Let’s kick-off the club year with our first major fundraiser. The Annual Gourmet Sandwich Luncheon is scheduled rd for Tuesday August 3 at First Presbyterian Church from 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. The cost is $8.00 As in years past, Members are committed but not limited to selling (4) lunches each.

Reservations may be placed and are encouraged so we can be more accurate when purchasing food and supplies! Contact Stephanie Larkin, by phone 423-312-5105 or by e-mail indicate the name of the guest(s), whether lunch will be dine-in or take-out, and if they will pay at the door or will have pre-paid, or a club

member is paying. Please promote the event by placing flyers in hightraffic locations around town (churches, offices, stores, etc.) Don’t forget to ask for permission. I have attached a flyer to this e-mail for your convenience. Let’s aim to feed 500 community supporters this year!!

WINE TASTING SUMMER SOCIAL The Executive Board is hosting a Membership Social and Wine Tasting event Thursday, August th 19 at the home of club member, Lynn Spain.

Members are encouraged to invite friends, co-workers, and family that have an interest in volunteer work and want to make new and lasting friendships.

Social time will begin at 5:30 p.m. with the presentation to begin at 6:30 p.m. by professional wine judge and local business owner, Mrs. Connie Shepherd.

Report Volunteer Service It has been a long, enjoyable summer! Don’t forget to record all the ways you have volunteered this summer during our well-deserved break. Just because we don’t have monthly meetings during the summer months, our hard work should not go unrecognized!

The GFWC of TN Summer Board and State Fall Conference will be on August 13-15 at the Airport Hilton in Alcoa, TN.

All board members and are needed, and all members are welcomed, so please everyone try to attend if your schedule permits.

The theme for this year’s Fall State Conference is “Imagine, Inspire, Invest”

We would love to have a significant turnout of members to represent Somo Sala since the conference is so close to home.

SSC needs your recipes The Executive Board has approved compiling a cookbook as a fundraiser to sell at the luncheons, CIC events, meetings, and at other events held in the community. Although this will be a very profitable fundraiser for the club, a lot of work will be put into its creation over the next year. With that being said, we need you to submit your best recipes so we can get the process started. We are currently accepting all recipes at this time…desserts, main dishes, appetizers, sides, etc. Please don’t forget to bring your favorite recipes to a monthly club meeting or email your favorite recipes to subject: SSC Cookbook

You will be hearing from JoAnne Simpson and Jean Schmidt, who will be contacting members for their help volunteering for the Annual Luncheon Fundraiser this month. This fundraiser essentially sets our budget for the club year, so we ask everyone to please volunteer to help in some way. Remember no donation is ever too small.

*Please make and deliver in disposable containers, and do NOT pre-cut desserts. The money raised at this event enables us to make contributions to various charities in our community throughout the club year. I know we are starting the year off and running...and I greatly appreciate your support with this fundraiser!

American Artist Appreciation Month I challenge you to find the inner artist in you this month. Our community is full of incredibly talented men and women. I encourage you to take advantage of our region and the artistic culture that surrounds us. August is American Artist Appreciation Month. Do you have a favorite American artist?

Some ways to support American Artist Month are attend an art show, visit a museum, educate yourself

by reading a book or watching a documentary on a particular artist of interest, or contribute to the arts education and art activities in and around our community this month. Don’t forget to report your efforts on the volunteer service form. Thank you to our artists all over the nation for inspiring us and enriching our lives!

While you’re at it… Sunday, st August 1 look for an article in the Citizen Tribune and a photo promoting our sandwich luncheon fundraiser. I need volunteers to appear in the photo for the paper so call or e-mail me if you want to be in the photo. The photo op is scheduled for Tuesday, July th 27 10:30 am at First Presbyterian Church. Don’t forget to bring your apron!

WOMEN’S SELF DEFENSE CLASS The class instructor is Phil Hurst, owner, Victory Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, who has offered to donate his time for us. Somo Sala Circle is proud to announce the offering of a FREE selfdefense class for all interested members!

The class will be held on th September 20 from 6-8 p.m. at Red Dragon Martial Arts Center (across from the Department of Education).

Again, there is no charge for this opportunity! A sign-up sheet will be available at the September club meeting or call Stephanie Larkin at 423-3125105 or e-mail: to reserve your spot. If you don’t want to participate remember you can always come and be a supportive observer!

ARTS IN THE PARK Joanne Simpson, Arts Coordinator, wants you to mark your calendars for the annual Arts in the Park event to be held September 18th from 9am-4pm at Martin Luther King Park.

Remember school is getting ready to start back and this is a great opportunity to have some time with your children or grandchildren.

I hope everyone had a terrific summer! I am very excited and honored to be your club president for the 2010-2011 club year.
