EVENT PREVIEW ROUND 2
PENRITE OIL SANDOWN SUPERSPRINT The Repco Supercars Championship returns to Victoria for the first time in over a year with the Penrite Oil Sandown SuperSprint, with Shane van Gisbergen the driver to beat following a sweep of the season-opening Repco Mount Panorama 500 but with an injury concern.
T
he 2021 Repco Supercars Championship got underway with two races at the Mount Panorama Circuit, where Triple Eight Race Engineering’s Shane van Gisbergen emerged as the red-hot championship favourite with two race wins. With reigning champion Scott McLaughlin departing for the IndyCar Series, fellow New Zealander van Gisbergen
P8
picked up where he left off at the 2020 Bathurst 1000. But van Gisbergen has undergone surgery since the last round, after injuring his collarbone in a mountain biking accident with concerns over his fitness. Teammate Jamie Whincup is in his final full-time season before he steps out of the driving seat to become team manager at Triple Eight, taking a pair of top-10 finishes at the season opener. Tickford Racing’s Cameron
Waters and Walkinshaw Andretti United’s Chaz Mostert shape as van Gisbergen’s closest challengers following strong performances at Bathurst. Mostert took two podiums and is out to score a first win with the team, alongside former Dunlop Super2 Series champion Bryce Fullwood. Waters ended last season as one of the form drivers and carried that speed into Bathurst, leading a team that’s downsized from four
to three entries, with Jack Le Brocq and James Courtney returning for their second seasons with Tickford Racing. Reigning champions Dick Johnson Racing reset following the departure of McLaughlin and Team Penske, with the all-new driver line-up of Will Davison and Anton De Pasquale on the pace at the season opener. Team 18 started the season strongly with Mark Winterbottom sitting in third in the

standings. He and teammate Scott Pye are out to score a breakthrough win for the ever-improving team. There were big off-season changes at the team now known as Kelly Grove Racing with investment in the team by the Grove Group/Grove Racing. David Reynolds and André Heimgartner were both inside the top 10 at Bathurst, in the team’s second season running Ford Mustangs. Erebus Motorsport and Matt Stone Racing both feature all-rookie line-ups with Will Brown and Brodie Kostecki being promoted from endurance co-drives to full-time drives at the former and Zane Goddard
and Jake Kostecki (cousin to Brodie) stepping up into full-time roles after sharing a drive last season at the latter. Team Sydney also features an all-new line-up with Fabian Coulthard and Garry Jacobson. Brad Jones Racing had a troubled run at Bathurst, plagued by mechanical dramas, with its four-car line-up of Nick Percat, Todd Hazelwood, Jack Smith and Macauley Jones. Also looking to bounce back is Blanchard Racing Team, running a Ford Mustang for Tim Slade. The entry impressed with a frontrow start in its debut as a standalone entry, though a
heavy crash for Slade in Race 1 forced the entry to miss Race 2 and switch to its spare car for Sandown. Sandown is the first event in 2021 to feature the threerace SuperSprint that was implemented last season, for the first sprint round at Sandown since 2011. Sandown first hosted the Australian Touring Car Championship in 1965 and has been a regular on the calendar, with the Sandown 500 endurance event included in the championship from 2003 to 2007 and 2012 to 2019. Sandown was due to host a sprint round in 2020 before the event’s cancellation in the wake of the COVID-19
pandemic. It slots into the 2021 schedule on the original date for the Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park, one year after the grand prix was cancelled midway through the 2020 event. The Penrite Oil Sandown SuperSprint is also the first Supercars event held in Victoria since the cancellation of the grand prix in 2020; a welcome return for not only Victorian fans but also the Victorian-based entrants who spent 100-plus days away from home to complete the 2020 season. Visit Supercars.com to follow the action throughout the Penrite Oil Sandown SuperSprint.

fast and flowing circuit that was the traditional home of the pre-Bathurst 1000 endurance event before 2019, Sandown missed out on a spot on the original 2021 Supercars calendar but slots in as the replacement round for the postponed Australian Grand Prix in March.
It’ll be a long-awaited return to Victoria for Supercars, a year since the grand prix was cancelled during the course of the event. Long associated with a two-driver endurance event, Sandown will host a sprint round as it was scheduled to do in 2020. The 2021 event will be the 51st championship round
at the circuit, more than any other in the history of the Australian Touring Car Championship/Repco Supercars Championship. Sandown features two long straights and the fast Dandenong Road Corner (Turn 6), in addition to the tight and twisty sections in the first and third sectors. CLICK HERE to watch the
biggest hits at Turn 6. Recent redevelopments saw safety upgrades made at various points of the circuit, particularly on the exit of Dandenong Road Corner. Sandown first opened in 1962, hosting the Australian Grand Prix six times and in 1964 an international six-hour touring car race, which eventually became the Sandown 500.

SUPPORT CATEGORIES VHT S5000 AUSTRALIAN DRIVERS’ CHAMPIONSHIP
The VHT S5000 Australian Drivers’ Championship makes its first appearance on the Supercars support bill. S5000 represents the new generation of Australian openwheel racing, with drivers battling it out for the Australian Drivers’ Championship and Motorsport Australia Gold Star – the oldest and one of the most prestigious drivers’ titles in Australia. S5000 is the modern successor to the legendary Formula 5000 category, which captured the hearts and minds of Australian motorsport fans
P32
throughout the 1970s. The number ‘5000’ is in reference to the five-litre (5200cc) V8 engines, which produce 560bhp and speeds of up to 300km/h. Long-time Supercars team Garry Rogers Motorsport prepares the S5000 cars, which made their racing debut at Sandown in 2019. With the 2020 season falling victim to the COVID-19 pandemic, a four-round championship is scheduled for 2021 ahead of a move to a summer season later in the year. Drivers to watch include Supercars co-drivers Thomas Randle and James Golding, European Formula 3 race winner Joey Mawson,
open-wheel veteran Tim Macrow and rising stars Nathan Herne, Cooper
Webster and Luis Leeds. Visit S5000.com.au for more.

PORSCHE PAYNTER DIXON CARRERA CUP
The Porsche Paynter Dixon Carrera Cup returns to the race track for the first time in more than a year, kick-starting its 2021 season at Sandown. The category is one of the premier one-make championships in Australia with drivers competing in identical Porsche 911 GT3 Cup (991 Gen II) race cars. The second-generation 991-series 911 race car was introduced to the series in 2018 and will be replaced by the 992-generation 911 GT3 Cup in 2022. The Porsche Paynter Dixon Carrera Cup is made up of two classes, the Pro and Pro-Am classes, which provides a mix of rising stars and experienced professional racers and “gentleman” racers on the grid. Two Bathurst 1000 winners join the field in 2021 with Craig Lowndes making his long-awaited debut in the category, after the cancellation of his scheduled debut at the 2020 Australian Grand Prix, and Luke Youlden returning to racing after a brief retirement. Fellow Supercars endurance co-drivers Dale Wood and David Russell will also be
contenders in the Pro class, with Wood the runner-up to Jordan Love in 2019. Cooper Murray was leading the 2020 championship
following the only round of the season in Adelaide, looking to restart where he left off following a clean-sweep of those races.
Pro-Am contenders include Stephen Grove, Adrian Flack, Tim Miles and Sam Shahin. Visit CarreraCup.com.au for more.

HERITAGE REVIVAL
The Heritage Revival will allow local and interstate entrants to race their much-loved cars at one of the most historic circuits in Australia, keeping the retro theme of recent Sandown Supercars events alive. Sandown has hosted more Australian Touring Car Championship/Repco Supercars Championship rounds than any other circuit, with the 2021 Penrite Oil Sandown SuperSprint the 51st championship event at the circuit. Since it was opened in 1962, Sandown has hosted many of the historic cars on the grid

for the Heritage Revival, be it in a championship round or in the Sandown touring-car endurance race, which began as a six-hour race in 1964 and became a 500-kilometre race in 1984. There are four classes within the Heritage Revival, including Groups A, C, N and S. The 1985 Bathurst-winning Jaguar XJS will hit the track, as well plenty of Group C Commodores and Falcons. Two-time Bathurst 1000 winner and 1995 Australian Touring Car Championship winner John Bowe will be one to watch in a Chevrolet Corvette C2 in Group S.

THE LAST TIME A CHAMP DIDN’T DEFEND THE TITLE
Scott McLaughlin won’t be defending his Supercars championship in 2021. The last time that happened was in 1997, when Craig Lowndes ventured to Europe and paved the way for McLaughlin’s mentor Greg Murphy to step up with the Holden Racing Team.
T
here have only been three times in the 60-plus year history of the Australian Touring Car Championship/ Supercars when the reigning champion hasn’t defended the title. They were David McKay in 1961, Robbie Francevic in 1987 and Craig Lowndes in 1997. While McLaughlin plans to take part in the 2021 Repco Supercars Championship with a return to drive for Dick Johnson Racing at the Repco Bathurst 1000, the aforementioned trio didn’t race in any championship rounds in what would’ve been their titledefending seasons. Lowndes’ dominant performances in 1996, including a record-breaking run to the championship in his rookie season followed by victories
in the Sandown and Bathurst endurance races, led to an opportunity to race in Formula 3000, the feeder category to Formula 1, in 1997. New Zealander Greg Murphy replaced Lowndes at the Holden Racing Team, following his stint as co-driver to Lowndes in their wins in the endurance events the previous year. With Lowndes’ absence, the 1997 championship shaped as a wide-open contest. Murphy won the opening race of the season at Calder Park Raceway, but the pendulum soon swung to Glenn Seton. The Ford driver scored a clean sweep of the rounds at Sandown and Eastern Creek, with John Bowe and Russell Ingall his closest championship challengers. Murphy ended the season as the form driver with round wins at Mallala and Oran
Park, though Seton had done enough to win his second championship with his own Glenn Seton Racing team. Meanwhile, over in Europe, Lowndes was having a difficult time, struggling to keep pace with teammate Juan Pablo Montoya and scoring points at just one round. Lowndes returned for the non-championship enduros alongside Murphy in 1997, but it was his move back into the championship on a full-time basis in 1998 that created a dilemma for the Holden Racing Team. With Lowndes back and Mark Skaife signed for the 1997 endurance events and a full-time drive in 1998 as replacement for the retiring Peter Brock, Murphy had to make way. He made a wildcard appearance for the Holden Racing Team at Calder Park in 1998 before returning for the
endurance events, though he would have to move elsewhere to continue on a full-time basis. While Lowndes and Skaife went on to win five championships in a row for the Holden Racing Team between 1998 and 2002, Murphy moved to Gibson Motorsport in 1999 and won the first Bathurst 1000 to be included in the championship that season. Twenty-four years after Lowndes’ one-season absence, McLaughlin follows suit with a switch to open-wheelers as the reigning Australian Touring Car Championship/Supercars title winner. This time it’s a young Australian in Anton De Pasquale replacing the departing New Zealand champion, as opposed to a young Kiwi replacing the departing Australian champion as it was in 1997.
Greg Murphy replaced Craig Lowndes at the Holden Racing Team in 1997, before the duo reunited at Bathurst that year.
