Interstate contributes to Cedar Rapids growth he cover photo features a section of the A Avenue of the Saints/Interstate 380 taken from the Wilson Ave. overpass in Cedar Rapids. At this llocation I-380 did not exist in 1973. Since then avera daily traffic count has grown to 62,510 the average cars a dayy ((Friday’s average count is 78,803 cars a day). The 73-mile long I-380 was intended to connect Iowa’s 2nd and 5th largest cities (Cedar Rapids and Waterloo) to the interstate highway system at I-80. Construction began in the early 70s and finished about 12 years later. Construction on the section of I-380 shown on the cover began in 1973 at Wright Brothers Blvd. and would reach the west bank of the 1972 Cedar River about three years later. It would take another three years before the freeway would cross the river. In 1990, I-380 was selected as the middle section of the 560-mile long Avenue of the Saints which connects St. Louis, Mo. with St. Paul, Minn. The Avenue of the Saints corridor serves seven million people and 250,000 businesses.

This convenient connection to 1979 the National Interstate System has allowed commerce to move freely and conveniently to and from Cedar Rapids resulting in the city becoming: • the center of the American distribution network, • a quick and easy access to the Eastern Iowa Airport in Cedar Rapids, • a method for local business to move quickly around the city. The Avenue of the Saints and I-380 have been a huge boon to the growth of the Cedar Rapids area.
