Annual Fund 15 Kicks Off

With the fall season comes the start of school and the beginning of the SJCC Annual Fund Drive. The past 14 years of annual fund drives have generated over $1,500,000. These funds have supported SJCC in areas of student religious retreats, technology, the science department, faculty/staff salaries and development. This dollar amount reflects the generosity of SJCC alumni and friends but in no way measures the talent or amount of volunteer time spent working in the building or on projects outside of SJCC such as the Naderer Sports Complex and the Coleman Wrestling Building. We are blessed to have so many loyal, caring alumni and friends who support SJCC. The 2008-2009 Annual Fund 15 is being chaired by Jim Yeager ‘70 and Jerry Freeh ‘47. How foutunate SJCC is to once again have their leadership. This year’s goal is $150,000. Your annual gift helps fill the “Gap” between tuition and the actual cost to educate a child. The current 2008-2009 School Year figures are: Cost to educate one student (prior year) $6,456 Tuition-if active parish member $4,050 Tuition “Gap” per student $2,406 The $2,406 “Gap” per student must be provided through the generosity of parish subsidy, fundraisers, and financial donors in order to continue the legacy of SJCC. The cost to educate does not include Student Services which are athletics, cafeteria, development, public relations, school publications, and capital improvements. The hard work of the SJCC faculty and staff is evident in the following statistics of the 2008 seniors and sophomores (class of 2010)

The senior class of 2008 was offered $989,000 in scholarships and 98% went on to higher education. SJCC Sophomores OGT results Best in the Area Three Years in a Row! Reading 98% Passed Writing 100% Passed Math 98% Passed Science 96% Passed Social Studies 96% Passed 93% OF SJCC SOPHOMORES PASSED ALL FIVE TESTS 86% of Toledo Diocese Sophomores passed all five tests 67% of Ohio Sophomores passed all five tests

Capital Campaign Nears Successful Completion This year we celebrate the final phase of our Generations of Commitment Capital Campaign knowing that the goal of $2 million was surpassed! Those donors who made a five-year commitment to SJCC have completed their pledge or will complete it by the end of this school year. The campaign addressed creating endowed and annual tuition assistance scholarships, increasing the faculty & staff endowment and building improvements. 27 named endowed scholarships were formed with over $668,138 donated, $50,000 was donated to the general scholarship endowment and another $155,500 was donated to annual scholarships. This 2008-2009 school year 53 families were helped, a total of 60 students, with $50,540 in tuition scholarships. Faculty/staff endowment saw an increase of $49,500. This amount was donated to the capital campaign and placed in the “Light of Christ” Faculty and Staff Endowment Fund. Income from this endowment helps SJCC maintain salaries at 80% of the public schools. While the first two areas were successfully completed, the third area, building improvements, needed an additional $200,000 to replace the aged heating and ventilation system, build the cafeteria concession stand, create new office space and make electrical upgrades. To properly close our capital campaign we are asking annual fund donors to consider increasing their contribution this year. All funds donated above the Annual Fund goal will go toward retiring the $200,000 loan. If you choose, you can designate an amount to go directly to the loan reduction. SJCC cannot thank the Capital Campaign Steering Committee enough for their leadership and dedication with the first ever Capital Campaign. Tim Paradiso ‘77, the Campaign Chairman truly is an example of giving back. Tim spent countless hours in meetings and personal contacts and spoke this summer at the wrap up celebration. Fr. Earl Loeffler, Honorary Chair made many trips to Fremont, along with the out of state meetings. Jerry Wasserman ‘72, Jim Hoffman ‘67, Hal Hawk, Tom Dudley, Bob McCartney, Sue (Moyer ‘74) Barbour make up the rest of the Campaign Steering Committee. They spent many hours in meetings to help SJCC reach their goals. Once again thank you for your support and dedication.

PAGE 2 From the Principal Greetings, It’s hard to believe this is my twelfth year as principal of SJCC and that I celebrated my 30th class reunion this past August. It seems like just yesterday that I was walking these halls as a student. This year has started off great and once again we have a tremendous student body. We have 244 students and welcome 58 new freshmen into our SJCC family. In this edition of The Voice, we recognize and thank all the generous alumni and friends who donated to last year’s annual fund. We are truly grateful to these benefactors and everyone who helped support St. Joseph Central Catholic in any way this past school year. We could not provide such an excellent Catholic education if it weren’t for all of your support. In closing, I want to let you know that you and your families are in our prayers. Please keep SJCC in your prayers and let me know if there is ever anything that we can do for you. May God bless you and your families. GO STREAKS! Mike Gabel Principal

SJCC VOICES The Voice Salutes....Kevin Yeckley By: Chris Liebold

I have had the privilege to know Mr. Yeckley for the past five years. Mr. Yeckley has been very good to me, as he has been to all of us. His concern and respect for us has allowed us to trust him. We appreciate his care, and we respect him greatly. Most of us know that you are an SJCC alumnus. What did you do in high school? What are your fondest memories? I graduated from SJCC in 1986 and have many friendships dating back to my high school days. Many of these friendships I have maintained. Some of my proudest memories include being chosen to go to Buckeye Boys State in my junior year, and I am also very proud of making the state football playoff my senior year. When did you start teaching at SJCC? My first teaching experience came at Lutz Elementary where I taught 6th grade. My first school year at SJCC was in 19961997. At that time I counseled 8th, 9th, and 10th grades. I also taught Pre-Algebra and was the Assistant Varsity Football coach and the Assistant Varsity Baseball coach.

The Yeckley Family-Back row: Kayla, Jolie, Zach Front Row: Kevin, Jake

Many of us have noticed you on the sidelines for football and baseball. When did you first start coaching? I first started coaching youth football in 1991, and have coached seventeen years helping young kids develop the fundamentals of football. I have also been an assistant high school football coach for nine years and baseball coach for three. What led to your decision to become the varsity baseball coach, and how was your inaugural season? I have always thought about coaching but was waiting for my kids to be a bit closer to entering the program. My sons will be in high school soon enough, and I enjoy coaching kids no matter what. Over all, my first season was full of fun, and I had a great group of kids. My proudest moment was winning the MAL title.

St. Joseph Central Catholic High School

Where did you go to college, and what was your college experience like? I went to the University of Toledo where I received my undergraduate degree in Elementary Education. I experienced wonderful personal growth throughout my college years . I really had to learn to apply myself and was able to “grow up”. I later attained my Masters degree in School Counseling from Heidelberg College, Tiffin.

Kassie Kuzma, SJCC senior, for her generous donation of frozen “Mr. Mistys” to the marching band before the Labor Day Parade. Master’s Craft/Tom Hoelzle-for all of his time and effort resurfacing the gym floor, helping him were Tom Babione, Mike Wasserman and Tom Guyer. Chuck Nester for cutting out the football helmet yard signs for the football players. “Crazy Bob” Turner for scaring the “bejesus” out of the band at the Haunted Hydro this year. John Wasserman for making the wooden crosses for the Kairos Retreat.

Here at SJCC we are very proud of our faculty and staff. They go above and beyond their jobs to support and care for your children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Without them SJCC wouldn’t be the great institution it is today. We salute these fine men and women in this special feature because we would like to introduce them to you and acknowledge their dedication to SJCC. Mike Gabel, Principal

Thank You...

How would you summarize your career at SJCC so far? I love coming to work each and every day; it is very enjoyable for me. Working with the great kids here is very rewarding. We truly have good young people, and I enjoy seeing them reach for their dreams.

ALUMNI HIGHLIGHTS St. Joe Family Legacy

The first Thursday of October marks the 50th year Mayle twins Rita Hershey and Rody Reineck have volunteered in the St. Joe cafeteria. This year is very special for Rita as her great granddaughter, Alayna, (Ruthie Caputo’s granddaughter) is in St. Joe pre-school. “I plan to put a Hershey candy kiss by her place to welcome her,” said Rita proudly. Of course their own children and grandchildren fondly

remember when they were slipped an extra cheese stick or cookie,” volunteered daughter Kathy Reineck Boukissen. Rita and Rody (Rosalyn) graduated from St. Joseph High School in 1938. Their spouses Willard Hershey and Barney (Bernard) both were 1937 grads. The Hersheys had four children Ruthie Caputo ‘64, Ken ‘67, Jack ‘69 and Debbie Krynock ‘71. The Reinecks had

six Bob ‘64, Dick ‘66, Judy Koebel ‘71, Peg Autullo ‘73, Kathy Boukissen ‘76 and Mary Jean Carmack ‘77. All ten graduated from St. Joseph High School and one, Dick Reineck, has taught math there for 37 years! Three of Rita’s grandchildren and 14 of Rody’s grandchildren graduated from SJCC. Rita and Rody, fondly known as “The Twinkies” by both family and friends, celebrated their 88th birthdays Sept. 10. In August they attended the annual Twins Days Festival at Twinsburg, OH, where they received gold medals for being the oldest twins attending and the Most Look-A-Like for ages 61 and older. Looking alike has its advantages. It was told that when their children and grandchildren were young it was easy to baby sit for each other as the children/ grandchildren never knew the difference! NOTE—If you know of a St. Joe Family Legacy you would like highlighted in an issue of “The Voice” e-mail Sue Berryman at sberryman@streaks.net

Class of 1958 Celebrates

The Class of 1958 held their 50th reunion August 9 at the Fremont Country Club. One hundred attended including 65 of the 88 graduates, spouses, and three special guests, classmate Sr. Julia Hutchison, Coach Robert Smith, and Fr. Earl Loeffler. Loeffler celebrated Mass and classmate Deacon George Miller assisted. A poster honoring ten deceased class members was displayed along with other memorabilia. A silent auction was held for a floral arrangement donated by classmate, Ann (Miller) Kalkines who could not attend. The top bidder was Tom Reineck and the money was donated to the SJCC window fund. Prizes were awarded for the 1st, 50th, and 58th reservation received. The reunion weekend began on Friday with many classmates meeting at The Depot to reminisce. Sunday they gathered for brunch at the Moose. As of this writing the class raised $2,835 for new windows. At the reunion it was decided to hold a yearly luncheon. July 29 is the date for next year. Watch for more information upcoming issues of the Voice or on the SJCC website, fremontstjoe.org.

SPORTS Coming Back

By John Fatica One of the amazing things about SJCC is the draw it has to its alumni to come back and be involved in the school. One way this is exhibited is through the number of alumni that have returned to the school to be a head coach, advisor or band director. Of the 17 sports at SJCC, over two-thirds of them are coached by former students. From a 1961 to a 2000 graduate, the SJCC pride still lives with these people. Connie Coleman, Class of 1961 - Wrestling Matmaid Advisor, began advising 1979-80 Gary Geller Class of 1969 - Girls Basketball Coach, began coaching in 1981-82. “I think when I first started coaching girls I treated them like girls. Now I treat them like athletes.” Roger Rhoad, Class of 1973 - Bowling Coach, began coaching in 1999-2000. Mark Boukissen, Class of 1974 - Softball Coach, began coaching in 2008 Bill Burkett, Class of 1975 - Band Director, began in 2001. Mary (Poorman) Mayle, Class of 1977 - Cheerleading Advisor, began in 1999. Mike Gabel, Class of 1978 - Boys Basketball Coach, began coaching in 1991- 1992. “Coaching basketball gives me two hours where I can forget about what’s going on at the school and focus on coaching the boys.” Kevin Yeckley, Class of 1986 - Baseball Coach, began coaching in 2008. “I would say the best part of my first year was the excitement and enthusiasm that these kids had that I didn’t have to instill in them which led to the success we had.” Todd Drusback, Class of 1990 - Football Coach, began coaching in 2006. “The game is much more complex…You have to keep it simple enough so it doesn’t confuse the players.” Jamie (Chapman) Gilbert, Class of 1996 - Cross Country Coach, began coaching in 2002. “The coaches I had while at SJCC taught me inner strength and a love for running. They also created an extended family for me. I hope to pass this tradition on as a way of saying thanks to the coaches who were important to me.” Paul Grahl, Class of 1997 - Track Coach, began coaching in 2004. Scott Knisley, Class of 2000 - Boys Tennis Coach, began coaching in 2006

Steve Llewellyn took over as head soccer coach for SJCC. He brings much experience from coaching Fremont Emeralds Club teams. The team currently stands at 3-5-1. After a rough start (0-4-1 in their first five games), the team won three of its last four contests. T h e w i n s i n c l u d e Ti ff i n Columbian (3-2), Upper Sandusky (4-3) and a 3-0 shutout of Seneca East. Their one loss in that stretch was a 1-0 defeat at Mohawk in which Mohawk scored the only goal with less than 30 seconds left in the match.

Cross Country

This year’s boys cross country has performed well considering there were not enough to comprise a team at the end of last year. At the Norm Bray Invite in Fremont, the boys were 8th of 17 teams. Junior Josh Schiets was 21st and sophomore Matt Meyer was 30th to pace the team. The Streaks were 3rd at the NWOCSA Meet. Schiets, Meyer, and senior Max Celek finished 9th, 10th and 11th, respectively. At the Tiffin Carnival, Meyer finished 112th and the team was 34th of 45 teams in their Division III race. At the Lakota Invite, Celek finished 16th to lead the team to a 5th place finish. For the girls, sophomore Danielle Molyet has been the team’s most consistent performer. At the Norm Bray, senior Leslie Celek finished 47th and Molyet was 52 nd as the team finished 12th. At the NWOCSA, Molyet was 8th and senior Lauren Michael 10th as the team finished 4th out of six teams. Molyet finished 134th at the Tiffin Carnival and the team was 34th of 50 teams in their race. Molyet again led the team at the Lakota Invite, finishing 24th. The team was 7th out of 15 schools.

Girl’s Tennis

The SJCC girls tennis team is off to a 5-6 start under first-year coaches Liz Pietrykowski and Lily Walters. They also won the NWOCSA tournament. Wins have come over Oak Harbor, St. Mary’s, Calvert, Sandusky, and Archbold. The team is senior-laden, as all three single’s players and the top doubles team are all seniors. Marisa Culbert is 6-5 at No. 1 singles, Maddie Beck is 4-7 at No. 2 singles and Heather Miller is 4-2 at No. 3 singles. Claire Pietrykowski and Carly Jenkins are 3-3 at No. 1 doubles, but each has registered three other victories playing singles or paired with other doubles partners. Doubles combinations were switched often as a few players missed time due to illness early in the season, but now the girls are settling into their positions and are looking forward to a good run at sectionals.

Football

The SJCC football team is off to a 3-1 start this season. The Streaks opened the season with a 46-13 victory over Cardinal Stritch at Harmon Stadium. Senior Jake Kusmer rushed for 222 yards and scored four TDs. Sophomore quarterback Ben Zyski passed for 163 yards and a touchdown. In week two, SJCC survived a late scare to beat Sandusky St. Mary’s 13-7. After Zyski ran for the go-ahead score in the 4th quarter, the Streaks held off a late drive by the Panthers to win. After St. Mary’s drove down the field in the closing minute, sophomore Brant Reardon intercepted a pass on the 3-yard line with 12 seconds left to seal the victory. Kusmer ran for 75 yards and a TD, Zyski threw for 138 yards, and junior Garrett Walker led the team with 60 receiving yards. SJCC lost a heart-breaker in overtime, 31-28 to Ayersvile in week three. The Streaks couldn’t stop Ayersville’s All-State running back Anthony King, as he ran for 313 yards and four scores. But the Streaks battled to send the game to overtime before losing. Zyski threw for 298 yards and three TDs. Kusmer had 107 total yards and a touchdown. Walker and junior Sean Brawley had 110 and 65 yards receiving and a touchdown each. The team rebounded with a strong performance at St. Wendelin, resulting in a 20-6 victory. After being down 0-6 early and battling terrible weather conditions, the Streaks rallied to take a 20-6 lead at halftime. In the second half they went to a conservative game plan to preserve the win. Kusmer rushed for 109 yards and a touchdown, Walker had 110 yards receiving and a touchdown, and Zyski threw for 370 yards and two scores.

Volleyball

The SJCC volleyball team also has a new coach for the 2008 season. Erica Dashner, who played collegiately at Xavier University, takes over the program this year. The team was 5-3 early in the season, losing to Margaretta and Calvert, but beating Sandusky St. Mary’s, Danbury, Bettsville and North Baltimore. The Lady Streaks also finished second at the New Riegel Quad tournament, beating Fostoria High and losing to New Riegel. In the wins over Danbury and Bettsville, the team only gave up 23 and 20 total points in 3-game sweeps of each school. The loss to Calvert was very close and hard-fought with scores of 23-25, 19-25 and 24-26. Senior Jenna Swint is leading the team averaging over 27 assists per match. Senior Ashley Overmyer is averaging 11 kills per match, and seniors Abby and Lindsay Crockett are each averaging about 18 digs per match.
