During a recent brainstorming session here at Glow, the subject of curly hair came up—or, rather, the lack thereof on the red carpet. I listened in with wide eyes about our staffers’ exhaustive searches for photos of celebrities who regularly flaunt their coils at big events. Impossible, I thought. Until I got to my own desk and

searched for images that, I quickly realized, are none too common. It seems women with naturally curly hair straighten their strands into submission for the red carpet. As someone with pin-straight hair who immediately reaches for the curling iron for photo ops, the revelation was an eye-opener for sure. The folks at Dove must think so, too. Late last year the beauty brand known for exing its diverse beauty muscles launched (in partnership with Snaps) a set of 27 curly-hair-inspired emojis as part of the Love Your Curls campaign, which also includes Quench Absolute, a line of curlspecic products available in March. Scrolling through the #loveyourcurls hashtag on Twitter is just the kind of positive beauty messaging the world needs. Globally speaking, I think we can all agree that beauty is subjective. Who can forget Esther Honig’’s Before and After Photoshop project, where she famously morphed into 25 international beauty ideals in the blink of an eye? But when it’’s simplied, as in the case of hair (straight or curly), skin (light or dark), no makeup or lots of it, the fact remains that there’’s room for everyone when it comes to beauty. In case you hadn’’t guessed it yet, you’’ve arrived at our third global beauty issue. We love to celebrate beauty and diversity in every issue, but it’’s here where you’’ll nd special attention stories like ““The Shade Game,”” in which a writer confesses to nding foundation colours for her skin a challenge (page 32). We also thought it necessary to include a curl-focused feature in ““Curl Power”” on page 28 with (yes!) red carpet photos in tow (sure, it was challenging but not impossible). In keeping with inclusivity, we hone in on one of the most elusive yet much-debated beauty topics: red lipstick for everyone. On page 34, you’’ll nd four unique models who show us that red lips will always reign supreme. I was obsessed with the Beauty by the Numbers: “Party Tricks” article in your Winter 2016 issue. As a woman who is reaching a certain age, it’s comforting to have a magazine that recognizes that the makeup routines geared towards the younger generation don’t necessarily work for the rest of us. KARLIE KLOSS can code (see Kode with Karlie). She can bake (see Karlie’’s Kookies). She can vlog (see Klossy). And even though she’’s pretty ace at all of those things, Kloss is rst and foremost a model, and a pretty famous one at that. Whether your model knowledge is killer (you can name the supes in alphabetical order) or embarrassing (you keep confusing Gigi with that J.Lo movie Gigli), chances are you’’ve heard of Karlie Kloss. At the very least, you know that she’’s a six-foot-one model who’’s BFFs with Taylor Swift, with legs for days that you’’ve seen in magazines, on billboards or on television. So here’’s what you should also know about her: She’’s a catwalk veteran (having walked for everyone from Tommy Hilger to Tom Ford), a face of L’’Oréal Paris, a 34-time Vogue cover star and has starred in fashion campaigns for brands like Balmain, Joe Fresh and, most recently, TopShop. Though Kloss’’s main stomping ground is the runway, these days she’’s busy juggling modelling with a host of other things (see above) while also putting in hours as a student at New York University. Which is why it’’s surprising that the 23-year-old found time to land in Toronto last September during the Toronto International Film Festival (of which L’’Oréal Paris is a sponsor). Her trip was sandwiched between a shoot for Vogue in Nova Scotia and New York Fashion Week, where she walked for Diane von Furstenberg. She spent a full day of interviews dressed down in a white tee, leather skirt and brogues before slipping into heels and a slinky moss green Louis Vuitton number in the p.m. to kick off TIFF with a cocktail party hosted by L’’Oréal Paris, like the pro she is. It shows just how far Kloss has come from her humble beginnings (she was discovered at age 13 in her hometown of St. Louis, Mo., walking a charity fashion show). Even after that charity show became the Calvin Klein runway and Missouri turned into Milan, Kloss still acts like the girl next door. ““Eight years ago, I had this great opportunity to walk for Gucci in Milan and I’’d never been overseas before,”” says Kloss. ““My mom, who travelled a lot when she was my age, knew how valuable and wonderful that exposure, that experience can be, and what an education in its own right it really is. She was the one who really encouraged me to go for it and she was there with me every step of the way.”” And we know how that story goes. Kloss went on to become one of the most successful models in the world.

Here’’s another thing you should know about Kloss: She doesn’’t just want to be seen, she also wants to be heard. It says a lot about her and her career trajectory thus far. She became an entrepreneur in 2012 when she launched Karlie’’s Kookies, making glutenfree cookies with Momofuku Milk Bar, the proceeds of which provide meals for children through the organization FEED. Then she conquered YouTube by launching Klossy, a lifestyle channel documenting her life behind the scenes. ““I wanted to engage in the YouTube community,”” explains Kloss. ““Film is such a wonderful medium to be able to show and share what I felt like. Through Instagram, through a single image, I was able to express myself in a way that was more than I’’d ever had before, so I felt like taking that one step further and actually creating videos of my experiences, things and people that I feel so lucky to see and meet.”” Last fall, she enrolled in New York University and launched Kode with Karlie, a scholarship that encourages girls to study computer science, at Manhattan’’s Flatiron School. ““I’’m investing my time back into my own education. Over the past year or so, I’’ve spent a lot of time learning how to code. I think it’’s really important for me to help other young girls realize how powerful it is to be able to code and also just invest in your education as a whole. The sky is the limit with what you can do with it.”” All this and Kloss still hasn’’t shed the reputation she earned when she rst took the runway by storm, for being one of the friendliest models around. Case in point: When she’’s in Toronto, she steps out from the cocktail party at the Trump International Hotel to graciously take photos with fans, because that’’s just what nice girls do. ““There could be worse things than being known as the nice girl,”” she says.

Natural curls can be high-maintenance, but giving them proper TLC is the key to scoring beautiful locks at any age. BY MEGAN KIRKWOOD

IT’’S NO SECRET THAT WOMEN with curvaceous locks tend to think the grass is greener on the other side (straight hair that’’s silky-smooth and low-maintenance——what’’s not to love?). But the twists and turns of your curls make them unique, and more demanding than straight hair. Understanding your true texture and nding the right products can not only whip unruly coils into shape, it can also help you see the beauty of your curls in all their natural glory——without exhausting your styling tools. Here’’s how to get good curl and lust-worthy bounce.

ISSUE: Dryness THE STRUGGLE IS REAL: One of the biggest challenges for curly hair is its natural state of dehydration, which also means lack of shine and manageability. ““Since the physical structure of the coils can inhibit your hair’’s natural oil——also known as sebum——from migrating down the shaft of your hair, your ends can naturally look and feel drier,”” explains Dr. Rolanda Johnson Wilkerson, a senior scientist for Pantene. HOW TO DEAL: Any curly-haired girl knows that conditioner is a lifeline and goes together with shampoo like Matt Damon and Ben Afeck. ““You can even alternate between ‘‘cowashing,’’ which is washing hair with a conditioner only, and shampooing for better results,”” says celebrity hairstylist Ted Gibson, who works with Lupita Nyong’’o and Anne Hathaway. This will help maintain your hair’’s natural oils and add much-needed moisture. Once hair is dry, dene and polish your ends with a quarter-sized dollop of a moisturizing styling cream with curl-friendly ingredients like botanical oils and texturizing salt.

ISSUE: Breakage THE STRUGGLE IS REAL: Since the hair bends at each curl, breakage from friction easily occurs over time, compounded by years of combing and brushing. Your specic curl pattern also plays a role. ““Those of African descent can have the curliest hair pattern, which is characterized by varying degrees of curling, coiling and twists,”” says Johnson Wilkerson. ““Caucasian and Hispanic women can also have varying degrees of curl patterns, which can be more prone to tangling and broken hair bres.”” HOW TO DEAL: Protect your locks from friction-related damage by creating a smooth surface and a protective barrier with the help of a dry oil spray (it also boosts shine). Arming yourself with the right tools is key. Always use a wide-toothed comb or a hairbrush designed for wet hair to avoid tugging and snagging. For heat styling, Gibson recommends a ceramic atiron. ““They have even heat distribution, which means less potential to burn or damage your hair. Diffusers are great for women with very curly or textured hair because they lock in your curl pattern quickly and provide a voluminous boost with minimal heat exposure,”” he says.

ISSUE: Extreme frizz THE STRUGGLE IS REAL: Curly hair is more susceptible to extra static for two reasons: because of the naturally uplifted cuticles at each bend or turn of the curl; and because of years of breakage, which leads to split ends and baby hairs. And then there are external elements to contend with. “When moisture from the environment moves into the uplifted cuticles, hair can appear frizzier,� says Johnson Wilkerson. HOW TO DEAL: The most effective way to nix frizz is to keep your curls hydrated, which will make them as smooth and silky as possible. Enlist a moisturepacked daily conditioner (and a weekly conditioning mask), which will create a protective layer and prevent your hair cuticles from lifting up so much. One caveat: “Do not mistake butters or oils for moisturizers,� warns Gibson. “They only coat the hair and do not penetrate the hair shaft, so add water to your hair           

ISSUE: Unpredictable curls THE STRUGGLE IS REAL: As your hair ages, it can take on the characteristics of a tantrum-throwing toddler—cue erratic manageability, breakage and parched texture. “As part of the aging process, hair curvature can increase as it grows out of the follicle. Hence, as women mature, they may experience hair getting curlier,� says Johnson Wilkerson. Bottom line? Your hair-care regimen likely needs a reboot. HOW TO DEAL: Switch to colour-safe formulas with ingredients such as shea butter and argan and coconut oils to ensure aging curls stay soft and manageable. Johnson Wilkerson recommends products with fatty alcohols (cetearyl, cetyl and stearyl alcohols) or polymers, which can boost shine, strength and smoothness while reducing static. Take a gentle approach to styling, and go easy on the hot tools. “Be careful not to use too much heat on greying curls, as they are susceptible to breakage, and do a deep-conditioning treatment every week,� says Gibson.

BEAUTY CONFESSION Medium/Dark, which I use as a setting powder for a more glammedup face, or as a simple lit-from-within look in the summer months. Though I’’ve been lucky to nd foundations that both agree with my sensitive skin and blend seamlessly into my golden brown complexion, the question remains: Why is it still so hard for women like me to nd the perfect shade? The fact that I, someone whose skin isn’’t even that dark, am unable to nd shades that match isn’’t a good sign, especially when the few ranges that do have a multitude of brown hues (read: darker than a paper bag) are discontinued in brand revamps and disappear into the abyss. But to be fair, we’’ve come a long way. My mother, a former esthetician, can share many horror stories about the unatteringly bright white powder on the vintage puff she would use to combat oiliness. It’’s also great that more brands are being formulated for people of colour, such as Vasanti, a makeup line created by four South Asian-Canadian women. Still, I nd myself expecting more, especially from the big beauty brands. One of the companies trying to get it right is Estée Lauder, which has something called ““Color Capture,”” an ongoing initiative in which the product development team works with the scientists in research and development to identify a wide spectrum of skin tones for use in their colour cosmetics. Then there’’s L’’Oréal Paris, which launched the Women of Colour Lab in 2014, a space dedicated to creating makeup for women of colour. Balanda Atis, the chemist who spearheads the lab, explains that the process of formulating dark Amani Bin Shikhan’s fondness for shades isn’’t hard per se, but it requires more time and effort. ““What foundations has often felt like a one-sided works for fair skin won’’t necessarily work for medium or deeper skin love affair. Here’s what it was like on the tones,”” explains Atis. 1. TRAIN HARD My race was more challenging in the Caribbean heat than my cool runs at home were. Nike Run Club coach Inge Boerma says to prep with more intense training at home (read: longer distances), so your body is tough enough for the temp jump when you’’re away.

RUN FAR, FAR AWAY If the idea of another run on the same route induces a groan, it’s time to take it outside—of the country, that is. Here are three ways to make the most of your runcation.

WHAT IF I TOLD YOU THE NICEST HOLLYWOOD STAR was right next door? She is so polite and warm, you might even think she’’s Canadian, especially since she lives in Toronto with her two dogs, Bogart and Guy. But L.A.-born Meghan Markle, who plays Suits’’ Rachel Zane opposite adorable Mike Ross (portrayed by obvious Canadian Patrick J. Adams), is the real deal, offering up a generous handshake (with two hands!), uninching eye contact and frank answers to questions. Even her unassuming crisp white shirt and high-waisted ared jeans from Gap echo her easygoing nature. We meet moments before she speaks to a large roomful of youth workers and teachers about their roles in improving condence in young girls and boys for Dove’’s Self-Esteem Project. As a UN women’’s advocate, she tells me she knows all too well the issues young girls face. In the seventh grade, Markle remembers lling out a census form and facing boxes to check for her ethnicity as either black, white, Latino or Asian. ““There was no ‘‘mixed’’ box,”” says Markle, whose mother is African-American and father is Caucasian. ““I remember saying to the teacher, ‘‘Miss, I don’’t know which one to pick,’’ and she actually said, ‘‘Oh, Meghan, you look white, so just check white.’’ Can you imagine?”” That was just the beginning of dealing with others’’ preconceived ideas about her appearance. The actor, whose work can be seen in Horrible Bosses, Remember Me and Fringe, found herself being judged by her looks from the start of her career. (Hot enough? Cute enough? Girl-next-door enough?) ““When I was auditioning, it was so challenging because no matter what your sense of self is, you’’re constantly being dened. You always have to t a mould. But as women, we’’re multi-layered.”” Now, at 34, she takes criticism in stride. ““Many people will tell you you’’re beautiful, [but] there are just as many that will tell you they hate your face,”” she says with a laugh that implies she’’s told herself this before. She admits that the nasty comments on Instagram about her freckles and the terrible names she was called on Twitter when the ““Logan plot”” aired made her realize that people forget she’’s a real person, not Rachel on TV. Markle says to her followers, ““Please, only kindness welcomed here.”” ““I’’ve really started to learn that I have to remind myself of my own sense of worth outside of the character I play, outside of what people perceive me to be,”” she says, ““and that I am enough just as I am when I wake up in the morning with no makeup on, covered in dog hair.”” To do just that, she takes Moksha Yoga classes two to three days a week, goes running with her dogs, eats out with friends and writes about the things she loves on her lifestyle blog, thetig.com. As for ticking boxes, Markle stopped looking for a place to t in. That day in seventh grade, her father told her to make her own category. ““I don’’t t into those boxes and not only is it OK, it’’s awesome to be different,”” she says. ““And that reminder, I think, was one of the rst pieces of that puzzle for me.””

IF YOU’’VE SPENT many a night scrolling through your
