s l a m i n A k l 1. Let´s Ta HAPPY : Emily, you live in a three-bedroom house with seven others,

don’t you? You and your mum and dad and your brother, Simon, that’s four. Who else lives with you? Emily : Well, there’s Clive the cat, Dylan the dog, Bugs the rabbit, and Maddy the budgie. We also have a pony called Princess, but she doesn’t live in the house! HAPPY : Isn’t your house a bit crowded with all those animals?

Emily : It’s a little crowded, yes, but we all get on very well, even the cat and the dog! HAPPY : Why on earth would you want so many pets? They must take

up a lot of your time and energy. Emily : Yes, they do, but I love them all. And Clive, for example, looks after himself. The only problem is when he brings us a ‘present’ – like a dead mouse! HAPPY : Yuk! Now, Emily, many people think dogs are smelly ani-

mals. What’s your dog like? Emily : Dylan needs long walks, but he is great company and very funny. And he’s not at all smelly! HAPPY : What about your rabbit? Doesn’t he chew the furniture?

Emily : No. Bugs lives in the garage. He’s very friendly, so we let him in the house sometimes. And he’s very clever! We take part in Bunny Jumping races. I have Bugs on a lead, we both run, and he jumps over hurdles. That’s him in the picture! HAPPY : That looks fun! And what about the budgie? I can’t under-

stand why anyone wants to have a boring bird as a pet. Emily : Boring? Maddy is great fun, but sometimes the neighbours complain because she starts talking and singing late at night. HAPPY : I can’t see how you have time to look after your pony, as well

as all your house pets. Emily : I go and see Princess two or three times a day. My mum helps me with her. I can’t ride her, as she’s quite old and gets tired easily.

Emily : Yes, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. My pets are my hobby.

It’s a Cat’s Life

I

have a cat called Wellington. His fur is grey and he is a little fat, but he is a very clever cat.

On Mondays he always goes to our next door neighbour, Mrs Parker. She is an old lady. She gives him pork, which she buys especially for him. She says Wellington is very polite.

O fur – päls fat – fet next door – närmaste

n Tuesdays he goes to our other neighbours, Mr and Mrs Singh. They give him rabbit, which they say they cook just the way he likes it. I am sure that is true.

neighbour – granne pork – fläsk especially – speciellt polite – artig cook – laga (mat) true – sann bottom – bortre

ändan wall – mur spend – tillbringa (spent, spent) beef – nötkött

O

n Wednesdays he walks down to the bottom of our garden and jumps over the wall to spend the day with Daisy and Sophie. Daisy is three and Sophie is two. Wellington is very good with children. They give him beef.

O

n Thursdays Wellington has a big adventure. He visits Mr Fielding who lives in the house at the end of the street. Mr Fielding used to be a doctor. He says that Wellington should lose a little weight, so he gives him chicken because it’s good for him.

adventure – äventyr visit – hälsa på lose weight – gå ner i vikt (lost, lost) chicken – kyckling smell – lukta tin – konservburk cream – grädde still – fortfarande

I

don’t know where Wellington goes on Fridays and he never tells me when I ask him. But he always comes home smelling of fish.

O

n Saturdays and Sundays Wellington stays at home. I give him cat food out of a tin, which I don’t think he likes much. But then, after that, I give him some cream to show him he is still my cat.

When I was a boy I didn’t go out much. I spent most of my time in my bedroom listening to music or in the kitchen helping my mum. If I did go out, Jack always went with me. I couldn’t remember a time when Jack wasn’t by my side. I think Dad must have brought him back to our farm when I was about four. Jack was my dog and we did everything together. “One Boy and His Dog”, people called us, but I didn’t mind. I hope Jack didn’t either. I want to tell you about a day in the summer when I was thirteen years old. It was a boiling hot day. There was no way to keep cool. I sat in the garden getting hotter and hotter. Then I had an idea.
