The Rev. Ken Brannon

We are growing in our understanding of discipleship at Saint Michael. At its heart, discipleship means following Jesus, shaping our lives after his, and relying on the guidance of the Holy Spirit. It is a lifelong journey that strengthens not only our own faith but also the lives of those around us.

This fall, we will invite you to make commitments in three of our four pillars of discipleship: giving, serving, and praying.

(We will focus on learning in fall 2027.)

Giving means faithfully sharing our financial resources, recognizing that God’s gifts are meant to bless both the Church and our community. Serving means offering our time and talents, whether within Saint Michael or beyond its walls, to meet the needs of others. Praying includes both personal prayer and gathering for worship, deepening our relationship with God while witnessing to those seeking hope and purpose.

As you look ahead to the fall, begin considering how God may be calling you to grow through giving, serving, and praying. Watch for opportunities and resources in the coming weeks to help you take your next step in discipleship.

Thomas Pavlechko (b.

1962) is an American church musician who has served congregations in Texas and Tennessee, most recently Cantor and Composer-in-Residence at St. Martin's Lutheran Church in Austin.

Known for his hymn tunes and psalm settings, he brings that same melodic clarity to this bright, festive voluntary. Written in the tradition of English trumpet voluntaries, it pairs a fanfare-like solo line with a simple accompaniment, evoking the celebratory character the genre has carried since the Baroque era.

Children ages three through eight are invited to meet a member of our ministry staff by the pulpit to be escorted to children’s chapel; they will return to the congregation following the Peace.

Another parable Jesus put before the crowd: “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to someone who sowed good seed in his field; but while everybody was asleep, an enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and then went away. So when the plants came up and bore grain, then the weeds appeared as well. And the slaves of the householder came and said to him, ‘Master, did you not sow good seed in your field? Where, then, did these weeds come from?’ He answered, ‘An enemy has done this.’ The slaves said to him, ‘Then do you want us to go and gather them?’ But he replied, ‘No; for in gathering the weeds you would uproot the wheat along with them. Let both of them grow together until the harvest; and at harvest time I will tell the reapers, Collect the weeds first and bind them in bundles to be burned, but gather the wheat into my barn.’” ... Then he left the crowds and went into the house. The Nicene Creed (standing) All We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father.

Through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again

in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living

and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.

“Praise God, from whom all blessings flow” Old 100th

Irish-born Charles Villiers Stanford was one of the most influential composers of Anglican church music of his era.

Through his long tenure as a composition professor at London's Royal College of Music, he mentored many significant composers of the following generation. One of his most beloved and simplest anthems, "O for a Closer Walk with God," captures the poignant beauty of communion with God in its opening verse.

The music becomes more tension-filled in the second verse before returning to the opening material in the third. The anthem climaxes with the text: "So purer light shall mark the road that leads me to the Lamb."

“There's a wideness in God's mercy” Beecher The Post-Communion Prayer (kneeling, spoken by all) Johann Gottfried Walther (1684–1748) was a German Baroque composer, organist, and lexicographer who served as court organist in Weimar and a cousin and close colleague of Johann Sebastian Bach.

He is remembered for his compositions and for his Musikalisches Lexikon, one of the first music dictionaries. This setting is based on the chorale melody "Lobe den Herren," treated with the ornamented counterpoint characteristic of the German Baroque organ tradition.
