Christmas Concert Thanks

SJ Family Shelter Project

Minimum Day 11:45am Dismissal

Friday night, the SJCS Community was treated to an amazing Christmas concert, featuring student musicians from grades 5-8 and various student, parent, and faculty readers who created a worshipful lessons and carols format that emphasized the worldwide gift of salvation in Christ. Thank you to everyone who participated and to Mrs. Baham for her wonderful leadership of the SJCS music program!

January Open House

Once again SJCS is supporting the San Jose Family Shelter.  The Shelter is looking for donations of bedding and bath items (twin and full sheets, pillows, bath mats, towels and wash cloths).   Although the 4th grade is spearheading this project, all families are invited to participate.  Please bring your donation to room 8 by Friday, December 13.  On Tuesday, December 17, the 4th grade class will personally deliver all the items collected to the Family Shelter and have a guided tour to see exactly how the agency provides help for our community and how our donations will provide for those in need.

Jan 10 First Re-enrollment deadline

On Saturday, January 25, we are hosting our second Open House event of the year. That gives all of our school families a month and a half to invite friends to come and learn about the outstanding experiences we have to offer. Next week, each of you will receive a copy our our new publicity booklet that you can use to share the story of intentional Christian education and irresistible Christian community that’s happening here at SJCS.

Re-enrollment Contracts On Friday afternoon, the re-enrollment contracts for our current families went home with students. If you have multiple children at SJCS, they went home with your youngest sibling. The first deadline to get the best rate on re-enrollment is Friday, January 10.

Pieces of the Puzzle Every year, SJCS holds a financial drive to help us meet our operational expenses. The theme for 2013-14 is Pieces of the Puzzle. You will be receiving information in the mail this week. Please consider how you can help and feel free to share with family and friends who would support our cause as well.

JK/K Christmas Program The JK/K Christmas program is coming up! On Thursday, December 19 the JK/ K students will be performing in a Christmas musical. We will have two performances. (8:45am and 10am). The 8:45am performance will be the allschool Christmas Chapel for SJCS students in grades 1-8. The performance for parents, friends, and family will be held at 10am. Tiger Tracks Christian Home and School Magazine Online

Teacher Tales Check this section each week for exciting stories of teachers doing great things in the classrooms of San Jose Christian School.

As a member of Christian Schools International (CSI), SJCS receives periodic editions of the magazine, Christian Home & School. this link to read the first edition of the year, or stop by the school office for a hard copy. Among other things, this issue features: • Thoughts on learning foreign languages • Studies show the value of Christian education • Good sportsmanship for parents • Book & movie reviews

Recently, Mrs. Nibbelink’s 5th grade class took their learning of colonial history to a new level. Students chose historical figures to research, and each member of the class delivered a speech to the rest of the group to share what they learned. They also created a biographical sketch about each figure and then had to create a scene from the person’s life that illustrated their importance to history. Last week Thursday, the class had an Open House to share their creations with each other. “Students couldn’t use any manufactured materials to build their scene, so they had to be creative about how they were going to make it work. It was fun to see them solve those problems,” said Mrs. Nibbelink. “This year’s speeches were the best ones I’ve ever had doing this activity. The written biography for each figure was short, so the students needed to provide us with more depth and detail in their 2-4 minute speeches. They did a great job.”

January Series Lectures Every January, SJCS serves as a satellite location for a series of lectures from Calvin College. The talks are from renowned speakers and cover a wide range of topics. Hear from an 18-year veteran of the US Senate, a Pulitzer Prize-winning author, the founder of ESPN, and many more. For a full list of speakers and topics, visit www.calvin.edu/january.

Tiger Sports Spotlight Girls Basketball SJCS 40 Achiever 28 The second game of the year proved to be another great win for the girls team. The Tigers were a little rusty from the Thanksgiving Break, missing a bunch of layups that would have meant easy points. The team was down early on the scoreboard, but the girls found their groove in the second half. Alicia chipped in 4 points, and Nia and Milan had 2 each. KK couldn’t be stopped down low, scoring 22 points. EK did a great job. She scored 10 points and gave Achiever’s best player all she could handle by almost fouling her out. Our team defense was successful, considering that we installed it without a practice, and it proved too difficult for the Hawks. SJCS now stands 2-0 on the season. Way to go girls!

Boys Basketball This past week the Boys Basketball Team had a practice game against Achiever Christian Middle School at Church of the Chimes. Achiever took an early lead and never looked back. This was a good test for the Tigers to face taller players in the post and also players that were more aggressive. Dr. J (aka Coach Fung) used this as a teaching opportunity to evaluate, which boys would step up, lead and execute the offense and play tougher defense. Dylan rose to the challenge and covered the entire court, never giving up and inspiring the team. Atheer and Michael played well trying to defend the post. Atheer scored 9 points, Calvin 4 points, Dylan and Matthew 2 points and Joe hit an exciting 3-pointer and ended up with 5 points. All 15 boys played in the game again. We look forward to playing Achiever in a regular game now having time to make adjustments and studying David’s heart and the trust he had in God as he defeated Goliath.
