Road Steward’s Party - look out for details

AGM, Jubilee Party, a busy time for all... A lively and interesting AGM. The most important changes are the increase in subscriptions to £3.00, voted for by all with only two against. And very new - we will have a SKPPRA membership card. It will have your unique resident’s number and your Road Steward’s name on it. We will look into the possibility of obtaining discounts for SKPPRA members from local businesses. So watch this space... Jeanine Leon-Soon said that she was resigning from the committee. Chairman Michael Rushe made a special point of thanking Jeanine for her many years of service to the Association. Michael informed the residents that since September the new committee has been busy implementing many new ideas, memberships cards, road stewards’ consultation, development of our website, the jubilee party, to name but a few. (cont.page 8)

Thank you Jeanine for all your hard work for SKPPRA! For all the latest news visit www.skppra.co.uk

Preston Safer Neighbourhood Team

We meet quarterly to get updates. Sadly Sgt Mick How has moved on, but he has been replaced by Sgt Neil Mahaffey. We still have PC Paul McCauley and PCSO Michael Willcox on the team. PCSO Nicky will shortly be on maternity leave. PCSO Tom Houlihan became a fully fledged policeman and was posted to Tottenham. Please bear with the team as they are very overstretched and short-manned! At present, PCSO's are not being replaced and Brent has the greatest shortage of PCSO's. However, Boris Johnson has provided the funds to train up to 1,000 new PCSO's and we should get a new quota in Preston Ward. A lot of criminal activities have been addressed - cannabis farms in private houses, newly set up brothels, burglaries and muggings. We were reminded of the new "101" telephone number for non-emergencies and 999 for full emergencies. The SNT nos. (020 7213 1328 or 020 8721 2968) mainly take voice messages, but a member of the team will get back to you. Please remember during the summer months, especially if you're going away on holiday, to ensure you keep all windows shut (even small ones), cancel any milk or paper deliveries, put timer switches on a couple of lights and never leave keys visible whereby they can be "fished" out through your letterbox and let your neighbours know you're away. Jeanine The SKPPRA Accounts as presented at the AGM can now be viewed online at www.skppra.co.uk. However, if you do not have access to the website please contact me, Julia, on 020 8908 0094 and I will post the figures to you.

John Corner MBE 1924 - 2012 All who knew him were shocked to learn of the death of John Corner, the Founder Life President of St. Luke’s Hospice, on 21st February. John served as a navigator in the RAF in World War II, after which he joined United Dairies. He and his wife Irene moved to Windermere Avenue and quickly involved themselves in the local community. John played tennis and cricket in Preston Park, both joined the Church of The Annunciation, where John became a leader of the Youth Club and later treasurer. When Grand Met. Hotels absorbed United Dairies, John became Company Secretary and was well familiar with fund raising and cost control in big business. Then, at a time when he was beginning to face retirement, he was offered a new challenge. Anne Hatswell, a nurse and member of the Church, had observed with concern the plight of local people suffering terminal illness. Discussions with others in the parish had agreed the need for a local hospice. She enquired whether John would lead a campaign to secure such a unit. John agreed to the proposal, especially when it was found that at least two other groups in Harrow had similar views, and, at a meeting at Wealdstone Baptist Church, all the local service clubs, relevant charities and many individuals, gave their support. John presented a plan sponsoring McMillan nurses at first, followed by a day-care centre and as the funds accumulated, an in-bed hospice. He was greatly helped by the loan of a flat at St. Augustine’s Church as the initial head quarters for fund raising and strategy development. John was tireless in his efforts to put St. Luke’s Hospice at the centre of the community and with the generosity of the service clubs, the community at large and the talent of the Trustees whose Board John chaired, the objectives were achieved. Shortly after the Queen formally opened the Hospice at Kenton Grange in 2001, John was awarded the MBE. Afterwards, he stood down as Chairman of the Board of Trustees which immediately invited him to become Founder Life President. He accepted the invitation and continued to raise money for St. Luke’s and take an active part in the community through the Rotary Clubs, the Golf Clubs and his many social contacts. He will be remembered as one who truly made a difference to his community. Our sympathy goes to his wife, children and grand-children. Jim Perrin 4

To my dedicated Bottle Top Collectors

Unfortunately we have to make a few changes. I will keep it brief. My two contacts for passing on the plastic tops are no longer collecting and I have been unable to get the information about the final recipient from them. I have now located a company who will give us cash for specific Plastic Bottle Tops and we can then put the cash towards any charity we want to collect for. You no doubt know that there are a great variety of different plastic materials. Mixing different types of plastic reduces the value of the collection. To get the best price, we need those tops with a triangle symbol with either a 2 or a 4 (see above). If you look inside the plastic tops you can clearly see the triangle with the relevant numeral inside. Some are very tiny and difficult to see. I don’t want you to worry about any other tops unless you are going as “mad” as I am and try to read the very tiny figures (with a magnifying glass!) to identify the number inside the triangle. I am now looking through all the tops which you kindly sent me to ensure that they are all correct. I will not bother you with all the questions I have, but I think I will soon be able to write a dissertation about bottle tops!!! The receiving company is in Portsmouth and I am now trying to find a haulier who regulary goes to Portsmouth and who is willing to carry some bags - for charity and at no cost! If you happen to know a haulier, please let me know. In any case, see the next newsletter (or our website) for further news... Trixi

Hello Young SKPPRAs! Amy’s Mini Marathon

First the qualification, then the real thing. At the mini marathon Amy Merrigan came 3rd in Brent, 219th of all the London youngsters and 284th in the UK!! What a great achievement. The London Marathon took place on the 22nd April. I did not know that the youngsters, different age groups, boys or girls run the last 3 miles of the actual Marathon route. So all the excitement of arriving at the finishing line, all the spectators to cheers them on. We had a fabulous day. I hope that Amy is going to progress to greater things... I am pleased to report that Amy raised £300 for St. Luke’s!

Did you colour in your Jubilee Poster? When I printed the black and white posters it occurred to me that hand-colouring would be much nicer than colour printing. So three hours later Ellie Merrigan and I had created 20 individual posters. I have to admit, Ellie had many more fun ideas than I did. I hope that you, too, were able to print out the online poster and colour it in. Well, we had a great party and the posters certainly helped to get so many people to come. Trixi

And now something else – go on the SKPPRA website and find Amy’s Maze!!

Births Welcome to our latest resident, Aaron, born on 18th May 2012, brother to Dillan. Congratulations to the proud parents Sagar and Roopal Patel. Jeanine and Donald Leon Soon are delighted to tell us that their second grandchild Zak was born on 9th June 2012. Report cont. from page 1 The Warmhouse Project is now completed and the effects of the insulation are being monitored. The Editor explained that new advertisers are always sought. It is important that residents consider them when getting estimates. She asked residents report to her if they have received anything other than very good service. Our councillors are supporting our campaign for a one hour free parking in Preston Road. A resident asked about alleygating in Grasmere. Cllr Hussain said she had applied for funds. Another resident reported the accusation that bin men were asking for cash to empty overflowing bins. Cllr Harrison promised to look into it and report back to the resident.

Obituary - Keith Clark My mum (Sheila Clark) phoned you [Trixi] recently regarding the death of my father. As Mum explained, we were long standing residents who were very involved with the SKPPRA and the community generally over the many years of living in Carlton Avenue East. There are probably many neighbours/residents - near and far - who will remember us as a family. Sarah It is with regret that we report the death of former resident Keith Clark, who passed away on 29th April 2012 aged 76. Keith and wife Sheila moved to Carlton Avenue East in 1962 where they spent many happy years bringing up their two daughters, Jane and Sarah (both attended Preston Park School, with Sarah going on to Preston Manor). In 2008, after 46 years in CAE, Keith and Sheila moved to Bexley in Kent to be nearer their daughter Sarah; with health issues generally and Keith being diagnosed with dementia, Keith and Sheila knew that Sarah’s support would be needed in the future. Although his dementia had a lot to do with it, Keith never really felt Bexley was home; even in his last couple of months, when the Alzheimer’s had a major impact on him, he would still talk about going to Wembley and walking Cindy the dog in both Preston and Northwick Park.

A.R.Pendjiky 1927 - 2012 Ray Pendjiky spent most of his life in Windermere Avenue and died in April after a lengthy illness. His working life was in accountancy and shipping and on retirement, he became Treasurer of the Church of The Annunciation. Our sympathy goes to his wife Joan and daughter Jane. Jim Perrin

The Committee would like to thank all the sponsors who helped us promote our Jubilee Party and who donated prizes for our very Our successful raffle. Thank you to all the helpers who organised the children’s activities. Thank you to Jubilee everybody who bought raffle tickets and Party supported the stalls and the various activities.Thank you to the Windermere Pub who Sponsors not only gave us the free venue, they also paid for the Bouncy Castle, the Facepainting and the very entertaining Clown. And let’s not forget the Committee who arranged the beautiful weather! Our delighted Treasurer tells me that all the donations, raffle and other income not only paid for the party, but we even have £83.00 for SKPPRA’s funds. Noel’s BBQ in the evening raised a lot of money for St. Luke’s. We’ll let you know the exact amount on the website. Two good reasons for having an annual summer party, don’t you agree? Trixi
