THE IMPACT OF TECHNOLOGY
3 WAYS TO FIGHT
More delicate than the skin on your face, the neck
is one of the first places to show age. And tech may be making matters worse. Without realizing it, we’re repeatedly looking down at our phones and keyboards. In fact, the average person looks down at their phone 221 times a day. As with squint lines around the eyes, these repeated motions can become permanent, leading to horizontal neck lines and sagging skin called Tech Neck.
TIGHTEN ON THE GO StriVectin’s Tightening Neck Serum Roller is a lightweight serum for the neck that glides on smoothly and absorbs immediately. Apply throughout the day to instantly smooth and firm skin anytime, anywhere.

KEEP YOUR CHIN UP You can fight Tech Neck by looking down at your devices less often. When glancing at your phone, hold it up to your face rather than looking down at the screen.
DETOX FROM YOUR DEVICES Establish a daily “no phone zone”. Setting aside more tech-free time each day will give your neck a break. And, it’s a great way to interact with the world around you.
SCIENCE HOLDS THE SOLUTION StriVectin’s collection of neck experts is powered by NIA-114 technology to smooth existing wrinkles, defend against sagging, and fight Tech Neck. summer BeAuTY PLUS:
WOrk Out Like an OLympian with this one move
We could certainly use more optimism in our lives, and optimistic-themed issues like Glow’s latest one are a beautiful thing. In a world of sadness and anger, a smile could be all it takes to turn a bad day into a wonderful day for someone in need. Going through life as a hoper and an “optimistic @ heart” is such a gift and a sure way to success and happiness. So let’s all wear a smile and pay it forward—it will surely boomerang right back at us. –Niki, Markham, Ont. I enjoy your magazine, but I took exception to your statement that
I really enjoyed seeing Lisa Hannam’s praise for massage in “This Feels Ah-Mazing!” in the Summer 2016 issue of Glow. I honestly used to feel guilty and almost ashamed that I went for massages. People would say “Must be nice,” or “Wish I had time for that,” to me all the time. But considering the way massage has impacted my overall mental health, along with my physical health, I see it as being just as important as taking my vitamins and getting exercise. If I can’t make time for a professional one, I practice self-massage while watching TV— and your article had some great tips on how to do that. You won’t believe how calming it is, and I swear I sleep better! –Lindsey, Whitby, Ont.
64 per cent of women don’t orgasm during sex in “Put a Ring on It.” That should be changed to “intercourse” sex, as most women will orgasm with a vibrator when they have sex, but I guess we’re not selling vibrators here. –Wendy, Edmonton I absolutely love Glow magazine and cannot wait for its arrival (especially in time for summer!). I really appreciate that Glow includes both luxury items and affordable items to suit everyone’s needs (and my constant need for beautiful bronzers and lipsticks!). I
especially loved the article about the importance of wearing sunscreen and the relevant “excuses” people have. I also really enjoyed the “optimism” article (“What’s Your Happiness Baseline?”). It is hard to stay optimistic 24/7, but is important to remember that nobody can (but there’s always light at the end of the tunnel!). I can’t wait for the next issue! –Kaitlin, Toronto I always enjoy getting Glow in the mail. I feel like the magazine is made for the “everyday girl.” The “take it easy” bronzing ideas are great for all skin types. Love

the girls with the more bold eyebrows, braids and natural looks. I also loved the Best in Beauty article—it looks like there are some really great products to try. It was a great issue; I’m looking forward to the next one. –Elyce, Oakville, Ont. I have just read this issue coverto-cover. I’ve often glanced over the magazine, but with this issue I found I was re-reading articles. I love the colour, the illustrations and the articles. From the how-to articles to the new products, I found it all very refreshing. Thanks. –Bonnie, Toronto

FRESH FOR FALL Discover Lip Crème in Wine, a hybrid between lipstick and lipgloss that provides saturated, rich colour with a medium shine finish.
#HaiRGOaLs our cover star Chiara Ferragni may be best known for her fashion blogger status, but if her role as global ambassador for Pantene has taught us anything, it’s that good hair can be effortless and cool. Check out her story and #hairinspo on page 53.
Good Hair Vibes only
Real quick: What’s the current relationship status between you and your
hair? If your answer is, “It’s complicated,” you’re not alone. During a recent trip to New York with P&G, I heard an alarming hair stat from the folks at Pantene: Not even one out of 10 women is happy with her hair. Ouch. I may not be part of the 1 per cent, but I definitely feel the connection between my mood and mane. The other day I experienced a noticeably bad hair day. You know the ones, where it appears to ruin your mood even before you leave the house in the morning? The bad vibes soon trickled down to my outfit and eventually my state of mind, creating a domino effect of sorts. Let’s just say I was a new person the next day after I lathered and rinsed. Hint: If you ever need a favour from me, be sure to catch me on a hair-washing day. Trivial sounding, sure, to blame your mood on your lack of crowning glory, but maybe there’s some mettle behind it. You can’t deny the euphoric feeling after experiencing an exceptional blowout or fresh dye job. At least I can’t. Dramatic makeover recipients would likely agree. It was the wise Nora Ephron who said, “Sometimes I think that not having to worry about your hair anymore is the secret upside of death.” Funny, yes, but surely there’s a better way to get you to a happy hair place. And it begins right here with our annual Hair Issue. If you’re ready to love your locks again, then dig right in.

The actor, social media star and Bioré ambassador on why she’s content with working and playing hard now and resting later—much, much later. By MishAL CAzMi “First oF all, when I arrive, whoever is picking me up hopefully brings me Tim Hortons. Everyone here calls them donut holes but I still call them Timbits, and will for the rest of my life,” Shay Mitchell tells me over the phone from her current hometown of Los Angeles when I ask her about what she looks forward to most when she’s in Toronto. The Ontario-born, Vancouver-bred native very enthusiastically lists all her favourite food joints that she hits up without fail when she’s in town. “I go straight to Island Foods, my favourite restaurant. I always get the boneless chicken roti. Then I’ll do Salad King, Swiss Chalet, Pickle Barrel.…” A few weeks after our interview, she’s in the city for the 2016 iHeartRadio Much Music Video Awards and makes good on her promise by visiting several of those places. I know this because she actively records every delicious stop on Snapchat. She might sound like your typical foodie, but Shay Mitchell is anything but. The 29-year-old is one of four lead actors in the hit TV show Pretty Little Liars, a teen drama that catapulted her from relatively unknown newcomer to bright young thing six years ago. This fall, she’s promoting the seventh and possibly final season of the show. Outside of PLL, Mitchell has steadily built a well-rounded

career, and not just in acting. She starred in her first feature film, Mother’s Day, alongside Jennifer Aniston, this past spring, published her first book, Bliss (which she co-wrote with her BFF), in 2015, signed on as Bioré’s ambassador and all the while has been creating something of a social media empire with millions of followers that span Instagram, Snapchat, YouTube and Twitter. And Mitchell very actively rules over her social media kingdom. The half-Filipino, half-Irish star often mines her fans for ideas on things to eat, see and do. “I’ll tweet, ‘Where should I go here? What is the best pizza here?’” she says. “That’s why I want to have social media, because I want to connect with the fans and hear what they have to say, and we can share things.” That means taking them along for the ride, everywhere from backstage at music awards to #shaycations in places like Kenya and Fiji. Being so visible inevitably requires a willingness to relinquish at least some privacy. For the most part, Mitchell gets it. “Whatever I’m comfortable talking about, I’ll put on my Instagram or Snapchat.” But here’s where she draws the line: “You won’t see me talk or Snap about relationships. Everything else I really do try to be open about. I really want people to have a glimpse [into] my life.” With all the hats Mitchell wears, I joke about whether she ever gets any sleep. “When you’re really passionate about what you’re doing, whatever it may be, you just have that extra energy,” she says. “And I don’t like sleeping, I don’t like taking naps. I like to be awake, to be doing things. Life is so short, and my motto is ‘I’ll sleep when I’m dead.’ There are too many things to see and do.”
BEaUTy BEaT Bioré Baking Soda Pore Cleanser, $12 “The amazing thing about the baking soda cleanser is that I don’t have to use makeup wipes anymore because it gets everything off.” Deep Cleansing Charcoal Pore Strips, $12 “I’ve been using nose strips ever since I can remember! Get your shine on. “A cream highlighter will give your eyes that wet look without looking too glittery,” says LeBlanc. Apply it to the centre of the lid, just above the lashes, and onto the inside corner of the eye and brow bone to open up your eyes. Benefit High Beam Liquid Highlighter, $34

Falsies be gone. “You don’t want heavy lashes, as they won’t stand out against the black shadow.” Instead, LeBlanc recommends brushing on two coats of ultra-black mascara for a full, fluttery fringe.
Apply eye primer then line your eyes (upper and lower) and waterline with a black pencil liner. Then smudge the liner on your top lid upwards with your finger (don’t worry about making it perfect).
Using your finger, tap a dark powder eyeshadow over top of the liner then buff it out with a fluffy blending brush.
Finish off the look with two coats of mascara on top and bottom lashes.

BEAUTY Postcard Mishal Cazmi travels to Ouessant, France, to learn about the secret lives of black bees and their skinsoothing, wrinkle-fighting honey, the magic ingredient in Guerlain’s Abeille Royale skincare line.

GettinG to ouessant feels a bit like being in a Bond movie. The tiny island (known as Ushant in English) sits on the most westerly point of France, off the coast of Brittany. For part of the journey, I’m in full 007 mode, hopping on a quick flight from Paris to Brest. Since the island is flanked by the Atlantic Ocean and the English Channel, the second portion of the trip involves a motorboat. That’s when my dreams of espionage start to fall apart. During the 45-minute, stomachchurning ride, the boat practically flies across the choppy waters, the wind whipping through my hair and the salty water splashing my face. So much for feeling like a spy. The moment the island comes into view, I feel like I’m entering the villain’s lair—with waves crashing against jagged granite rocks and lighthouses jutting out from a blanket of fog. It’s easy to see why it’s home to one of the most powerful lighthouses in the world (called Phare du Créac’h) and why the island’s very name once struck fear among sailors. All this is important because the island’s remote location and unwelcoming rocky shoreline help to make it one of the purest ecosystems in the world, recognized as a “biosphere reserve” by UNESCO. It’s why French beauty brand Guerlain carefully picked this region to source the honey used in its luxe, ultra-moisturizing Abeille Royale skincare range. Ouessant is home to a species of black bees (called Apis Mellifera Mellifera if you want to get fancy) that are unlike any others on the planet. They live a pretty sweet life on the island, untouched by pollution, pesticides or people. That makes for some very, very good honey. While it looks intimidating from afar, the island transforms into an otherworldly kind of beauty the moment you set foot on it. The rocks give way to lush land dotted with wildflowers and sheep and villages made up of gardens overflowing with fluffy hydrangeas and quaint little shops and restaurants. Roughly 1,000 people live here but—fun fact—they’re outnumbered by their winged cohabitants (roughly 10 million!). In other words, there are more bees here than on Beyoncé’s Instagram. When it’s time to visit the hives, we get into our beekeeper suits and take a short drive before stopping and walking the rest of the way. That’s because bees aren’t exactly a tourist attraction and you can only visit their home if you’re a part of the Ouessant Black Bee Conservation Association. “It can’t be like a zoo because every time you go there, you stress the bees,” explains Jacques Kermagoret, our tour guide and resident bee whisperer (his actual title is president of the association).

Exploring the island of Ouessant on foot.
As I watch Kermagoret and his beekeeping partner-in-crime, Paul, carefully extract the honey from the honeycombs, I get the lowdown on the process. They collect it three times a year—in July, August and September—and amass about 4,200 grams worth. That’s when Guerlain comes in. They get the goods twice yearly, which accounts for 20 per cent of the total production. (Some of that liquid gold is jarred and sold locally—you’ll have to look for Miel de Bouche about town.) Guerlain isn’t just on board with honey because it’s a buzzy ingredient (pun intended). There’s science to back it up, of course. Honey’s known for its healing and soothing properties, for being packed with antioxidants, B vitamins, minerals and cell-fuelling sugars and for helping with everything from wrinkles and loss of firmness to repairing micro-damages in the epidermis, the outer layer of skin. More importantly, the beauty brand’s relationship with bees is pretty personal. Its affair with bees began 163 years ago under Napoleon III, when perfumer Pierre-FrançoisPascal Guerlain created a bespoke perfume for the emperor and his wife in a bottle carved with gold bees, the emblem of the empire. Eventually, Guerlain adopted bees as its insignia, putting them on perfume bottles and in creams. Most notably, they’re featured in Abeille Royale, which uses the honey from Ouessant along with amino acid-rich royal jelly (that gooey stuff the worker bees feed their queen), which is also locally sourced in France. The line debuted in 2010 with a serum. This fall, the brand is launching three new creams with an even more souped-up formula featuring two new types of hyaluronic acid that penetrate deeper into the

skin, plus Moroccan honey. The trio slathers on like a dream, absorbs beautifully and smells like a delicate honey tea, a scent that was cooked up by Guerlain’s in-house perfumer, Thierry Wasser. But Guerlain’s relationship with Ouessant doesn’t end with the sweet stuff. In 2015, it announced a 10-year partnership that would

ThErE ArE morE BEEs hErE ThAn on BEyoncé’s InsTAgrAm. continue to protect and preserve the island’s unique ecosystem. The pact signals the larger problem of bees being in danger of extinction because of pesticide use, climate change, disease and loss of habitat. Losing good honey isn’t the only thing we should be worried about, says Kermagoret. “[Bees are] responsible for 30 per cent of the pollination of flowers. Without them, we will lose a huge amount of fruit, [and] sunflowers and sunflower seeds will disappear completely.” Before I leave Ouessant, I learn about yet another talent bees possess: the ability to predict the weather. “The queen will start laying eggs three weeks before we are going to have good weather, because she knows in three weeks’ time, it will be sunny,” explains Kermagoret. I look up at the clear, bright July sky and wonder if it’s time for the eggs to hatch. I may have felt like Bond at the beginning of my trip, but the bees are the real heroes here.
5. Product is bottled into the recognizable buttercup yellow packaging.
2. Conditioned and placed into tight packaging by a beekeeper, it’s sent directly to La Ruche, the factory where it’s stored in a dark, temperature-controlled setting. 1. Honey is collected in the beehives three times a year.
4. Total production time is six weeks, with quality control tests taking place after each step.
3. It’s then filtered before production to avoid any impurities in the final formula. octoBEr 2016 GLOW 31

Believe it or not, you can show your hair a little too much love. “some people do what i call the royal flush by washing their hair and using heat tools and styling products daily, which can really weather the hair,” says New york dermatologist Dr. Francesca Fusco. The over-accumulation of styling products also makes hair dull, adds elisabeth Bouhadana, scientific director for l’oréal Paris international. The fix? switch to a clarifying shampoo to remove buildup and boost shine.
Herbal Essences Honey, I’m Strong Strengthening Shampoo and Conditioner, $6 each
hormonal changes don’t just throw your body out of whack, they also affect your hair health. starting or discontinuing oral contraceptives will make you shed a great deal, says Fusco. expecting? “During pregnancy many women experience fabulous shiny hair, but it starts to shed after birth,” explains Bouhadana. Fusco’s advice: Take care of the hair that you have by using strengthening and repairing shampoos and avoid stress on your strands by ditching tight ponytails and heat tools, which can lead to breakage.
L’Oréal Paris Hair Expertise Color Radiance Shampoo, $8, and Conditioner for Normal Coloured Hair, $13
Greys may be enemy number one, but UV rays are a close second—they can fade your colour and leave hair dry and brittle, says Bouhadana. Go longer between colour refreshes by choosing a UV-protecting range, as well as UV-protecting oils (such as argan oil) after washing and styling to add hydration: “Many oils are really good for protecting your colour and are dry to the touch,” she explains. “They can repair and also protect against harmful UV rays and the oxidation process.”
Ogx Strength & Body + Bamboo Fiber-Full Shampoo and Conditioner, $11 each
if you can’t whip your hair back and forth like you used to, you can blame androgenetic alopecia, or female pattern thinning, according to Fusco. “As you age, the bulb that grows each hair fibre decreases in size, and if the size of the bulb decreases, so does the hair,” explains Bouhadana. To maintain the strength of your tresses and volume, she suggests shampoos and conditioners that will restore from the inside out. Go for ingredients like plumping collagen or strengthening proteins that will help repair the hair fibre.
Q: What’s the best way to blow-dry my hair with minimal heat damage? A: “A leave-in treatment will not only smooth the hair but also protect it from heat damage,” says Ivana Tonello, a beautyBOUTIQUE manager at Shoppers Drug Mart in Toronto. She recommends applying a lightweight leave-in product on wet hair from roots to tips before you blow-dry. Try L’Oréal Elnett Satin Hairspray Styling Heat Spray Volume, $18.

anything. We’d spend hours going through swatches of hair colour trying to decide on the perfect shade I’d try every month. My burka-wearing mom proudly called me her “punk rock daughter” without really knowing what it meant. A few years later, after I left home in my early 20s, I got into activism, shaved my head and found myself at Le Tigre concerts and feminist zine fairs. I was trying to carve out an identity for myself that reflected where I was at that point in my life and having an aggressive look best reflected that. I didn’t want to appear too masculine so I used my wardrobe to counterbalance my shaved head with pastel-coloured dresses and floral tops that made me feel strong and feminine. It wasn’t until my mid-20s, at the height of street style, when I came across unconventional (read: not blonde) style icons like Yasmin Sewell and Giovanna Battaglia, who were loved by street-style photogs like Scott Schuman and Tommy Ton, and I realized that embracing my natural hair texture was the coolest thing I could do. They also gave me myriad possibilities for the curls that I was conditioned to believe should be flatironed into submission. They weren’t the only ones making a case for curly hair. Now, with beauty trends being informed by real women on the street and on our Instagram feeds, our influences come in all sorts of shapes, sizes and hair textures. Combine that with a push for more diversity in fashion, and it’s no wonder that beauty brands are responding to our desire to enhance, not mask, our natural hair. After years of cutting, colouring, slicking back and shaving, I was curious to see what would happen if I just let my hair be after being inspired by icons like Solange and Sewell. I let my greys grow free and my curls grow wild. What I got was a sea of curls that were as untamed as the image I had been trying to project my entire life, an image that truly felt like me. Turns out the most Author Samra Habib today rebellious thing I could do was to in her natural hair habitat embrace my natural self.
Interrupted At the height of curly hair appreciation, Samra Habib reflects on the long journey to accepting and loving her own mass of curls.
It’s easy for me to track my state of mind, the social issues I was passionate about, the music I loved and the feminist icons I was into at any given moment in the past two decades based on a photo of the kind of hair I had. Now, in my 30s, my big, wild hair has become a huge part of my identity, but in my teens and 20s, I tried on different looks in the hopes of finding one that fit me. Which isn’t an easy feat when you’re still trying to figure out who you are. I grew up in a strict Muslim household where speaking your mind and having an opinion were discouraged if you were a woman. Women should be seen, not heard, I was told as I rebelled against a life that was neatly laid out for me. At a time when I was instructed to wear the hijab and under no circumstance talk to any boys, I rebelled in unexpected ways. I wore my cream-coloured hijab during classes, but after-school dances were the perfect opportunity to let my long, thick hair loose and live my double life. Instead of eyeing or dancing with someone cute, I was more interested in flipping my hair back and forth to En Vogue’s “Free Your Mind.” I felt free letting out my big hair because chances were the kids from the mosque who could snitch on me wouldn’t be here grinding to LL Cool J’s “Doin’ It.” During those teen years, a golden opportunity presented itself when my mom enrolled in hairdressing school and I became her willing guinea pig. She used me to try out new hair-relaxing techniques (often burning my scalp in the process) and platinum blonde highlights, mostly because she knew that I’d be game for 34 GLOW OCTOBER 2016

Fizzy, creamy, candied and sweet— fall’s latest fragrances show off a medley of new and unique notes that’ll have you sniffing for more. By Sarah Daniel

Sweet Burberry My Burberry Black Eau de Parfum, $102 for 50 ml Noteworthy note: Candied rose if you’ve ever wanted to know how to bottle the essence of an iconic fashion piece, just ask perfumer Francis Kurkdjian, who’s done so twice with the Burberry trench. last year he created My Burberry, a fragrance with the classic khaki shade in mind. now, with My Burberry Black, Kurkdjian has channelled a noir version of the jacket. infused with jasmine and amber patchouli, it’s also amped up with candied rose and peach nectar, which is a jammier version of the traditional fruit note. “There are so many sweet perfumes out now,” says Denyse Beaulieu, author and fragrance historian. “[Perfumers] need to turn up the volume more and more in order to be heard.” My Burberry Black may be sweet, but it’s not twee like many of its peers, says Beaulieu. “it’s quite an adult fragrance.” That also makes it a technical feat, because giving candy to babies is a lot easier.

GourmaNd Michael Kors Wonderlust Eau de Parfum, $105 for 50 ml Noteworthy note: Almond milk
Remember when finding an espresso bar that stocked almond milk was next to impossible? Now, that elusive complement to your daily caffeine fix is stealing shelf space from soy. It’s also making its fragrance debut in Wonderlust, Michael Kors’s first foray into gourmand perfumes. “Everyone knows I like floral and citrus scents, but I think there is an allure to something that’s just a little bit sweet,” says Kors. In addition to creating an almond milk accord from scratch, perfumers Aurelien Guichard and Honorine Blanc also used a variety of benzoin—a resin derived from tree bark—that lends the scent a hint of cinnamon, fitting since the spice is perfect for sprinkling on lattes. Guichard and Blanc aren’t the first perfumers to mine menus for ideas. Recent fragrance launches have featured notes like edamame, coffee and raw salt. The Wonderlust campaign, which features model Lily Aldridge on a yacht, calls to mind another popular beverage that may also pop up in perfumery soon. “If you were on that yacht,” Kors told WWD, “you would be drinking a good rosé.”
A combination of patchouli, citrus, floral, musk and oak moss, chypres can be heavy and old-fashioned, says perfumer Olivier Cresp. With YSL Mon Paris, he set out to make a modern chypre, reinterpreting the fragrance category for the Tinder generation. Since Cresp loves patchouli (his early-’90s hit, Thierry Mugler Angel, featured a heavy dose of the aromatic plant), he decided to use two different varieties and mix them with fruit notes like strawberry and pear and a lighter, millennialfriendly white musk. He also added daturas to evoke that head-inthe-clouds feeling of falling in love. “It’s a hypnotic flower. When you smell it, you feel a little dizzy,” he explains. Since capturing the datura’s scent is complicated (it’s poisonous and smells different depending on what time of day you encounter it), Cresp’s team used scent-capture technology. Like Snapchat for the fragrance world, the mobile contraption takes an olfactory photograph of that moment in time, allowing the perfumer to replicate it afterward. A modern chypre, indeed.
Note Marc Jacobs Divine Decadence Eau de Parfum, $140 for 100 ml Noteworthy note: Champagne
Yves Saint Laurent Mon Paris Eau de Toilette, $110 for 50 ml Noteworthy notes: Patchouli and datura
Chanel No. 5 L’Eau Eau de Toilette, $119 for 50 ml Noteworthy note: May rose
If you haven’t heard of Chanel No. 5, you may as well be living under a rock. Now imagine being the person tasked with reinventing a fragrance with Brad Pitt-level celebrity status. Perfumer Olivier Polge was more than up for the task, having sniffed Chanel No. 5 for the first time as a toddler; his father, Jacques, was the in-house perfumer at Chanel for more than three decades before Olivier succeeded him. The fifth reinterpretation of the original masterpiece, Chanel No. 5 L’Eau still features OG ingredient May rose, handpicked in the south of France. Despite sticking close to the original recipe, the new version of the perfume feels like it has been repainted with watercolours, says Beaulieu. She’s referring to its freshness, which Polge achieved by dialling down the vanilla and making the citrus juicier, the jasmine airier and the ylang-ylang greener. Comparing No. 5 L’Eau to No. 5 is also like comparing an LBD from the ’20s to one you’d find on the racks now, says Beaulieu. “Vintage dresses have linings, so you have to hold yourself in a certain way,” she says. “With No. 5 L’Eau it’s like they ripped the lining out and added lycra. It’s more comfortable to wear.”
“She loves to party.” That’s the woman perfumer Annie Buzantian had in mind when she was creating Marc Jacobs Divine Decadence, saying, “I always envisioned her with a champagne glass in her hand at all times.” In other words, she’s definitely poppin’ bottles. Instead of creating a synthetic replica of the fizzy aperitif to pour into the fragrance, Buzantian used an extract from real champagne, something that hasn’t been done in perfumery before. “It doesn’t impact the smell, but it gives [the scent] that sparkly, bubbly effect,” she says. As a follow-up to last fall’s Decadence, Buzantian doesn’t want Divine Decadence to be labelled as what fragrance industry insiders refer to as a flanker. Instead, she thinks of it as an entirely new perfume. “Decadence is a novel, and Divine Decadence is the sequel. Some of the characters change, but we continue the story line,” she explains. For instance, white flowers like gardenia and hydrangea are new protagonists, along with saffron, which Buzantian used for its ability to create a velvety effect. The latter’s also a luxe complement to the champagne’s effervescence. We’ll toast to that. OcTOBer 2016 GLOW 39

I love the versatility of a good pair of ankle boots. They work well with skirts, dresses, pants, culottes… basically anything and everything in your wardrobe, but that doesn’t mean one style fits all. If you’re a girl on the go, choose flat boots that are comfy and cute; if you’re on your feet for short sprints, classic kitten heels provide the perfect mini lift; and if you’re mostly deskbound (or travelling by car), go big or go home with some towering stilettos.
When a good hair day just isn’t in the cards (hey, it happens), reach for a trendy hat that will distract from your lacklustre locks. This season, you’ll definitely want to get your hands on a quirky topper with an oversized pom pom. Whether you choose a knit toque or structured cap, it’s all about the fluff puff on top!

If we are at peak fashion blogging, Chiara Ferragni is already scaling down the other side of success and onto the next big thing. See why she’s living her best life and showing no signs of slowing down.
OCTOBER 2016 GLOW 53
EvEn if you arEn’t familiar with thE roll of thE “r” in Chiara or thE italian inflECtion of fErragni, ChanCEs arE you’vE ComE to know thE faCE bEhind thE namE or, morE likEly, hEr rECEnt #outfitofthEday. The 29-year-old fashion plate is a pioneer on the blogging front, having started The Blonde Salad in 2009—although now the blogger label holds no weight against Ferragni’s ever-expanding resumé. The Italian-born Los Angeles import has morphed into a bona fide fashion designer (her shoe and accessory line is Instagram gold), a global beauty ambassador, a Vogue Spain cover model and even the first blogger/ subject of a Harvard case study. All while her social currency multiplies, from likes to followers (in the millions) to big-time endorsement deals. We sat down with the newly minted Pantene global ambassador to talk great hair and killer influence (obvi). Listen in and get ready for a wave of general life inspo. GlOw: Many fashion bloggers consider you the high priestess of the blogosphere. How did you get started? ChiaRa FERRaGni: I studied international law and in the last year I started The Blonde Salad. I used to upload my outfit and travel photos on Lookbook and Flickr so I already had a big following there, but I didn’t know how to do anything about it. I started following some American fashion bloggers and personal blogs and I was like, ‘Oh, this is actually pretty cool to have your own space,’ so I figured it was better to start my own website. GlOw: Your unique personal style seems to be the MVP of your brand. How would you describe it? CF: I’ve always been into vintage and low cost with luxury. I rarely wear head-to-toe designer unless it’s fashion week or an event. It’s really about mixing different styles together to create that cool effect.
CF: My hair is one of my favourite accessories. I always like it when it’s
more effortless, cool and chic. I don’t do too many crazy hairstyles. GlOw: How does it feel to rep such a classic hair-care brand as Pantene? CF: When they asked me to do it I was like, ‘Hell, ya!’ I was really familiar with [the brand] and it follows my esthetic. I wouldn’t want to work with somebody that isn’t the perfect fit for me because my followers wouldn’t recognize it. GlOw: What are your top two products right now? CF: I really like the Minute Miracle conditioner, especially when I
travel and can’t bring a thousand products with me. I hate using hairspray when it leaves your hair super greasy, but the Airspray is cool because I can still touch my hair and play with it. It gives more texture but it doesn’t feel like my hair is dirty or anything. GlOw: What’s your advice to aspiring bloggers? CF: Don’t let anybody bring you down or tell you what you have to
do or be. It’s really about writing your own story. Of course you can take advice from people but just trust your instinct and go for it. GlOw: Do you have an open dialogue with your fans? CF: I do. I feel like I read a lot of the comments. I receive a lot of emails
so I read those too. It’s also meeting so many people in the streets or at events. I will never say no to a photo.
GlOw: Most people have a love/hate relationship with their hair.
GlOw: What’s the story behind your oft-used hashtag #neverstop? CF: It’s really my theory of life. Never stop learning and never stop
What about you?

56 GLOW OCTOBER 2016
We tasked Pantene consulting stylist Justin German with creating three effortlessly cool hair looks for our cover model Chiara Ferragni. Here’s what he dreamt up. JusTIn GERman
1. a Better Braid
2.Wrap It up
Justin says: “This is a cool temporary alternative to the half-shaven-head look. By tightly braiding the side of the hair, similar to a cornrow, it gives the illusion that the hair is almost missing on one side. It’s a great option for those who don’t actually want to shave their head, but envy the look.”
Justin says: “A headscarf is a simple way to get hair out of your face while looking stylish. This look brings back retro vibes and I just love how boho the scarf looks. I also find headscarves great when travelling to warmer climates—so retro and chic.”
Justin says: “Waves with a feathered texture, complemented by a modern middle part, are big this season. A great blowout with a middle part is a simple and easy hairstyle that is very modern and avant garde.”
DIY: Start with a diagonal side hair part. Braid hair underhand (vs. the traditional French style) as tightly and as close to the head as you can, gathering it into the braid as you go. Keep fly-aways at bay by misting with hairspray throughout the styling process.
DIY: Take a large-barrelled curling iron and wrap a few sections of the hair that frames the face. Tie a headscarf over the hair, making sure some pieces fall out. Finish off with a mist of lightweight hairspray to keep the look soft and flexible.
PRODUCT PHOTOS: CARLO MenDOzA
Pro tip: “The most important thing is to start with healthy hair. I love the Pantene Intense Hydration collection, which instantly quenches hair with moisture without weighing it down. It’s a great base for any style.” –Justin German
TRY: Pantene Pro-V Style Series Air Spray, $9
DIY: Build a base of textured waves by prepping damp hair with curl-defining mousse, from roots to ends. Prep the damp ends of your strands with a lightweight styler to smooth hair and protect against heat styling. To create natural, textured waves, blow-dry hair while scrunching and twisting until it’s dry. Mist with a light hairspray for a natural hold. THE SLIMMING EFFECT OF STABLE BLOOD SUGAR LEVELS The link between sugar consumption and increased body fat has long been known. Too much sugar in the diet promotes more insulin, the fat storing hormone, and thus more body fat.
ecently an Italian study of a sugar-blocking supplement showed impressive weight loss results.1 The supplement, called ZuccarinTM, produced on average 20 pounds of weight loss, in only 90 days.
The subjects lost 10% of their body weight and lost 3 times the weight of the control group, who were on a controlled diet, but without a mulberry supplement. In addition, the subjects also experienced healthier blood sugar levels after using this mulberry supplement. The explanation for the weight loss is that Zuccarin uses natural mulberry leaf extract and chromium to block absorption of sugars in the foods we eat. When these sugars are undigested, our blood sugar stabilizes, and weight loss occurs.
ZUCCARIN MAX CHANGED MY LIFE “I read about Zuccarin in a magazine and since I have blood sugar issues, I started taking the supplement right away. I have taken it for 2 years now and can’t imagine being without it. I have seen my blood sugar levels stabilize and I have even lost 25 pounds of weight since starting. I have recommended Zuccarin to a lot of my friends and they are now experiencing the same good results as I have. I love this product.”
Elenor C., Mia i, FL. Zuccarin™ from New Nordic is the no.1 selling mulberry leaf supplement in the world. Simply take one tablet before each meal. Do something good for your blood sugar and soon feel the difference.
Zuccarin MaxTM is available at Shoppers Drug Mart.. For more information please call: 1-877-696-6734. 1- “White Mulberry Supplementation as Adjuvant Treatment of Obesity”, Journal of Biological Regulators and Homeostatic Agents., Vol 28, no.1, 2014.* To make sure this product is right for you, always read the label and follow the instructions.
GLOW PROMOTION January Schmanuary. Now is the time to think about your resolutions. Summer’s over and life is back to a normal routine. Create good habits by taking supplements and vitamins that help support the body. Here’s what you need to know:
Back to Routine Everyday Needs “The body needs 28 essential vitamins and minerals each day,” says Shoppers Drug Mart Pharmacist Maria Nenadovich, adding that a “good, comprehensive daily multivitamin” should give you what you need, especially on days when your diet isn’t what it should be. “You need these vitamins for healthy body functions, and you have to provide the quantities the body needs to avoid deficiencies.” Always consult with your health care provider (Pharmacist) to ensure which multivitamin is right for you. Another supplement to consider is omega-3 or fish and krill oil. “These fatty acids are necessary for cardiac function and many other body functions,” she says. “But not everyone’s diet has adequate fish.” Make your suppleMent habit stick Take it with breakfast! “Taking these on an empty stomach can affect absorption and cause bloating for some,” says Nenadovich. Note though, you should take calcium and magnesium together, and vitamin C and iron together, to boost absorption.

Exercise Needs There’s no arguing that fitness is good for the body over the long term. But the brief stress exercise causes the body (initial fatigue and dehydration, temporary muscle and joint pain, and even a quick lull in the immune system) calls for supplementation with specific nutrients, including protein and magnesium, says Nenadovich. And don’t forget to rehydrate with water.
Make your suppleMent habit stick “Post-workout, within an hour, take protein and magnesium to help with recovery and discomfort,” she says. Make it easy for yourself, so you don’t have to think about it. Put a water bottle in your bag. After your shower, have a protein shake or bar. Take magnesium when you rehydrate. Creating good habits is all about repetitive behaviour so you don’t have to remind yourself each time.
Orange Naturals MagPop Effervescent Drink A fun, tangy fizz supplement with magnesium.
Nature’s Bounty Hair, Skin & Nails Gummies Contains biotin to help maintain normal hair and skin and support nails.
Needs Specific To You Hair loss and gastrointestinal issues are not fun. “Depending on your diet, you may need to supplement with other nutrients to avoid deficiencies,” says Nenadovich, adding that vegetarians and vegans may be low on calcium, vitamin D, vitamin B-12, iron and biotin. That last nutrient, which comes naturally from eggs and meat, can affect hair and skin health. As for digestive issues, probiotics may help, especially with traveller’s diarrhea or irritable bowel syndrome, and boosting the immune system. “Yogurt may not always be the optimal way to get probiotics, so a supplement can help,” says Nenadovich. She adds that if you’re on a specific diet, talk to a dietitian to see what supplements you may need. And before taking a supplement, talk to your doctor or pharmacist. “It’s important to rule out underlying medical conditions.” Hair thinning and digestive issues can be symptoms of other issues. Your doctor may be able to diagnose them with an exam or a blood test.
Make your suppleMent habit stick With some supplements, you will want to make sure to consult with your pharmacist or physician first. Once you determine whether a product is right for you, make sure the habit sticks by taking supplements at the same time of day such as with breakfast or keep them at your desk so they are handy when you arrive at work each day.

IS yOuR WORkOuT RuININg yOuR HAIR? A girl worth her weight in hair ties knows being active can damage your hair. From ponytail breakage to over-washing, your locks go through a lot. Olympian and Team Canada soccer keeper Stephanie Labbé and Aylin Carolina Abraham, hairstylist and owner of Cabello by Carolina salon in Toronto, share their secrets on gym-proofing hair. STEPHANIE LAbbé
1. KEEP IT SIMPLE
2. HAIr rECOvEry DAyS
A quick search for “gym hair” on Pinterest shows delicate braids and piecey buns that we know wouldn’t last IRL. It’s easier (and less strain on the scalp) to go with effortless looks. Labbé sticks with a pony. “It’s simple, easy, and I am able to focus on my soccer or workout without having to constantly fix my hair.” Abraham, an avid braider who Instagrams #fitspo-worthy ’dos (@cabellobycarolina), says to switch it up: “Wear your hair in a ponytail one day, a topknot another, wear it low, wear it in braids. Do what’s best for your hair for that session.” For how-tos, check out her blog, cabellobycarolina.com.
“Because we sweat so much and wash our hair so often, it can dry out,” says Labbé. “I try not to wash my hair all the time, and wear my hair down [when I’m not playing] soccer or in a loose, halfup style to give it a break.” If you can get away with just a water rinse in the shower, go for it, says Abraham, and let it air-dry. “We think we need to wash our hair after every sweat session, but honestly we don’t have to.” Tangle Tip: Use a wide-tooth comb instead of a big brush to get rid of knots—and be gentle. 3. ACCESSOrIzE
To avoid hair breakage, opt for snagfree hair ties and thick bands that
won’t dent your hair post-workout, says Abraham. “Use bobby pins to secure the little hairs that fall on your neck, or use a headband,” she adds. Labbé’s game-day look: a no-slip pink headband to keep strays in place.

1. Lean forward and stay low. It’ll engage your abs and work your legs harder. “By staying as low as you can, you have to pull the knees up to the chest more, so it feels like more of a high knee move, instead of pushing the pedal down,” Clarke says. 2. Fully extend your legs. You may think hunching over expends the most energy, but Clarke says to lengthen the legs with each pedal push. 3. Do push-ups on the bike. Clarke says to put your hands at the high point on the handlebars (position three, for spin junkies). Bend at the waist so you lean forward, putting
THE PHARMACIST SAYS: If you’re feeling more “blah” than “slay,” you know fall has hit. Short days and long nights have us heading straight for the couch after work. For a quick solution, we asked Poonam Prajapati, Shoppers Drug Mart pharmacist and owner, for help. But it’s not as easy as swallowing a pill. “Really, it stems from lifestyle,” she says, specifically sleeping, eating right and exercising. Prajapati suggests talking to your doctor about taking a blood test to check for things like low iron and B12, or even to discuss thyroid issues. Taking vitamins and minerals when you don’t actually need them can cause complicated issues, from constipation to throwing red blood cell counts off. Also, do your best to “get seven to eight hours of quality sleep.” Keep a sleep log, try a few nights in a different bed than your partner, eat a balanced diet and avoid caffeine and alcohol in the evenings.

While one person stands and spins as hard and as fast as they can for 30 seconds, the others sit and spin. When their time is up, they point to someone else to “pop up” and bike. “It will push you,” says Clarke. 5. Download a BPM app to help decide which music to spin to. Clarke says you need between 80 and 100 BPMs for an effective workout. “I’m really loving Afrojack,” she says. “He’s really good because he always has 30-second sprints [100 BPMs] and then at least two climbs [80 BPMs].”

My hair was thinning! Maya was shocked by the change in her hair. Fullness and volume were replaced by thinness and lifeless hair. She had to do something. Here is her story:
he hair I found in my brush, in the shower and on my cardigan was unfamiliar to me. It was thinning like never before. How could this be happening?
I had to do something I found out my mother experienced the same problems when she was younger, and she simply accepted her fate. But so much of my personality is in my hair, and I did not want to have the same problems. I had read about the importance of hair nutrients, so I decided to focus on the inside rather than on the outside, and went looking for a good supplement.
My hair now feels fuller I was recommended a natural product called Hair Volume™. I have now used it for 2 months and I am really satisfied with the product. My hair feels full and healthy and even my nails feel much stronger. The shedding has also almost stopped. This is proof to me that proper nutrition on the inside helps you look your best on the outside. I highly recommend Hair Volume to women who have the same issues as I had.” Maya N., Sweden

THE DEal: “On average, we lose 100 hairs per day,” says Ulmer. So if that hair in your shower drain is starting to look like Cousin Itt, or you’re noticing bald patches, it’s time to visit your doctor.

78 GLOW OCTOBER 2016
Problems like acne, hair loss and brittle nails can often be corrected with a few changes in your beauty routine. But these symptoms can also act as powerful clues that something is going on beneath the surface, says Marcie Ulmer, a dermatologist with Vancouver’s Pacific Dermaesthetics and a clinical instructor of dermatology and skin science at the University of British Columbia.
THE FIx: “The first step in determining why you’re losing hair is a simple blood test,” says Shillington. Once a thyroid disorder is ruled out, your doctor or dermatologist may prescribe a drug or a topical steroid to either slow down hair loss or promote new hair growth. There are also many non-surgical treatments available, such as low-level laser treatments, which stimulate blood flow to the scalp. To curb hair loss, Shillington recommends eating a balanced diet that includes plenty of protein, vegetables and fruit. “[Processed] sugar should be eliminated, especially if the hair loss is in the temple area,” she says. That’s because, according to her, it’s a pattern that’s often connected to polycystic ovary syndrome and poor blood regulation. Our experts recommend increasing your intake of protein, B and D vitamins, iron, zinc and silica, either through food, such as nuts, seeds, eggs, leafy greens and beans, or supplements. Treat yourself to stressreducing meditation and yoga, and pass on harsh chemical hair products, high-heat styling tools and tight hairbands.

Your hair is part of your signature look. So it’s no surprise that hair loss is a worry for many women. Surprisingly, it’s actually pretty common, especially by age 50, according to the Canadian Dermatology Association (CDA). But certain factors can cause you to lose hair at any age—often temporarily, but sometimes permanently. These can include stress, some meds, becoming a mama (rising hormones keep you from losing hair while pregnant, but not after delivery) and genetics. It can also be due to a deficiency in protein, iron or B vitamins, says Stacey Shillington, a naturopathic doctor with Toronto’s Rosedale Dermatology Centre. Another common culprit behind excessive hair loss is anemia, a blood disorder with low iron levels.
pimple problems Acne is hAnds-down the most common skincare problem seen by doctors, according to the CDA. It usually pops up at puberty and through adolescence, but for up to one in four people, it drags on into adulthood. You can thank sebum, an oily substance produced by your skin. When hair follicles become clogged with it, plus dirt and dead skin cells, your face becomes a zit party. ThE DEal: Lisa Kellett, a dermatologist at Toronto’s DLK Cosmetic Dermatology and Laser Clinic, says that changes in hormone levels, stress, environmental toxins and facial products are common culprits. But when acne appears with an increase in body hair growth, or hair loss, it could indicate polycystic ovary syndrome. “If you have an increase in acne along with other symptoms,” she says, “get a referral to see a dermatologist.”
aCnE is hanDs-DOwn ThE mOsT COmmOn skinCaRE pROBlEm sEEn By DOCTORs.
ThE Fix: Acne on its own is rarely a serious health issue. It can, however, do a number on your selfesteem. Ulmer helps patients regain confidence through treatments that might include antibiotics, corticosteroids or, in some cases, the birth control pill. While the relationship between diet and acne has long been debated, recent research suggests that certain foods may be linked to acne, including dairy and white bread. “A diet high in fruits, vegetables and lean proteins, along with low-GI carbohydrates, has been shown to reduce the production of sebum,” says Alexandra Anca, a Toronto registered dietitian. “Fatsoluble vitamins [A, D, E] and omega-3 fatty acids may reduce acne,” she adds. Acne sufferers should avoid creams and oils, says Kellett: “Stick with gels and clear SPF sprays.” And swap liquid makeup for less pore-clogging powders.

nail snags if you’re obsessed with getting manis , you’re probably familiar with peeling, bendy, easily broken nails, which result from long-term nail polish use or acrylic or gel nails. Too much moisture can be an offender too. “Brittle nails often point to endocrine conditions, such as hypothyroidism, kidney disease and nutrient and vitamin deficiencies,” says Anca. ThE DEal: The American Osteopathic College of Dermatology says that if fingernails are brittle but toenails are strong, the cause isn’t an internal health problem. If both fingernails and toenails are brittle, the cause may be an issue with your thyroid, iron-deficiency anemia or a deficiency in vitamin A (which processes protein to harden nails), B (specifically biotin), C or D. “On average, it takes six months to grow out a nail,” says Kellett. “So if the symptoms don’t improve, or there are other

symptoms, like weight loss, you should seek medical attention.” ThE Fix: In some studies, biotin, a B vitamin, has been shown to reduce brittle nails in at least one-third of cases, says Anca. It’s also known to speed up hair growth. “Liver and cooked eggs are excellent natural sources of biotin,” she adds. A lack of calcium can also be a factor because of a growing trend away from dairy. If this sounds like you, be sure to supplement with 1,000 to 1,200 milligrams of calcium per day. If the issue is iron-deficiency anemia, taking up to 18 mg of iron per day can correct the problem. But since the most common cause of brittle nails is external trauma, Kellett suggests taking a break from nail polish to let your nails breathe. Use gloves when doing dishes, adds Ulmer, and moisturize after washing your hands. Lastly, never push back a cuticle. “Your cuticle is there for a reason,” Kellett says, “to protect the nail bed.”

take a kundaLini cLass Kundalini yoga, the kind that teaches you about “being in the present,” might be just what you need, says yogi and body-positive coach Demetria Jackson, owner of Demetria Jackson Yoga in Toronto, whose studio welcomes a variety of body sizes. “Yoga helps us accept parts of ourselves we have been conditioned to believe are unlovable,” she says. “I feel more free [doing yoga], and it’s not in spite of my body, but because of it.” Yoga helps to de-stress, calm and strengthen that body-mind connection. “It’s a workout, a therapy session and meditation, all-in-one,” says Jackson. Her favourite moves include child’s pose, but it’s achieving the challenging ones, like Sarvangasana (shoulder stand), that make her feel like a boss. Make a dOctOR’s appOintMent How many times have you put off scheduling a doctor’s appointment? It’s time to book one now. worth. “We have to stop glorifying being busy. Being busy shouldn’t be an indication of our importance,” explains Massaquoi, adding that it can affect our health when we don’t have time to prioritize it. “We need to practise daily self-love and, when dealing with our health, we need to ask questions until we are satisfied with the answers we receive.” Rethink yOuR squad If your circle of friends is more reality TV crowd than supportive crew, it’s time to make over your squad. Samantha Cochrane, manager of girls’ mentoring at the Canadian Women’s Foundation, sees first-hand the impact a positive group of women can have on each other. “We learn to collaborate, support and build community together, and that is the blueprint for becoming confident and self-assured women,” she says. If we surround ourselves with those with similar self-worth instead of people who try to cut us down, judge us or hold us up to some unrealistic beauty ideal, we are much more likely to like ourselves and our bodies. Get naked and dance My last tip, for those who have the chutzpah, is something I do daily—a naked mirror dance. Before I get dressed each morning, I focus on my beautiful uneven breasts and think of my tummy scars as a symbol of my resilience from winning past health battles, and I dance to a rhythm in my head. Even if you don’t dance, next time you head into the shower, I beg you to congratulate your body for all it’s pushed you through. If I can admit in a national magazine that I dance naked, you can thank your body.

How we look plays a big part in how we feel about our bodies, sure, but there are two words that can make a big impact: self-care. What is it? It’s a buzzy term used in mental health circles that means caring for yourself (surprise, surprise) and the steps you take to do that. As women, our needs are often met last, after taking care of our families, partners and work, but being selfless doesn’t always do a body good. Here are four ways to do self-care that will make you body-confident.

Take the ad campaign, which stars models and real-life BFFs Frida Gustavsson and Jac Jagaciak frolicking like nymphs through the moonlit woods with their spirit animals, a snowy owl and a grey wolf. Or the notes. Basing it on the original Nina (dreamed up by master perfumer Olivier Cresp in 2006), perfumers Christophe Raynaud and Marie Salamagne reimagined the scent as a woody floral gourmand built around notes of caramel and everlasting flower. If the latter sounds dreamy, that’s because it is. “[When] you squeeze the flower and the leaves, you keep them for 24 hours on your skin. It’s amazing,” explains Salamagne from Nina Ricci headquarters on the Champs-Elysées in Paris. The perfumers also added fizzy notes like wildberries and tempered it with vanilla and sandalwood, pushing the scent in a whole new gourmand direction. And when you bottle it up inside the now iconic apple-shaped blue flacon, you get a fairy-tale scent that befits its name. – MIShAL CAzMI Nina Ricci Luna Eau de Toilette, $72 for 50 ml
