For Alumni, Friends, and Families of Saint Joseph Central Catholic High School
50 years of royalty! Celebrating Homecoming 2017 1 Fall 2017
1
Dear Alumni, Friends, Supporters, and Current Parents & Students: Have you stopped lately to consider the pride you feel as a person who is an integral part of our Catholic tradition? A person who has benefitted from the presence of the Holy Spirit when engaging wholly in your BHCS connection? Sacred Heart & St. Joe Central Catholic, like all Catholic schools, will always be here for you! I know this to be true because I attended a Catholic grade school and am a proud 1970 graduate of Catholic Central High School in Springfield, Ohio (near Dayton). The CCHS Catholic community is very much like the Bishop Hoffman Catholic School community – many Catholic Central graduates have remained intimately involved – even from afar. After graduating from high school, I served in the U.S. Air Force before attending Arizona State University where I earned a Biological Sciences B.A. degree. I received a Master of Education degree from Miami of Ohio in Secondary Administration. I retired from public education as a successful principal, teacher, and coach. I then continued my teaching career for eight years at my alma mater, Catholic Central, where I also served as an interim principal for one year. Three years ago my wife and I (she’s also a 1970 Springfield Catholic graduate) moved to Perrysburg to be closer to our daughter and her family (our son and his family live in southern Ohio). I am very fortunate to now be part of BHCS. I feel like the SJCC alumni, friends, supporters, parents & students of BHCS are my adopted Catholic family! Let’s share and enjoy the wholeness of the SJCC & Sacred Heart spirit as we read this issue of “The Voice.” Always know that we are “One for All & All for One”! Together we help God’s children grow, David Perin Superintendent BHCS Principal SJCC
Many Thanks!
The Sacred Heart Campus was recently updated with all new carpet in the classrooms, hallways and office! The majority of the carpet was provided by the BHCS PTO! Bishop Hoffman Catholic School applied for and was awarded a grant from the Sandusky County Communities Foundation Inc. which enabled us to finish the project. We are extremely grateful for the support we receive from the community! Pictured receiving the check are Sacred Heart Campus principal, Mrs. Ann Whitfield, Sandusky County Communities Foundation Inc. board chair, Mr. Tom Bowlus, and Former BHCS Superintendent, Mr. Tim Cullen.
On the Cover
SJCC proudly celebrated its 50th Homecoming. The 2017 Queen and King, Miranda Wammes and Ross Snyder, were named at the annual Homecoming assembly. The first Queen and King, Cathy Eberly and Joe Hotz were crowned in 1968. As you can see by our cover, the proud Homecoming tradition at SJCC has continued throughout the years. The pictures on the cover represent Homecoming from every ten years from 1968 to the present. Can you identify each ten year Homecoming picture for the six decades represented? HINT: Which picture looks most like 1968?! Our SJCC guidance counselor, Cori (Bruchs) Foos is also on the cover!

Fall Sports Wrap Up With 13 seniors, the football team went into the season with high hopes. Although they didn’t win as many games as they hoped, it was a still a memorable season. The boys finished with a 3-7 record. The varsity girls’ volleyball team had a successful season, finishing with a winning record of 13-10. Seniors Brooke Casperson, Michelle Hang, Callie Kelbley, Katie Kuss, Belle Michael, Miranda Wammes, and Adrienne Wehring are sure to be missed next season. Losing eight seniors led to a difficult season for the girls’ tennis team. The girls, led by senior Abby Chlosta, showed great improvement throughout the season but did not have the numbers to win any matches. A group of talented underclassmen led the boys’ golf squad this season. The team finished second in the league and sophomore Lance Emrich made it all the way to the District competition. With every member of the team returning next season the team should be even stronger. With new advisor Celina Rodriguez, the cheerleaders were off to a great start to their season. Seniors Abby Chlosta, Katie Kuss, and Elizabeth Wooten led the squad. Many girls will be returning next season with talent, new ideas, and the promise of another great year. The cross country team was also a young group of athletes but this did not stop them from having a successful season. The boys’ team did well in many meets, finishing 5th in the District. Individually, both Sarah E. Molyet and Austin Michael made it all the way to the Regional meet. Garrett Michael

Bible Stories Artist Beth (Sidell) Sage ‘80 creates beautiful murals for Sacred Heart Campus
T
his has been one of the most emotional projects that I have ever worked on. Sacred Heart is where my seven siblings and myself all went to school through the 8th grade. My dad was the football and track coach for years and my mom has always been an active member at Sacred Heart as well. I had the pleasure of returning to this wonderful school to share some of my creativity...but oh, how returning has touched my heart in so many ways... My Dad passed away 10 years ago, and there isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t miss him. On the very first day of this project, before I left for home, I took a little visit to the gymnasium; the place where long hours of track conditioning happened every spring...and there I stood, some 45 years later, in the middle of the large room and envisioned my strong, caring, “bigger than life” father leading all of the exercises, belting out the cadence for all of us young, impressionable kids to follow. I swear I could see and hear him up there on that old stage...I sure could feel him all around that empty room. Part of me missed him even more, but another part felt so comforted. I’ve always wanted to have an opportunity to paint a realistic version of Jesus in a mural. Pretty neat that I had the opportunity at the same place where I first learned about Jesus (besides from my parents) some 50 years ago. I’ve painted Jesus several times as if he were in a child’s story book, but it just isn’t the same. While I worked on the final mural at Sacred Heart (the wall closest to the gymnasium and my memories of Dad) I decided to take a chance on myself and see if I could create my own image of Jesus. I’m sure He is a million times more beautiful than anything I could ever paint, but the most amazing thing happened after I had completely finished. I packed up all of my supplies, ready to head for the door...when I turned the final sets of lights out, everything went dark...except the image of Jesus...please look at the mural closely. His light stays on. A huge thank you to the entire Bishop Hoffman Catholic School for supporting this project.
