The birthstone for March is, apparently, aquamarine. This has no impact on anything other than that, in the Middle Ages, it was considered to be a superior sort of stone to make crystal balls out of, and we’re getting into that period of 2018 when looking forward becomes important.

March is that part of the year when most New Year’s resolutions have awkwardly petered out, the first school holidays (and the resulting productivity issues) are arriving, tax cycles are kicking off again and the heat of summer and all its happy connotations is starting to waver.

What you need this month is either assurance that the manner in which you’ve started is strong and worth pressing ahead with, or that just a tweak to your plan for the year will see you right.

Early immigrants In the bones of a buried child, scientists see signs of a massive human migration to the Americas. The girl was just six weeks old when she died.

Her body was buried on a bed of antler points and red ochre, and she lay undisturbed for 11,500 years. Archaeologists discovered her in an ancient burial pit in Alaska in 2010, and in January this year an international team of scientists reported they had retrieved the child’s genome from her remains. The analysis, published in the journal Nature, shows that the child belonged to a hitherto unknown human lineage, a group that split off from other Native Americans just after – or perhaps just before – they arrived in North America. The study strongly

supports the idea that the Americas were settled by migrants from Siberia.

Beth VerSteeg took a selfie showing the empty seats on her flight from Rochester, New York, to Washington, DC. She received VIP treatment after scoring a seat on a plane intended solely for airline staff. VerSteeg’s flight had been cancelled and passengers were moved to the 'crew only' aircraft.

When the airline realised its mistake, it contacted the people affected. But Beth missed the announcement.

REASONS WHY DANCING IS GOOD FOR YOU

1. IT BOOSTS SELF-ESTEEM Several studies have shown that dancing can help to increase feelings of self-worth.

In one 2007 study, researchers from Laban and Hampshire Dance found that children aged between 11 and 14 who took part in creative movement classes reported improved self-esteem, motivation and more positive attitudes towards dance, as well as better physical fitness.

2. IT HELPS YOU FIND A MATE It was Charles Darwin who suggested that dancing can act as a form of sexual selection, and research suggests that we are indeed communicating to potential mates when we strut our stuff. A 2011 study asked women to rate men on their dancing prowess. The winning formula?

3. IT TACKLES DEPRESSION Dancing has been shown to reduce feelings of depression. But different dancing styles have different effects. In a study led by Andrew Lane at the University of Wolverhampton, dancing characterised by relaxed, free-flowing movements helped to improve mood, whereas dancing in a physically contracted way had the opposite effect.

4. IT HELPS SOLVE PROBLEMS Just five minutes of freestyle dancing is enough to increase your creativity, according to researchers at Sheffield and York Universities. In 2014, participants were asked to dance, cycle or sit quietly while listening to music, and it was the dancers who showed improvements in both mood and creative problem-solving.

5. IT RELIEVES PAIN Rugby is a tough game played by tough people. But some rugby players will dance before a game – just think of the New Zealand team’s haka. In 2015, researchers at the University of Oxford found that group dancing can increase a person’s threshold for pain.

Dancing, it seems, can release endorphins, helping to take the sting out of a full-contact tackle. As with any intense physical activity, dancing can also release endorphins – the feel-good, pain-relieving brain chemicals responsible for the so-called ‘runner’s high’.

forecast Lighter lenses Physics could soon make it possible to replace bulky glass lenses on cameras with waferthin ‘metalenses’ – materials microscopically engineered to focus light at a fraction of the weight and size of traditional lensing.

A team from Harvard University's school of engineering has designed a metalens that can focus nearly the entire spectrum of visible light, as reported in the journal Nature Nanotechnology.

Previous metalenses could focus only narrow colour wavelengths, or wavelengths outside the visible spectrum.

When light moves through glass, the different wavelengths (colours) that make up the light slow at different rates. This causes their paths through the glass to bend, or diffract, differently, so that they separate.

through a prism, and this effect will cause a rainbow to burst out the other end. This presents a challenge to lens-makers; a single focusing element will project an image that has colours from red to violet hitting different spots on the film or sensor.

Modern camera lenses use many different glass elements to correct and reverse that effect, pushing the different wavelengths of light back onto a single focal point – and even that doesn't work perfectly. And all that aberration-correcting bulk can get heavy.

A metalens takes a different approach to focusing light. Instead of exploiting the diffraction properties of glass, a metalens uses nanofins – tiny structures, typically made of titanium dioxide – to bend wavelengths toward the metalens focal point.

Called Sleepbuds, these tiny wireless headphones are designed to be put in at night and can then play one of 10 different soundscapes.

Although they can be controlled wirelessly by a smartphone app, the Sleepbuds aren’t wireless headphones in the conventional sense. They can’t stream music: they simply play one of 10 tracks pre-installed in each earbud.

Each track has been specially designed to block out the outside world while still creating an environment within which a person can sleep comfortably.

Sossusvlei is a bucket-list destination for every visitor to Namibia Sossusvlei is possibly Namibia’s most spectacular and best-known attraction. It’s surrounded by high, red dunes, and located in the southern part of the Namib Desert, in the Namib-Naukluft National Park of Namibia.

The Naukluft and Tsaris mountains to the east, and the impressive dunes to the west, make the journey to Sossusvlei one of the best roads to drive in southern Africa.

Sossusvlei translates to ‘dead-end marsh’, as it is the place where the dunes come together, preventing the Tsauchab River from flowing any further. During exceptional rainy seasons, the Tsauchab fills the pan, drawing visitors from all over the world to witness its splendour. Budding photographers will want to capture the glassy ‘lake’ with reflections of the surrounding dunes. When the pan fills, it can hold water for a year.

The Namib’s red sand shimmers during sunrise and sunset; a stunning scene to admire. The dunes are among the highest in the world; many of them are above 200m.

Desert drives

Travelling from Swakopmund via the bustling harbour of Walvis Bay to Sossusvlei, the C19 winds its way along the edge of the vast Namib desert, facing everchanging landscapes. If you’re driving from Windhoek, the C26 takes you over the Kupferberg (copper

mountain) and down towards the desert. Either way, you can marvel at Nature’s work on your drive. Take care on the C26, which is predominately a gravel road, and stick to the 60km/h speed limit.

If you’re travelling via Solitaire, take care when driving the C14 gravel road. It is worth stopping to grab a slice of the Big Moose Bakery’s apple strudel.

Sesriem is 83km from Solitaire, and a further 60km will take you to Sossusvlei. You have to buy a permit to enter, worth it because when you pass through the gate, you will discover an alternative universe. From here on, for instance, you can marvel at the sunblackened remains of the camelthorn trees, some more than 500 years old. The route is primarily gravel, so consider a four-wheel drive vehicle that has plenty of traction and ground clearance.

There’s a starker coolness when you slip into the pool, which is far colder than could reasonably be expected given the 35°C heat you’re trying to temporarily escape from between game drives and being plied with gin and tonics – for the quinine, obviously – and delicious snacks (the heat is the only hardship, clearly).

Tea, the next food-related activity – it’s been minutes since the last one – comprises bobotie spring rolls

and marshmallow brownies, a supremely unlikely combination, but one that turns out to be an algorithm for happiness.

The rooms are large rectangular safari tents, combining modern minimalism with touches of the more traditional wood and canvas chic associated with such expeditionfocused venues. One ‘wall’ is opened up to let both a breeze and a vista of the plain and waterhole around which the camp is constructed into the room, just a sturdy mosquito mesh and a narrow balcony between you and the things that go bump (or ‘grrrr’, or ‘awooo’, or ‘shnerfff’) in the night. After dark, a discreetly placed infra-red light – invisible to the animals – helps you to identify what’s out there, which could be useful if you’re not sure you’re compatible …

Open season Game drives in this part of Hwange involve visiting a number of open areas, many featuring pans and waterholes, linked by sections through overhanging woodlands – slim teak trunks and what the ranger calls ‘ordeal trees’. He explains that the roots of the latter are boiled by shamans as part of a local ritual. People are made to drink the tannin-rich fluid to show who is guilty of causing a curse when someone in the community has died. If you vomit, you’re supposedly innocent.

“It’s easy to manipulate people who are feeling ill into feeling guilty,” he remarks.

Along the eastern side of the reserve, there’s a railway track, with a large forestry area on the other side. Sit for a while and you might see a tram trundling down to a

lodge further south. Bounce off that boundary like the weird square ball in a game of Pong, and you’re suddenly onto a corner of the Ngamo Plains, a massive, flat expanse ideal for sightings of everything from herds of elephants to solitary storks.

A lone gnu protects his territory in the middle of the huge plateau, even though his position leaves him completely exposed to predators. Perhaps that’s his strategy: “I’m not dead, so I can be a good provider – join me anytime.”

The sunset is soft, pink and beautiful, framed on one side by a windmill that helps keep one of the central waterholes active, enhancing both the barren desolation and the uncultivated beauty of the place.

Driving back in the dark, a small cat peers through some thick grass in the distance, identifiable only by its eyes and the vague outline of its head. Unidentified, heavy bugs slam into our chests, drawn by the headlights but enthusiastically over-shooting the runway. And a large leaf in the middle of the road suddenly flits up and over our heads, transforming into a nightjar as it does so.

Now it’s personal In the bar before dinner, locals of various stripes discuss the challenges of living in Zimbabwe (at the time of writing, Robert Mugabe was still hanging on by his fingernails), including there being no fuel at all in the town of Victoria Falls that week, with daily forays into nearby Kasane, in Botswana, being a provisional necessity. All of this commentary is delivered with dry grins and the occasional shrug, though. No panic; no hint of getting out being a priority.

– a cool, stiff wind comes up, making napkin retention a challenge but otherwise creating a rather pleasant ambience.

The rangers join their clients for dinner, making for a rather more immersive relationship than just having a route pointed out, or being gently corrected when it comes to your guess about the particular species of thrush or weaver you saw from a distance earlier.

It seems my man is as appreciative of a friendly ear as I am a traveller on my own, and before dessert I am up to date on the considerable intricacies of his life, which includes trying circumstances involving his partner’s family’s acceptance of him as a husband for their daughter and sister. It’s an edifying chat that brings into sharp focus the trials of having a satisfying, interesting job, but one that requires time away from home, and it increases the intensity of my gratitude for the warmth of his and his colleagues’ hospitality.

Barriers somewhat dismantled, it’s time, over cappuccinos, for an mbira showcase, with the ranger producing from somewhere two of his own custommade hand pianos, along with a sounding bowl that amplifies the music. His performance is fluid, quickfingered and relaxed. A man in his element.

Ready to go The departure day wake-up call is early, to allow for another full game drive before boarding the Cessna Caravan that returns guests (reluctantly) to Victoria Falls Airport. While waiting for an escort down the boardwalk in the lessening gloom, a springhare bounds across the gap between my room and the next one – thrilling, but a reminder of the potential for risk if something less cuddly comes along.

Safely in the lodge area, that potential is underlined by the approach of a large troop of baboons, kept from helping themselves to our early morning snacks by staff who are accustomed to such interruptions. It’s fascinating to watch, as the primates differentiate between male and female flailers – they’re simply not afraid of the ladies (proving, again, that they’re not as advanced as humans).

One petite, pretty assistant manager comes back from a sortie shaking her head: “I’m getting a moustache!”

Grinning, we head to the airport, enjoying a particularly sweet farewell from Linkwasha – 10 adult wild dogs and a litter of 12 boisterous, yelping pups.

It’s a dog’s life.

island Holidaymakers can sample a number of different styles of hotels and resorts in Nosy Be

I had only been in Madagascar for half an hour and could already feel its magic. Our driver stopped the car a few kilometres from Nosy Be airport and walked into the plantation of gnarly trees on the side of the road, reappearing with a handful of creamy yellow flowers. "Here, smell," he said, crushing them under my nose. As the sweet fragrance filled the car, I realised this was ylang ylang, an exotic ingredient for perfumes.

Nosy Be is a jumping-off point to explore the coastline and many smaller islands scattered off north-west Madagascar. Knowing little about Madagascar, we had booked our trip with Sabine Bultemeier of Animaltracks Islandventures. After spending a night at Vanila Hotel (with its magnificent tropical garden and private beach), we boarded a small boat.

Our destination was Naturalia Lodge, an hour away

on an isolated 12km-long stretch of white beach on the mainland (Madagascar itself). Here we discovered lemurs, snorkelled on coral reefs and saw exotic birds.

But for me, the highlight was the ecolodge itself. The 10 bungalows, made from natural materials, are scattered around the indigenous forest. There is no pumped water, with a simple system of scooping water from a large barrel next to the shower all you need. There are also self-composting toilets and an ingenious solar water heating system. Outside each bungalow is a large box filled with plastic water bottles. The box has a glass lid and the sun heats up the water bottles, perfect for a hot shower to warm up after snorkelling. A similarly inventive system is used to pour water into the basin – which has no taps. Instead, a piece of hollow bamboo has a spout attached to its side. We scooped water from the barrel into the bamboo, and it slowly poured out of the spout into the basin. Magical.

Diving and de-stressing From Naturalia we went to Sakatia Lodge, a dive resort on Sakatia Island. Here, the magic is found underwater.

Sakatia Lodge is a mecca for divers from around the world. Their NAUI centre offers a range of dives, from shallow pristine coral to night dives, walls and steep drop-offs. There is a reef that rings the island and is perfect for snorkelling. We spent hours marvelling at the kaleidoscopic assortment of coral and tropical fish, and watching giant turtles graze on sea grass.

Just a short hop away, we were back on Nosy Be. After exploring the island in a 4x4, we were hot and tired when we arrived at Home La Residence, on the northern tip of the island. We were greeted with tropical rum cocktails and an infinity pool, idyllic after our dusty trip. This is a self-catering lodge with a variety of options for couples to family groups. There is also the option of eating at the appealing restaurant. To further de-stress, there is a spa

situated under a massive (and surely magical) banyan tree, its multiple branches creating an oasis of calm and serenity.

Feel rejuvenated Our final stop was Ravintsara Wellness Hotel, on the west coast of the island. Here, our welcoming drink was a large, fresh coconut with a straw – naturally delicious.

Set in five hectares of sub-tropical gardens, Ravintsara's spa, hammam and reflexology salon overlook lily ponds surrounded by psychedelic red and orange heliconias and coconut palms. The swimming pool, with palm trees in the middle, is on the edge of the beach, almost merging with the sea. From here, I watched our last sunset, brilliantly tinged with tropical pink. A perfect rejuvenation spot to end a magical holiday.

The American Museum of Natural History in Manhattan is one of the largest museums in the world. For a sense of scale, consider the Barosaurus skeleton in its entrance hall.

The reptile was around 26m long and 12m tall, weighing approximately 20 tonnes (its name means ‘heavy lizard’), and yet it doesn’t get anywhere near the roof or the walls. Some scientists feel that the particular specimen in the museum wasn’t even close to the largest of its kind, with there being a possibility that some individuals might have grown to 50m long and weighed 100 tonnes!

Early Dutch settlers started drinking rooibos tea as a cheaper alternative to expensive black tea from Europe. In 1772, European botanist, Carl Thunberg, visited the Cape to report on the rooibos plant and its tea variant.

In 1904, Russian immigrant Benjamin Ginsberg recognised the potential of the product and started trading with rooibos tea. This made him the first ever exporter of rooibos and the Ginsberg family continues to market rooibos today.

Setting the honesty bar You can’t always fire employees with false credentials

Common law entitles employers to know all the facts about a prospective employee relevant to a job application.

Employees are obliged to: divulge information relevant to the decision to appoint them where it is clear that the employer requires it; answer certain questions truthfully; and avoid exaggerating job qualifications.

For example, a person applying for a job as a driver must say if he or she does not have a driver’s licence. However, where the information withheld is not relevant to job suitability, it’d be dangerous for the employer to act. For instance, had the above job been as an internal office messenger, a dismissal might’ve been inappropriate.

Generally, job applicants are required to answer relevant recruitment questions truthfully. However, what is relevant is debatable. A job applicant may be able to claim that she wasn’t obliged to answer a question as to whether she was pregnant truthfully because it has nothing to do with her ability to do the job. Her employer might then argue that maternity leave would

interrupt the job. However, they would need to prove that the job required continuity and that alternative measures were impossible.

Truth must matter It’s not enough for the employer to prove the employee guilty of misrepresentation. The employer must prove that honesty is essential. In NUMSA on behalf of Engelbrecht vs Delta Motor Corporation (1998, 5 BALR 573), the employee had failed to disclose that he had been fired for theft by his previous employer. He had lied during his job interview by saying that he had resigned from the previous employer. Delta Motor Corporation fired the employee for misrepresentation. Despite the lie, the CCMA found that the dismissal was unfair, ordering the employer to reinstate the employee. This was because the employer had condoned a similar lie told by another employee.

In the case of Hoch vs Mustek Electronics (Pty) Ltd (1999, 12 BLLR 1287), the employee was dismissed for having misrepresented her qualifications. The Labour Court ruled her dismissal to be fair because her dishonesty had destroyed the trust relationship.

In NETU on behalf of Van Dyk vs Amcoal Colliery and Industrial Operations Ltd (2001, 12 BALR 1295), the employee was dismissed for lying about his qualifications as an artisan. However, the employer was unable to prove that Van Dyk had lied, and was ordered to reinstate the employee with full back pay.

Proof of possible lies must be brought to a disciplinary hearing chaired by an impartial chairperson who’s fully competent to assimilate the evidence and arrive at a finding that will stand up in court.

(Internet of) Things to think about Common sense and good passwords can keep you safe

Internet of Things (IoT) devices are basically devices with network connectivity – equipped with embedded technology that allows them to interact with each other or the external environment. Because of the large number and variety of devices available, the IoT has become an attractive target for cybercriminals. This includes, among others, the recordbreaking DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attacks of 2016 that were launched with the help of a massive botnet made up of routers, IP cameras, printers and other devices.

By successfully hacking IoT devices, criminals are able to blackmail people or spy on them. Other vectors can be even more dangerous. For example, your home network devices could be used to perform illegal activities, or a cybercriminal who has gained access to a device could blackmail – and spy on – its owner or extort money from him. The infected device can also simply be broken, though clearly this is not the worst thing that can happen.

With this in mind, Kaspersky Lab researchers decided to find out whether reports on smart ‘IoT’ products and the incidents that have occurred have changed the situation.

They analysed randomly selected smart devices: a smart battery charger, an app-controlled toy car, an appcontrolled smart scale, a smart vacuum cleaner, a smart iron, an IP camera, a smart watch, and a smart home hub.

The findings were worrying: of the eight devices, only one satisfied researchers’ security requirements.

Half of the devices could be compromised and exploited due to lack of vigilance in password settings.

This included having default passwords and an inability to change the password, while in some cases the password was unified for all devices in the product line.

Avoid the issues

Search the internet for news of vulnerabilities: The Internet of Things is a hot topic, and researchers are doing a great job of finding security issues in products of this kind, from baby monitors to app-controlled rifles. It’s likely that the device you’re going to purchase has been examined by security researchers and it is often possible to find out whether the issues have been patched or not.

It’s not always a good idea to buy the most recent products: Along with the standard bugs you get in new products, recently launched devices are more likely to contain security issues that haven’t yet been discovered. The best choice is to buy products that have already been through several software updates.

Going abroad – what cash you’re allowed to take with you and how you need to manage it Europe, America, Asia – for South Africans fortunate enough to do so, travelling abroad is something that they enjoy. It is common for travellers to buy foreign currency from an authorised dealer (AD), such as a bank, in order to pay for the expenses they will incur abroad. However, it is important to keep in mind that according to South Africa’s exchange control laws, there are rules regarding the use of such travel allowances.

Know your limit All South African persons who are 18 years or older are entitled to make use of the ‘single discretionary allowance’ (SDA). The SDA comprises an amount of R1 million per calendar year, which any South African resident (18 years or older) may use for any legal purpose abroad, without obtaining a tax clearance certificate. South African residents who are under the age of 18 years may be granted a maximum annual travel allowance of R200,000 per calendar year.

One of the legal purposes for which the SDA may be used is to take funds abroad in the form of travel allowances. In terms of the Currency and Exchanges Manual for Authorised Dealers (AD Manual), which must be read with the Exchange Control Regulations, 1961 (Regulations), travellers may take foreign currency up to the limit of their SDA abroad in the form of travel allowances. From a practical perspective, this means that if, for example, someone has used R100,000 of their SDA during the year before going on their December holiday, they may in principle apply to take foreign

currency up the value of R900,000 abroad. It is important for South African residents to keep track of the amount of their SDA that they have used in a calendar year, as exceeding that amount will constitute a contravention of regulations.

Travel allowances may be taken abroad in the form of foreign currency banknotes, travellers cheques or transfers to the traveller’s own bank account (or their spouse’s), but not to a third party’s bank account.

Minors’ travel allowances may also be transferred to their parents’ bank accounts abroad. Furthermore, you can also use your credit or debit cards to pay for travel expenses abroad, within your limit.

Paper trail Where people wish to make use of their SDA to buy foreign currency from an AD for travel outside the common monetary area (CMA) for southern Africa – which consists of Lesotho, Namibia, South Africa and Swaziland – they must produce their passenger tickets.

In such instances, they may not be given their foreign

currency more than 60 days before the date of departure, unless the funds are to be used for business travel or land arrangements. ‘Land arrangements’ refer to expenses related to tours, hotel accommodation and vehicle rental made at the request of South African travel agents or tour operators.

When making use of their SDA to apply for a travel allowance, prospective travellers must provide the AD with a written undertaking that they will: • travel within 60 days from the date of the request for foreign currency.

• not purchase foreign currency from an AD in excess of the applicable limits.

• will offer for resale all foreign currency that they received in the event of the trip being cancelled, to an AD or an ADLA (authorised dealer in foreign exchange with limited authority, such as bureaux de change).

• will offer for resale to an AD or ADLA any unused foreign currency within 30 days of returning to South Africa.

Single-use resource Although it might not be common knowledge, South African residents should be aware that any amounts taken or transferred abroad for purposes of travel may not be used for any other purpose, in terms of Regulation 2(4). Once a person has returned to South Africa from overseas travel, they must resell any remaining foreign currency to an AD or ADLA within 30 days, in terms of Regulation 2(5), read with Regulation 6(1). From a practical perspective, this means that if a person travels abroad with his family and has a foreign bank account, he may not deposit any unused portion of his travel allowance or any of his family members’ travel allowances into his foreign bank account and use it for investment purposes. Where this is done, the funds and the growth on such funds will constitute an unauthorised asset held in contravention of South Africa’s exchange control laws, on which an SA resident may have to pay a fine, or worse, forfeit the unauthorised asset completely and face criminal prosecution.

Business travellers who go on a business trip within 90 days of returning to South Africa from a previous business trip may retain such foreign currency to use during the next business trip. Where people have returned to South Africa from travelling abroad and have resold the unused portion of their travel allowance as required, they may use such amount at a later stage during the calendar year, as part of their SDA. Bringing Africa up to speed A few upgrades would see continental tourism revenues increase Over the last eight years, travel and tourism has grown by 17.3% in the top 10 fastest-growing global destinations. This rate speaks to how tourism is becoming an increasing priority for countries seeking new growth opportunities. In emerging markets, tourism grew from 30% in 1980 to 45% in 2015 and is expected to reach 57% by 2030.

Africa has not enjoyed the same growth rate, and although the continent offers a range of benefits, this sector remains a largely untapped opportunity. This is due to a number of challenges facing the sector, including security concerns.

Recognising the economic importance of solving these challenges was high on the agenda during the 2017 World Tourism Conference (WTC) held in Rwanda. The event was attended by tourism ministers from various African countries alongside tour operators, travel agents, hotels, airlines and key private sector players, who discussed a number of possible steps toward making this continent more attractive to travellers. Â

Easing of visa restrictions

Current visa restrictions prevent even Africans from exploring their own continent. The WTC highlighted the

complexity behind removing visas, especially considering that there are a number of factors, including security, that needs to be considered. However, consideration and solutions as to how countries can circumnavigate the concerns around the need for travel documents will go a long way to deciding to remove the need altogether.

Developing infrastructure that allows for easy travel Lack of adequate infrastructure makes it complicated to travel between destinations. One such example is a traveller trying to go from Kigali to Cape Verde.

Currently they need to take a number of connecting flights and routes, which is costly and a real issue for business travellers. As it stands, there is a critical need to further develop a strong airline and road network that connects African locations as well as consideration of smart ways to utilise existing infrastructure. There’s a need to develop smart, connected cities across Africa.

Technology will go a long way to boosting efficiencies that will have a long-term benefit on tourism.

Going cashless must be prioritised With 94% of retail transactions still in cash, there is a real need to displace cash given the benefits for consumers and the economy if behaviour is shifted.

Safety: Digital payments are far safer, and although in Africa the need still remains to have some cash available, it is important to develop a wider acceptance network that includes hotels and tourist hot spots.

Customer experience: COMESA (Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa) has launched a programme called from Cape Town to Cairo, providing travellers with a full itinerary to travel from, to and in-between these cities. The initiative is helping to take the pain out of having to carry multiple currencies when travelling.

The collaboration highlights the importance of similar initiatives, and close relationships between countries.

Increased tourism spending: Hospitality providers and retailers benefit from higher traffic and purchase power from consumers given the ease of paying for goods digitally.

Contribution to GDP growth: A Moody’s study showed that increased use of electronic payments added 0.8% to the GDP across emerging markets and 0.3% for developed markets. This was driven by higher potential tax revenue; lower cash handling costs; guaranteed payment for merchants; a reduction in the grey economy due to lower unreported cash transactions; and greater financial inclusion.

Taxing e-commerce is a fluid area in which South Africa may be in arrears Tax systems around the world are struggling to keep pace with the digitisation of commerce. Where tax systems could previously rely on technological constraints to protect budgets, they must now be adaptive to changes in e-commerce. After an initially proactive stance towards taxing e-commerce, South Africa may now be falling behind.

VAT, being a tax charged on the supply of goods and services, and its application to e-commerce, has given rise to a variety of compliance challenges for governments, as the digital environment transcends traditional jurisdictional boundaries.

The taxation of electronic services in South Africa was implemented on 1 June 2014, ahead of many other countries. The rules impose a liability on the supply of ‘electronic services’ by any supplier from a place in an ‘export country’ (any country other than South Africa) where at least two of the following factors are present: • The recipient is a South African resident.

• Payment for such electronic services originates from a registered bank.

• The recipient of the supply has a business, residential or postal address in South Africa.

Certain qualifying ‘electronic services’ were prescribed by the Minister of Finance, by regulation, in the Government Gazette on 28 March 2014. Simply stated, the VAT rules compel foreign merchants to register as South African VAT vendors and to account for VAT, among other things, where the foreign merchant provides electronic services to South African consumers or receives payment for such electronic services from a South African bank and the revenue exceeds R50,000 a year. This compulsory registration is significantly less than the registration threshold of R1 million that applies in relation to all other types of supplies. A foreign merchant who supplies ‘electronic services’ and who has registered as a vendor in South Africa is required to account for VAT at the standard VAT rate of 14% on all defined ‘electronic services’ provided by the foreign

merchant to South African customers. The rules in relation to taxation of electronic services were initially well received by business and it’s important to ensure that the VAT rules regarding e-commerce remain true to South Africa's VAT principles.

Playing catch-up As part of its comprehensive review of the South African tax system, the Davis Tax Committee (DTC) made certain recommendations in relation to VAT and e-commerce transactions in its Interim Report on VAT, released on 7 July 2015 (DTC VAT Report). These include, among other things, the following: • That supplies between group companies be excluded from the VAT rules.

• That the invoice basis of accounting for VAT be the default position.

• That no distinction be made between supplies made between businesses, so-called business-to-business (B2B) and business-to-consumer (B2C) supplies, and no concessions be granted by manipulating the list of qualifying electronic services. In considering the VAT e-commerce regulations in a broad manner, the DTC recommends that more flexible legislation is required to ensure South African VAT e-commerce legislation stays relevant.

The European Commission published its legislative proposals to drastically change the VAT rules for online sales of goods and services in Europe over the period from 2018 to 2021. From 2018, businesses within the European Union selling cross-border electronic services, not exceeding an annual turnover of €10,000, can opt to apply the rules of their home country. Another enhancement

applies to small enterprises selling online services with an annual turnover below €100,000. These companies will only have to collect one piece of evidence to demonstrate the location of the customer as opposed to the current two pieces of evidence required. In 2021, the different thresholds that exist for (VAT exempt) imports of goods for private consumers in the European Union and for sale to consumers across European Union borders will be abolished to eliminate perceived unfair competition and simplify tax administration.

In South Africa, the escalating problems of deteriorating revenue collection and further downward revisions to economic growth projections have eroded government's fiscal position. Tax revenue, as described in the Medium Term Budget Policy Statement, is projected to fall short of the 2017 Budget estimate by R50.8 billion, the largest under-collection since the 2009 recession. Fortunately, South Africa has a relatively low VAT policy gap owing to its relatively straightforward VAT policy structure. To ensure that this position is maintained, it is imperative that South Africa's e-commerce legislation keeps pace with recent developments and takes heed of the recommendations in the DTC VAT Report.

The proposal contained in the 2015 Budget that software be included in the list of electronic services in the regulations would also assist with broadening, strengthening and consolidating the VAT e-commerce base and will ensure that South Africa's e-commerce legislation remains current, thereby enabling the fiscus to realise the maximum potential tax revenue possible from e-commerce transactions ending in this country.

STS is what happens when you get your daughter’s boyfriend to build you a one-page website, but you’re too cheap to pay for your own domain. STS is what happens when you ask your PA to create your company’s Facebook page, but instead of a page, she creates a profile. STS is what happens when you, late one evening, decided to boost a post on your page and the next morning, the whole of Pakistan liked it. STS is what happens when your marketing manager spends more time designing leaflets than researching digital marketing trends.

STS happens, more often than not, to small business owners trying to do their best with limited capacity and resources. The challenge for most small businesses is managing their cash flow: seeing hard-earned money leaking through the expensive cracks of marketing campaigns is a tough pill to swallow. The knee-jerk reaction is to put the new world of digital marketing on hold and stick with the traditional stuff that you know works. Like sponsoring a four-ball at a golf game, or an ad in the local newspaper.

For those who have ventured into the new unknown, the gap between managing your digital marketing internally and hiring a smart digital agency on board is massive. So the company ends up doing it themselves and, most of the time, it happens on the side or gets dumped on the youngest person in the office who has the most active Instagram account. This is a fool-proof recipe for STS.

try out Google AdWords. After all, you’re a clever person – how hard can it be? After 50 minutes, you’re all set. Search campaign, keywords, ad group and an ad or two. That first week, you Google your company’s name like crazy, highly impressed to see your little ad showing at the top of the page.

Three months later, you’ve spent R15,000, but have nothing to really show for it, except a sudden spike in website traffic.

• Your website is the star of the show. Don’t bother creating ad campaigns if you’re not prepared to improve your website or build new landing pages.

If you are not a WordPress wizard, prepare to spend some money.You do not need an expensive or complicated website, but don’t expect magic for less than R10,000.

• You might love your office PC and still surf the web like Meg Ryan in You’ve Got Mail, but the rest of us are on mobile.

• You thought blogging is so 2000? Think again – blogs are back. So start writing.

• Whether you’re on Google or Facebook, targeting is key. Take your time to get your audience narrowed down and your keywords spot-on.

• You can never add too many negative keywords for your AdWords search campaign. This helps you block out the unwanted search queries and show your ads to the right audience at the right time.

• Use UTM tags – they’re a thing. Google it.

• People respond better to stories than to announcements.

• Your budget is in your control and what you spend is trackable.

AI will learn how to fight back In 2018, ‘defensive AI’ will be front and centre. Machine learning (ML) and AI will help companies to drive differentiation in competitive markets. This applies in the criminal world too, where attackers will use malicious AI and ML to circumvent the versions companies have in place.

AI will have to explain itself Explainable AI (XAI) will begin to answer the need for explanations for decisions based on scores, including those produced by AI and ML systems. We’ve long dealt with this challenge in fraud and credit risk decisioning, but in using ML across multiple industries, there are sets of proposed explanatory algorithms that are either right, ineffective or wrong.

The idea that AI and humans will play well together, rather than battling it out in a Terminator scenario, is not new. In 2018, AI will augment much more of the workplace. Not just through better software, but through the facilitation of increasingly better versions of ourselves. Whether it’s drawing information together to help us to be superhuman at investigation, data recall, or improving how we learn new topics, AI will augment our

ability to process new information. The question will be as to whether our human brains will atrophy, improve, or simply evolve to the rate and frequency of data.

AI will get operationalised More than 25 years after AI first gained widespread use in fighting payment card fraud, operationalising AI properly still poses a tremendous challenge for many organisations. Those that focused first on how to operationalise, care, and feed their AI systems and machine learning have been sufficiently rewarded – more than those that are enamoured with new algorithms or increases in computation complexity that often require more cloud space and more graphics processing power.

Chatbots will get better at understanding us In many aspects of society, it is becoming difficult to determine what is human versus a robot; organically occurring versus automated; and real versus fake.

In 2018, chatbots will become more sophisticated, dramatically reducing costs of routine customer care activities and improving customer experience. In the coming year, chatbots will understand the tone, content and predicted highest-value conversational paths to meet various objectives. On the dark side, this subtle ‘engagement’ can turn to manipulation through AI that learns the magic words to sway our attitude and actions.

AI will combine with blockchain

Beyond its association with cryptocurrencies, blockchain technology will soon record ‘time chains of events’, applied to contracts, interactions and occurrences. In these chains, people and the items they interact with will have encrypted identities. The blockchain distributed will be the single source of truth, allowing audit trails of data usage in models – particularly in data permission rights.

If the sector is successful, many more people can be employed than in the corporate sector, with jobs distributed across geographies and communities. How that money is being spent is another question, though.

In the enterprise development sector, bigger companies that are supported by the corporate giants, often as an outsourcing of non-core operations where exemployees are funded and supported to supply services to the company, make for a great model, because the companies begin business with an existing stable anchor client. Also great are construction companies that support the start-up of companies that can perform specific jobs on construction sites. These supplier companies are often run by experienced business people and have a great chance of success through valueadding relationships.

Challenges arise when initiatives are implemented during lay-offs; when negative industrial relations translate into negative supplier relationships; when small enterprises are militant; when organisations treat small businesses as employees instead of partners; when schemes created by the corporates make sense to their business but don’t consider the risks and needs of the small business owners; when the models are not profitable enough for the new owners to make a fair living; and when the lack of alignment between the parties erodes the value that could’ve been created.

Better education will pay off

great technical and process training in terms of the operational business needs, but weak ‘business skills’ workshops. The content is written by university professors, MBA graduates and training specialists with no understanding that small businesses have a different DNA from large businesses.

It’s important for large companies to re-think how they go about setting up small businesses in their supply chains. The success of small businesses developed in this context is often much higher than small businesses that start on their own.

The ‘anchor client’ is a huge asset – most businesses fail because they fail to find clients that will pay them.

But over time, this setup can also be the biggest weakness – over-reliance on one client.

New businesses should be engaged in finding alternative revenue sources as early in their company development cycle as possible.

It takes small businesses a while to settle into systems and processes. Corporates need to ensure that their procurement and supplier management teams are aware of the contribution they can make to coaching and developing their suppliers. Supplier development is more complex than realised and needs commitment to be successful.

Training and support for these new small businesses leaves a lot to be desired. Companies implement

But what if you use the wrong analogy? For instance, it’s tempting to tell our teams that ‘this business should run like a well-oiled machine!’ But what if a ‘well-oiled-machine’ does not allow for deviation, messy experimentation or disruptive innovation?

We could unwittingly programme ourselves and our keenest minds to buy into the wrong worldview, and consequently, the wrong behaviour. Our leadershippoetry could encourage automatons and discourage initiative. There must be a better analogy …

Setting the tone for agile innovators Many organisations today are actively seeking to disrupt their own industries. They are keen to become the mavericks, the rule-breakers, the radical innovators of their field. In my book They’re Your Rules, Break Them, I propose that innovative organisations might better use a military analogy, but a very specific one: that of a highly trained platoon moving through enemy territory …

Imagine a small, elite group of soldiers, locked in urban warfare in a dark and hostile city. Threats abound, but you must nevertheless make it through the alleyways and open streets, across the city squares and sometimes even through the sewers to get to the other side. You have high levels of technology, but they can’t save you in and of themselves. They only work as well as your team’s thinking works.

specialist silos that care only about their own unique needs and not about the mission – or in other words, when you use a different analogy and effectively dismantle your elite forces special unit – you are as good as dead in the water. Interdisciplinary teams can see each other’s needs and move in complementary ways. Separated silos cannot.

• The flow of information must go in all directions. The commander is in charge, but if one member of the team keeps a critical observation to himself, you’re all in trouble. Under pressure, the most junior member might see a safe way out, and to ignore him on the grounds of rank or hierarchy is short-sighted in the extreme.

• In addition to all this, you are in a war for hearts and minds. The support and buy-in of locals may save you. Their hostility may be your undoing. The behaviour of the unit in its various habitats creates or destroys this goodwill. And you can’t see or know in advance what your competition is planning until they roll it out. You must play the ‘what if?’ game and try to out-guess them.

• All the while, your competitors are also fighting the propaganda war, for the hearts and minds of the people all around you.

All of this is infinitely more dynamic than can be accommodated by the sorts of analogies we tend to use, which typically focus on ‘well-oiled machines’, or ‘us versus them’ sports scenarios. This analogy is political. It is strategic.

It is ever-changing according to a changing scenario. It is thus much more reflective of reality. Rigid rules can keep an existing system operating optimally. But they can’t accommodate the strange vicissitudes of change and disruption. And they tend to get in the way of innovation.

Having a plan for moving forward is non-negotiable

Be unpredictable This changes a number of specific things: • Training your special forces to the highest degree possible is imperative. But you also have to train them to be adaptive. You have to create a culture capable of learning on the go.

But you also have to factor in the notion that your plan cannot foresee the changes, surprises and gaps in knowledge that will inevitably derail any formula that is too rigid, and you must prepare in advance to be adaptable.

• Mission and vision will matter greatly, and the importance of crystal-clear goals will keep individuals operating as a team, moving in the same direction.

When they all know what the intention is, they can innovate and adapt on the move, without harming the desired goal. Alternatively, when you have

The analogy of the elite forces team on a special ops mission can go a long way toward overcoming rules-paralysis and actively encouraging a culture of continually adaptive excellence.

They’re your rules, and you can break them. But if you want to do so, you are going to have to win the war for hearts and minds within your own organisation. You are going to have to set talent free from mindless compliance and you are going to have to train and encourage adaptive excellence. Get it right, and you just might guide your platoon safely home.

Unsubscribe from commercial emails. Call the companies that send you catalogues and opt out of their mailings. Meet friends at the park rather than the mall. Block your favourite shopping websites using tools like https://freedom.to/.

• Buy items that fit your current system. You don’t have to start from scratch each time you buy

something new. When you purchase new clothes, look for items that work well with your current wardrobe. When you upgrade to new electronics, get compatible equipment so you can avoid buying new chargers, adapters or cables.

Cooling off period. Pause for thought before spending money. Online purchases, in particular, can be impulse buys. Add an item to your virtual shopping trolley, but wait 24 hours before returning to complete the purchase. This will allow you time to consider if you really need it.

Go one month without buying something new. Don’t allow yourself to buy any new items for one month. Instead of buying a new appliance, rent one from a neighbour or buy it second hand.

Let go of wanting things. There will never be a level where you will be done wanting things. There is always something to upgrade to. Realise that wanting is just an option your mind provides, not an order you have to follow.

Painter Mashudu Nevhutalu translates experiences into pulsating colours

What form of training have you received and how important do you think it is to seek training (in terms of learning first principles and refining technique)?

Mashudu Nevhutalu: I received my art training at the Tshwane University of Technology – I have a bachelor’s degree. It is important to get training, because apart from the aesthetic and the technical ability needed, which are often not always acquired only through formal training, training in this field also exposes you to various discourses in art history, changing your way of looking at things. It creates a shift from looking at things from one perspective to becoming more open-minded about the world.

What is your principal medium and why did you choose it?

Painting. I chose painting because I enjoy the process that goes with it. Being able to manipulate colour to develop a style and technique, whether realistic or expressive, fascinates me. I also love the emotion that can be communicated in a painting.

Describe the techniques you use most. How complicated are your methods, and why is each step necessary?

My work is generally stylised, with a vibrant colour palette. My method is more time-consuming than it is complicated, as it takes multiple layers to achieve the brightness I do in my work.

What technological tools do you use in your work?

In order to get the bright colours and stylisation in my work, I use programs like Photoshop and Illustrator to manipulate the photos I work with beforehand as a form of reference for my work.

Who is the single other artist whose style you most admire, and why?

Karin Preller is someone whose work I really admire.

It had taken me a while to realise why, but my work is

quite similar to hers in that we both work from old family photographs and our painting styles are somewhat similar. The only difference is that my works are quite vibrant in terms of my choice of colour.

Galleries and other traditional means are only one way of marketing art. What do you believe are the most important other routes, and what is the most important insight you have gained in that area in your career?

Social media and taking commissions are two excellent other ways of marketing your work and yourself as an artist. Commissions work in that they take your work to the general public, who often see art as something for the elite. Social media does the same too, and in this age of growing technology, where information travels from one part of the world to the other, your work gets seen by more people than work that is in a gallery.

Why do you create? What are your stated goals in producing art?

I create to show universal ideas and experiences in a positive light. My work is about nostalgia and I seek to re-live experiences we have all had, and hopefully as the viewer, you are overwhelmed with the emotions and the feelings of those experiences, as though they were all happening again, and had never faded from memory.

“With the ever-widening choice of frames available, it’s no longer a case of simply picking up a pair of glasses that kind of suit your face. With greater choice comes opportunity to make a more discerning decision on eyewear that enhances your appearance as well as meeting your lens prescription requirements,” says Ruahan Naude.

“Your prescription lenses are the most important consideration when choosing frames. The stronger your prescription, the heavier your lenses will feel as the day wears on. You want your frames to adequately support your lenses and ensure comfort. Your frames should fit properly, not only to be comfortable, but also to allow you to see through the lenses at the optical centre for optimal vision.”

Lenses can be made in aspheric or hi-index designs for more difficult prescriptions. These designs have a flatter curve and are slimmer, which makes it possible

for someone with a strong prescription to choose from a larger selection of frames. However, there are frames which are a no-no for certain lenses. For instance, thin or rimless frames may not be suitable for prescription lenses with powers less than +2.50, because the edge of the lens is the thinnest part and cannot be securely fitted into the frame.

Technicalities aside, eyewear should complement the wearer’s face shape and skin colouring.

Fit your face Oval – Choose frames that are as wide, or wider, than the broadest part of the face.

Oblong – Choose frames with more depth than width, that have decorative or contrasting temples adding width to the face, or a low bridge to shorten the nose.

Square – Choose narrow frames that have more width than depth to make a square face appear longer and to soften angles.

Round – Try more angular styles and frames that have more width than depth to lengthen the face.

Base-up triangle – Choose frames that are wider at the bottom and light in colour. Light materials and rimless styles will help minimise the perception of width at the top of the face.

Base-down triangle – Choose frames accentuated with colour or detailing on the top to create the perception of width at the top of the face.

Diamond – Choose frames that have detailing or distinctive brow lines, or try rimless frames or oval shapes.

Colour code When it comes to colour tones, skin, hair and eyes fall into two categories: cool or warm. Cool tones have blue or pink undertones, while warm tones have undertones of peach or yellow. Men with cool colour tones suit colours such as black, brown, blue-grey, jade, blue and darker tortoise. Men with warmer colour tones should consider frames in colours like camel, khaki, gold, copper, coral, off-white, fire red and warm blue.

The law chases the tech. The first autonomous motor vehicle fatality occurred in 2016, which sparked draft bills for autonomous and electric vehicle testing in Europe and the USA. Now, those bills will likely be fleshed out even further as legislation tries to catch up to technology.

In the local lane Vehicle sales recovering. After 18 months of negative numbers in SA, the new car market saw some improvement mid-2017. This uptick is likely to continue for the moment, with the huge proviso that the local political and economic environments are relatively stable.

• Dash cams are increasingly required for insurance claims Some manufacturers (notably Citroen with its Connected-CAM) are building them into their vehicles as standard on top-spec cars.

• Solar power from the windscreen This may be some way off, but the experts are working hard on it and the vision is that special car glass will enable the vehicle to be powered by the sun.

• Side panel batteries are becoming a real thing Researchers are testing polymer fibre and carbon resin door panels that could store power and be capable of fast recharge. This would significantly reduce the weight of the vehicle.

• Computer security features will become increasingly important Top-end cars are now sophisticated computer networks on wheels and manufacturers are using artificial intelligence to develop ‘live’ protection from hacking or viruses that could affect the vehicle’s security or performance.

Movement on the Right to Repair. The proposed New Code of Conduct, which seeks to provide consumers with the right to choose independent workshops and alternative parts without voiding their warranties, could lead to legislation. Should that happen, it will provide freedom of choice for consumers and, possibly, some reduction of cost, but it will also place some strain on dealerships and insurers, and will seriously compromise the vehicle manufacturers’ ability to preserve the technical and safety integrity of their products.

More shifting sands among brands. Chevrolet withdrew from SA during 2017, following Daihatsu and Citroen’s departure the year before, and SsangYong effectively paused their operations. But Opel decided to stay, with a new distribution and service arrangement, and two Chinese brands, BAIC and Haval, arrived. The local market probably has too many players for its scale, so some more changes can be anticipated. But they won’t all be negative – there’s talk of VW bringing the popular Skoda range into the country.

Consumers will continue trading in and up. According to the latest VPI by TransUnion, pre-owned car prices are climbing while new cars are priced below inflation for the first time in years. This will no doubt see many consumers ‘trading up’ – selling their current vehicle and taking advantage of competitively priced new cars, particularly since private vehicle sales are becoming more commonplace. Gumtree alone sees over 1.4 million South Africans browsing the pre-owned car section every month, while tens of thousands of pre-owned cars are listed for sale at any given time.

Be-gin again Drinks trend means both business opportunities and enjoyable taste adventures It’s the inspiration of many a famous author, filmmaker and songwriter, and often the tipple of choice of the rich and famous, plus those who’d quite like to be: gin.

Gin sales are consistently growing at almost 15% worldwide year on year, with tonic following suit with 12% growth

Winston Churchill famously said:“The gin and tonic has saved more Englishmen's lives, and minds, than all the doctors in the Empire.” However, gin and tonic wasn’t always the posh beverage for a day at the polo, or to be sipped at a yacht club on a hot summer’s day.

There’s a period in English history circa the 18th Century that’s now only whispered about: The Gin Craze. What started out as a medicine in mid-18th Century London became known as ‘Mother’s Ruin’ because it was cheap and, as described by writer and historian Patrick Dillon, “not even maternal instinct has survived the ravages of gin.”

It was produced on a massive scale, making it the chosen drink (although it was more of a drug of the time) of the poor and working classes. Until that point, beer was the most popular alcoholic drink in the country and it was significantly more expensive. It was also much weaker, meaning it did not hit drinkers quite as hard.

Ultimately, tax was raised by the government and gin sales predominantly moved to the underground black market. But it wasn’t until a grain shortage in 1757,

when distillation was banned, that the craze subsided.

For years after, gin lurked in the shadows as rum, vodka and whiskies gained in popularity. Now, fast forward almost 300 years, and the aromatic spirit is going through a global renaissance.

Distiller development South Africa too has well and truly embraced the trend, with more than 50 independent gin distillers in the country producing more than 75 local gin brands.

According to Avukile Mabombo, Group Marketing Manager for Protea Hotels by Marriott, gin sales are consistently growing at almost 15% worldwide year on year, with tonic following suit with 12% growth – more than any other mixer.“We’ve seen not only an increased demand for the classic G&T, but for many other gininspired cocktails,” says Mabombo.

Local brands like Inverroche, Jorgensens, Durban Dry, Ginologist, Hope on Hopkins, Woodstock Gin Co, Musgrave and Wilderer can be found on the shelves of bottle stores and bars across the country, joining international heavyweights like Hendricks, Beefeater, Bombay Sapphire and Tanqueray.

Khayelitsha-based couple Luvoyo and Nodumo Jongile recently launched their craft gin brand Mayine Premium Gin – the ‘first black-owned gin produced in Africa’. Their initial products, Rooibos Infused Mayine Gin and Grape Mayine Gin, are gaining popularity, and the couple already plans to expand with more flavours in the near future.

While you can get a G&T anywhere, dedicated gin menus can be found in the popular hotspots of major South African cities. Social on Main and Workshop 55 in Johannesburg, and Carbon Bistro in Pretoria, are just some examples.

Protea Hotel Fire & Ice! hotels in Cape Town, Pretoria and Johannesburg have long supported local gin brands on their menus and have launched new ‘Over the top gin and tonic’ menus to follow suit. In Umhlanga, Europa is serving up a delectable cherry and mint option, as well as a watermelon and basil one.

The general trend is to be adventurous when using gin as a cocktail base, with pairings of apples and cinnamon, blueberries and thyme, black pepper and rosemary, or jalapeno and lime.

If you’re planning on indulging in some G&T cocktails, the good news is that clear spirits are known to give a lesser hangover. Key ingredient juniper berries are a diuretic, however, so make sure to drink lots of water if you want to avoid a headache the next day.

Sip more slowly Understanding how alcohol units work can keep you healthier and safer In South Africa, the legal limit is a breath alcohol content of 0.24mg per 1,000mℓ, or a blood alcohol limit of 0.05g per 100mℓ. The South African government defines ‘moderate alcohol consumption’ as no more than two standard drinks – 340mℓ or a half quart of beer per day – for women and no more than three standard drinks per day for men.

The rule of thumb is a maximum of one unit of alcohol per hour, which constitutes 10mℓ of pure alcohol, based on an adult weighing 68kg. Our bodies can process only one unit of alcohol each hour. But be aware that if you weigh less than 68kg, your body will need more time to process the same amount of alcohol.

One unit is equal to two thirds of a beer or spirit cooler with 5% alcohol content. For those who drink wine, 75mℓ of red or white wine per hour with an alcohol

content of 12% to 14% is acceptable. Spirit drinkers can imbibe up to one 25mℓ tot of alcohol per hour (source: drinkaware.co.uk).

Alcohol content is also expressed as a percentage of the whole drink. Look on a can of beer or a bottle of wine and you'll see a percentage, followed by the abbreviation ‘ALC/VOL’ (alcohol by volume). Wine that says ‘13 ABV’ on its label contains 13% pure alcohol.

If you drink beer or wine at home, pour small amounts into your glass.

If you fill your glass to the rim, you'll drink more than you realise. Opt for a smaller glass.

Measure spirits, don’t pour them free-hand.

Pour your own drinks. If someone else is constantly topping up your glass, it's hard to keep track of how much you are drinking.

Drink spritzers or shandies. You will consume the same amount of liquid, but with less alcohol.

If you currently prefer higher strength lager, perhaps try a lower strength drink option.

Alternate alcoholic drinks with soft drinks, water or no-alcohol beers.

Pour your own drinks.

If someone else is constantly topping up your glass, it's hard to keep track of how much you are drinking

Try tracking your alcohol consumption each day.

Ask questions. How do the bar staff pour doubles or singles? How big are their large glasses?

Any quick-fix solutions to sober up, such as drinking coffee, taking a cold shower or drinking a litre of water before driving are myths.Your liver takes time to process the alcohol, so spreading out drinks is the only effective option.

The idea behind eating a meal before having a few drinks has to do with the fact that alcohol is mostly

absorbed only once it reaches the small intestine. If your stomach is full of food, alcohol is held up and takes longer to get into your system. Scientific studies have shown that eating food before you drink results in your blood alcohol level peaking at a lower value, meaning that you feel the effects of the alcohol to a lesser extent. So lining your stomach is a good idea, but still – be careful.

Boland Cellar – the Heart of the Winelands One of South Africa’s most popular cellars which also carries the name of the country’s leading wine region once again performed splendidly at last year’s Michelangelo International Wine and Spirits Awards.

oland Cellar, operated in Paarl in the shadow of the famous Paarl Rock saw two of its new star-performing wines shining brightly. A Gold medal went to Boland Cellar’s One Formation Pinotage Shiraz Grenache 2015, as well as to the quirky named Talent and Terroir Chenin Blanc 2017.

“The Boland Cellar team is immensely grateful and humble to be recognised at an acclaimed global competition such as the Michelangelo International Wine Awards, says Maraleze Knoetze, head of Sales and Marketing at Boland Cellar.

“We certainly also want to give our local community, partners and staff credit for their continued support, all fundamental to Boland Cellar’s ‘Pioneers of Collaboration’ ethos and the team’s work ethic”. Bernard Smuts, Boland Cellar winemaker, adds to Knoetze’s

comments and highlights that it’s thanks to the winemakers’ teamwork and attention to detail, from the vineyards to the bottle, that have been vital role-players in wines’ production and success.

“During the last few years, we wanted to focus closely on the One Formation and Talent & Terroir ranges, and to win an international award for what we set out to achieve is a great honour,” says Smuts.

The Boland Cellar team is extremely pleased by the showing of these new wines to its fold.

2015 One Formation Pinotage Shiraz Grenache The One Formation wine range aptly reflects the cellar’s key goals, to ‘collaborate’ and combine different elements – in this case, three varietals – to form a singular blend. The One Formation

series was inspired by experimenting with lesser-known varietals to result in a range of authentic regional blends. The 2015 Pinotage blend provides layers of dark, and ripe fruit, and has a juicy and approachable taste profile – all harmonising in a smooth, lingering taste. The Pinotage was cold-fermented and then blended with the Shiraz and Grenache to ensure the long, clean finish. The wine can be enjoyed with grilled beef rump or braised pork.

2017 Talent and Terroir Chenin blanc “Boland Cellar’s second gold medal winner, the 2017 Talent and Terroir Chenin blanc, certainly shows the winemaking team’s dedication to producing a great, signature wine”, says Smuts. “The 2017 vintage’s harvest comes from a very dry, yet cool season, which allowed us to create a versatile wine with beautiful tropical and litchi taste profile”.

Adding to the winning wines, is Boland Cellar’s newest release in the Talent and Terroir range, the 2017 Sauvignon Blanc, which took a silver medal.

Boland Cellar’s Success Driven by Teamwork and Collaboration Based in the beautiful town of Paarl, about 60 kms from Cape Town and at the very centre of the Boland Region in the Western Cape of South Africa, Boland Cellar has been a proud part of the South African wine industry for more than 75 years. What started as a small winery in the 1940’s when it received its first grapes from 18 members, it is now a company with around 80 contracted growers producing about 24,000 tons of grapes.

The contracted vineyards cover about 2,500 hectares in area from areas as disparate as Malmesbury, Durbanville and the Berg River Valley, covering five different climatic regions. This allows for regional expressions, a broader aspect of terroir and gives the dynamic and award-winning winemaking team opportunity to create wines of quality and character.

The Five Climates are: Paardeberg and its surrounds. Named Paardeberg [Horse Mountain] for the herds of zebra, which once roamed there. Source of some fine Chenin Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc, and also Shiraz.

The Drakenstein Mountain slopes, which dominate the surroundings of the Paarl area, provide decomposed granite soils that produce lower yields. Exposed to predominating winds.

Tough area in which to grow grapes, but the quality of grapes from this area is well documented.

The Berg River Valley that is made up mainly of alluvial soils provides fruity whites that are consistent year on year. And the Berg River that flows throughout the year provides irrigation water for the grape farmers.

The Swartland region which borders on the Paarl region - with aspects facing all points of the compass – with a variety of soil types, scarcity of water, creating lots of interest for the winemakers and wines of elegance from south-facing slopes.

The Coastal areas have the benefit of cooling breezes off the Benguela Current and mist at night which ameliorate the heat of the day and allow for longer hang time for the bunches and therefore greater colour and character in the resulting wines.

These different climatic regions not only give their name to a range of Boland Cellar Wines, but also provide the five white grape varieties used, namely Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Colombard and Viognier. The reds are Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Pinotage, Merlot and Mourvèdre.

Head of Marketing and Sales, Maraleze Knoetze, says that the One Formation brand is a highlight in celebrating the ‘pioneers of collaboration’ spirit that has been the cornerstone of this cellar’s legacy since 1941. “Our producer members, our staff, our national and international partners in the wine and other industries, all the consumers supporting us and the larger Boland community have all been working together to build our cellar’s inspiring legacy.”

When asked where the brand name originates from, Ms Knoetze explained that One Formation refers to different elements – in this case, three varietals – that were blended together to form one singular blend, hence ‘One Formation’.

She further elaborated: “After a trial period of two years, the One Formation blends celebrate the best that our area has become known for. Paarl is particularly renowned for varietals like Pinotage and Chenin Blanc, and they are the cornerstones of our blends.

Soil by Jamie Kornegay It’s desperately rare for the shoutline on a cover to accurately and concisely describe the tone and feel of a book.

However, in Soil’s case, ‘The Coen Brothers meets Crime And Punishment – with a Mississippi twist’ is about as appropriate as it’s possible to get. The combined claustrophobia, paranoia and fear and

loathing of those references pulses through this debut novel, propelled by Jamie Kornegay’s brisk, bristling prose.

The central narrative concerns Jay Mize, a thoughtful young farmer with an eye on the big picture and new techniques that will help humankind grow food sustainably. His unconventional ideas and unwillingness to follow the crowd place him under constant pressure, making his professional life and personal relationships almost untenable. For a man under such strain, the addition of an unexpected corpse to his situation all but pushes him over the edge. Kornegay sets his tale in the US’ small-town Deep

South alongside a river in flood – a place where anyone might suspect that at least some of the people and much of the environment would constitute a threat. He keeps his cast small, adding to the smothering tone, but also allowing readers to become intimate with all the characters and make their own (often confounded) predictions as to who might do what. He gives his creations a stab at redemption, but keeps it dangling just out of reach, meaning that readers’ emotions are likewise manipulated, though they will be happy to submit to such treatment to see how Mize navigates the awful mess he finds himself in. A story involving a perspective on the background to Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is always likely to be interesting.

Such a story written by the great-granddaughter of Alice Liddell, the little girl on whom the story was based, can hardly fail to deliver. The book is structured like Jane Austen’s romantic dramas, with similarly cutting observations about the pressures experienced by its characters. Charles Dodgson (aka Lewis Carroll) is portrayed as a genial eccentric, but there’s a sustained – though veiled – tone in the sections in which the older man deals directly with his young friends that will make readers feel a little uncomfortable.

Sleep Well Beast is nearly an hour of mostly introspective musical mumbling by the deep-voiced Matt Berninger, accompanied by backing that comprises as much electronica as it does guitars and drums. This is not much of a departure from the band’s usual modus operandi, but as their influence has grown, it’s possible that more is expected from them and this album is more a continuation of a theme – a feat in itself, mind – rather than growth into that expanded authority.

This is not a simple album to listen to and may inspire occasional ambivalence as well as appreciation.

Married couple Brian and Jenn Johnson are two of the leaders of the super-productive Bethel Music collective. They usually perform and record with their fellow worship leaders from the Bethel Church in Reading, California, but this outing sees just the two of them fronting a collection of 10 new songs. A serene, stringsoaked approach is maintained through the quality of the songwriting, the brilliance of the string arrangements and the considerable nous involved in combining them effectively.

Sonically, there’s plenty going on here, but the way the songs are structured speaks to listeners’ emotions, encouraging a meditative mindset.

Nobody’s Died Laughing: A Journey with Pieter-Dirk Uys (PG) Director Willem Oelofsen’s documentary about Pieter-Dirk Uys is a different beast to the comedian’s live sets. That makes sense, given that Uys is a very different sort of performer, with many decades of experience in not only comedy, but also activism, theatre, world-class political satire and much more besides. This gently persuasive visual biography features archive material, interactions with PieterDirk himself and a number of interviews with prominent talking heads including Charlize Theron, Eric Abraham, FW de Klerk, Desmond Tutu and Uys’ good friend Sofia Loren. This tribute is nothing less than a man of Uys’ calibre deserves.

Garlic mash • Cut the garlic cloves in half and place in the oven on a small roasting tray to roast until it is soft and it easily pops out of the skin. Mash and make into a paste.

• Throw roughly cut potatoes and sweet potatoes, with skin on, into a pot to boil.

• When potatoes are soft, drain and mash with a fork so it’s not too smooth; leave it chunky.

• Add butter, roasted garlic paste and season to taste.

Stout gravy sausage • Heat a pan, add the butter and oil and brown the sausages. Once browned, remove from the pan and set aside.

• To the same pan, add the finely chopped onion and thyme and fry in the sausage juices.

• Once onions are soft, deglaze the pan with the Castle Milk Stout. Add the sugar and stock and cook for 10 minutes.

• Add flour and butter to thicken, and season to taste.

• Add the sausages back to the pan and allow gravy to reduce – about 10 minutes.

• To serve, spoon the mash onto a plate, then the onion gravy and top with the sausages.

You are what you say – according to ‘that other guy’

In the aftermath of almost every breaking news story, there’s someone claiming that they were quoted ‘out of context’.

They may have a point, you know. Attributing words to someone who can’t possibly have said them or, more often, taking what they did say and writing it down and then passing them on incorrectly, is more or less a tradition, as everyone from Buddha to Albert Einstein has discovered.

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe actually said “God is in the details” – but The Other Guy is getting far more mileage out of the more common misquote. And while undeniably smart people, including Thomas Jefferson (“All tyranny needs to gain a foothold is for people of good conscience to remain silent”), Albert Camus (“There are causes worth dying for, but none worth killing for”) and Virginia Woolf (“You cannot find peace by avoiding life”), have had their names tacked on to thought-provoking soundbites on account of those truisms being the sort of thing observers might believe they would say, that’s more a comment on their characters than on their quotability.

Here’s the thing, though: the quotes and the character are linked and if you’ve been quoted in full, and have not been paraphrased, the follow-up defences of what you’ve said become less and less convincing.

This remains the case even when some of the context you had in mind but didn’t talk about is reasonable, such as when a politician praises another politician who is a decades-old ally, even if the second party’s current behaviour is abhorrent. The argument will be that the reader, listener or viewer should have taken a moment to consider the bigger picture before making a judgement call. The riposte will – or should – be that the reader, listener or viewer doesn’t have a fulltime team of handlers, researchers and scriptwriters on hand, and so could be considered slightly less culpable than a person who has a high-powered accountability filter.

For most of us, the stakes are not that high, and neither is the likelihood that our making a mistake might be instantly telegraphed to the entire planet.

But the ‘broken telephone’ concept plays out in every sphere of life, whether it’s a comment to a colleague that comes up again later or a chat over a drink with an old friend or what you meant as a joke to a toddler who then waddles off to their parent and repeats you verbatim.

Perhaps use that last one as your marker. After all, as the saying goes, “Out of the mouths of babes comes whatever they were chewing a couple of seconds ago.”
