DREW FAIRCHILD

CEO TOP SHELF INTERNATIONAL We’re thrilled for NED Whisky to be the naming rights partner of this event for the first time. It’s more than fitting that we are here in Tasmania – a state renowned around the world for its rich whisky heritage – to launch what we expect will be a long and successful association with this wonderful sport. This is Top Shelf International’s first year as the P4

Official Whisky & Vodka of Supercars. We have an ambition to create an portfolio of premium spirits brands that embody Australia’s unique personality and character. Through NED Whisky & Grainshaker Vodka, we look forward building a successful association with Supercars and its fans. NED was born from a desire to create a locallycrafted, accessible premium whisky that dark spirit drinkers could call their own. Like its namesake, it’s infused with

a daring spirit and character; forging its own path to create something uniquely Australian. Now more than ever consumers are looking to support Australian brands and we are delighted to return that support by way of this partnership with Supercars and also with Grove Racing. Supercars is an ambitious and genuinely national sporting competition with passionate fans around the country – none more so than here in Tasmania – and Top

Shelf International is proud to join the list of Australianowned companies who are committed to supporting the sport’s continued grow. All the best to everyone involved in the NED Whisky Tasmania SuperSprint, especially the teams and drivers. To all the fans, enjoy this fantastic event. If you choose to stop by the NED Whisky Bar across the weekend, please remember to drink responsibly. Cheers! – Drew Fairchild

WAYNE BRYANT

REPCO AUSTRALIA CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER AUTOMOTIVE DIVISION GPC ASIA PACIFIC Repco Australia and New Zealand welcomes you to the second event of what promises to be a close Repco Supercars Championship fight at Symmons Plains, Tasmania. Following on from the opening round at Sydney Motorsport Park, Chaz Mostert leads a close title battle, and you can see that we are going to be faced with many twists and turns throughout the 2022 season. This year’s championship looks harder to pick than a broken nose. Reigning champion Shane van Gisbergen qualified 21st for Race

2, before going a lap down during the race and recovering to sixth. Or Mostert himself scoring provisional pole, before conditions dropped him to seventh by the completion of the top 10 Shootout, but arrives at Symmons Plains in the championship lead. Same goes for Shell V-Power Racing’s Anton De Pasquale, although he didn’t hold as much of an advantage as last year’s trips to Sydney Motorsport Park, the Mustang star reversed his fortunes from last year’s opening round to be second in the standings. Adding his name into calculations is Brodie Kostecki, fresh from scoring his maiden pole position in Sydney. When you include Will Davison,

Cameron Waters, Will Brown, Nick Percat, Andre Heimgartner, Tim Slade, Broc Feeney and David Reynolds... this year’s title promises to be one of the most closely contested ever. And it’s great for the Repco Supercars Championship to return to Tasmania and Symmons Plains, a place where drama regularly occurs. Positioned in an historically significant area for Australian motorsport being situated close to the historic Longford circuit where Repco engines powered Jack Brabham to victories in Tasman Series during the 1960s. We welcome Tasmanian race fans back to Symmons Plains and hope you enjoy the event. – Wayne Bryant

have a special treat for fans, the first ever running of the Gen3 Chevrolet Camaro and Ford Mustang that will thrill everyone trackside and those watching at home. Following the challenges of the past two years, it is an honour to be back racing in front of our loyal and dedicated fans here at Tasmania’s largest annual sporting event. We would like to thank the Tasmanian government for their ongoing support of Supercars and look forward to another fantastic event

this weekend. Our return to Symmons Plains this weekend has been made possible thanks to the support of our naming-rights partner Repco and our valued series partners, broadcasters, race teams, drivers, volunteers, officials who we acknowledge for their ongoing dedication to Supercars. We thank you the fans for your ongoing support and hope you enjoy the journey our championship will take you on in 2022. – Shane Howard

EVENT PREVIEW ROUND 2

NED WHISKY TASMANIA SUPERSPRINT After an action-packed season opener in Sydney, the Repco Supercars Championship heads to the Apple Isle for the NED Whisky Tasmania SuperSprint at Symmons Plains Raceway with new championship leader Chaz Mostert returning to the scene of his first success with Walkinshaw Andretti United.

T

welve months ago, Chaz Mostert celebrated his first win in a Holden and with Walksinshaw Andretti United at Symmons Plains Raceway. One year on, Mostert returns to Tasmania as not only the reigning Bathurst champion but also as a championship leader for the first time in his career following two podiums and a race win at the seasonopening event at Sydney Motorsport Park.

It was at Bathurst in 2021 where Walkinshaw Andretti United showed its championship credentials with victory for Mostert and Lee Holdsworth. Mostert scored three wins in 2021, in his second season with the Holden team, taking the best of the rest title behind the Triple Eight Race Engineering entries in the championship standings. With the addition of fellow Bathurst winner Nick Percat alongside, a championship charge now seems likely for the team.

Shane van Gisbergen scored his second Supercars championship win in 2021, leading home Triple Eight Race Engineering teammate Jamie Whincup. With 14 wins from 31 races, it was a commanding win for the New Zealander. And with a win in Sydney, van Gisbergen started the 2022 season in the best possible way in his bid to claim a third championship. While van Gisbergen will lead Triple Eight’s title defence, the progress of

full-time rookie Broc Feeney alongside will be watched closely. The reigning Dunlop Super2 Series champion steps up into the main game as Whincup’s replacement. Dick Johnson Racing fought back from the loss of Scott McLaughlin and Team Penske with Anton De Pasquale winning six races in his first season with the team. De Pasquale is once again joined by Will Davison in 2022. The Shell-backed entries shape as the leading Ford contenders,

P09 P10 Event Preview.indd 9

P9 17/03/2022 11:11:54 AM

with both drivers expected to be championship contenders with a double podium for De Pasquale in Sydney. Also threatening from the Blue Oval camp is Tickford Racing, which expands to four entries with the addition of a Mustang for full-time rookie Thomas Randle. But it’s Cameron Waters who will be expected to lead Tickford’s championship charge after a season in which he claimed its three wins, re-signing with the team alongside title sponsor Monster Energy. Consistency is the key, following a poor run of form at the end of last season that was snapped by Waters’ second place at Bathurst. Erebus Motorsport shapes as the dark horse after a strong 2021 season with full-time rookies Will Brown and Brodie Kostecki. Brown claimed a win in 2021, with both drivers inside the top 10 in the championship standings. The team has stability in 2022 with Boost Mobile

backing both entries as title sponsor, building on the experience of 2021 with Kostecki scoring a first pole position and finishing on the podium in Sydney. Elsewhere, Team 18 will be gunning for its first win with an unchanged line-up of Mark Winterbottom and Scott Pye. Brad Jones Racing and Matt Stone Racing reset with new recruits, with Bryce Fullwood and André Heimgartner joining Jack Smith and Macauley Jones at the former and Jack Le Brocq and Todd Hazelwood teaming up at the latter. Kelly Grove Racing morphs into Grove Racing with last season’s Bathurst-winning co-driver Holdsworth back in a full-time role alongside David Reynolds. PremiAir Racing takes over from Team Sydney with Chris Pither partnering Garry Jacobson, while the Blanchard Racing Team enters its second season with Tim Slade. The NED Whisky Tasmania

SuperSprint features three 110-kilometre races, with the Saturday race grid spots determined by the three-part knockout qualifying and the two Sunday races based on single qualifying sessions. The event will be held exclusively on Dunlop’s super soft tyre, with a single set of the new-look bluewalled tyre per car helping to mix up proceedings in the season opener at Sydney Motorsport Park. With the quicker yet higher degrading tyre on the shortest circuit on the Supercars calendar, there promises to be plenty of action across the three races. While it appears like a simple circuit on paper, Symmons Plains Raceway is one of the most challenging circuits for drivers to get right with its fast and flowing layout broken up by hard braking points, most notably at the Turn 4 hairpin. Symmons Plains Raceway hosts its 49th Australian Touring Car Championship/Repco

Supercars Championship round in 2022, having debuted in the first multi-round season in 1969. The Repco Supercars Championship will be supported by the Haltech V8 SuperUtes Series, Aussie Racing Cars Super Series and the Tassie Tin Tops in Tasmania. The Gen3 General Motors Camaro and Ford Mustang, which will make their racing debuts in 2023, will be driven on track between sessions by Tasmania’s two-time Supercars champion Marcos Ambrose and four-time Bathurst 1000 winner Garth Tander. Driver signing sessions are back and will take place behind team garages from 8:45am to 9:15am on the Saturday, while fans will be able to tour pitlane on Sunday morning from 8:35am to 9:25am. CIRCUIT GUIDE

S

ymmons Plains Raceway may be the shortest circuit on the 2022 Repco Supercars Championship calendar, but there’s plenty of character across the 2.4 kilometres. Turns 1 and 2 are tricky for drivers, with the exit of the opening corners vital for the long drag through the Turn 3 kink and approaching Turn 4.

The Turn 4 hairpin is the crucial point of the circuit, not only as an overtaking opportunity but where drivers can set up the run on an opponent on the exit. The drive from the hairpin includes the Turn 5 kink and into another big breaking point at the tight Turn 6, which presents another overtaking opportunity. Turn 7 is another challenge

for drivers on the run to the end of the lap, with the temptation to push too hard resulting in kicking up dirt on exit and compromising the current and following laps. The circuit opened in 1960 and first hosted the Australian Touring Car Championship in 1969, the first multi-round championship. Initially hosting the final round of the season, Symmons Plains

Raceway moved from the end to the start of the calendar in the 1970s. After an absence between 2000 and 2003, the addition of new permanent facilities and other developments saw the circuit become a regular fixture on the calendar from 2004, only missing out since then in 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic before returning in 2021.

SUPPORT CATEGORIES HALTECH V8 SUPERUTES SERIES The 2022 Haltech V8 SuperUtes Series championship gets underway with a first trip to Symmons Plains Raceway in Tasmania. After an initial two-year stint with diesel engines, the SuperUtes switched to V8 LS3 power units with the category rebranded to the V8 SuperUte Series in 2021. The SuperUte Series debuted in 2018, representing a whole new automotive sector on the race tracks of Australia; the ute that makes up around a quarter of all new cars sold in the country with the likes of the Ford Ranger, Toyota Hilux, Mitsubishi Triton, Holden Colorado, Isuzu D-Max and Mazda BT-50 represented on the grid. The rear-wheel drive cars weigh around 1800 kilograms and feature control components with suspension modifications made in 2019 to lower the ride height and improve the quality of racing. New wheel flares were also developed in the 2021 hiatus, with a change in wheel and tyre specifications providing more

P32

grip and increasing lap times with a lower centre of gravity. With former champion Ryal Harris and race winner Cameron Crick moving into the Dunlop Super2 Series in 2022, the V8 SuperUtes Series title race appears wide open.

Aaron Borg narrowly missed out on the title in 2021 and returns in a Colorado, as part of a strong Sieders Racing Team line-up. SuperUtes regulars back for another season include David Sieders, George Gutierrez,

Craig Dontas and Chris Formosa. JKD Racing makes its debut in the series with team owner Dean Brooking driving a Hilux. The Haltech V8 SuperUtes Series will race four times across the event.

TASSIE TIN TOPS The most diverse series in Australian motorsport is the Tin Tops category. Tin Tops grew in popularity in 2020, allowing grassroots motorsport to get back on track following the COVID-19 lockdowns. The category opens up the opportunity for drivers with varying experience the chance to race all manner of cars on the Repco Supercars Championship support bill, with entries from across Tasmania this weekend. The Tin Tops is a combined category for all types of cars spread across different classes, from V8-powered Holden Commodores and Ford Falcons to turbo-charged Nissans and BMWs. It’s a rare opportunity to see V8 touring cars, sports sedans and more racing against one another, with Symmons Plains Raceway’s layout of fast and flowing sections and big braking stops set to play into the various strengths of the cars at different points of the circuit. The Tassie Tin Tops will race four times across the event.

CRAIG LOWNDES 8 1998-1999

10

MARCOS AMBROSE 10 2003-2004 Ambrose won two consecutive titles in a Stone Brothers Racing Ford BA Falcon in 2003 and 2004. And his two championships were book-ended by third places in the standings in 2002 and 2005.

BOB JANE 9 1971-1972

Jane had already won two championships in single-race deciders in 1962 and 1963 by the time he went back-to-back once again in 1971 and 1972. Jane won his third and fourth championships in his own Chevrolet Camaro ZL-1.

Lowndes won the championship in his rookie season in 1996 before venturing to Europe to race open-wheelers in 1997. He returned to Australia in 1998 and promptly won two more championships. Had he stayed in 1997, would he have won four in a row?

JIM RICHARDS 7 1990-1991

Richards claimed Nissan’s first championship win in 1990, in a tense final-round decider. He defended the title with the Skyline R32 GT-R in 1991, in a year in which he and Mark Skaife won the Bathurst 1000, before Skaife beat Richards to the title in 1992.

ALLAN MOFFAT 6 1976-1977

Moffat won his second title in 1976 and went on to claim an even more dominant 8

championship win in 1977. His championship run was followed by a one-two formation finish for his Moffat Ford Dealers at Bathurst in 1977.

DICK JOHNSON 5 1988-1989

Johnson had already won three championships between 1981 and 1984 before he added two more in 1988 and 1989. Johnson and teammate John Bowe dominated in those two seasons with the Ford Sierra RS500, also taking a comfortable win at Bathurst in 1989.

SCOTT MCLAUGHLIN 4 2018-2020

McLaughlin narrowly missed out on the 2017 title following a last lap incident in the final race of the season. He bounced back with his first championship win in 2018 and backed that up with a record-breaking run in 2019 and a third in 2020 before departing for IndyCars.

IAN GEOGHEGAN 2 1966-1969 Geoghegan was the master of the single-race championships, winning four and three in a row between 1966 and 1968. He scored a fourth consecutive title in the first multi-round championship in 1969.

JAMIE WHINCUP 1 2011-2014

Whincup equalled Ian Geoghegan’s record of most championships in a row with his fourth consecutive title in 2014. Having won back-toback titles in 2008 and 2009, book-ended by narrow defeats in 2007 and 2010, Whincup was at the peak of his powers in the 2010s. 1

MARK SKAIFE 3 2000-2002

Skaife began a dominant spell with the Holden Racing Team with the championship win in 2000. He proved unstoppable over the course of 2001 and 2002, taking the Holden VX Commodore to consecutive championship and Bathurst 1000 doubles.
