulgent and flamboyant, and obviously it was expensive,” he recalls, “but that was the whole point of that album and campaign: to be as f***ing overblown as we could possibly do it. The stage props are now in a massive shed somewhere. A shed that can be seen from outer space…” The forthcoming album features some Strat work, but live, Justin and Dan will be returning to their first loves: Marshall Super Leads and Gibson Les Pauls. “Strats are too light,” the singer says. “You don’t feel like you’re playing a proper guitar. It’s like you’re playing one of those Steinbergs, where the headstock is shaped like a cricket bat.” Meanwhile, Dan’s pedalboard includes two Tube Screamers, two original Boss Analog delays, MXR’s Carbon Copy delay, the Roger Mayer Axis Fuzz, Korg’s

G4 Leslie Simulator, the Mesa/ Boogie V-Twin, two Boss TU-12 tuners and a Sennheiser wireless system. “And Justin has… a curly lead!” he laughs. “My setup is much simpler,” concedes the moustachioed frontman. “I have Sennheiser wireless stuff, too. At the moment, on my solo channel, I’ve got a [Pro Co] Whiteface Rat.” One thing you won’t find is a click track. “Back when we were playing in pubs, using clicks was a logistical nightmare, so we’d play everything too fast and trashy,” Justin explains. “But that was part of the fun. If I go to see a band, I don’t want to see a recital. I want to see them f*** up, if I’m honest, because it shows they’re on the edge and anything could happen. So we’ve dumped the click!” (HY) The Darkness tour UK and Ireland, starting on 8 November in Liverpool. See theactualdarkness.com for details and tickets.

Justin and co promise Les Pauls, pyro and the chance to watch them “f*** up” Darkness frontman Justin Hawkins is mentally packing his suitcase for the band’s 17-date British tour in November. “Will there be pyrotechnics?” he ponders. “Oh, absolutement. We don’t consider that expensive, because it’s a necessity. It’s like paying your gas bill: you have to heat your house, don’t you?” Fan or detractor, you have to admit: The Darkness put on one hell of a show. “When we first came out,” says Dan Hawkins, “it was the same old dirge-y, f***ing indie s***. At the time of that debut album, we sold out Wembley Arena three nights on the trot, and that just didn’t happen at the time. Now it’s a great time for live rock, and people know you’ve really got to put on a show. I wouldn’t ever be arrogant enough to say we had a hand in that… so I’ll let Justin say it!” Last time The Darkness toured Britain, recalls Justin, he wanted the stage set to resemble “an
