Many in Colonial America attempted to cultivate grapes for wine in the New World None of them succeeded until James Dufour In 1799, Dufour established this vineyard on the Kentucky River, originally consisting of 633 acres surveyed by American pioneer Daniel Boone Through his success, he was able to share vines with aspiring winemakers throughout early America, unknowingly establishing provenance for American wine Dufour’s wine would also go on to be enjoyed by United States Presidents Thomas Jefferson and James Madison
The legacy of Dufour’s vineyard was dormant for two centuries before being discovered and revived by Thomas Beall III Beall was initially enchanted by the property’s beauty when he purchased it in 1994. After many discoveries and ample research, Beall petitioned the National Park Service to include The First Vineyard on the National Register of Historic Places. His petition was granted after a rigorous review process The First Vineyard has been officially recognized as America’s first commercial vineyard since 2015
