Deng Thiak Adut In 1985, the Sudanese government began destroying villages leading to the rise of the People’s Liberation Army. Two years later, six-year-old Deng was taken from his family and conscripted into the army, getting shot in the back when he was still a boy. A chance meeting with his brother led to Deng being smuggled out of the country. The brothers came to Australia where Deng worked at a service station as well as enrolling in TAFE. In 2005, he started a law degree at UWS. He now works as a lawyer in Blacktown helping to support other Sudanese refugees. In 2017, Deng was awarded the NSW Australian of the Year.
By attending this event you are supporting the work of the St Kevin’s College Foundation. Our purpose is to raise funds for the school’s bursary program so that young men from different socio-economic and cultural backgrounds have the opportunity to attend St Kevin’s College and so families needing financial support may be assisted.
