PROJECTEN 2011

2

KENIA Marianne center CIVS-SR 2 Dates: permanent SOCIAL 15 volunteers 50+ Partner Over 2.9 million Kenyans face these extra challenges in their lives today, but many Kenyans still associate mentally disabled people with black magic and witchcraft. Little has been done to combat this stigmatization. Most people with a mental disability have a mild to moderate mental retardation. They can learn and are capable of developing skills throughout their lives. Their wide range of talents can be discovered at any moment in their childhood. Marianne Center was therefore established in the year 2010 to focus on people with a mild or moderate mental disability from the age of 16 till 50 years. The training center has given the disabled and their parents hope for a better future. Currently, the centre has 38 students. The classes are divided according to the student’s abilities varying from Down-Syndrome to Autism. The (young) adults are trained in basic skills of life, like vocational and income generating activities. At the end of the training their capabilities will be assessed and they will be attached to an employer according to their skills were they learn and develop further. Work Project Vision To place people with a mental disability back in society and create awareness about their potential among Kenyans, as a result they will be accepted and loved.
