NORMADERM The anti-acne solution you’ve been waiting for. Dealing with a pimple now is like flashing back to sneaking in after curfew, except less fun. Problem is, it’s actually a very adult occurrence: frequent breakouts, dilated pores and acne marks. That’s because when sebum is over-produced, it clogs pores and leads to pimples. Don’t worry you’re not alone. The Normaderm Corrective Anti-Acne Treatment, thanks to salicylic acid, is clinically proven to help treat and prevent acne pimples. It also reduces the size of pores and controls shine. Plus, this new hydrating treatment, which now includes PhE-Resorcinol and exfoliating LHA, helps reduce the look of marks left by acne, while its Air Licium technology leaves skin fresh and matte. 1

Dove's curly-hairinspired emojis are part of its Love Your Curls campaign
During a recent brainstorming session here at Glow, the subject of curly hair came up—or, rather, the lack thereof on the red carpet. I listened in with wide eyes about our staffers’ exhaustive searches for photos of celebrities who regularly flaunt their coils at big events. Impossible, I thought. Until I got to my own desk and
This is me in Grade 7 with a perm—my third to be exact!
searched for images that, I quickly realized, are none too common. It seems women with naturally curly hair straighten their strands into submission for the red carpet. As someone with pin-straight hair who immediately reaches for the curling iron for photo ops, the revelation was an eye-opener for sure. The folks at Dove must think so, too. Late last year the beauty brand known for exing its diverse beauty muscles launched (in partnership with Snaps) a set of 27 curly-hair-inspired emojis as part of the Love Your Curls campaign, which also includes Quench Absolute, a line of curlspecic products available in March. Scrolling through the #loveyourcurls hashtag on Twitter is just the kind of positive beauty messaging the world needs. Globally speaking, I think we can all agree that beauty is subjective. Who can forget Esther Honig’s Before and After Photoshop project, where she famously morphed into 25 international beauty ideals in the blink of an eye? But when it’s simplied, as in the case of hair (straight or curly), skin (light or dark), no makeup or lots of it, the fact remains that there’s room for everyone when it comes to beauty. In case you hadn’t guessed it yet, you’ve arrived at our third global beauty issue. We love to celebrate beauty and diversity in every issue, but it’s here where you’ll nd special attention stories like “The Shade Game,” in which a writer confesses to nding foundation colours for her skin a challenge (page 32). We also thought it necessary to include a curl-focused feature in “Curl Power” on page 28 with (yes!) red carpet photos in tow (sure, it was challenging but not impossible). In keeping with inclusivity, we hone in on one of the most elusive yet much-debated beauty topics: red lipstick for everyone. On page 34, you’ll nd four unique models who show us that red lips will always reign supreme. And for those on the hunt for the best in international health trends, check out “We Dare You” on page 78 for some motivation. Join us as we celebrate all the faces and facets that beauty brings.
The global beauty picks I’m currently obsessed with.

I love Glow! I don’t really use makeup, but the tips for skin and hair are awesome. I especially liked “Meet Your Match,” about what colour of lipstick to use with different hair colours. I also love the samples of new fragrances—it took me a while to figure out why my magazine was smelling so good! And I’m thankful for the tips in “Frizz Begone” in Beauty Cheat. I’m totally excited for the next edition. Thank you! -Keyede, Calgary
I was obsessed with the Beauty by the Numbers: “Party Tricks” article in your Winter 2016 issue. As a woman who is reaching a certain age, it’s comforting to have a magazine that recognizes that the makeup routines geared towards the younger generation don’t necessarily work for the rest of us. I also love the fact that simple instructions for achieving the looks were included in the text. I find it so frustrating to look at pictures of all these beautifully done up women and wonder, “How on earth did she do that eyeliner?” Thanks for the refresher, Glow! – Kim, Toronto I understand wholeheartedly how the woman who wrote “Handle Holiday Stress Like a Boss” feels. The pressure to fulfill everyone’s expectations and pull off a flawless holiday isn’t easy. My social anxiety can make the holidays daunting. Therefore, I appreciate the statement “Admitting you can’t do it all isn’t defeat, it’s sanity saving” so much. Simplifying the holidays as much as possible can actually give you the time and energy to enjoy them. -Monique, Stoney Creek, Ont.
Tell us what you love about this issue of Glow, at firstname.lastname@example.org, for your chance to win a Clarins skincare prize package valued at $270.
I always love getting Glow in the mail. The makeup tips are great. I like reading about eyeliner brands and how to wear it on your eyes. I also learned a valuable tip from “Hollywood Life”: It’s not just about working out for an hour to gain benefits; it’s also what you do the rest of the day to transform your body, such as regular exercise, taking 10,000 steps per day, getting seven hours of sleep each night and other positive, healthy lifestyle choices. There’s great advice from celeb trainer Harley Pasternak in this article. -Maude, Truro, N.S.

The Skincare Expert StriVectin knows skincare (it’s rumoured that J.Lo’s a fan), so when we heard it was getting into the hair biz, we were all, where do we sign up? Powered with its signature anti-aging ingredient, NIA-114—a souped-up form of vitamin B3—the new hair-care line tackles signs of aging in the hair and scalp. The brand has three complete hair systems: Ultimate Restore, Max Volume and Color Care, each of which includes a sulfate-free shampoo, a conditioner and two targeted styling products. Our fave? The Max Volume Bodifying Radiance Serum, the shine- and volume-boosting wonder that has earned a spot in our routine. StriVectin Hair Max Volume Bodifying Radiance Serum, $35 The Supermodel Colour Whisperer Claudia Schiffer’s impossibly perfect axen strands have been coveted since the ’80s. hairspray, you don’t ask questions—you just nod and spritz. Pantene celeb stylist Kim Kimble is all over the new Pantene Air Spray, the rst alcohol-free aerosol hairspray that swaps ethanol (the alcohol part) for H2O. What you get is a softer, more touchable hold minus the dryness, stiffness and crunch, and a nice scent to boot. Kimble’s top tip? Don’t just spritz the top of your head (a halo of hairspray doesn’t look cute on anyone). Instead, “Lift the hair and spray it all the way through,” she suggests. “After it settles, take your ngers and run them through it …the product [is] distributed evenly and it gives it a little body.” If it works for Bey’s stylist, it works for us. KARLIE KLOSS can code (see Kode with Karlie). She can bake (see Karlie’s Kookies). She can vlog (see Klossy). And even though she’s pretty ace at all of those things, Kloss is rst and foremost a model, and a pretty famous one at that. Whether your model knowledge is killer (you can name the supes in alphabetical order) or embarrassing (you keep confusing Gigi with that J.Lo movie Gigli), chances are you’ve heard of Karlie Kloss. At the very least, you know that she’s a six-foot-one model who’s BFFs with Taylor Swift, with legs for days that you’ve seen in magazines, on billboards or on television. So here’s what you should also know about her: She’s a catwalk veteran (having walked for everyone from Tommy Hilger to Tom Ford), a face of L’Oréal Paris, a 34-time Vogue cover star and has starred in fashion campaigns for brands like Balmain, Joe Fresh and, most recently, TopShop. Though Kloss’s main stomping ground is the runway, these days she’s busy juggling modelling with a host of other things (see above) while also putting in hours as a student at New York University. Which is why it’s surprising that the 23-year-old found time to land in Toronto last September during the Toronto International Film Festival (of which L’Oréal Paris is a sponsor). Her trip was sandwiched between a shoot for Vogue in Nova Scotia and New York Fashion Week, where she walked for Diane von Furstenberg. She spent a full day of interviews dressed down in a white tee, leather skirt and brogues before slipping into heels and a slinky moss green Louis Vuitton number in the p.m. to kick off TIFF with a cocktail party hosted by L’Oréal Paris, like the pro she is. It shows just how far Kloss has come from her humble beginnings (she was discovered at age 13 in her hometown of St. Louis, Mo., walking a charity fashion show). Even after that charity show became the Calvin Klein runway and Missouri turned into Milan, Kloss still acts like the girl next door. “Eight years ago, I had this great opportunity to walk for Gucci in Milan and I’d never been overseas before,” says Kloss. “My mom, who travelled a lot when she was my age, knew how valuable and wonderful that exposure, that experience can be, and what an education in its own right it really is. She was the one who really encouraged me to go for it and she was there with me every step of the way.” And we know how that story goes. Kloss went on to become one of the most successful models in the world.
7. Her travel essentials. 8. Buying Powerball lottery tickets. 9. Baking Karlie’s Kookies at the Kommissary. 10. Striking a pose with Glow’s Mishal Cazmi.
Here’s another thing you should know about Kloss: She doesn’t just want to be seen, she also wants to be heard. It says a lot about her and her career trajectory thus far. She became an entrepreneur in 2012 when she launched Karlie’s Kookies, making glutenfree cookies with Momofuku Milk Bar, the proceeds of which provide meals for children through the organization FEED. Then she conquered YouTube by launching Klossy, a lifestyle channel documenting her life behind the scenes. “I wanted to engage in the YouTube community,” explains Kloss. “Film is such a wonderful medium to be able to show and share what I felt like. Through Instagram, through a single image, I was able to express myself in a way that was more than I’d ever had before, so I felt like taking that one step further and actually creating videos of my experiences, things and people that I feel so lucky to see and meet.” Last fall, she enrolled in New York University and launched Kode with Karlie, a scholarship that encourages girls to study computer science, at Manhattan’s Flatiron School. “I’m investing my time back into my own education. Over the past year or so, I’ve spent a lot of time learning how to code. I think it’s really important for me to help other young girls realize how powerful it is to be able to code and also just invest in your education as a whole. The sky is the limit with what you can do with it.” All this and Kloss still hasn’t shed the reputation she earned when she rst took the runway by storm, for being one of the friendliest models around. Case in point: When she’s in Toronto, she steps out from the cocktail party at the Trump International Hotel to graciously take photos with fans, because that’s just what nice girls do. “There could be worse things than being known as the nice girl,” she says.

A LIP BRUSH IS KEY. If you
want major denition, reach for a lip brush. It will give you a more precise line and especially comes in handy when manoeuvring around a smaller lip shape.
Not sure how bright you should go? You can’t go wrong with a hue that complements your complexion. “[If you have] a cooler skin tone, try a cool berry shade,” says Dzombeta. Warmer skin tones should try a yellowbased hue like coral.

HERE’S HOW STEP 1
Gently exfoliate lips with a lip scrub to ensure a smooth, even canvas. Apply a lip primer all over your lips and just outside your natural lip line to help achieve longwearing colour and prevent feathering.
Apply a lipliner that matches your lipstick all around the outer edge of your mouth. For extra staying power, fill in your lips with the liner.
SAVE THE SMOKY EYE FOR ANOTHER DAY. “If
you’re going to have your lips as the focal point, then go softer everywhere else,” says Dzombeta. She recommends pairing a bold pout with a dened brow and neutral eyeshadow instead. Rodial Lip Scrub, $30 (available at beautyBOUTIQUE.ca) 26 GLOW APRIL 2016

GO MATTE OR GO HOME.
For fade-free colour all day, stick to a matte nish. “Anything creamy is going to come right off.” Keep your lips from drying out with formulas that contain moisturizing ingredients like vitamin E.
Use your matte lipstick straight from the tube for even colour, layering it over the liner and keeping it as precise as possible.

Natural curls can be high-maintenance, but giving them proper TLC is the key to scoring beautiful locks at any age. BY MEGAN KIRKWOOD
IT’S NO SECRET THAT WOMEN with curvaceous locks tend to think the grass is greener on the other side (straight hair that’s silky-smooth and low-maintenance—what’s not to love?). But the twists and turns of your curls make them unique, and more demanding than straight hair. Understanding your true texture and nding the right products can not only whip unruly coils into shape, it can also help you see the beauty of your curls in all their natural glory—without exhausting your styling tools. Here’s how to get good curl and lust-worthy bounce.
20s 30s KERRY WASHINGTON
ISSUE: Dryness THE STRUGGLE IS REAL: One of the biggest challenges for curly hair is its natural state of dehydration, which also means lack of shine and manageability. “Since the physical structure of the coils can inhibit your hair’s natural oil—also known as sebum—from migrating down the shaft of your hair, your ends can naturally look and feel drier,” explains Dr. Rolanda Johnson Wilkerson, a senior scientist for Pantene. HOW TO DEAL: Any curly-haired girl knows that conditioner is a lifeline and goes together with shampoo like Matt Damon and Ben Afeck. “You can even alternate between ‘cowashing,’ which is washing hair with a conditioner only, and shampooing for better results,” says celebrity hairstylist Ted Gibson, who works with Lupita Nyong’o and Anne Hathaway. This will help maintain your hair’s natural oils and add much-needed moisture. Once hair is dry, dene and polish your ends with a quarter-sized dollop of a moisturizing styling cream with curl-friendly ingredients like botanical oils and texturizing salt.
ISSUE: Breakage THE STRUGGLE IS REAL: Since the hair bends at each curl, breakage from friction easily occurs over time, compounded by years of combing and brushing. Your specic curl pattern also plays a role. “Those of African descent can have the curliest hair pattern, which is characterized by varying degrees of curling, coiling and twists,” says Johnson Wilkerson. “Caucasian and Hispanic women can also have varying degrees of curl patterns, which can be more prone to tangling and broken hair bres.” HOW TO DEAL: Protect your locks from friction-related damage by creating a smooth surface and a protective barrier with the help of a dry oil spray (it also boosts shine). Arming yourself with the right tools is key. Always use a wide-toothed comb or a hairbrush designed for wet hair to avoid tugging and snagging. For heat styling, Gibson recommends a ceramic atiron. “They have even heat distribution, which means less potential to burn or damage your hair. Diffusers are great for women with very curly or textured hair because they lock in your curl pattern quickly and provide a voluminous boost with minimal heat exposure,” he says.

ISSUE: Extreme frizz THE STRUGGLE IS REAL: Curly hair is more susceptible to extra static for two reasons: because of the naturally uplifted cuticles at each bend or turn of the curl; and because of years of breakage, which leads to split ends and baby hairs. And then there are external elements to contend with. “When moisture from the environment moves into the uplifted cuticles, hair can appear frizzier, says Johnson Wilkerson. HOW TO DEAL: The most effective way to nix frizz is to keep your curls hydrated, which will make them as smooth and silky as possible. Enlist a moisturepacked daily conditioner (and a weekly conditioning mask), which will create a protective layer and prevent your hair cuticles from lifting up so much. One caveat: “Do not mistake butters or oils for moisturizers, warns Gibson. “They only coat the hair and do not penetrate the hair shaft, so add water to your hair
ISSUE: Unpredictable curls THE STRUGGLE IS REAL: As your hair ages, it can take on the characteristics of a tantrum-throwing toddler—cue erratic manageability, breakage and parched texture. “As part of the aging process, hair curvature can increase as it grows out of the follicle. Hence, as women mature, they may experience hair getting curlier, says Johnson Wilkerson. Bottom line? Your hair-care regimen likely needs a reboot. HOW TO DEAL: Switch to colour-safe formulas with ingredients such as shea butter and argan and coconut oils to ensure aging curls stay soft and manageable. Johnson Wilkerson recommends products with fatty alcohols (cetearyl, cetyl and stearyl alcohols) or polymers, which can boost shine, strength and smoothness while reducing static. Take a gentle approach to styling, and go easy on the hot tools. “Be careful not to use too much heat on greying curls, as they are susceptible to breakage, and do a deep-conditioning treatment every week, says Gibson.

ASK A BEAUTY EXPERT
Q: How can I protect my hair against heat styling tools? A: The key is using a product that’s specifically designed to protect strands against heat, says Sasha McKay, a cosmetics manager at Shoppers Drug Mart in Brampton, Ont. “Always apply the product right before you use the styling tool. Apply on damp hair if you’re using a blow-dryer and on dry hair when using a flat or curling iron.â€? BEAUTY CONFESSION Medium/Dark, which I use as a setting powder for a more glammedup face, or as a simple lit-from-within look in the summer months. Though I’ve been lucky to nd foundations that both agree with my sensitive skin and blend seamlessly into my golden brown complexion, the question remains: Why is it still so hard for women like me to nd the perfect shade? The fact that I, someone whose skin isn’t even that dark, am unable to nd shades that match isn’t a good sign, especially when the few ranges that do have a multitude of brown hues (read: darker than a paper bag) are discontinued in brand revamps and disappear into the abyss. But to be fair, we’ve come a long way. My mother, a former esthetician, can share many horror stories about the unatteringly bright white powder on the vintage puff she would use to combat oiliness. It’s also great that more brands are being formulated for people of colour, such as Vasanti, a makeup line created by four South Asian-Canadian women. Still, I nd myself expecting more, especially from the big beauty brands. One of the companies trying to get it right is Estée Lauder, which has something called “Color Capture,” an ongoing initiative in which the product development team works with the scientists in research and development to identify a wide spectrum of skin tones for use in their colour cosmetics. Then there’s L’Oréal Paris, which launched the Women of Colour Lab in 2014, a space dedicated to creating makeup for women of colour. Balanda Atis, the chemist who spearheads the lab, explains that the process of formulating dark Amani Bin Shikhan’s fondness for shades isn’t hard per se, but it requires more time and effort. “What foundations has often felt like a one-sided works for fair skin won’t necessarily work for medium or deeper skin love affair. The ponytail? So 2015. This season was all about the twist. Inspired by ’80s R&B singer Sade, hair was prepped with sculpting cream, then twisted into a tight braid at Céline. J.W. LOOKING TO LIVEN UP YOUR FITNESS REGIME? WHY NOT TAKE A RUNCATION? WHILE YOU’RE AT IT, GET INSPIRED BY SOME OF THE BIGGEST GLOBAL HEALTH T RENDS AND SO MUCH MORE. —Lisa Hannam
DESTINATION RACES are a thing. That’s what I told myself on a plane last winter when I headed to the Barbados Marathon Weekend (runbarbados. org). It ended up being the most beautiful 5K I ever ran. It was still a holiday, thanks to the picturesque Crane resort—which was the perfect post-race reward. (If you’re in Barbados, you must also visit Cutters for the rum punch and Daphne’s beachfront restaurant, where you may run into RiRi.) Inspired to bring your runners on your next vacay? Here’s how to elevate your runcation experience:
1. TRAIN HARD My race was more challenging in the Caribbean heat than my cool runs at home were. Nike Run Club coach Inge Boerma says to prep with more intense training at home (read: longer distances), so your body is tough enough for the temp jump when you’re away.
RUN FAR, FAR AWAY If the idea of another run on the same route induces a groan, it’s time to take it outside—of the country, that is. Here are three ways to make the most of your runcation.
2. CHOOSE A FUN RACE AND DESTINATION Check out the race route for tourist sights, and see if you can opt for a package deal that will help you create an itinerary of what to do on your non-running “rest” days. To nd out about the atmosphere, click on the run’s hashtag to see real-people pics.
3. PACK SMART Don’t try new gear or products on race day. “Stick with what you know,” says Boerma. Karen Kwan, of healthandswellness.com, packs a body balm, waterresistant sunscreen, sunglasses, facial wipes, kinesiology tape, electrolytes and joint-relief supplements in her carry-on.

Before launching the line in 2005, the über-fit Behnke was a nurse. During her first pregnancy, at 40, she read the labels on skincare products and thought to herself, “I can do better.”

Go ahead and be crabby. This total-body move, known as the crab walk, has you strutting in a whole new way—face up, on your hands and feet. Think of it as functional training mixed with dynamic conditioning, using multiple joints and muscles (from your forearms to your core to your calves) to challenge them in a way that traditional exercises like dumbbell curls don’t. “The trend is to train with full-body movements, like a crab walk across the floor,” says Carlo Jaramillo, fitness director at the One & Only Palmilla resort in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, which hosts A-list guests like Jennifer Aniston and Diane Kruger. He says his L.A. clients love how amazing they look in backless gowns and tops because of the crab walk move.

Osteoporosis is a serious condition, but you have the ability to do your best to prevent it. Here’s how.
5 WAYS TO LOWER YOUR RISK CALCIUM Life Brand Calcium Carbonate*
4 FACTS ABOUT BONE HEALTH & PREVENTION PROTEIN
VITAMIN D Life Brand Vitamin D3*
“Women start to lose bone tissue as early as 30, which is why it’s important to talk about preventative strategies early, says Maria Nenadovich, a Shoppers Drug Mart Pharmacist-Owner in Toronto. Consider these five ways to lower your risk: 1. Calcium helps strengthen bone cells. 2. Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium. 3. Protein, meat and alternatives, helps build and repair muscle tissue, which supports bones. 4. Exercise strengthens bones but also improves mobility, which prevents falls. 5. A balanced diet ensures your body gets the nutrients it needs to stay healthy and strong. Also, keep bad habits in check: “Any amount of smoking can weaken bones, she says. “Alcohol and caffeine in excess, according to multiple studies, can affect calcium absorption. For help with getting enough of these bone- and muscle-building nutrients, ask your Pharmacist for a Patient Information Sheet about bone health. *

What’s the difference between painkillers?
THE PHARMACIST SAYS: “Essentially, there are three types. Painkillers (acetaminophen, like Tylenol) stop pain messages in the body, and work well for sudden soreness, like headaches. Anti-inammatories (ibuprofen and naproxen, like Advil) take away swelling so you don’t feel the inammation. These work for tension headaches as well as muscle and joint soreness. And muscle relaxers stop aches by calming muscle spasms and cramps, and are commonly used for back and neck pain. You can also get relief from topical creams, which often use menthol and camphor to soothe you. And there are also naturopathic and homeopathic balms.” —Melissa Conte, Shoppers Drug Mart pharmacist in Toronto APRIL 2016 GLOW 73

But L.A.-born Meghan Markle, who plays Suits’ Rachel Zane opposite adorable Mike Ross (portrayed by obvious Canadian Patrick J. Adams), is the real deal, offering up a generous handshake (with two hands!), uninching eye contact and frank answers to questions. Even her unassuming crisp white shirt and high-waisted ared jeans from Gap echo her easygoing nature. We meet moments before she speaks to a large roomful of youth workers and teachers about their roles in improving condence in young girls and boys for Dove’s Self-Esteem Project. As a UN women’s advocate, she tells me she knows all too well the issues young girls face. In the seventh grade, Markle remembers lling out a census form and facing boxes to check for her ethnicity as either black, white, Latino or Asian. “There was no ‘mixed’ box,” says Markle, whose mother is African-American and father is Caucasian. “I remember saying to the teacher, ‘Miss, I don’t know which one to pick,’ and she actually said, ‘Oh, Meghan, you look white, so just check white.’ Can you imagine?” That was just the beginning of dealing with others’ preconceived ideas about her appearance. The actor, whose work can be seen in Horrible Bosses, Remember Me and Fringe, found herself being judged by her looks from the start of her career. (Hot enough? Cute enough? Girl-next-door enough?) “When I was auditioning, it was so challenging because no matter what your sense of self is, you’re constantly being dened. You always have to t a mould. But as women, we’re multi-layered.” Now, at 34, she takes criticism in stride. “Many people will tell you you’re beautiful, [but] there are just as many that will tell you they hate your face,” she says with a laugh that implies she’s told herself this before. She admits that the nasty comments on Instagram about her freckles and the terrible names she was called on Twitter when the “Logan plot” aired made her realize that people forget she’s a real person, not Rachel on TV. Markle says to her followers, “Please, only kindness welcomed here.” “I’ve really started to learn that I have to remind myself of my own sense of worth outside of the character I play, outside of what people perceive me to be,” she says, “and that I am enough just as I am when I wake up in the morning with no makeup on, covered in dog hair.” To do just that, she takes Moksha Yoga classes two to three days a week, goes running with her dogs, eats out with friends and writes about the things she loves on her lifestyle blog, thetig.com. As for ticking boxes, Markle stopped looking for a place to t in. That day in seventh grade, her father told her to make her own category. “I don’t t into those boxes and not only is it OK, it’s awesome to be different,” she says. “And that reminder, I think, was one of the rst pieces of that puzzle for me.”

WE WE’RE NOT GOING to insult your intelligence by telling you health news that you already know about—sitting all day is bad, fats are good, just eat clean already. Been there, done that. Instead, we’re thinking outside the box, beyond our borders and away from your normal routine. You may raise your perfectly shaped brow at some of these international trends, but trust us, these tried-and-true health strategies are worth considering. GO ON A MICROVACATION… LIKE TODAY.
Just like it sounds, a microvacation is a short trip that will keep you local. Pitch a tent in your yard, climb a neighbourhood hill or take a quick drive out of town to sleep under the stars. Alastair Humphreys, the British adventurer and author of Microadventures: Local Discoveries for Great Escapes, who coined the term “microvacation,” sees this type of tourism as a way to squeeze excitement into your life. 78 GLOW APRIL 2016

TAKE IT FROM The Swedes. They have informally allowed roaming on public and private land for centuries, and in 1994 it became law. Anyone can trek, bike, ski or set up camp for a night or two anywhere they please, as long as they tidy up. THE X-FACTOR Drop everything for these short, intense vacays, and pack minimally. The whole point is to be spontaneous, cheap and cheerful. Although these trips are quick, “you’ll be rewarded with all the fun, excitement and benets an adventure can bring,” says Humphreys. STILL NOT CONVINCED? The idea, he says, is to reprogram how you think about your day. Instead of being preoccupied with the nine to ve, ip the script and explore where you live with your bae with a mid-week microvacation between 5 p.m. and 9 a.m. Do some research, as trespassing laws differ across the country, and nd a safe area. to break.” Although osteoporosis usually happens later in life, it is possible to have it in your 20s or 30s because of irregular or missed periods (which hamper estrogen support), some meds and medical conditions as well as eating disorders. Bone mass begins to decline in our 30s, and Jiwa advises combatting that by taking 1,000 mg of calcium (ideally from foods like milk, yogurt and spinach) and 400 to 1,000 IU of vitamin D supplements daily. Every week, make sure you do strength training at least twice and two and a half hours of cardio.
THE DEAL PMS THAT’S GONE A LITTLE CUCKOO Has your PMS become intolerable? “Begin by balancing hormones with tactics like eating a healthy diet, getting enough sleep, exercising regularly and managing stress,” says Dr. Esther Konigsberg, who integrates conventional and alternative therapies at her Toronto practice. Konigsberg also suggests keeping excess estrogen levels in check by taking chaste tree extract and eating organic produce free of hormone-disrupting pesticides. If PMS begins to affect your work life and relationships, your doctor can help with options like a low-dose birth control pill or an anti-depressant. THE DEAL A QUIET DECLINE IN BONE MASS We don’t ever talk about bone health, until it’s an issue. But Dr. Famida Jiwa, president of Osteoporosis Canada, says: “The only sign of osteoporosis is a fragility fracture that results from a fall that would not cause a healthy bone
DON’T BE SILENT 80 GLOW APRIL 2016
THE DEAL A SMELL DOWN THERE Hygiene and choice knickers can help. “Wear natural bres [like breathable cotton], so you don’t end up accumulating moisture which is when yeast likes to grow,” Konigsberg says. If you nd the smell disturbing, see a doctor. A shy odour along with a grey, frothy discharge likely means gardnerella, an infection that’s treated with antibiotics. Forgetting to remove a tampon also causes a strong scent, but taking it out eliminates the smell. STDs, she says, “don’t necessarily have an odour. A yellowgreen discharge can be gonorrhea.” And according to Konigsberg, Schumer was right: Discharge and mild odour are normal. So don’t get your knickers in a knot.
Just because osteoporosis is a silent disease, it doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be talking about it. That’s why the Shoppers LOVE. YOU. program has partnered with Osteoporosis Canada. Talk to your pharmacist today to find out how you can slow the progression of the loss of bone mass with medication, vitamin supplementation and lifestyle changes. DURING AMY SCHUMER’S 2015 HBO special Live at the Apollo, the saucy feminist comedian aired our dirty laundry—literally—when she said a girl can always tell clean from day-old skivvies with one quick sniff. The audience laughed in acknowledgement, and suddenly it felt OK to have odiferous lady bits. Inspired by Schumer’s brand of oddly comforting tell-all bravado, here’s the straight talk on other bodily hiccups, so you can feel at ease with them.
THE DEAL ACCIDENTALLY PEEING WHEN YOU RUN, LAUGH OR COUGH Dr. Dean Elterman, a urologist with the University Health Network in Toronto, says that, although multiple pregnancies may increase the risk of incontinence, vigorous activities such as horseback riding or Zumba can cause an “accident” whether you’re a mom or not. Treatments include pads, surgery and pelvic physiotherapy like Kegel exercises. You can also help prevent leaks by losing weight (which reduces pressure on your bladder) and quitting smoking (which means less chronic coughing). Elterman also recommends Poise Impressa, which is inserted like a tampon but has soft silicone prongs to support the urethra and reduce leaks.
THE SLIMMING EFFECT OF STABLE BLOOD SUGAR LEVELS The link between sugar consumption and increased body fat has long been known. Too much sugar in the diet promotes more insulin, the fat storing hormone, and thus more body fat.
ecently an Italian study of a sugar-blocking supplement showed impressive weight loss results.1 e supplement, called ZuccarinTM, produced on average 20 pounds of weight loss, in only 90 days.
e subjects lost 10% of their body weight and lost 3 times the weight of the control group, who were on a controlled diet, but without a mulberry supplement. In addition, the subjects also experienced healthier blood sugar levels aer using this mulberry supplement. The explanation for the weight loss is that Zuccarin uses natural mulberry leaf extract and chromium to block absorption of sugars in the foods we eat. When these sugars are undigested, our blood sugar stabilizes, and weight loss occurs.
ZUCCARIN MAX CHANGED MY LIFE “I read about Zuccarin in a magazine and since I have blood sugar issues, I started taking the supplement right away. I have taken it for 2 years now and can’t imagine being without it. I have seen my blood sugar levels stabilize and I have even lost 25 pounds of weight since starting. I have recommended Zuccarin to a lot of my friends and they are now experiencing the same good results as I have. I love this product.”
Elenor C., Mia i, FL. Zuccarin™ from New Nordic is the no.1 selling mulberry leaf supplement in the world. Simply take one tablet before each meal. Do something good for your blood sugar and soon feel the difference.

You can collect eye-popping shades like Sway, a luscious lavender, Life’s A Beach, an electric coral, and Stone Fox, a deep, moody grey (yes, grey!), every time you make a trip to the drugstore. But if posh neutrals are more your speed, take a cue from Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, who wore Soft-Spoken and Sandstorm at last year’s Met Gala, sparking a social media frenzy.
