SLUSH

Partially melted snow or ice: ‘the snow on the ground was turning into brown slush’

An energetic gathering of world-conquering founders: ‘Despite the crazy weather, I made it to Slush and met my future Co-founder.’

THIS IS JUST THE TIP OF THE NORDIC ICEBERG

Slush operates on the fundamental belief that entrepreneurship is one of the best vehicles to shape the world into what we want it to be. This gives us the reason to put together these extraordinary celebrations of founders, builders and non-quitters around the world, of which you will see a glimpse of in this magazine. Who’s we, you might ask? A tight notfor-profit seeking community of forwardthinking students, entrepreneurs, and likeminded people of all backgrounds. We’re driven by the desire to cultivate more fertile ground for current and future founders, and to connect them with the people and resources they need. The smaller tips of this iceberg can be seen at our 70+ gatherings around the

world, while the highest summits are climbed in Shanghai, Singapore, Tokyo and Helsinki. In fact, over 42 000 people made it to the top last year. The base was formed ten years ago by a gathering of a couple hundred people in a cold, particularly slushy November in the Nordics, but nobody in their right mind could have imagined where it would lead. Wherever Slush is organized now or in the future, there’s always a local flavor to it, and a local raison d’être, too. From where we are standing, it looks like there has never been this much going on in the Nordics, Europe or Asia in terms of companies founded, funded and taken to successful exits – and it’s only getting started. It’s time for us to roll up our sleeves and get to work!

Andreas, CEO

The first global Slush – Slush Asia – took place in Tokyo in 2015. We’ve come a long way; since the first time, the amount of attendees has doubled. This year, Slush Tokyo will bring 6000 attendees – including 600 startups and 200 investors – under one roof. Slush was not built to be an one-man band: it is, and has always been, all about community. Even in a tech wonderland such as Japan, it may take an extra dose of courage to become a startup founder, as the career choice definitely is still rare. The work Slush Tokyo is doing by building a supportive community for the next generation of determined Asian entrepreneurs is invaluable.

WELCOME TO THE LION CITY The Slush community is right at home in Southeast Asia. The vibrant region, home to rapidly developing markets and ambitious, driven founders, is a perfect spot for another international chapter in the Slush story. For the third time, Slush Singapore will be where the local startup ecosystem meets the international crowds; where the future co-founders meet each another for the first time; where the first fundings are secured. This year’s Slush will be held on Sept 14. This isn’t all, though! The fun begins already the day before, with official pre-events and Sept 15 is reserved for the official After Slush day. Also, Formula 1 fans be prepared, because the Singapore Grand Prix is in town at the same time! Get your tickets and see you there in September!

WELCOME TO THE NORTH You’ve entered the second decade of Slush. Roughly a decade ago, a group of entrepreneurs decided to support their local: Slush, an event focusing on helping the next generation of fearless entrepreneurs forward in their journey, was founded. The days of 200 people in attendance may be long gone, but the good spirit is more tangible than ever. The Slush ethos remains the same: to help match founders with investors. To facilitate meetings, which we will be reading in years to come. To facilitate a positive, experimental space where the startup community, both local and global, feels at home. Slush is where ”Burning Man meets TED”. Where festival meets conference. Where startups meet investors. It’s all about the worlds colliding. Who do you want to meet?

Slush painting the town pink: the city of Helsinki, our partner, marked the beginning of Slush Week with celebrating one of our theme colors of the year. Pink, the reviving color of utopia and possibility. Helsinki City Hall hosted the Slush 100 Pitching Competition.

It takes a village. By village, we mean the city of Helsinki - not much bigger than a village, but hey, size isn’t everything. Frequently topping the charts of the best cities to live in the world, Helsinki will surely offer you the best of its hustle and bustle during Slush Week.

BIGGER, BETTER, FASTER, STRONGER. THE NORDICS IN 2018. There is a lot to be excited about in the Nordic tech hub right now. From our portfolio company Spotify’s IPO and several others in the pipeline, to significant growth investments coming into the ecosystem, it is great to see how much the market has matured over the past five years. Personally, I am most excited about a new generation of entrepreneurs coming out of some of these companies and starting their own journeys as entrepreneurs. I also think that it’s rewarding to see the Nordics continue to punch above its weight when it comes to investment returns; if strong ROI on invested capital in tech becomes our main export, we’re very well positioned going forward.

do not necessarily need to move HQ as you scale (see for example Supercell, Spotify, and Klarna). This creates clusters of talent locally, which in turn generates more value in terms of soughtafter skills. Games industry talent are a good example of the Nordics being the most densely populated talent cluster of its kind globally. As the next step, we need to up our game around actively recruiting more top global talent to the region so as to scale these companies and the ecosystem itself. The Nordics, with its strong product and engineering culture, progressive family, gender equality, healthcare, and social security policies, and an ever-growing digital economy, has solid potential to mature into the top choice for tech talent globally.

The most promising aspect of being an investor in the Nordics right now is that we are merely at the beginning of the next cycle, with the scale of winners created locally starts meaning that you —

DIVERSITY IN TECH AT SLUSH Diversity Matters Startups with more diverse workforces perform better. When companies commit themselves to diverse leadership, they are more successful. That’s a fact.

Success isn’t the only reason why it matters, though. People tend to design products for people like themselves. More women as founders means more products designed to improve women’s lives all over the globe.

Slush x HeForShe

Since 2017, Slush has been working together with HeForShe to inspire more women to pursue careers in STEM. The effort we put into supporting women in STEM today will impact the number of female role models young women will have to look up to in the future. Slush participants were also encouraged to make the HeForShe commitment at the venue.

Diversity in Numbers We focus on building a diverse speaker lineup, and the organizing team behind Slush is very heterogenous. 36 % of Slush attendees were women in 2017. That’s better than we did in 2016. But it’s not enough - we’ve committed to 50/50 by 2020. Diversity is more than just gender diversity. It means diverse identities and experiences. Entrepreneurship is at its best, when it belongs to everyone.

“ EUROPEAN TECH IS THE STRONGEST IT HAS EVER BEEN.” THE STATE OF EUROPEAN TECH 2017:

Since 2015, Atomico and Slush have co-produced the State of European Tech report. The world’s first comprehensive, data-driven report on the European technology scene.

The report for 2017 has tracked the progress made since 2015 on the continent. The results are showing bigger than ever: Europe’s investment into tech talent and deep tech industry has turned the continent into the world’s leading powerhouse. “European tech is strongest it’s ever been, marching to the beat of its own drum,” is how Tom Wehmeier described it on stage at Slush 2017. The take away of last year’s report is clear: European technology is increasingly independent of outside influence. The scene is being built up in its own image. One of the biggest reasons for this is Europe’s technology talent pool: last year, Europe was home to 5.5 mil professional developers, a 500k increase from 2016. This leaves behind the USA, with their 4.4 mil professional developers. Europe is truly on the way to technological supremacy.

Capital Flows & Corporate Investors: Set to beat 2016 levels of investment, 2017 is shaping up to be another record breaking year in tech investments. There are investors from all across the world from different backgrounds, most noticeably in increasing amounts from traditional industries. Potentially in the USD trillions.

Deep Tech: AI and crypto industries lead the European way in the deep tech world, with particularly high investment happening in Germany and the UK. While this may be unsurprising to some, this should not diminish other European nations’ advances in the Deep Tech business.

Europe has world-class tech talent being tapped by global giants looking to embrace tech solutions on a larger scale than ever before. The talent pool is so vast that it is not even limited to the biggest metropolises anymore; especially in mature markets like Germany, the tech communities are becoming more diffuse.

Facilitating meetings between investors and startups is at the very core of Slush. In 2017 alone, there were 6,134 investor-startup meetings during the event. Behind this result is the Slush Matchmaking Tool – a database built in-house where investors, startups, executives and media can propose and book meetings during the event. Using the tool, attendees can browse through other attendees at the event, evaluate who they want to meet, and send requests on an individual

42

basis. The user pool consists of founders, investors, experts and talent, media, and executives who all are looking for something. Last year, our vast meeting area was prebooked full ahead of the event. In 2018, we are not limiting ourselves to the main event, but including +300 side-events for all guests to have a chance to meet people outside of the events they are attending.

One of the most recent stories in the making is Finnish cleantech company Altum Technologies. Their ultrasonic industrial equipment cleaning solution won last year’s Slush 100 Pitching Contest. Their COO, Bo Malmberg, recalls their journey to Slush. “Me and my co-founder Matias had a company that imported various cleantech solutions to Finland,” Bo describes Altum’s origins. “Our clients continuously asked us for more efficient ultrasounic solutions. Eventually, we began to investigate the possibility of building an entirely new solution, so we started looking for people to work with.” Altum Tech was founded in May 2016, and the first commercial version of the product was launched a year on, just when Slush 2017 was around the corner.

“Coming to Slush was a no-brainer,” Bo remembers. “We also felt, that if we are going to

go, we will go all out, so we signed up for Slush 100 too.” Bo ended up pitching in the Slush 100 final and winning the grand prize. Just the exposure turned out to be the most valuable takeaway from attending. “Slush was an amazing experience for us. We had a tight schedule, loaded with 1-on-1 meetings. The volunteers were an amazing help during the competition too. One of them even got interested in our product, and we’ve been in touch with them back in their home country since!” Bo exclaims. Pitching isn’t the only way to get noticed at the event. With the Slush Matchmaking Tool, Startup Demo Booths, speaker engagement, and a massive crowd at your fingertips, Slush 2018 will be the one stop startups don’t wanna miss next December.
