Sketches Designs Ideas is an architectural design practice led by co-founders Earlwin Tee and Daniza Rutor. Our work focuses on architecture and interiors that cater to a range of typologies - residential, commercial, offices, transport, industrial, exhibition, and civic spaces. Through these projects, we get to work alongside collaborators both within the profession and those in related fields. Our practice strongly believes in the value of good design. A well-designed space that is carefully thought, aesthetically pleasing, and functionally appropriate uplifts the experience of its users. A contextually relevant design, reflective of its time and place is essential to having a positive effect on the natural and built environment. Through studies and thoughtful considerations, our work resolves on balancing programmatic requirements with solutions that can have a transformative effect on the users and context.

approach

“Architecture is not just for big star projects like museums. It’s for the slums around them too.” - Juan Ramon Adsuara In our local context, design is often perceived as an addon that can be omitted when resources are limited. A confined view of design places aesthetic value as of primary merit. We firmly believe that the opposite is true - design is necessary, as it is the foundation of meaningful and positive experiences. Well-designed spaces impart more than just visual appeal, they are defined by solutions and functions that resolve certain needs and constraints. They can have a lasting effect on their users through their interactions. It is in this understanding that we believe good design should be experienced by everyone. Inclusiveness is an aspect of design we hold in regard, adhering to the idea that ‘well-designed’ doesn’t necessarily equate to high costs. Both upscale and modest spaces can be an avenue for good design, given proper thought and understanding. We seek to achieve designs that can be experienced by most. It is vital that our work is comprehensible not only to those within the bounds of our profession, but to a wider range of users. Through our practice, we hope to communicate a better understanding of design and its value to every layperson.

The brief called for a redesign of the passenger terminal hall of a proposed transport terminal masterplan in Dagupan city, catering to buses, uv express, and taxis. Instead of thinking of it as a building, we approached it as if it were an open space instead. The pedestrian concourse is designed as a tropical-inspired, naturally-ventilated structure protected from elements, complete with landscaped seating areas to ease the experience of long waiting times and delays usually associated with transport terminals. Offices and service facilities are compressed into a single block, allowing us to achieve an expansive concourse flexible to different configurations per operational requirements. Work also includes improvements on the site development, and environmental graphics design such as wayfinding signages, bus bay indicators, and building identification.

AUI Office

location Binondo, Manila City size 362 sqm year 2018 status Completed collaborator Ar. Mikle Collado | Engr. Jeremy Lim client Asia United Insurance Inc.

An unfortunate fire incident left the company’s Binondo division without a functional office space, necessitating a relocation to a new office space within the area. A basic, no-frills approach was worked with the client, as the company needed to have an operating office as soon as possible. Open layout work spaces were optimized for practicality and efficiency, allowing natural light from the building perimeter to reach almost all of the work spaces.

In-line with the practices of their international counterparts, the local division of a movement systems company wants to develop a training center for its local workforce. This is also to house a showroom for customers to experience their products and know more about the brand and its history. A private institution is offering a portion of their building in Ortigas to be used for the facility, an 80’s brutalist-style building, currently functioning as a technical and vocational campus focusing on technology-related courses. This training center is to co-exist with the said building’s existing use. Our approach focuses on ‘highlighting the movement and flow of people’ through the building, integrating the circulation systems as key to the design. Aside from showcasing the company’s products in their everyday use, the design presents a dynamic facade through these ‘flow and movements’, a metaphor for the company’s mission and growth.

The company wanted to transfer their headquarters to a new location in a new business district as part of their operational improvement. Our idea takes inspiration from the brand itself, with the office conceptualized as an ‘office-in-a-bottle’, where the spaces are designed to be flexible, fluid, and free-flowing, similar to a liquid. Open-type work spaces with minimal partitions are utilized, improving workflow and adaptability to varying work setups for a dynamic work environment.

The project is a warehouse / office on a steeply sloping site for the logistics company of the client, with a separate residential component that his family can use on occassions. The site’s challenging topography was resolved by allocating the different project functions into the site’s different levels - warehouse at lowest level, office at mid level, and residence at the highest level. This allowed us to properly zone and segregate the different functions within the site while having minimal alterations to the natural topography. The project’s distinct challenge was worked around to be its defining idea.

Having experienced living for years in a narrow-plot residence that didn’t conform to local regulations’ setback requirements, a soon-to-retire couple wanted to have a new residence within the metro that adheres to prescribed local codes while still maximizing the available plot for the living areas. A simple solution having setbacks on 3 sides of the property allows natural light and ventilation to penetrate the interiors, a feature sorely lacking from the clients‘ previous residence. Open spaces on the front and sides are utilized as garden spaces that enhance the approach and experience within the interiors. A portion of the residence’s face along the road is designed as a blank wall, serving as a canvas to complement the existing tree at the front.

To be occupied by a soon-to-wed couple, the house is a previously-occupied townhouse unit in a gated subdivision. They request that the reconstruction work to be minimal, to save on costs and maximize what can still be retained. A back-to-basics approach was discussed with the couple, with the design taking inspiration from a modern scandinavian color palette, as they request to have a ‘mostly white’ interior. Original partitions between the kitchen and living areas were brought down to introduce a more informal and dynamic kitchen-living space relationship. Alterations to other existing walls and toilet locations were minimized, focusing instead on refinishing existing surfaces.

location San Fernando, La Union size 16,950 sqm year 2017 status Construction collaborator Idr. Michole Go | Ar. Gregorio Asi Irvine Construction Corp. client CSI Warehouse Club Inc. The project is the renovation of the facade and interior common areas of the shopping mall. One of the key considerations was how to update the mall to be in-line with modern standards, at the same time still exhibit a certain amount of character reflective of the local context. The proposed design dwells on the locality’s popularity for beaches and surfing activities through tropical-inspired elements. Punches of bold and vibrant color accents complement the mostly modern and neutral color palette of the interiors. A recurring theme throughout the design is the use of ‘wood-slat elements’, inspired by the locality’s rich industry of tigergrass aka ‘walis tingting’ products.

location Agoo, La Union size 5,300 sqm year 2018 status Design Development collaborator Idr. Michole Go | Ar. Mikle Collado Irvine Construction Corp. client CSI Warehouse Club Inc. The project is a two-storey commercial building in the town Agoo, in La Union, Philippines. It is a development by the CSI Group of Companies under their ‘warehouse club’ format - a series of mall developments housing their brands Supermarket, Hardware Plus, Appliance Center, Best Home, and Department Store. The facade loosely references the ‘bahay-na-bato’ structures within the area, taking off from the segmentation of the capiz windows and interpreting it with the brand’s ‘color strip’ motif. This nod balances with the brand’s identity of clean, fresh, and practical, being part of their continuing mall developments in the nearby region. The project aims to introduce locals to the conveniences of a modern lifestyle, in a scale that is contextually relevant.

The client wanted to update the image of the restaurant to be in-line with the times, to re-energize the storefront and be more attractive to mall goers. Taking advantage of the corner unit configuration, the design dedicates most of the frontage to the dining areas, allowing for a visually-porous and inviting space along the storefront. Traditional-inspired chinese latticework screens add rhythm and character to an otherwise non-descript frontage. An updated-feel is acheived through combination of simple yet texturally-rich finishes of wood, cement, and stone.

The existing space is a canteen/study hall for the students of the campus. The proponent wanted to renovate the facility at minimal cost as much as possible, with the special request of utilizing only painting works to ease workability. With these considerations, a graphic design solution is strategized as a way to practically enhance the space. Paint is used as the main medium, but in more playful and interesting ways than just covering on the walls. Vibrant-colored speech bubbles animate the surfaces, working around with the existing placement of windows and openings, thus requiring minimal demolition work. Wall surfaces are stripped to reveal their natural cement finish, conveying an industrial aesthetic consistent with the minimal treatment of the roof underside. The project limitations served as inspiration in the approach of maxiziming effect through minimal means.

The project is a two-storey dormitory on a 15x7m sloping plot in Benguet Province, Philippines. Adolescent students are the intended users, with the proponent requiring a practical and economical structure serving the basic accommodation requirements. A practical and no-frills approach defines the design, utilizing locally available materials and construction methodology. Materials such as cement blocks, corrugated sheet roofing, paint, and exposed downspouts are utilized not only as necessities, but are highlighted as aesthetic elements. Level difference is utilized by introducing a simple split-level configuration, with the steps doubling as informal seating areas encouraging interaction and spontaneity.
