Being in the midst of award season, movie names are heard everywhere. One title that is among the most common is Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln. This cast received Screen Actor’s Guild Awards for Best Actor in leading and in supporting roles, along with a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Motion Picture. Lincoln is a historical nonÀction Àlm about the 1th president of the United States. Spielberg Àlled it with emotion, entertainment, and education. In addition to the awards it has already won, Lincoln is nominated for 12 Academy Awards including Best Picture. The story starts out in the midst of a battle between Union and Confederate soldiers. After the battle has Ànished two white soldiers approach president Lincoln (David Day-Lewis) and try to recite the Gettysburg address; they failed to complete it. However, an African American soldier steps up once they leave and recites the entire thing. The movie takes place in 15 and follows Lincoln and those around him as he tries to pass the 13th amendment, which would make slavery unconstitutional. While everyone near him is

skeptical of his plans he eventually convinces Secretary of State William Seward (David Strathairn), that the amendment is the best thing for the country and from that they convince enough house representatives to pass it. Among other awards, three actors received Oscar nominations for their work in this movie. The Àrst was Daniel Day-Lewis who played President Lincoln. This nomination is much deserved. Lewis managed to convey Lincoln as the powerful historical Àgure that he was, while at the same time creating a friendly and relatable character. Tommy Lee Jones as powerful Republican congressman Thaddeus Stevens, and Sally Field as Mary Todd Lincoln both performed phenomenally and brought a much more personal and emotional level to the Àlm. This movie really had it all. It was an accurate historical representation of the events at this time, but also managed to entertain in a way that nonÀction generally doesn’t accomplish. Spielberg decided to include scenes that captured Lincoln’s family life as well as his political life which really brought emotion into play. The scene where Lincoln and his oldest son argue about Robert joining the army shows a dynamic that most

Daniel Day-Lewis stars as the 16th president of the United States in Steven Spielberg’s movie Lincoln. Day-Lewis won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Drama. Lincoln is nominated for a Best Picture Oscar.

viewers experience within their own families, but is not commonly showed in historical representations. At two and a half hours, this movie can seem rather long, but every scene packs a punch which makes it easier to sit through. Watching this movie gives the viewer a sense of empowerment. It shows that dreams are always within reach. Lincoln shows people of every shape and size Àghting for what they think is right. The MPAA rating on this Àlm is

PG-13 for an intense scene of war violence, some images of carnage and brief strong language. Overall this is an appropriate rating. Children under 13 would probably be uncomfortable with this Àlm’s intensity, and even children just above 13 could Ànd it hard to follow. It is a great Àlm for anyone who loves history, or just feels like watching a great movie.

4.5/5 Rated PG 13 for an intense scene of war violence, some images of carnage and brief strong language

Out of the 12 players on the starting lineup, four have never played a Varsity match. “The general feel of this season is rebuilding,â€? Boys Varsity Tennis captain Jeremy Tong said. The tennis season is off to a rough start this spring. With the empty spots that last year’s seniors left behind, this is a year to rebuild the team talent. Two freshmen joined the team along with two middle schoolers. Another obstacle the team will have to overcome this year is their delay in court availability due to the snow. The team had begun practices as scheduled on Apr. 1, but after two cancelled practices they had to move to the Fred Wells Tennis and Education Center at Fort Snelling. Freshman George Stiffman, who is new to the team this year, has kept a positive attitude towards the weather. “The weather is frustrating and not very tennis friendly, but the Fort Snelling courts are pretty close so it’s not too bad,â€? Stiffman said. In terms of rebuilding, Stiffman says he hasn’t noticed much because he is new to the team but ´DVDWHDPZHGHĂ€QLWHO\KDYHZRUN to do.â€? Tong has made his agreement clear. “We had to take in a lot of new guys this year,â€? Tong said, “We really need to make sure that everyone has the basic skills to play.â€? Of the new players this year, four are in the starting line up, much more than previous years. Because of these setbacks the team, which is generally regarded as one of SPA’s more competitive, is not expecting a high-scoring season. Tong is prepared for a year of growth, saying that “the matches we play will be tougher this year.â€? The team’s next match is against St. Anthony at SPA’s own tennis courts.

Spring Sports Snow Days

Photo Credit: Laura Slade The snowy bench in the dugout, absent of baseball and softball players, represents the harsh reality of the season so far, even though the teams began Spring Training in mid-March. When the teams are able to play more regularly outside of hard-to-acquire dome space, rescheduled games will pack their schedules with up to seven games a week.
