1764 In 1764, the Englishman JAMES HARGREAVES developed a spinning frame (»SPINNING JENNY« ) that made it possible to spin six or more threads. This wasn’t possible before; the weavers had to work with a manually produced weft thread whose preparation needed more workers – normally the wives of the weavers. James Hargreaves was chased, his property and his machines were destroyed, and he had to flee. But the progress couldn’t be stopped. It was also possible to clean the raw material better in a machine (»COTTON GIN« ), which enabled mass production. The triumph of the cotton fibre was sealed and has endured until today.
