The Annual Report

St Joseph High School

CommuniquĂŠ

2012

From the President

William Fitzgerald, M.Div., Ph.D.

“May you live in interesting times,”

goes the ambiguous Chinese proverb. With the drums of the national election in the air, sabers rattling in the Mideast, and the economy jittery as a squirrel in a snowstorm, one can easily be unsure of one’s footing--unless you keep your eye on the horizon. And our horizon at St Joe’s is rising. Half way through our 50th anniversary, we begin to shift our attention from what was to what is yet to come. On Sunday, the 2nd of December, from 1:00 to 4:00p, we invite you all to the Blessing and Ribbon Cutting ceremony of the Robert & Maureen O’Keefe Academic Center. It is a must see. The center is a statement in concrete of our confidence in our future. The O’Keefe Center will change the way we teach, or more importantly, the way we learn. Presently, we are fully enrolled. At 835 students, every classroom is in use every hour of every day. Last year, 198 seniors won for themselves over $12,250,000 in renewable grants and scholarships to many of the finest universities around the country. We are currently improving our college preparatory programs to ensure our curriculum and teaching resources provide the best in academic instruction. This month, we begin a comprehensive long range planning process to ensure St Joseph High flourishes throughout the coming years. The process will consult with all the groups that make up the St Joe’s family through either focus groups or surveys. We hope, if called upon, you will participate. Meanwhile, we hope you will enjoy this edition of the Communiqué, which takes a look at the faces and traditions that are the bedrock of our confidence. Thanks to all who are making this particular year so special. pictured above: Dr Fitzgerald with 2012 graduates Sam Russell and Student Body President Matt Erdos. In the background, construction continues on the Robert & Maureen O’Keefe Center.

From the Principal Ken Mayo, M.A.R.S.

What happens next? “….Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus. But when he saw how [strong] the wind was he became frightened; and, beginning to sink, he cried out ‘Lord, save me!’” Mt. 14, 29 – 30 We at St Joe’s are privileged. Privileged heirs of the rich tradition handed on to us. A tradition of faith, through which St Joe’s has sent an extraordinary number of young men on to serve the Catholics of Fairfield County as Diocesan priests, and many young women have dedicated their lives to serving God as professed Religious. A tradition of service, which has, and continues to inspire many of our students to far exceed the hours required for graduation. Annually, our students engage in tens of thousands of hours in active service to others, and I continue to be astounded by the generosity of our entire community towards those in special need. A tradition of athletic prowess and success, which has not only earned us state-wide, regional and national recognition, but has enabled all participants to learn valuable life lessons and skills. A tradition of academic rigor, which has provided our students with the foundation needed to thrive at the most competitive Colleges and Universities, and challenges every student to develop the skills they will need to adapt to whatever the future holds. We don’t know what will happen next, but I know our graduates will be well prepared to help shape the future, and willing to take on the responsibility. And so we steer purposefully into the unknown, confident that our tradition, rooted in our faith, will buoy us when we are buffeted by whatever winds await us. “Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and caught him, and said to him, ‘O you of little faith, why did you doubt?’” Mt. 14, 31

Around Campus From Athletics

Jim Olayos, Head of Athletics

The year 2011-2012 was another Championship year for St Joseph High School Athletics. Basketball was victorious in the Class LL championship with a 62-54 victory over Hillhouse High School. The boys basketball back-to-back championship was Coach Vito Montelli’s eleventh state championship. This championship was bittersweet as Coach Montelli announced his retirement from coaching after 50 years of a legendary career. With nine State championships in four years and the prospects of further success this year, St Joseph Athletics continues to be a beacon of excellence in the State. As this year promises to be another exciting year, we hope you can visit the campus to enjoy an event sometime soon. Congratulatory Notes: Joe Izzo, awarded CHSCA Coach of the Year Vito Montelli, awarded CT Post Coach of the Year Jeff Babineau, awarded FCIAC Coach of the Year

From the Office of College and Guidance Counseling

Kristina Vaios, Counselor

The College and Counseling Services Department is excited to announce their new Director Karrie Sullivan. Karrie comes to St Joseph High School with an extensive background in admissions counseling. Since before school started, the office has been filled with students and their families eager to meet with their counselor to begin the college application process. With regular visits from colleges and universities from the Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern regions, we are averaging 3 to 4 college visits per day, with several students in attendance at each session. These visits give students the opportunity to meet with the college representative who will be reading their application and be able to ask any questions regarding the school. While in the Office of College and Counseling Services there is a strong emphasis on college, we still complete a comprehensive school counseling curriculum where we meet with all students and work with them on Naviance Family Connection as well as meet with students individually to attend to their personal needs. Our counselors: Ann Branca, Jack Nogueira, Kristina Vaios, Karrie Sullivan, Megan Baird the Director of the College Bound Enrichment Program, and Kathleen Seperack, our social worker, look forward to working with you and your students!

From Admissions Peg Marino ‘71, Director of Admissions

The Admissions Office is at it again, visiting partner schools in Trumbull, Shelton, Stratford, and Bridgeport, Milford and Monroe and attending High School Fairs at night in Bridgeport, Newtown, Norwalk, and Milford. Our Director of Admissions, a faculty or staff member, and three student ambassadors go on each visit to speak about the benefits of a St Joseph education. Our Ambassadors are by far the best representatives for our school and do a great job of showcasing all that is excellent in education at St Joe’s. Parents also help spread the message through word of mouth with friends, families, and co-workers. At Back to School Night, 75 outdoor signs advertising Open House were picked up by parents. You can already see our signs in Trumbull, Milford, Fairfield, Shelton and Stratford, and as far afield as Oxford.

From Campus Ministry

Recruitment efforts don’t stop with these visits. Advertising is done through print (newspapers and parish bulletins), posters, and radio (ads running on WEBE/WICC, WSHU and WCUM) as well. Much advertising is done through social media as well. The online application process was reviewed at the end of last year and revisions have been made and implemented. The Academic Center is nearly completed and faculty and students alike are enthusiastic about this addition to the campus and the educational benefits it will offer to all of our constituents. The front of the building has been transformed and is absolutely beautiful. Students and faculty alike are eager to start using the new facilities which will enhance instruction for years to come It’s an exciting 50th year at St Joe’s, and a great time to be part of the St Joseph Community. Visit our newly improved campus, and experience what sets St Joseph apart from other schools.

Father Mike Novajosky ‘01, Spiritual Director

Faith is dynamic, always looking back to the our Lord’s Death and Resurrection, while also peering ahead toward a better existence on Earth and an eternal dwelling in Heaven. In 2012-2013, St Joseph High School looks back at fifty years as a community of faith, while also looking forward as change and transformation abounds. Last year I made weekly visits to my Alma Mater to begin to establish a presence in the community. The small presence has transformed to a new role as Spiritual Director this year, as Fr Chris Samele moves to active parish ministry. Together with Sr Gaby, Director of Campus Ministry, I plan to foster the Catholic faith among the school community. The school continues its tradition of service but this year begins a new approach and understanding of that mission, as a familiar face, Ms Melissa Stunkel, becomes the new Coordinator of Student Service. The campus has undergone a physical transformation with the addition of a new Academic Center. Part of the renovation includes a splendid new entrance to the Alumni Chapel that provides a deserving prominence to this sacred space. The new doors to the Chapel will encourage a visit inside but also will allow others to see the foundation, cause and reason for our community’s faith and service at St Joseph High School as students and faculty gather to worship at Holy Mass, receive grace and forgiveness in Reconciliation and simply praise our Lord in Adoration. It was during my Senior year at St Joe’s that I first truly considered a calling to the priesthood. As the whole Church examines Her faith during this Year of Faith and desires to spread the Gospel anew, the new doors of the Alumni Chapel will invite the students to a contemplation of their calling as Christians and challenge them to respond with lives of faith.

Hollywood Called... And we answered!

by Kaity O’Keefe ‘07

I was so pleased to join my family in celebrating my alma mater at the St Joseph High School 50th Anniversary Gala this past June. I felt right at home as I passed under the maroon and gold arches and greeted so many familiar faces. A smile and laugh from Mr Eng, a joke from Doc and a hug from Mrs Marino – yes, exactly how I remembered St Joe’s. The hard work and dedication from the Gala committee was apparent and I was sure that I was in for a splendid evening. But just as I had left St Joe’s in 2007, gifted with much more than my freshman self had expected, I left the gala that evening the winner of a treasure that was beyond my wildest dreams. One of my favorite television series is the Showtime hit, Weeds. My delight at seeing the ‘Hollywood is Calling’ auction prize and its description is inexpressible... but I’ll try. I laughed, I cried, I jumped up and down, I excitedly implied to Mom, Dad, my grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and anybody else who was in the vicinity how this was sure to be my big break. Of course, the walk-on role and its promise of celebrity had to be won first. After a very tense back-and-forth during the live auction, there was more laughing, more crying and jumping up and down – and I was the extremely fortunate recipient of this priceless prize. Mom and I flew out to LA a few weeks later. The morning after our arrival we were chauffeured to set by none other than Kevin Nealon ‘71, himself – the first of a seemingly endless list of extra perks gifted to us. Everybody greeted us warmly, we were treated to a behind-the-scenes tour of the Universal lot and an amazing breakfast with Kevin and the crew. We ended up spending the whole day on set (helloooooo craft services table) and everybody we met could not have been nicer. When the time came for my actual walk-on I became a bit nervous but was cheered on by all the new friends I had made. Finally, the time came to bid our adieus and our good friend Kevin dropped us back off at the hotel replete with swag from the set – Day One had been a huge success. Day Two began with a morning of touristy traipsing around Hollywood before it was time for Mom and I to go visit Jay Leno and his guests on the Tonight Show, Dana Carvey and Nicki Minaj. We were welcomed to the green room to relax before being shown to our prime seats. After a hilarious and wild 90-minute taping, we were called back to the green room to meet Jay and take a few photos. Exhilarated, yet exhausted, we made our way back to the hotel to recap over a fantastic finale dinner. Mom’s favorite part of the trip was hanging out with her new best friend, Kevin, and chatting it up with the producers and director of Weeds; my favorite part was absorbing all the back end and hard work that goes into creating the glitz and glam you see on television. Dad often reminds me that the St Joe’s motto, Privilege and Responsibility, is more than just words – it’s a reminder of how you should live your life. After my time at St Joe’s, the words do resonate more than just their literal definitions within me. Privilege and Responsibility invokes a feeling of do-good, camaraderie and going above and beyond what is expected to help out others or just make their days a little bit brighter. I am so privileged to have attended St Joe’s, to have met the people who have shaped my life and to have embarked upon the wonderful series of events that ultimately allowed me to go on this unforgettable experience. The privileges I have been granted command responsibility – to share my good fortune and give back. Our motto will be a lifelong guide for me and I will be eternally grateful for all things St Joe’s. My sincerest thank you to the Gala Committee, my St Joe’s family, Kevin Nealon and especially my parents – for both my Hollywood experience and my St Joe’s experience. Pictured above, right: Karen O’Keefe, Kevin Nealon ‘71 and Kaity O’Keefe ‘07 pose on the set of Weeds. Top left: Karen trying to extricate herself from mob boss, Don Corleone, known also as Marlon Brando. Bottom Left: Kaity hitting the lineup for being a drama queen. ‘Hollywood is Calling’ certainly was a weekend to remember! 16 communiqué 2012 2011

Many friends have found comfort during times of bereavement by requesting that donations be made to St Joseph High school in lieu of flowers. Donations made in memory of a loved one can be a very meaningful way of insuring that the goodness of the deceased person will live on through the students of St Joseph High School. Please include in the obituary: “Donations may be made in lieu of flowers to St Joseph High School Scholarship Fund, 2320 Huntington Turnpike, Trumbull, CT 06611.” We will acknowledge all gifts to the donors and upon request, will provide special memorial envelopes to the funeral home for donor use. “Knowledge”

I am very pleased to report to the St Joseph High School community that the Robert & Maureen O’Keefe Academic Center is nearing completion. This new building stands as a testament, not only to the faith and generosity of the O’Keefe family and of all of the donors and benefactors who helped make this vision a reality, but also to the mission of St Joseph High School for the next 50 years. St Thomas More has said, “Education is not the piling on of learning, information, data, facts, skills, or abilities - that’s training or instruction - but is rather making visible what is hidden as a seed.” The goal of the new Academic Center is to provide “knowledge” to our students. A place for study, for the exchange of ideas, to explore the world, and yes, a place to receive an education. The Academic Center will provide our students with the opportunity to acquire knowledge - to succeed in college, to live their faith and to help the less fortunate. At graduation this year I reported that our seniors were awarded scholarships and grants of over $12,250,000. In addition to their academic achievements, our students provided countless hours of community service and raised thousands for charitable causes. All these achievements are possible because of the financial support of our alumni, which is added to the generous support received from our benefactors and friends. I urge each alumnus to invest in the knowledge that is St Joseph High School by contributing generously to the Academic Center Campaign and to the Annual Fund. St Joseph High School remains committed to achieving its mission--- to be the premier Catholic college preparatory high school in Southern Connecticut. Be assured that St Joseph High School strives each day to fulfill its mission to provide knowledge and to promote the gospel values. Ora Pro Nobis St. Joseph,

Patrick J. Lapera, Esq. Chair, Advisory Board of Directors Parent of Anne ’08 and Patricia ‘05
