N E X T Commercial Real Estate & Project Management

The NEXT project was a Steelcase ran competition challenging students to design a open office workspace located in Denver Colorado. Two main goals for the next client were to “improve employee wellbeing” and to “recruit and retain top talent”. Through my own research on color psychology and color physiology, I concluded that within a work place cool colors can evoke feelings such as calmness while also slowing down blood flow, causing relaxation. Warm colors promote energy and excitement while increasing blood flow and productivity. My design utilized both color physiology and psychology in giving users an ability to chose and control the environments in which they worked. Research about designing a workspace for Millennials and Generation Z concluded that quirky unconventional spaces, as well as flexible design and technology integrated spaces will attract younger employees. The suites area also separated into client based and employee based interaction. Having the two separate creates a sense of professional and casual interactions.

Steltman Chair Furniture Design

The Steltman Chair was originally designed by Gerrit Rietveld in 1963. He originally designed the chair as a piece for jewelry stores where couples could choose wedding rings. Only one pair was made. The symmetrical chairs consist of three right-angled elements that are either on top of against the other. For our furniture design class, we were assigned to put our own twist on the classic chair. The chair I designed is constructed with all 2x4’s and stained. The chair is called “Voids”.

Ruby Ingram is a local coffee located at 500 Chesterfield Center in St. Louis Missouri. The shop is located on the first floor of an existing office building. The goal of the coffee shop is to provide a place for the workers in the building to come and sit and relax, work, or just grab a coffee. Three of the four walls are exterior glass which was a challenge when dealing with laying out enclosed rooms such as the kitchen and bathroom. These two rooms were placed along the only interior and non-glazed wall. Hexagonal tiles were used in contrast with the wood as a way finding technique to guide the user towards the counter from either entrance. Mixed seating arrangements allow for a variety of customers to sit alone, collaborate, meet casually, or more privately. There are also restrooms for coffee shop users which include two toilet rooms for each gender, along with one in each meeting ADA requirements. Reflected Ceiling Plan:

Ceiling Materials: A. 2’4’ ACT System B. GWB on Mtl. Stud Ceiling Heights: The toilet rooms, storage room, office, and walk in cooler all have a ceiling height of 10’. All other ceiling heights are 12’.

Yuko Takada Residence

For this project we were asked to design a 7,000+ square foot home for a contemporary Japanese Artist of our choice. The house was to be built for them and their extended family. It is located in the Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The site overlooks the Devos Japanese Garden which was designed by Hoichi Kurisu. The exterior of the house was designed base of architect Richard Meier. Yuko Takada is a Japanese Artist based out of Helsinge, Denmark. Her artwork stems from a major in weaving. Her artwork is made out of acrylic dyed trace paper in either 2 or 3D forms. Her works are light and ethereal which inspired the design for the house. The house includes a master bedroom and bathroom, along with two children rooms. There is also a suite within the house for the grandparents which includes its own kitchenette. There is a pool and outdoor area that over looks the Devos Garden. Other key rooms includes private are gallery, a working studio, a home theater, and a gym.
