SCOTT BENNET

VICE PRESIDENT BEAUREPAIRES

Welcome to the Beaurepaires Tasmania SuperSprint! 2021 is already proving to be a great year for Beaurepaires as we become the official tyre retail partner of the Repco Supercars Championship. We are even more excited to be bringing the Supercars back to Symmons Plains in 2021 as the naming-rights sponsor for the Beaurepaires P4

Tasmania SuperSprint. Beaurepaires, which is part of Goodyear and Dunlop Tyres, have been supplying Australian motorists with quality tyres and services since 1922 through our 200plus company owned and operated stores. We are Australia’s most trusted tyre provider, offering a comprehensive range of tyres, wheels and batteries as well as automotive services designed to excel in performance, safety and reliability. Our team is highly

passionate about all things motorsport and we are so honoured to be bringing motorsport of the calibre of Supercars back to Symmons Plains to delight both Tasmanian race fans as well as national and international audiences. We’re looking forward to all the action ahead and having our brand showcased at the Beaurepaires Tasmania SuperSprint as well as throughout the 2021 Repco Supercars Championship. – Scott Bennet

SEAN SEAMER

I’m very pleased to welcome you all to the 2021 Beaurepaires Tasmania SuperSprint, at Symmons Plains. It’s an honour to be back here for the 48th time to race at this historic venue. We are thrilled that Beaurepaires has joined us as the naming-rights partner of this event and are honoured to partner with a company that has a rich and successful history of supporting

Australian motorsport. To celebrate our return to Tasmania in 2021, we have a special treat for fans, the first-ever running of the Super Trucks that will thrill everyone trackside and those watching at home. Following the challenges of 2020, it is an honour to be back racing in front of our loyal and dedicated fans here at Tasmania’s largest annual sporting event. We would like to thank the Tasmanian government for their ongoing support of Supercars and look forward to

another fantastic event this weekend. Our return to Symmons Plains this weekend has been made possible thanks to the support of our new namingrights partner Repco and our valued series partners, broadcasters, race teams, drivers, volunteers, officials who we acknowledge for their ongoing dedication to Supercars. We thank you the fans for your ongoing support and hope you enjoy the journey our championship will take you on in 2021. – Sean Seamer

Welcome to Symmons Plains Raceway for Round 3 of the Repco Supercars Championship! It has been an incredibly exciting start to the new season, which is Repco’s first as the title sponsor for the world-famous Repco Supercars Championship. So far, Shane van Gisbergen has been an unrivalled benchmark for his rivals. He is at the top of his game, and we have no doubt that his 23 rivals will be working hard to bring his amazing winning run to an end sooner rather than later. All that means is that the fans, both trackside at Symmons Plains or watching the broadcast from home, are in

for an absolute treat! Symmons Plains is a unique circuit that has something for everyone. Long straights, big braking areas, great overtaking opportunities and importantly, viewing for spectators that is regarded as one of the best in Australia – especially down at the famous hairpin. Just like Repco’s longstanding existence as a trusted automotive and engineering company in Australia and New Zealand, Symmons Plains is steeped in history too. The 2.41km track is the fifth oldest circuit that is still in operation in Australia, behind great tracks such as Mount Panorama, Phillip Island,

Albert Park and its Tasmanian sibling, Baskerville. We can’t wait to see a healthy crowd of Tasmanian fans at the race track. They have been starved of Supercars action for almost two years. We know they are widely passionate about their sport, in particular motorsport, and the scene is set to excite the locals and visitors alike. So on behalf of all the crew at our stores across Australia and New Zealand, Repco welcomes you to Round 3 of the Repco Supercars Championship. We trust you’ll enjoy two big days of Supercars action. – Wayne Bryant

EVENT PREVIEW ROUND 3

BEAUREPAIRES TASMANIA SUPERSPRINT The Repco Supercars Championship returns to Tasmania with the red-hot Shane van Gisbergen looking to remain undefeated in 2021, with an injured collarbone unable to stop the Kiwi last time out at Sandown.

T P8

riple Eight Race Engineering’s Shane van Gisbergen claimed victory in the last

Supercars race held at Symmons Plains Raceway in April 2019 and will be the driver to beat following a stunning performance at Sandown, where

he overcame a collarbone injury to win all three races, including the opening race from 17th on the grid. With reigning champion

Scott McLaughlin departing for the IndyCar Series, his fellow New Zealander now looks to be the favourite for the 2021 title with a 150-point

championship lead after five wins from the opening five races of the season. Teammate Jamie Whincup is in his final full-time season before he steps out of the driving seat to become team manager, sitting in second place in the championship following a consistent run of results. Tickford Racing’s Cameron Waters and Walkinshaw Andretti United’s Chaz Mostert shape as Triple Eight’s closest challengers, following strong performances at Bathurst and Sandown. Mostert took two podiums at the season opener and is out to score a first win with the team, joined once again by former Dunlop Super2 Series champion Bryce Fullwood. Waters ended last season as one of the form drivers and has carried that form into this season with three second places, leading a team that’s

downsized from four to three entries with Jack Le Brocq and James Courtney returning for their second seasons with the team. Reigning champions Dick Johnson Racing have reset following the departure of three-time champion McLaughlin and Team Penske, with the all-new driver line-up of Will Davison and Anton De Pasquale looking to bounce back after a challenging outing at Sandown. Team 18 started the season strongly with Mark Winterbottom sitting in fifth in the standings. He and teammate Scott Pye are out to score a breakthrough win for the everimproving team. There were big off-season changes at the team now known as Kelly Grove Racing with investment in the team by the Grove Group/Grove Racing, in its second season running Ford Mustangs.

David Reynolds was on the podium at Sandown, while André Heimgartner has been a regular inside the top 10. Erebus Motorsport and Matt Stone Racing both feature all-rookie line-ups with Will Brown and Brodie Kostecki being promoted from endurance co-drives to full-time drives at the former. Zane Goddard and Jake Kostecki (cousin to Brodie) step up into full-time roles after sharing a drive last season at the latter. And the quartet have already impressed, headlined by Brodie Kostecki with a second place at Sandown. Brad Jones Racing has had an inconsistent start to the season, with its four-car line-up of Nick Percat, Todd Hazelwood, Jack Smith and Macauley Jones. Blanchard Racing Team debuts in 2021, running a Ford Mustang for Tim Slade.

The entry impressed with a front-row start in its debut as a standalone entry at Bathurst, though a heavy crash for Slade in the opening race forced the entry to its spare car and suffered from that change at Sandown. Team Sydney features an all-new line-up with Fabian Coulthard and Garry Jacobson, in its bid to climb up the grid in 2021. The Beaurepaires Tasmania SuperSprint features the three-race SuperSprint format first implemented last season, with a tweak to qualifying for this event. The field will be split into two groups for the qualifying sessions, one car per garage, in order to ease congestion at what is the shortest circuit on the Supercars calendar. Visit Supercars.com to follow the action throughout the Beaurepaires Tasmania SuperSprint.

PODIUM RUN: Pye joined his fourth team in Supercars in the second entry at Team 18 and scored three podiums in 2020. The continuity at Team 18 and strengthening of the engineering line-up makes this a team to watch this season, with Pye and Mark Winterbottom battling it out to give the team its first win. He has struggled to match his teammate’s results early this season, looking to get back on par. P18

CIRCUIT GUIDE S

ymmons Plains Raceway may be the shortest circuit on the 2021 Repco Supercars Championship calendar, but there’s plenty of character across the 2.4 kilometres. Turns 1 and 2 are tricky for drivers, with the exit of the opening series of corners vital for the long drag through the Turn 3 kink and approaching

Turn 4. The Turn 4 hairpin is the crucial point of the circuit, not only as an overtaking opportunity but where drivers can set up the run on an opponent on the exit. The drive from the hairpin includes the Turn 5 kink and into another big breaking point at the tight Turn 6, which presents another overtaking opportunity.

Turn 7 is another challenge for drivers on the run to the end of the lap, with the temptation to push too hard resulting in kicking up dirt on exit and compromising the current and following laps. The circuit opened in 1960 and first hosted the Australian Touring Car Championship in 1969, the first multi-round championship. Initially hosting the final round of

the season, Symmons Plains Raceway moved from the end to the start of the calendar in the 1970s. After an absence between 2000 and 2003, the addition of new permanent facilities and other developments saw the circuit become a regular fixture on the calendar from 2004, only missing out since then in 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

SUPPORT CATEGORIES SUPER TRUCKS

The fan-favourite Super Trucks make their debut at Symmons Plains Raceway at the Beaurepaires Tasmania SuperSprint. Featuring identically prepared high-horsepower trucks making spectacular jumps and riding curbs on two wheels, there is sure to be plenty of action in their first appearance in Tasmania. Created by former IndyCar P32

and NASCAR racer Robby Gordon, the American series has raced at Australian events since 2015 and grown in popularity ever since. The Australian version of Super Trucks came into being in 2020 and is run out of Paul Morris Motorsport’s Norwell Motorplex in Norwell, Queensland. The trucks are powered by a

600-hp Chevrolet LS V8 engine with a three-speed transmission and can reach speeds as high as 230 km/h. The trucks are identical to each other, with drivers only allowed to change things such as spring rates, ride heights and camber in order to maintain parity. Visit StadiumSuperTrucks. com for more information.

SUPPORT CATEGORIES AUSSIE RACING CARS

The Aussie Racing Cars are not only one of the most entertaining and competitive categories in Australia, they are also perfectly suited to the Symmons Plains Raceway layout. Despite their small size, the Aussie Racing Cars have a lot of power with a 1.3-litre, 135bhp, twin-cam, 16 valve engine that revs up to 11500rpm. Their favourable power to weight ratio also results in fastpaced action, with maximum speeds in excess of 200km/h, with the fast and flowing Symmons Plains Raceway resulting in a slipstreaming battle when racing in Tasmania. Nick Simmons leads the championship following the opening round of the season at the Mount Panorama Circuit in Bathurst in February, ahead of Craig Woods and Joel Heinrich. Kody Garland won the opening race of the season and sits in fifth in the championship standings, while Olympic medallist John Steffensen is currently inside the top 10 following a consistent run at Bathurst. Visit AussieRacingCars.com. au for more information.
