Furniture design and construction provides an opportunity for my design work to be realized into built form. It’s also an opportunity to learn from working with raw material and construction detailing. While taking an idea, like “floating beds”, and having to design, detail, and construct it and have the project simultaneously, work structurally, and maintain the original conceived idea is a challenge. These challenges led to employing structural concepts like cantilever to effectively execute the design.

EXTRACTION OF 3:1 SITE

Given the complex surface, a measuring device needed to be created in order to accurately map the topography of the site and move forward with the design process. A crane like device with a measuring tape mounted exactly six inches off the ground was constructed and used to measure down to the model to find elevations at various points. After a grid system was applied to the model and elevations were found at the coordinates, traditional drafting techniques were used to create accurate drawings.
The landscape evolved as the built tectonic structures were worked to create balance with the stereotomic land forms. Once a sense of balance was created the design moved toward creating the occupiable space through a form that embodied both the sterotomic and tectonic principles.
The built tectonic structures were treated as a machine like system from the early stages of this design. The system at work here is one based on cantilever and suspension. The connection between the two needed to be designed as well.
