Anatolian Kilims

The late Peter Davies was wellknown and well-respected for his deep knowledge and tireless promotion of antique flat woven rugs in modern interiors. What is less wellknown is his personal collection of early Anatolian kilims, most of them never published in his many books on flatweaves, and offered here for the first time. He understood, even as a beginning collector, that 18th and 19th century Anatolian kilims— with their brilliant dyes, their powerful reciprocal designs, and an aesthetic that is thousands of years old—are one of the world’s great art forms. opposite page: Lot 120 Konya Kilim, Turkey, late 18th century Lot 123 Yuncu Kilim, western Turkey, c. 1800 Lot 125 Konya Kilim, Turkey, early 29th century

Caucasian Rugs Like early Anatolian kilims, Caucasian village rugs from 1870 and earlier are often the repository of ancient design tradition. This was one of the primary qualities Jim Way and Ray Rosenberg sought in their 60 years of rug hunting: 19th century rugs with an archaic “feel” about them.

These rugs and carpets, primarily from The Sandra Whitman Collection, represent a lifetime of passionate collecting. Long before she became a highly regarded dealer in 17th, 18th, and early 19th century rugs, Sandra Whitman was a committed, discerning collector of them. Antique Chinese rugs, with their subdued but luminous colors and their simple yet sophisticated designs are, like the collector herself, engaged in the ongoing pursuit of the sublime.
