Cedar Rapids City Hall has opened On Monday, June 4, 2012, the former Federal Court House reopens as new Cedar Rapids City Hall 100 yards away from the original location in Veterans Memorial building on Mays Island.

Prior to the flood of 2008 Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Paris, France shared the distinction of being the only cities in the world that had their administrative offices on an island. Both cities have relocated their City Hall to new sites.

The fresh look of the new City Hall is one more compliment to the recovery process that is taking place in the city. Cedar Rapids is well on the way to becoming a stronger and more vibrant community going forward.

The building which now houses the Cedar Rapids City Hall has been a post office and a Federal Court House in years past. Approximately 120 city workers will move into the $10 million renovation in the Cedar Rapids Central Business District. The city acquired the former Federal Court House through a land swap with the Federal Government. Cedar Rapids spent $1.3 million to purchase land for the new Federal Court House plus an additional $745,000 to complete site preparation work for the new Federal Court House.
