To a friend’s house, the road is never long — Danish proverb
Everyone carries some familiar stereotypes of Scandinavia and its peoples – the dramatic nature, fairytale capitals and beautiful blonde inhabitants, the endless summers and white winters. The Scandinavian countries are consistently ranked as having the happiest peoples, with the best quality of life, the most liveable cities, and the best design. It’s an idealistic Valhalla that surprisingly few visit and experience. But what is it that makes Scandinavians so happy and successful? We think it is in their ability to create intimacy, fellowship and conviviality around the smallest everyday moments. The kind of moment borne from the region’s exposure to extended cold and darkness and the need for people to come together over centuries around a source of heat and light. But it’s the way they turn this rather functional need into an almost spiritual experience that sets Scandinavia apart - the magic of turning any situation into a moment of cosiness, especially those shared with friends and family around the illuminating glow of a flickering candle flame. To us, hygge represents Danish DNA and is the word that best captures this Scandinavian art. For the happiest nations on earth, joy is found in life’s small moments.

HELMIKUU
Happiness is a place between too little and too much — Finnish proverb
Humble but resolute, fiercely proud of their independent history, and divided by language from their Scandinavian neighbours. There is an old saying from our home country that states ‘Britain is with Europe, but not of it’, the same could be said for Finland and Scandinavia. So that’s why we approach Finland differently - by discovering beautiful words from the country’s past like lempi and koto, by working with a colour palette that is pure monochrome, and by creating fragrances with a touch of romance. But only a touch, as extravagance is considered inappropriate in a land where silence is treasured. Lempi is an old Finnish word for love. A ‘darling’ type of word from the days when love was shamelessly romantic while savoured in the black and white movies from the golden age of Finnish film-making. Our fragrance is a timeless blend of rose and strawberry, garden peony and oakmoss. For Valentine’s Day – Lempi.

MARS
It is always darkest before the dawn — Swedish proverb
Something happens in Scandinavia when the sun returns that has never ceased to surprise me. Even when snow is lingering on the ground and the temperature barely above zero, cafes start spilling out onto the street again, sunglasses are worn and lines of blanket-clad patrons face themselves toward the distant yellow light in the sky, warming their hands on their steaming coffees (who said you need handles on cups?) and recharging on vitamin D. After so many months of hibernation the physical human need for sun and the appreciation of daylight is universal. Welcome to optimism. For 2016 we celebrate the difference between dark and light, night and day, by introducing DAG and NAT as 190gr candles – welcoming our first transparent glass candle, as well as our subtle black-on-black design, to create an entirely new glow experience when lit.

APRIL
It is the great north wind that made the Vikings — Scandinavian proverb
I have been intrigued by Scandinavia ever since arriving 15 years ago. This is a region larger than Germany, France and Italy but with a tenth the population. It is a region forged by the ice age, surrounded by cold waters, bedecked with forests, blessed with endless archipelagos and home to over a million freshwater lakes. It’s a remote land where nature dominates and seasons dictate, with more boats and bicycles than those owning them, and a border to continental Europe just 60km long. Its influence on its inhabitants is absolute. Our NATURE miniset is designed to celebrate this outdoors and the Scandinavian oneness with their environment – from the fresh and bracing seas, to the spectacular fjords, to the countless islands scattered like stars across the still waters.

Fear less, hope more Eat less, chew more Whine less, breathe more Talk less, say more Hate less, love more And good things will be yours — Swedish proverb
Scandinavians treasure quiet moments like no one else on earth. Belief in living responsibly resulting in a modest but fulfilling life is ingrained. To find ro is the high point of this existence, a word used in Danish, Swedish and Norwegian to mean peace, calm and tranquility. A word representing almost a transcendental state of being, akin to meditation, that comforts Scandinavians with the belief they live in the best place on earth.

JUNI
A life without love is like a year without summer — Swedish proverb
Sankt Hans – a celebration of midsummer in Scandinavia that takes place with the lighting of bonfires on the beaches and waterways across the region. Midsummer is sacred in these parts, an event so important to Scandinavians it might just be bigger than Christmas. But the role of natural fire in Scandinavia is so much more than midsummer festivals. When in Stockholm our old wooden house had no central heating and was instead warmed by 3 beautiful vintage kakkelovns (wood-burning stoves). Each autumn I drove out to the forests of Dalarna to collect a trailer-full of wood that would last us for the winter. With typical Scandinavian efficiency just a small bundle of logs could keep a room or floor cosy for more than a day. Whether home indoors or in the great outdoors, the ashblanketed ember glow of the morning after reminds us of another great evening shared.
