Eleventh annual Girl-Wise conference is May 3
Girl-Wise is a daylong free conference for all girls attending junior high or high schools throughout the Lake County community. This year’s Girl-Wise conference will take place on Saturday, May 3, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the College of Lake County, Grayslake Campus, Building C. The day begins with registration, a clothing donation center, Jr. Challenge course teambuilding activities, and a resource fair. Thereafter, the girls will convene in the main auditorium for opening remarks and the featured speaker. The featured speaker for
this year’s conference is Erin Merryn. Erin was a victim of sexual abuse as a child. It is now her mission to take the stigma and shame off of sexual abuse survivors and give them a reason to speak. By doing so she speaks at many forums nationwide and has worked very hard to create Erin’s Law. Erin’s law, for states that have passed it, is a requirement of all public schools to teach sexual abuse prevention. Erin will be telling her story of overcoming, education, and prevention. Afterwards, attendees will be divided into junior high and high school breakout groups to address topics
dealing with stress, empowerment, healthy body and minds, school success, and others. During the morning breakout sessions parents will also have an opportunity to attend an informative workshop. This year’s topic is “Positive Body Image and Self-Esteem.” Following lunch, which is provided for all of the participants, the girls will view a play performed by the “Reality Theatre Troupe” of Omni Youth Services and complete the second half of the breakout sessions. Throughout the day, the young ladies participate in
several activities and are provided a wealth of information to absorb; e.g., how to begin new friendships, strengthen old friendships, bolster self-esteem, empower and motivate oneself, and just have fun. The conference is a collab-
orative effort between a host of agencies and volunteers that include the 19th Judicial Circuit, Regional Office of Education, College of Lake County, Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office, Juvenile Officers Association, Juvenile Justice Council, Omni Youth
Services, NICASA, Zacharias Center, Warren Township, One Hope United, Students from Warren Township High School, Huntington Learning Center, Lincolnshire Police Department, the Fitting Room and many volunteers throughout the community.
Little Theater in the Church presents ‘The Tempest’ “The Tempest” by William Shakespeare is rocking along nicely toward its May 9 opening. The Mother’s Day weekend performance will be the only chance for audiences to see this new approach to possibly the most unusual play in the Shakespearian repertoire. It is not a history, or a romance, a tragedy nor a comedy. It is simply “The Tempest,” a story of betrayal within a royal family, kidnapping of two innocent, defenseless people (one a three-year-old child) and a strange magic force that allows them to survive on a deserted island for 12 years. And then – revenge. All performances will be in Wesley Hall of the United Methodist Church of Antioch, 848 Main Street in Antioch. It is being presented by the Little
Theater in the Church and Festival of Arts of Antioch and is directed by Ken Smouse, who created the adaptation of the classic play. The show will be on Friday May 9 and Saturday May 10 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday May 11 at 6:30 p.m. The early curtains are to allow for full family attendance. The show will be enjoyed by all ages. Tickets are priced $10 dollars for adults and $5 dollars for students. Coffee, punch and cookies will be served following the performances. Tickets may be reserved by calling the church office at (847) 395-1259 or the director at (847) 395-1333. Seating space is limited. The all-star cast is led by Justin Kezerow of Zion in the role of Prospero, Tom Hous-
man of Antioch as Gonzalo, Jeneva Petersen of Wisconsin as Miranda, Rob Weckler of Antioch as Alonzo, Nikki Georgia of Antioch as Ariel, and Isaac Armstrong of Antioch as Ferdinand. Other featured performers are Peter Pintozzi, Andrew Parish, Jerod Howard, Kevin Carr, Daren Walsh, Kellie Smouse, Roz Ohlinger, and Terry O’Brien. In addition, a group of adorable young ladies who play the Sprites: Caitlan Cannon, Claire Cannon, Angelique Ganong, Meghan Georgia, Jacinto Petersen, and Elizabeth Squire. It will be an entertaining show in the fashion of touring companies of the 15th and 16th centuries except there are females in the cast. How shocking can you get?

Memorial sculpture brings Holocaust Remembrance to Spring Grove By Gregory Harutunian CORRESPONDENT
Most people see the rock spire standing off in a cove, next to an access road leading into Spring Grove Park. They see the circular plaque affixed to it, with a woman’s face in side profile jutting out in bas relief. Few stop to read the small print scripting that identifies the face as Lisa Derman, a holocaust survivor, an underground resistance fighter during World War II, and a groundwork founder for the Illinois Holocaust Museum in Skokie. It was all about remembrance for her, and her husband, Aron, and recounting a life when they appeared at the Illinois Storytelling Festival in 2002, not far from where the spire is placed. “The time will come, when you will have to stand up, and be counted (against injustice),” said Derman. “I will not be here much longer, and the story must go on.” Those words rang out in greater significance, when
she quietly bowed her head onto her chest, and passed away from heart failure. Hebron-based storyteller, longtime festival organizer, and author Jim May recalled the words, and had said that after 20 minutes of speaking, she handed the microphone to her husband…then departed. May spearheaded an effort to build and erect a monument, at the park site, entirely through donations, and with others, helped move the project forward. The 23-inch diameter plaque depicting Derman and her sisters was designed by Nancy Wicker. The inscription says, “Never again,” along with a short history of her life. It is a monument dedicated to holocaust survivors not only of Jewish, Armenian, Polish, Lithuanian and other nationalities, but all humanity. “My metaphor concerning Lisa Derman is ‘a steel hand enclosed in a silk glove’…a tremendous amount of determination,” said Lillian Polus Gerstner, the director of special projects for the Il-
linois Holocaust Museum in Skokie. “She was also very gracious, and as you got to no her, you realized that aspect. She was no pushover, though.” Gerstner knew the Dermans personally and professionally, during the museum’ earlier incarnation as a storefront “mom and pop” facility in the late 1980s. The Main Street location led the Dermans to contact the Chicago historical society for consultations on presenting the exhibition spaces with a more instructional and sophisticated appearance for drawing individuals and promoting field trips. “I was accepted and nurtured by them, and other survivors, more as the daughter that was interested in what they were interested in… remembrance,” said Gerstner. “The paramount lesson is that when one group of people is harmed unjustly, humanity suffers.” It is that suffering, and diminishment, which fos-

A story about Georgia Rae, Mr. Anderson, The Family Band and Idaho By Gregory Harutunian CORRESPONDENT
Georgia Rae Mussard is like any other 15-year old precocious teenager juggling school, family life, and hobbies except that her skill set involves a total immersion in the world of old-timey fiddle playing and historic Americana. By immersion, it is not “dipped in like a tea bag,” but thoroughly soaking and simmering. That dedication and total commitment led a kindergarten-aged child, fascinated by the sound of a stringed instrument, all the way to earning the title of Grand Champion at the 2013 Illinois State Fiddling championships in the “old time” category. Of note, this is the same competition won by a young Champaign, Illinois-based player, decades ago. She is the multiple Grammy Award-winning Alison Krauss, someone Georgia Rae would like to meet. “It would be really good to her, just because we have something in common, and her experiences would have a lot to offer me,” said Georgia Rae. “I play on a violin that’s 120 years old. I call it Mr. Anderson’ because a bill of sale in the violin case, had the name, Herman Anderson, and
listed him as the buyer.” “I like to call it a fiddle, but it’s also a violin…it depends on who I’m talking with,” said Georgia. Roni Mussard, Georgia’s mother, and backup guitar player noted, “Both of them, Georgia and Alison (Krauss) are children of the corn.” Krauss is an Illinoisan, from the Champaign-Urbana area, and Roni’s own roots lead back to southern Illinois, playing in a punk rock band, back in the day. Now, she manages and nurtures the art form chosen by Georgia, and the family’s band. “The set list includes wellknown spirituals, but it leans more towards the sinners since they’re more interesting, edgier, and the stories are better,” Roni said. “The Illinois title is a spectacular achievement but she wants to get to the Grand National Fiddling Championships held in mid-June, at Weiser, Idaho. We want to get her there.” An April 19 benefit to raise funds for the trip was advertised on the Richmond Fire Protection District lighted road sign, which was held in the historic downtown’s Off Broadway Coffeehouse Café. It was packed. A supplement to the funding was made through the sales of the band’s
third CD, “Kickin’ Up Daisies.” Georgia likes to defer to “The Family Band,” made up of mother, on guitar, along with sisters Kelly Jo (mandolin and banjo,) and Quintessa (multi-instrumentalist, and harmony singer.) Their music has been pushed by WBSD-FM, a Burlington, Wis., radio station, with station manager, Tom Guilding. Radio airplay also extends to Winnipeg, Manitoba in Canada. One of Georgia’s original songs, “Life Is A Dream,” has already found a place on national charts. Yet, her life at home retains a cuckoo-clock domesticity despite the chaos. “I have to go to school at noon, but we get up at 5 a.m., and at 6 a.m., we have a 45-minute family practice,” said Georgia. “I practice by myself, for an hour, starting at 7:30 a.m., then there’s homework. I practice all day but it’s broken up by daily things like washing dishes, and stuff.” The next major event is coming April 26, at the Coffeehouse on Chestnut and Pine. “It has a foot-stomping stage, which acts like an extra instrument,” said Roni. “There’s nothing like listening to old-time fiddle tunes with a foot-stomping stage.” The sacrifices, along the way,
like canceling cable and TV accounts to meet costs involved with helping Georgia and the band meet the next level have not been easy concessions. Tours included a string of nursing homes and assisted care facilities, playing three shows per day for two weeks, the proceeds covering the costs associated with their initial CD. “We looked for someone to take her to the next step, following lessons, someone that could teach her, and mentor her. We are so fortunate that the musician, and fiddle player, Shawn Drake, come into the mix,” said Roni. “He’s really coached her, and taught her so many things involved with presentation, and the way to play the music. “A lot of players at the competitions where we play, have tried to get us to change our style. We play in the Texas concert hall style, and well within the parameters of what’s permitted in the competitions. We play it…our way. Georgia is unique, and it will be fun to see how it all goes.” For more information on the upcoming Burlington CD release party, or events involving Georgia and the Family Band, go to the website, (www.georgiaraefamilyband.com).

WWII Survivor to speak at Chain of Lakes Community Bible Church On Wednesday, April 30, Chain of Lakes Community Bible Church will host speaker Edgar Harrell, a true American hero. Harrell, a WWII survivor, will tell the tragic story of the sinking of the USS Indianapolis, the largest casualty at sea in the history of the U.S. Navy and the last ship to be lost in WWII. The event begins at 7 p.m. and is free. Chain of Lakes Community Bible Church is
located at 43 W. Grass Lake Rd., Lake Villa. Former U.S. Marine, Ed Harrell, survivor, tells the tragic story of the sinking of the USS Indianapolis on July 30, 1945. The sinking of the Heavy Cruiser Indianapolis was the largest casualty at sea in the history of the U.S. Navy. It sank in about 12 minutes. Eight hundred eighty (880) of the 1,197 aboard did not survive the sinking. Only
317 survived the four-and-one half days in the shark-infested waters. The Indianapolis had just made a record speed run from San Francisco to a B29 base on the Island of Tinian, in the Marianas. The cargo aboard was the components of the Atomic Bomb, which was to be dropped on Nagasaki and Hiroshima. Twenty-six days from the time that the cargo was loaded aboard the Indi-
anapolis, the war was over, the Japanese were aboard the Missouri. Harrell’s story has to do with his experience during those four-and-one-half days. Harrell abandoned the ship with only a Kapok life jacket and thus required swimming nearly constantly for the next four and a half days. It was estimated that some 900 men got off the ship, but many of these were injured from the explo-
that an airplane providentially spotted an oil slick on the water, and when they investigated they discovered that there were men scattered over a 75mile area. Rescue was called in and for the next 24 hours, only 317 of the 1197 would be rescued. For more information, contact: Chain of Lakes, Community Bible Church, (847) 838-0103, ext. 201, or e-mail email@example.com.
sion and fire and therefore did not last long in the water. Of the 80 men in the group that Harrell was in, some 40 did not make it through the second day, and there were only 17 alive the third day at noon. It was an answer to prayer for water when a little cloud passed over dropping some much needed water, and on the third day finding a crate of half rotten potatoes. It was at the end of the fourth day

Crystal Lake teen rescued from pond On April 17 at 9:05 p.m., the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office was called to assist Crystal Lake Fire Department with Traffic Control at a rescue operation. Deputies arrived and shut down Haligus Rd. in Rural Woodstock, to civilian traffic at the request of Fire Command. This closure remained in place for approximately three hours while Crystal Lake Fire Department conducted their rescue opera-
tion. During this time the following information was obtained regarding this incident. A 15-year-old male was attending a party for another teen at a residence located in the 6100 block of Haligus Rd., Woodstock. Witnesses at the scene advised that the teen stripped off some of his clothing and jumped in to the pond from a pier. When he failed to surface Crystal Lake Fire Department was called.
None of the information obtained at this time indicates that alcohol or drugs were a factor. There is no indication of any other criminal activity in this incident. The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office does not anticipate any arrests or criminal charges as a result of this incident. Inquiries regarding the rescue operation should be directed to the Crystal Lake Fire Department.

A variety of interesting character actors/singers are needed at College of Lake County this summer for the cast of the new Mel Brooks musical, “Young Frankenstein.” Auditions will be held Monday, May 19 and Tuesday, May 20 from 6:30 to 10 p.m. in the Studio Theatre of the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts at CLC. The musical’s director, Craig Rich, is seeking a cast of 3040, which includes lead roles such as Dr. Frankenstein and his various sidekicks: the “monster” he creates, the oddly-shaped endearing helper Igor, curvaceous lab assistant Inga and madcap fiancé Elizabeth. For auditions, men and women age 13 and older should prepare one minute of a song from “Young Frankenstein.” A piano accompanist will be provided. Actors can attend either the Monday or Tuesday audition and should bring an acting resume, if they have one. Callbacks will be held on May 22 from 6:30 to 10 p.m. Copies of the script are available at the CLC Grayslake Library circulation desk for in-library reading. Aside from Craig Rich, the directors include Jean Hersey (music), Paul Hefner (orchestra), Lamaiya Lancaster (dance) and Tom Mitchell (technical). Rehearsals begin May 27 and are held Monday through Thursday evenings (with possible Friday evenings and Saturdays based on cast availability) until tech and dress rehearsals, July 13 to 17. Performance dates are July 18, 19, 25, 26 at 7:30 p.m. and July 20 and 27 at 2 p.m. For more information, contact Craig Rich at crich@ clcillinois.edu or (847) 5432567. Produced by the departments of theatre, music and dance, the show will be presented in the Mainstage Theatre of the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts.

tered a larger building at 9603 Woods Drive in Skokie for the museum, with an actual freight car from Poland that carried men, women, and children to concentration camps as the anchor artifact. At the time of its discovery, the train car was still being used as rolling stock. The museum itself is built around the train car, which sits at the exact center. The museum’s holdings gather approximately 22,000 artifacts including documents, personal possessions, photographs, and media-related oral histories. “When people come to the museum, they expect to learn about the holocaust,” said Gerstner. GREG HARUTUNIAN The Hi Liter “Having that image of Raindrops appear as beads of perspiration and tears on the bas-relief plaque depicting the face of holocaust survivor Lisa Derman. The plaque is affixed to stone Lisa (Derman) in Spring memorial placed by a cove in Spring Grove Park, near the spot where Derman passed Grove is important because
the lessons of the holocaust are universal and should not be limited to one venue, like the museum. “The Village Board of Spring Grove approved the placement site, after Jim May’s presentation in July 2011,” said Laura Frumet, the village’s Deputy Clerk. “It is a privilege to have the memorial here in our town to honor her memory, as well as mankind’s struggle for freedom, which still goes on.” Jim May, and Illinois Storytelling Inc. has continued to find ways to honor the memory of Derman, and others, and Spring Grove Park will again be the host site featuring local, national, and international storytellers for a program called, “Peace Begins with Remem-
brance: Stories of Peace and Justice.” The event, being staged Sunday, April 27, from 2 to 5 p.m. will present stories, poetry, and readings. According to a press release, teachers from local schools, and their students, have also been enlisted to participate at the event to honor Holocaust Remembrance Day. There is no admission fee, although seating is limited and everyone s encouraged to bring their seats, and an umbrella, “just in case.” For further information on the event, May can be contacted directly via email (firstname.lastname@example.org), or calling (815) 382-5264.
