ROD CAUST

Bunnings Trade is thrilled to support the return of the Repco Supercars Championship with the first event on the calendar in Sydney. The Sydney round is highly anticipated after another challenging year for everyone with massive impacts on businesses and trades. We’re now coming out the other side and can look to the year ahead with more confidence. It’s also been a tough year for motorsport and we commend the Supercars team for their ability to keep the

program running and moving teams around the country with so many restrictions. Being able to watch the sport in person or on TV has sustained us throughout. Of course, there’d be no motorsport without the passionate Supercars fans, and there’s no doubt their patience and support will be rewarded with an awesome first race back on the track. Bunnings Trade is made for the trade. We’re there to support tradies by creating more convenient in-store experiences with the roll out of the new Trade Desk design, self-checkouts and Load’N’Go program, stocking

more of the brands and products tradies need to get the job done, and having a dedicated team in every store available to help them get the materials they need in-store or delivered, and at the time they need it. Along with our PowerPass program, that offers a range of exclusive offers, benefits, service and support, Bunnings Trade has tradies covered. Good luck to all the teams for a great weekend of racing. We look forward to continuing our association with Supercars for many seasons to come. – Rod Caust

It’s been a long time coming, it’s been highly anticipated, but, finally, we welcome race fans back to the 2021 Repco Supercars Championship. The only exciting thing about the big break that we have had is that, every day, we knew that with every passing day, we were one closer to getting back on track. And after this extended break, we are now excited for what will be a whirlwind end of the championship. Four straight weekends at Sydney Motorsport Park is going to be a real test for the teams, especially when you factor in that they will be conducting some testing

in between, and keeping an extra bit of focus on the Repco Bathurst 1000 in December. Never before will we have seen so much Supercars racing in a short space leading up to the Great Race, so I can only imagine that we are going to see a lot of momentum for the category, and a heap of extra interest in the Repco Bathurst 1000. But before we even think about Mount Panorama, we have four huge rounds at Sydney’s main race track, and this first round is going to be a brilliant battle. You can only imagine that the Red Bull Ampol Holdens will be fast, and they’ll be gunning to make sure Shane van Gisbergen stays in front in

the championship, but there’s a horde of Mustangs that will be hoping to slide through his slipstream. The mix of racing formats is likely to see the best teams and drivers rise to the top, but we could also be in for a few surprises. Could we see a first time Supercars winner emerge from the four round Sydney swing? All we hope for is clean, exciting and unpredictable racing – things that we know that the Repco Supercars Championship always delivers. So, this is it! It’s the run home. And may the best driver and team take the biggest spoils of all. – Wayne Bryant

SEAN SEAMER

SUPERCARS CEO

On behalf of Supercars, I would like to thank you, our fans, for supporting our four-week return to Sydney Motorsport Park which has allowed us to get back to racing in the 2021 Repco Supercars Championship. Since our racing in Townsville in July, Australia has dealt with unprecedented circumstances, there is no doubt. There’s been a lot of work going on in the background to get Supercars to this point and we’ve been working furiously behind the scenes with the NSW state government and our broadcast partners, Foxtel and the Seven Network, to return to racing at this magnificent venue. Now we are back, we are going to make sure that we deliver some amazing racing over the remaining five events

of this year’s championship. With three events under these spectacular lights and the crowning of the Beaurepaires Sydney Cup winner, we will be bringing Supercars’ trademark style of racing over four consecutive weeks. Teams will need to be at their strategical best while in Sydney. This venue has produced as much heartbreak as it has success for nearly every driver on the grid. Here in Sydney, fans will get to see seven-time champion Jamie Whincup race on one of his favourite circuits one final time. His teammate Shane van Gisbergen loves to race in Sydney and will need to be at his best to hold off the likes of Cam Waters and Sydney’s born and bred Supercars stars James Courtney and Mark

Winterbottom. Thank you to our namingrights partner Repco and our valued event naming rights and series partners, race teams, drivers, volunteers, officials and fans for your dedication and support to ensure our successful return to racing. I would also like to thank Minister Stuart Ayres, Destination New South Wales and the team at Sydney Motorsport Park for bringing us the opportunity to race here for four weeks in front of our dedicated fans. We hope you enjoy all of the events that will make up the Beaurepaires Sydney Cup and from everyone at the Repco Supercars Championship, we thank you for your support in 2021. – Sean Seamer

EVENT PREVIEW ROUND 8

BUNNINGS TRADE SYDNEY SUPERNIGHT

The 2021 Repco Supercars Championship roars back into life with the first of four consecutive events at Sydney Motorsport Park, the Bunnings Trade Sydney SuperNight, before the Great Race grand finale, the Repco Bathurst 1000.

F

ifteen weeks after the WD-40 Townsville SuperSprint, the 2021 Repco Supercars Championship returns with the Bunnings Trade Sydney SuperNight. It’s the first of five remaining events in 2021, four of which will be held at Sydney Motorsport Park before the championship heads to the Mount Panorama Circuit for the Repco Bathurst 1000.

P8

The Beaurepaires Sydney Cup and a cash prize of $25,000 will be awarded to the driver who accumulates the most points over the four Repco Supercars Championship events being held at Sydney Motorsport Park across October and November. The first of the four backto-back weekends of racing in Sydney features a trio of 125km sprint races – one Saturday night race and two

on Sunday. The on-track action gets underway on Friday with two 30-minute practice sessions, including one night session. A single-compound tyre formula will be used with five sets of the Dunlop soft compound available to each car. Teams are required to complete one compulsory pitstop during each race, changing a minimum of two tyres. Night racing has become a staple of racing at Sydney

Motorsport Park, with the recent addition of permeant light towers and fittings making it the home of racing under lights. Triple Eight Race Engineering’s Shane van Gisbergen holds a 276-point championship lead over teammate Jamie Whincup entering the event, with 11 wins from the 19 races held in 2021. Van Gisbergen shapes as the favourite for what would be his second Supercars

championship crown, while Whincup is in his final full-time season before he steps out of the driving seat to become team manager at Triple Eight Race Engineering. The closest contenders to the Triple Eight Race Engineering duo are Tickford Racing’s Cameron Waters, Walkinshaw Andretti United’s Chaz Mostert and Dick Johnson Racing’s Will Davison. Waters won the most recent race in Townsville, his third win of 2021, leading the Ford team alongside James Courtney and Jack Le Brocq, the latter in his final season with Tickford Racing. Mostert has two wins this season for the Holden team, alongside former Dunlop Super2 Series champion

Bryce Fullwood. Reigning champions Dick Johnson Racing reset following the departure of three-time champion Scott McLaughlin and Team Penske, with Davison one of the most consistent performers of the season and teammate Anton De Pasquale scoring a race win. Other contenders include Team 18’s Mark Winterbottom and Scott Pye, with Winterbottom bringing up his 550th race start, becoming the fifth driver to reach the milestone. Kelly Grove Racing fields André Heimgartner and David Reynolds. Heimgartner claimed his first win in Supercars this season, announcing in recent weeks he will leave the team to join

Brad Jones Racing in 2022. Nick Percat leads Brad Jones Racing before departing at the end of the season, and is another contender for the four-car team that also includes Todd Hazelwood, Jack Smith and Macauley Jones. Erebus Motorsport and Matt Stone Racing both feature all-rookie line-ups with Will Brown and Brodie Kostecki being promoted from endurance co-driver roles to the full-time drives at the former and Jake Kostecki (cousin to Brodie and heading to Tickford Racing in 2022) and Zane Goddard stepping up into full-time roles after sharing a drive last season at the latter. Team Sydney also features an all-new line-up of Fabian

Coulthard and Garry Jacobson, while Tim Slade heads the Blanchard Racing Team in its first season as a standalone entry. Sydney Motorsport Park hosted the resumption of the 2020 season with two events/ six races with breakthrough wins for Percat and Le Brocq in addition to eventual champion McLaughlin. All sessions for the Bunnings Trade Sydney SuperSprint will be broadcast live on Fox Sports and streamed via Kayo. The Seven Network will broadcast live from 3:30pm AEDT on the Saturday and 12:30pm AEDT on the Sunday. CLICK HERE for the latest news and information on the Bunnings Trade Sydney SuperNight.

MILESTONE RACE: Team 18 took a step forward in 2020 with its expansion to two cars, getting onto the podium and with both drivers in the top 10 in the championship. Winterbottom has been a key part of that improvement in his third year with the team, starting this season with top-five finishes. He will make his 550th race start at Sydney Motorsport Park, just the fifth driver to reach that mark.

The continuity at Team 18 and strengthening of the engineering line-up makes this a team to watch this season, with Pye and Mark Winterbottom battling it out to give the team its first win. CIRCUIT GUIDE

S

ydney Motorsport Park opened as Eastern Creek Raceway in 1990 and first hosted the Australian Touring Car Championship in 1992, going on to stage night events and championship deciders. A significant redevelopment and name change took place over the course of 2011 and 2012, with the recent addition of permeant light towers and fittings making it the premier night-racing

facility in Australia. The Repco Supercars Championship will race on the 3.93-kilometre Gardner GP Circuit configuration, named in honour of world motorcycle champion and touring-car driver Wayne Gardner. The circuit has a mix of high and low-speed corners and one of the longest straights on the Supercars schedule. Turn 1 is one of the fastest and most challenging

opening corners in Australia, with the quick left-hander leading into the best overtaking opportunity into the Turn 2 hairpin. Turn 3 is an uphill righthander before the downhill descent into Turn 4. Turns 5 to 7 are technical left-handers which lead into the tight Turn 8, which is another overtaking opportunity. The lap ends with the fast kinks of Turns 9 and 10 on the approach to the final

corner, Turn 11, where exit speed is vital given the length of the pit straight. The anti-clockwise layout produces an average speed of 154km/h and a top speed of 265km/h. Scott McLaughlin set a new qualifying lap record at the circuit in 2020 with a 1:27.7428, while the race lap record is a 1:29.8424 set by Jamie Whincup in 2018. Click here to watch key moments from Sydney Motorsport Park.

SUPPORT CATEGORIES HALTECH V8 SUPERUTES SERIES The Haltech V8 SuperUte Series returns to racing action, with recent technical changes made to the big utes. After an initial two-year stint with diesel engines, the SuperUtes switched to V8 LS3 power units with the category rebranded to the V8 SuperUte Series in 2021. The SuperUte Series debuted in 2018, representing a whole new automotive sector on the race tracks of Australia; the ute that makes up around a quarter of all new cars sold in the country with the likes of the Ford Ranger, Toyota Hilux, Mitsubishi Triton, Holden Colorado, Isuzu D-Max and Mazda BT-50 represented in the category. The rear-wheel drive cars weigh around 1800 kilograms and feature control components with suspension modifications made in 2019 to lower the ride height and improve the quality of racing. New wheel flares were also developed in the 2021 hiatus, with a change in wheel and tyre specifications providing more grip and increasing lap times with a lower centre of gravity. One round has been held in the 2021 season at The Bend Motorsport Park in May, with Ryal Harris leading the championship ahead of Aaron Borg with Cameron Crick, Craig Woods and Ben Walsh rounding out the top five in the standings. TOYOTA GAZOO RACING AUSTRALIA 86 SERIES The Toyota 86 Racing Series is now well established in Australia and returns after its aborted 2020 campaign. The series pits youngsters eager to establish themselves in motorsport alongside seasoned professionals, with its inaugural champion Will Brown now a full-time driver in Supercars. All competitors drive a Toyota 86 that has been modified with a high-performance yet affordable race package that can have them on track for approximately $75,000, including the cost of the original road car. Developed by Neal Bates Motorsport, the race package includes upgraded brakes, suspension, exhaust and engine components. Control Dunlop

tyres are fitted along with a roll-cage and race seat. The 2021 season started at the Mount Panorama Circuit in Bathurst in February with Cameron Crick dominating the event with three wins from three races. James Holdsworth and Lachlan Gibbons are Crick’s closest competitors amongst the full-time entrants, with third-generation racer Clay Richards (grandson of Jim Richards and son of Steven Richards) also one to watch. Drivers in the series can test themselves against guest drivers in the Toyota Gazoo Racing Australia entries, which feature Supercars race winner Michael Caruso and rally driver Lewis Bates at this event.
