Head of School Dearest San Jose Family, I don’t use the word “family” lightly in the salutation above. I really mean it! George Bernard Shaw said, “A happy family is but an earlier heaven,” and having enjoyed every moment of my first year at San Jose Episcopal Day School, I would heartily agree! This is a family. From the moment I stepped onto campus, I felt utterly enveloped in radiating warmth, care, and encouragement. And that has never faltered, even in the midst of all the challenges that accompany life in a bustling school setting. This is the most relational school I have ever known. Everywhere I go, I witness people — young and old alike — pausing and stepping out of their lane to tend to the needs of others with a spirit of joy and camaraderie. It fills my heart to be a part of that kind of community — a beloved community, in which everyone can belong and feel deeply respected, appreciated, and supported. We made community and belonging a priority this year, intentionally scheduling monthly events that would give us opportunities to gather and deepen friendships. We relished hearing the tales of days gone by at our inaugural Retired Teachers Luncheon this year. Parenting Perks courses brought parents together and gave them opportunities to learn and talk about topics that were important to them. Parent’s Night Out events were also a hit, as were family events, like our church’s Trunk or Treat celebration, Grandparents Day, and our many other annual traditions. We also made safety and security a priority this year. Our administrative team met with numerous specialists in the field and used their feedback to develop an action plan aimed at maximizing safety without compromising this community’s ability to spend quality time on campus. The biggest boost to our campus security plan came from the overwhelming level of participation in this year’s Live Auction. Giving at this year’s Gala was the biggest it's been in nearly a decade, allowing for a complete overhaul of our gate system with the installation of an additional gate at the entrance with cameras and remote entry capabilities, coupled with improved classroom signage and new carpeting throughout our hallways. We are grateful for the support and involvement of our families in making that initiative a reality.
I am so grateful for the fellowship of this faith-filled family, for the close and trusting partnership that exists between the School and Church, and for the honor of serving this community. Please enjoy reflecting on this magical year as you peruse the pages of this book and know that every time you joined us for Chapel, volunteered at an event, or simply came to celebrate a child’s milestone, you helped build this Beloved Community. And we thank you for that. We thank you for making life at San Jose Episcopal Day School an “earlier heaven” for all of us. God bless,
Sloane Castleman
ANNUAL REPORT 2022-2023
Behind the scenes, we made curriculum review a priority. Every faculty member served on numerous committees, analyzing our academic programs from a historical perspective. From there, they worked collaboratively to develop action plans across all subject areas aimed at moving our practices forward in new and exciting directions. Their time and effort constituted a critical first step toward enhancements that will bless our students for years to come.

Father B ritt SAN JOSE EPISCOPAL CHURCH Dear San Jose Family,
In all my years of writing for Share the Spirit (this issue makes my 18th straight!), I have never once really thought about the name of our prominent publication. This year, the importance of the name seems to me the most important thing. You have chosen San Jose Episcopal for your children’s learning, and as a home for your family, partly or mostly, for the spirit of the place as you either know it or perceive it; depending on if you are a new or returning family. There is a spirit of love and gentleness here. It is unmistakable. It was the hope of our founders in the late 1940’s to establish a school with an atmosphere of “beauty and happiness.” Keep in mind that this was at a time in our nation’s cultural history when almost no one was thinking about schools, or indeed children, in those terms. San Jose attempted to make a sharp contrast with the prevalent idea of children being “seen but not heard” with an effort, from our earliest days, to hear and value the voices of our young students. I am proud that San Jose has stuck to that vision, and I am confident in our future fidelity to that purpose with our current administration and staff. Indeed, our teachers and school leaders epitomize the ideals on which the school was founded.

SAN JOSE EPISCOPAL DAY SCHOOL
But there is an important second act to the meaning of Spirit as we express it. What we do at San Jose is built around the foundation of the Holy Spirit, the very presence of God in our midst and in each person created in the likeness and image of God. We do what we do at San Jose in order to respond to the Holy Spirit and offer our ministry to God and to God’s world. I encourage you to bring your best to the table at San Jose in both senses. Come and be a part of the spirit of love and gentleness that has long distinguished this community as unique. Come also, and worship the Holy Spirit, finding direction, meaning, and purpose for your family’s life together.

Student Council
STUDENT COUNCIL IS COMPRISED OF 4TH, 5TH, AND 6TH GRADERS
The Student Council is made up of a group of students representing the SJEDS community. They are voted upon by their peers, and it is an honor to be selected. Candidates prepare a presentation and campaign poster, then students in 4th through 6th grades vote on the ballot. This year’s Council events included holiday-themed “guess how many in the jar” contests and scavenger hunts with prizes. The Council hosted two Upper School movie nights complete with popcorn and dodgeball, and they brought back seasonal pep rallies. To round out the school year, Council President Abigail Pall emceed the annual Talent Show. We appreciate the hard work and participation of these individuals in completing the duties of Student Council, under the guidance of Mrs. Lauren Barcenas.

CARES AND SHARES CAMPUS CLEAN UP Families came together on a crisp fall morning to give our campus and church grounds a spruce up! After just a few hours of hard work and dedication, the church pews gleamed and shined as if they were brand new, ready to welcome worshippers with open arms. Fresh mulch was laid all around the property, breathing new life into the landscape, while weeds were pulled to unveil a refreshed and rejuvenated campus.
CARING FOR ANIMALS Third Grade collected dog and cat treats for the Jacksonville Humane Society.

Year in Review CROSSING THE BRIDGE The Crossing of the Bridge Ceremony is a significant milestone for our Kindergarten students, marking their transition from preschool to elementary school. As they leave behind the Early Explorers Chapel, they “cross the bridge” and join the larger school community for worship. This symbolic crossing represents the progress and development they have experienced during their preschool years, signifying their readiness for the next chapter of their educational and spiritual journey.

SAN JOSE EPISCOPAL DAY SCHOOL
CROSSroads CROSSroads is our character and spiritual development program, formerly known as Keys to the Kingdom. It provides daily opportunities for students to learn how to navigate life's challenges, relying on God's word like explorers use a compass. Encounters with God's word help students realize that we are all God's children deserving of love and respect. The program culminates at sixth grade graduation, where students receive a compass journal and an engraved compass as lasting reminders of their journey through childhood at SJEDS. These lessons aim to guide their decision-making and foster a spirit of service and love in the wider world.
JSO STOP STATION A new initiative was established with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. Last year, SJEDS became an official JSO Stop Station. The designation brings benefits to both the school and local JSO officers who serve our community. It offers a safe space for officers patrolling our area to park, rest, and complete paperwork, rather than spending long hours confined to their patrol vehicles. Additionally, it fosters a closer relationship between our local JSO, the school community, and church.
FACULTY VS. STUDENT KICKBALL GAME The highly anticipated annual faculty vs. student kickball game exceeded all expectations. Despite the faculty's valiant efforts, they faced a formidable challenge from the spirited sixth-grade team, who ultimately clinched the victory. Throughout the afternoon, true sportsmanship shone brightly, and amidst laughter and camaraderie, the phrase "wait until next year" was playfully mumbled by the faculty, eager to redeem themselves in the future.

Fathers, daughters, and loved ones danced the night away amid breathtaking views at The River Club. The DJ kept the energy flowing with limbo, karaoke, conga lines, and contests. Dinner began with beef tenderloin and pasta stations followed by a grand finale of decadent desserts.
MOMS AND SONS BOWLING Mothers and sons adorned their most vibrant Hawaiianstyled shirts, setting the stage for an afternoon filled with joy, delicious food, and exciting rounds of bowling.
GRANDPARENTS DAY Over 100 grandparents and special friends visited our campus for a special day in their honor. Our honored guests started the morning with a special musical performance led by Kathy Dozier and Katie Bennett. Guests were then invited to explore the student art gallery, expertly curated by Judy Bryan. One of the highlights was the meaningful time spent in the classroom, where they engaged in collaborative and creative projects with their grandchild or friend. As a thoughtful keepsake, a commemorative family photo was mailed to attendees after the event. We were thrilled to host this special occasion, recognizing the indispensable role that these family members and friends play in the lives of our students.

The Fall Festival was a spectacular display of creative costumes, magic shows, a petting zoo and an Early Explorers parade. We extend a special "thank you" to Courtney Stoner Interior Design for their generous sponsorship of this memorable event.
MOVIE NIGHT Upper School Movie Night was full of fun! Attendees played kickball and dodgeball, then settled in for the movie and popcorn. Thank you to Lauren Barcenas and Student Council for hosting.
NEW PLAYGROUND The church and school community gathered with great excitement to celebrate the official unveiling of our brand-new Upper School playground playscape. Father Britt blessed the structure, students, and our gracious benefactors. A group of students sprinkled holy water prepared by Mother Rich onto the equipment. We give thanks for the remarkable generosity of the Caplin family, the Bliss family (Gooding grant), the family of Lora Ann and Reed Brannock, and an anonymous group of San Jose Episcopal Church members, all of whom made this dream a reality.

During pre-planning, a retreat was organized for faculty and staff at the picturesque Camp Weed and Cerveny Conference Center in Live Oak, Florida. The overnight event served as a perfect setting for fostering fellowship, strengthening team bonds, and acquainting colleagues with new additions to the staff. The retreat not only marked the commencement of pre-planning activities but also laid the foundation for an exceptional school year ahead. The retreat was a resounding success as faculty and staff returned to campus feeling refreshed, rejuvenated, and filled with enthusiasm for the upcoming school year.

RETIRED TEACHERS LUNCHEON Over 25 retired and former teachers returned to campus for an afternoon of fellowship and prayer. This inaugural event was meaningful in so many ways. For some of the teachers, they had not been back to a place they loved for more than 20 years. The event commenced with a Chapel Service led by Rev. Sara A. Rich. Head of School Dr. Castleman introduced herself and expressed her deep gratitude for the dedicated professionals who came before us to lay the foundation for the great school that SJEDS is today.

Development
The Power of Participation is a crucial element for any school or organization, and SJEDS experienced its significance firsthand. The collective efforts of parents, alumni, grandparents, trustees, friends, and faculty and staff made a tremendous impact. With your participation, our school achieved remarkable accomplishments, such as the construction of a new Upper School playground and security access control enhancements across campus. The Fund for San Jose reached almost $80,000, proving its importance as tuition alone cannot cover the entire cost of education at San Jose Episcopal Day School. We take pride in reporting 100% participation from our Board of Trustees, Church Vestry, faculty, and staff, with every teacher and staff member committing to The Fund for San Jose before the school year began — a milestone achievement in our history. We extend our gratitude to the Business Partners who have supported our school. Through our Business Partners Program, they not only contribute to our school's success but also promote their own businesses throughout the year. We sincerely thank our long-standing sponsors, including the Nimnicht Family of Dealerships, Vestcor, First Coast Home Pros, Tidewater Homes, Weaver and Stratton Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics, Dopazo Orthodontics, and Normandy Lake Dentistry. We also warmly welcome our newest additions to the SJEDS Business Partner family: Beauclerc Dental, Cowford Cabinetry and Design, and St. Johns Asset Management. Their generous support is greatly appreciated. In March, we held our largest fundraiser, "Celebrate San Jose," which witnessed an incredible level of fun and participation. GROW WITH MKG was the Title Sponsor, and we raised over $94,000, making it one of the most successful fundraisers in our school's history. The paddle raiser during the event alone raised just over $24,000, contributing to the enhancement of our school's access control and overall physical security.
Again, thank you to all for your participation to help our school shine each and every day! With warm regards, Brian Pargman Director of Development & Marketing bpargman@sjeds.org

They represented their team and school with honor, always giving their opponents a hard-fought battle while maintaining respect for the game.
VOLLEYBALL Led by Coach Macy Pargman in her second year, the Bears volleyball team showcased remarkable growth and improvement throughout the season. Their dedication to mastering the fundamentals of the game translated into big victories and a deepened passion for volleyball. With each match, the team demonstrated their commitment to honing skills on the court and were a fun and exciting team to watch. “This was my second year coaching these girls and I loved the energy, enthusiasm and compassion they showed for their teammates,” said Coach Macy.
SOCCER Under the guidance of Coach Ryan Taylor, the Bears soccer team emerged as a formidable force this year. With each game, their skills improved while they embraced the joy of the sport. Coach Taylor expressed deep admiration for his team, stating, “It was an absolute honor to coach such a remarkable group of young athletes who not only displayed remarkable talent but also bonded and grew together throughout the soccer season.” The Bears’ journey was a testament to their dedication and camaraderie, leaving an indelible mark on the field.

ANNUAL REPORT 2022-2023
23
Through our music program, students explore their musical passions and engage with various instruments such as drums, xylophones, and guitars while delving into different genres. This exposure at an early age not only cultivates their love for music but also enhances their critical thinking skills, benefiting their overall academic development. In the past year, students took their annual field trip to watch the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra perform downtown. Also, our talented students had the chance to showcase their musical abilities at several events, including Grandparents Day, the Christmas program, and special Chapel services.
Board of Trustees Dear SJEDS Families, We have completed our first year with Dr. Castleman as the Head of School, and I speak for all of the Trustees in saying we are proud of the accomplishments she and her team have achieved this year. The administrative team Dr. Castleman has assembled is very impressive, and in their first year together, they are functioning as though they have been together for five years. This is a testament to Dr. Castleman’s leadership skills and her ability to bring people together in a collaborative way. While this first year focused on building the core teams and staffing our classrooms appropriately, it also saw us make some large, visible changes to our campus. Through your generous paddle-raiser donations at this year’s Gala Fundraiser, we have been able to invest in and enhance our campus security and add signage outside each classroom for easy identification by first responders. Using additional donations from both individuals and the Lucy B. Gooding Foundation, we were able to update the upper school playground, which was in dire need of a facelift. Lastly, we partnered with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office (JSO) to provide a stop station for officers, allowing them to use our campus as a secure location to complete paperwork and other administrative duties rather than doing so in their cars, which has resulted in a more visible presence of JSO at our campus. You can expect the same type of enhancements and “facelift” to the curriculum and academic rigor at our school. The full curriculum revamp will be a multi-year process, but you should expect to see changes as early as this coming school year. We feel confident that the plan Dr. Castleman and her team have put together will exceed the expectations families have of SJEDS. In addition to academics, you will also notice that enhancements have been made to the religious education program at SJEDS, ensuring we continue to focus on both academic and spiritual education. Thank you to those families that took the time to complete the Parent Survey sent out in early June. Your feedback and opinions are very valuable to us. Thank you for your continued support of our school. Have a safe and wonderful summer.

The Parent Association Dear SJEDS Families, In looking back over the past school year, I am completely amazed at what an incredible year it was for our students, parents, and faculty! Our school had so many wonderful events all of which were made possible by the volunteers (both parents and students) that helped make every single one of them such a great success. From the many P.A. sponsored events, to teacher appreciation activities and various fundraising efforts, we could not have accomplished so much without your assistance. I would like to express my biggest thanks and appreciation to all of you for your support, whether it was volunteering time, making contributions, or pitching in to help our students in the classroom, those efforts helped make it one of the most memorable school years for our students and teachers! SJEDS has been adjusting back to our typical school routines in a postpandemic world. When I think back over the past couple of years, I am so thrilled to see that we can participate in our usual chapel services, gather together in large groups, and sing out loud again! The sense of family within our school community has remained strong in spite of the challenges, and it is this sense of fellowship that is one of the many things that makes our school so special. As we move forward into the new school year, I am so grateful to all of our volunteers and faculty that make the learning experience at SJEDS so exceptional. I also want to give my most sincere thanks to the Parent Association Board for all their hard work over the past year. I am honored to have served as P.A. President, and I look forward to seeing the continued growth of our students, families, and school. Sincerely, Cyndi Hodges

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SJEDS MEMORY? A very simple memory of this magical school was from the time I toured the school. I walked into the lunchroom and saw tomatoes ripening on the kitchen window sill. I felt like somebody really cared enough to make sure even the tomatoes were ripe enough for the school lunch and this made me feel at ease to leave my precious 1st grader to thrive here.

SAN JOSE EPISCOPAL DAY SCHOOL
San Jose Episcopal Day School welcomed back the graduates of the Class of 2017 for a heartwarming tradition that celebrates new beginnings. This unique chapel service, aptly named "Celebrate New Beginnings," has become an annual event for soonto-be high school graduates who graduated from San Jose Episcopal Day School at the end of 6th grade. Following the chapel service, a beautiful reception was hosted by the Nimnicht family, whose son Lee was a member of the SJEDS Class of 2017 and graduated from Episcopal School of Jacksonville last year. The reception was a perfect setting for students, families, teachers, and alumni to come together, share stories, and celebrate the achievements of the graduates. The evening was truly delightful as every graduate shared their cherished SJEDS memories through heartfelt video testimonials. To make the occasion even more special, each graduate was presented with a T-shirt that drew inspiration from their beloved 6th grade class shirt.
