Growing Individuals for the Future 15th June 2018

Hi Everyone

Newsletter Wk 7

First a note of happiness…you can be very proud of the way Haast School raced at the Cross Country yesterday. We had some successes with lots of second places, but even better was watching the children interacting with other students from our Cluster. They really have made some friendships over the last 2 years. Oh and it was 17 degrees and sunny in Whataroa, a glorious day. Mid-year reports will be sent home in the last week of the term. All of you attended parent meetings either at the end of T1 or start of T2, where we discussed your child’s progress, so there should be no surprises. National Standards have been removed as a reporting tool. In the formal mid-year report, we will be showing you how your child is progressing against our NZ curriculum levels. These are grouped in 2 year bands L1=yrs 1 and 2 at school, L2=yrs 3-4, L3=yrs 5-6, L4=yr 7-8 and so on through high school. They cover all subjects and we will broaden our mid-year reporting to include social studies as well as the core areas of maths, reading and writing. If any of this seems confusing, or you hear of other schools doing something different, please don’t hesitate to call me for a chat about it. Remember the most important aspect is that they are learning, and making progress no matter where they are in the levels. Next week we will have the ministry property team here installing LED lighting, sound baffles and upgrading the spouting filter systems. We will need to be considerate of them and patient with less learning space for the week. We are very grateful to be part of this trial. Parents trying to plan ahead?? Remember these dates:

Teacher only day for staff to finalise reporting - date 29th June. The date of ARTS Festival in Franz Josef next term has changed to 19th September. To celebrate Matariki and to launch our Term 3 Frontier- Space we will travel to Makarora on Thursday 2nd August and join them in an astronomy session with Martin Unwin and his telescope. This will probably be an overnight trip.

BOT News Antarctica

The children are studying Antarctica for topic this term. We were lucky to have local nurse Christine Sinclair come along and tell them some of her experiences of being down there.

Welcome to Liz Komen our local nurse, who has agreed to join our Board through to the next election in May next year. We are very pleased to have someone from the wider community join us.

Wanted: boxes for construction, all sizes small to large. Collect and send along to school please. Scholastic Book Club Orders back by Friday 22nd June

First Aid with St John

We had Catherine Allen from St John here teaching the children CPR and general first aid.

Homework

Due to the Cross Country this week, homework will be to have your TOP SPOT photo into school by Monday next week.

Haast School would like to thank:

Cluster Cross Country at Whataroa

Cross Country went well and what a splendid day in Whataroa, temp getting up to 17 degrees. All the children ran well with: Connor Harris coming 3rd and Charlotte Anderson, Michael Afan, Billie Nixon and Rata Gurney with 2nd placings.

St John Ambulance, Catherine Allen for teaching first aid. Christine Sinclair for coming along and talking to the children about Antarctica. Lynda Horne for the chicken wire so our chickens can run around. Drivers for the cross country. Wanaka Lions Club for agreeing to make our pool an ongoing project-they are planning a painting work party for spring- I promised a venison and crayfish lunch for the crew!

Connor Harris For super progress in reading, maths and determination in Cross Country
