NOVEMBER 10, 2016

JANUARY 29, 2017

Are you an 8th grader who is interested in attending Shoreland? If so, Pacer for a Day is a great way for you to experience the school and all that it has to offer. Our faculty and high school student volunteers will welcome over 150 8th graders to our campus for the day. The schedule includes devotion, classroom presentations from each department, STEM focused activities, hot lunch, and other group activities. Meet current and future Pacers and Pacer teachers as you get to know our campus and the programs we offer.

Parents of prospective 7th and 8th grade students are invited to come and enjoy a special open house opportunity at Shoreland. Parents will be treated to a delicious brunch while hearing presentations from Shoreland administrators on a variety of topics. Meet Shoreland teachers, ask questions, and take a guided tour of our facility.

If you are an 8th grader who would like to attend Pacer for a Day, please contact Mr. Huebner at 262-859-2595 or huebnerp@slhs.us.

OUR MISSION Compelled by the love of Christ, Shoreland Lutheran High School exists to EDUCATE, EQUIP, and ENCOURAGE students for lives of Christian service. • Become life-long students of God’s Word, so that the Holy Spirit can strengthen their faith, knowledge and devotion.

• Recognize their unique identity as God’s children, stewards, and witnesses in an increasingly non-Christian world.

• Recognize the relationship between the things of this world and the grace of God in every area of the curriculum.

• Recognize their particular calling, vocation or career as a blessed way in which they are privileged to serve God and their neighbor.

• Strive for excellence in every aspect of their lives as a way to thank God for His grace.

• Recognize the Christian family and congregation as special places for excelling in spiritual activity, godly commitment and loving service.

Our mission statement exemplifies itself in all that we do in the areas of Christian training, daily worship life, academics, social skills, athletics, and the fine arts. Shoreland Lutheran High School assists our families by challenging students.

OUR VISION Our vision is that Shoreland Lutheran High School is to be the premier faith-based school located between Milwaukee and Chicago. We will achieve this by continuing to serve our federation congregations and schools, as well as pursuing other opportunities for enrollment growth that God is placing before us. We will serve all these students by building on the educational excellence that has existed for more than 40 years, allowing both Christian education and quality education to be available to parents and students.

Accreditation The Board of Directors of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod School Accreditation (WELSSA) has issued a status of Exemplary Accreditation to Shoreland Lutheran High School. Shoreland has proven compliance with WELSSA’s rigorous educational standards and is a member in good standing, recently completing it’s second self study in 2015.

curiosity ACADEMICS Curriculum

Technology

Shoreland Lutheran High School offers classes that prepare students to become successful servant leaders. The following departments pave a student’s successful path through high school at Shoreland: • Business & Life Skills • Computer Science • English • Fine Arts • Mathematics • Physical Education • Religion • Science • Social Studies • STEM (PLTW) • World Languages

The way students learn is changing rapidly as parents and schools prepare children for the future. Schools must continue to do what they can to prepare students for jobs that haven’t yet been created. As a Google Apps for Education school, Shoreland utilizes Chromebooks for its 1:1 technology initiative. Shoreland Lutheran High School is preparing students with technology-based projects such as Chrome Academy and Chrome Depot. Under the supervision of the Director of Techology, these projects allow students to serve other students and teachers at SLHS with Google expertise and Chromebook repair skills.

WE THINK CRITICALLY, S 64% of the jobs that today’s middle schoolers will have one day, haven’t yet been created.

STEM Academy Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) are booming fields of study across the globe. According to US News, there were 5.7 million STEM related job openings in 2013, 4.4 million of which required a bachelor’s degree. Shoreland stands ready to prepare students for lives of Christian service in STEM fields by facilitating the Project Lead The Way (PLTW) curriculum. Students who finish the STEM program at Shoreland are eligible to receive college credit from the Milwaukee School of Engineering. Along with the potential for college credit, being in the STEM Academy at Shoreland opens doors for students to participate in various internships with local companies. In 2016, a Shoreland STEM Academy student had the opportunity to take part in the Wisconsin Space Grant Consortium - an organization funded by NASA - at Carthage College.

Last year’s Senior class brought in over $1M in scholarships (an average of $15k/student.)

PLTW Course Areas include: PLTW BIOMEDICAL SCIENCE • Principles of Biomedical Science (PBS) • Human Body Systems (HBS) coming 2017-2018 • Medical Interventions (MI) coming 2018-2019 PLTW ENGINEERING • Introduction to Engineering Design (IED) • Principals of Engineering Design (POE) • Aerospace Engineering (AE) PLTW COMPUTER SCIENCE • Introduction to Computer Science (ICS)

82% of the Class of 2016 are attending 4-year college and 17% attend 2-year college or the military.

SOLVE PROBLEMS, COLLA STEM Academy in Action Two years in a row, Shoreland STEM Academy students have participated in and won the Design and Build Challenge sponsored by General Electric at the Milwaukee Maker Faire. In 2015, we sent one team of four students who defeated a dozen teams of professional engineers and college engineering students. In 2016, we sent two teams and they not only defended their title, but took both 1st and 2nd place!

SERVICE Training young people for lives of Christian service is essential to our mission at Shoreland Lutheran High School. To facilitate this, we provide a multitude of service opportunities for our students through our different teams, clubs, and organizations. Our students run blood drives, collect food and clothing for homeless shelters, and sing Christmas carols at nursing homes. They have raised thousands of dollars and donated hundreds of hours raising awareness for different causes such as autism, leukemia, diabetes, down syndrome, foster care and adoption. Of all of the special service opportunities in which our students participate, the most notable and most involved is the Night to Shine.

Night to Shine Sponsored by the Tim Tebow Foundation, Night to Shine is held simultaneously on one night around the world, and Shoreland Lutheran is blessed to be one of the host sites for this wonderful event. The purpose of Night to Shine is to provide an unforgettable prom night experience, centered on God’s love, for people with special needs, ages 14 and older. Every guest receives a crown or tiara and is treated as a king or queen of the prom as we celebrate life and God’s love for all people. Nearly half of our student body takes part in the festivities, having a ball, making new friends, and sharing the love of Jesus with all those in attendance.

ST, AND SERVE OTHERS Every morning our students, faculty, and staff have the opportunity to join in worship during our chapel devotions. All of our students also spend another period of their day studying God’s Word in our various religion classes.
