Flood recovery proceeds nicely

ne of many notable properties that felt the effects e of the historic flood in 2008 was the National Na Czech and Slovak Museum & Library. Orig Originally built in 1994-95 it was constructed 1 at 60 16th Avenue SW. During spring and early summer of 2011 the entire 1,700 ton building was moved 480 feet to a new elevated foundation. The new location of the museum will be 11 feet higher than the first location.

preparations for the move it was discovered that the back of the building was 53 tons heavier than the front. Special steel beams were ordered from Florida and welded together onsite to accommodate the imbalance. With a total gross weight of over 3 million pounds the building weighs as much as 4 fully loaded 747 airplanes. Once raised to the new height a hydraulic machine moved the entire building at a rate of 10-12 feet every 2-2½ hours. When this move is finally complete it will hold a spot in history as the largest museum ever moved.

Preparation for the move began in April, 2011 and was expected to take 6-8 weeks. Persistent spring rains prevented the move from proceeding for several weeks. During early
