BLACK SWAN

HELMETED HONEYEATER

GANG-GANG COCKATOO

LAUGHING KOOKABURA

Considered as nomadic and monogamous, the black swan is widely referenced in Australian culture and has spiritual significance in the traditional histories of many Aboriginal people across southern Australia. A large waterbird, the black swan is the official state emblem of Western Australia and is depicted on its flag, as well as on the coat-of-arms. They were introduced as ornamental birds into Europe in the 1800s.

The Helmeted Honeyeater is a critically endangered yellow and black bird with a distinctive yellow ‘helmet’ that exists in the wild only as a tiny relict population in the Australian state of Victoria where the remaining 20 breeding pairs are all found. It is Victoria’s only endemic bird, and was adopted as Victoria’s bird emblem. Much work has been done to ensure their survival but they are at the brink of extinction with numbers not improving in recent times.

Found mostly in alpine regions of Australia, the gang-gang cockatoo is a relatively small cockatoo. A bird characterised by a grey body and contrasting red head seen exclusively on males. They have a call resembling a squeaky gate or the opening of a wine bottle. Considered as the most primitive example of cockatoos it is the bird emblem of the Australian Capital Territory. The name gang-gang comes from a Aboriginal language, possibly from Wiradjuri.

Also called laughing jackass, the laughing kookaburra is the largest member of the kingfisher family that is widely known for its call which resembles an echoing human laugh. A monogamous bird, they retain the same partner for life. Adapted well to live alongside humans in city parks and suburban gardens as well as dry eucalypt forests and woodlands, the name kookaburra comes from Wiradhuri, a traditional Aboriginal language. It is the bird emblem of New South Wales.

MELBS

TASMANIAN TIGER

SOUTHERN CROSS

BANKSIA

The small and lovable city of Melbourne is famous for its unpredictable weather, night-life, love of sport, street art, laneways, fine coffee, friendly and diverse people. Originally named Batmania, Melbourne has the largest tram network outside of Europe and highest number of restaurants per person. Commonly ranked the world’s most livable city, locals call their home town ‘Melbs’.

Not to be confused with its cousin the Tasmanian Devil, the Tasmanian Tiger was the largest carnivorous marsupial to survive into the modern age. They were known to hop short distances on their hind legs. The last surviving example died in a Hobart zoo in 1936, his name was Benjamin. Since then, there has been numerous unconfirmed sightings.

The Southern Cross or the Crux was considered as a footprint of a giant eagle by certain Aboriginal communities. Recognisable and memorable, it has served as a symbol of Australian life since the Eureka Rebellion in 1854 and continues to represent the spirit of modern Australia.

Named after the naturalist and botanist Sir Joseph Banks, Banksia is a genus of plants commonly found in certain regions of Australia. Defined by their ‘heads’ of tightly packed flowers, Banksia are rich in nectar and form a fundamental food source for native animals. Adapted to the harsh Australian climate, Banksia benefit from regular bushfires.
