Sunday May 12th Mother’s Day Prayer

God, We thank You for our mothers to whom You have entrusted the care of every precious human life from its very beginning in the womb. You have given to woman the gift to bear life. Lord, we pray that every woman may come to understand the full meaning of that blessing, which gives her an unlimited capacity for selfless love for every child she may be privileged to bear, and for all your children. Watch over every mother who is with child, strengthen her faith in Your fatherly care and love for her and for her unborn baby. Give her courage in times of fear or pain, understanding in times of uncertainty and doubt, and hope in times of trouble. Grant her joy in the birth of her child. To mothers, you have given the great privilege and responsibility of being a child's first teacher and spiritual guide. Grant that all mothers may worthily foster the faith of their children to follow Christ. Help mothers to grow daily in knowledge and understanding of Your Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, and grant them the wisdom to impart this knowledge faithfully to their children and to all who depend upon them. Assist all "spiritual mothers", those who, though they may have no children of their own, nevertheless selflessly care for the children of others -- of every age and state in life. Grant that they may know the joy of fulfilling this motherly calling of women, whether in teaching, nursing, religious life, or in other work which recognizes and fosters the true dignity of every human being created in Your image and likeness. We ask that the Holy Spirit, the Comforter, to all mothers who sorrow for children that have passed away, is ill or separated from their families, or who are in trouble or danger of any kind. We ask your blessing on all those to whom you have entrusted motherhood. May Your

Holy Spirit constantly inspire and strengthen them. We ask in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, AMEN

Small Groups Men’s Small Group Ministry hosted its quarterly Men’s Small Group session in April. The men read, studied and discussed - The New Testament Book of James. The two Saturday session covered topics that focused on trials, temptation, being a good listener, faith and deeds, wisdom and prayers of faith. Let’s define a “Small Group”. A Small Group is a small gathering of followers of Christ meeting on their own, facilitated by a leader. This is not a new phenomenon. In fact, in the first few hundred years of the church, these kinds of groups were pretty much the only way to experience church. Luke describes this type of group in Acts 2:42-47, and throughout years of church history, the value of these groups hasn't changed. At SJMBC, we are creating and developing the same healthy, independently functioning, leaderfacilitated, small groups of people that Luke wrote about over 2,000 years ago. Currently, we have two established Small Groups that meets quarterly – The Men’s Small Group and the Married Couples Small Group. In the weeks and months to come, SJMBC will be developing new Small Groups that targets youth, singles, Christian authors, community outreach and more! If you are interested in being part of a Small Group or want to start your own Small Group, please see or contact Deacon Antonio Stephens for more information.

A Call to Holy Living SJMBC Capital Campaign A capital campaign can be a powerful time in the life of a church. God uses vision to stretch our faith to be more like Christ. In obedience to God, Jesus gave of Himself for others. He received a resurrection and a great harvest for His obedience. I believe that as we obey God and give of ourselves that God will do miracles for us as well. Many miracles happened in the Bible as people heard the word of the Lord and were obedient to that word. In Luke chapter 5 Jesus told Peter to throw his nets on the other side of the boat after a long night of unproductive fishing. When Peter was obedient to what Jesus said to do, he had a great haul of fish. It was a beautiful picture of a great harvest of people coming to Christ as well as a miracle in Peter's life.

May 5 - A Living Hope (1 Peter 1: 3-5)

SJMBC is in the process of purchasing a new church building and parsonage in Alton, Illinois to extend God’s Ministry. Our current home will also receive updates to address cosmetic and safety concerns. To significantly offset the cost of the purchase and updates, we have started a Capital Campaign in March 2013 and we have secured $ 4,300.00 as of April 2013 in pledge contributions from the membership. Our goal is to raise $85,000.00. We are asking current members, former members and friends of SJMBC to participate in the SJMBC Capital Campaign. To find out more about the SJMBC Capital Campaign and how to participate, see or call Kristine Stephens @ 618-462-4617. If you would like to give, you can give in person during tithes and offering time, via mail through money order and check or online by going to our website and click on the donation button. Note: online donations are safe, fast and convenient!
