Around the Community: Frugal Family Fun

Create a DIY Outdoor Obstacle Course and Waterpark

Let your kids burn off some energy, soak up some sun and amp up their heart rate without signing up for spendy gym programs or costly camps. While these community activities and opportunities are valued for their on-going stimulation and instilling life lessons during the summer months, some families are not able to afford to enroll their children or are practicing safe monitoring during this time.

But that doesn’t mean you cannot offer an equally rewarding experience. Here are some DIY hacks most can find in their garage or dollar store.

POOL NOODLE OBSTACLE COURSE

Pool noodles are a great buy because they are relatively inexpensive, most households have at least one, they are durable and can be used by a wide range of age groups for a multitude of things. Get started by bending the noodle into a half moon. Use masking tape to affix to yard stakes so they stand upright. Place as many as you want and as close together. The options are endless. The best part is they can be disassembled and used in swimming pools and lakes.

SLIP AND SLIDE

Having a difficult time purchasing inflatables, pools and other water games? There are ways to create make-shift water activities with what you have in your garage or amp up the products you already have or were able to purchase. A basic slip and slide can go “turbo” with an inflatable raft and an elongated tarp for added length. Spice things up by adding stacked cups at the end for water bowling or simply test

their aim with super soakers. You can even go total retro and simply place a tarp on a small incline, turn on a sprinkler and drizzle some dish soap. Sometimes going “old school” can be the most fun, just be prepared for some bumps!

JUMP, JUMP!

A very versatile idea is to create a jumping obstacle using upside down laundry baskets and broomsticks. Simply feed the broomstick through the holes at the desired height. If your basket does not have large enough spaces, flip right side up and use the handles. Depending on how many brooms and baskets you have on hand, get creative and turn into a high jump challenge or test their speed and agility with a high-knee side jump.

HIT THE DECK!

Nothing says summertime water fun quite like water balloons. From the classic water balloon fight to incorporating into the backyard obstacle course, these inexpensive balloons can be purchased at most discount stores and only require a few things; water and the willingness to get wet!

Regardless of how you construct your DIY backyard fun, be sure to select materials that are safe for children. Avoid sharp edges and be sure to place on soft surfaces such as a lawn to avoid broken bones and scrapes. As with anything, just because it looks like fun doesn’t mean it is safe. Always test out beforehand and supervise. n

Together We Tailgate

Tips for Throwing the Best Couples Tailgating Party

For millions of sports fans around the United States, fall is the time to fill your coolers with ice-cold beverages and throw it in the back of your vehicle with some games, fire up the grill, and get your friends together for the time-honored tradition of tailgating.

The stereotypical image that comes to mind when you think of tailgating is a bunch of men standing around, drinking beer, grilling and all dressed up in the gear of their favorite team. Tailgating has evolved past being solely reserved for male bonding time and has become a popular way to get together with other couples. If you are looking to throw a fun tailgating party, here are some tips to ensure that your party becomes the legendary event that is talked about amongst your friend group for years to come.

Epic Tailgating Tips:

Get your playbook ready: You need to plan ahead. Send out the invites to your event at least 4 weeks in advance. This will give your friends plenty of time for party-goers to mark it down on their social calendar. Don’t be afraid to get some of your friends involved in

the planning. Great tailgating parties are never a one-man show. Delegate responsibilities to make sure everything gets done so the party will be a success.

Get personal: Make sure that you customize your invites and give them a personal touch. This is their first impression of what your party will be like so you want them to feel the excitement about coming.

Create the Atmosphere: The same energy that can be felt on the sidelines in the heat of the action during the game should be the same energy at your tailgating party. This takes planning. True tailgaters treat parties like a competition so the more you can turn the parking lot into your living room, the better. It’s all about having the comforts of home on the pavement at the tailgating party.

Show the team spirit: Make sure team colors are represented in an over the top way and encourage the couples you invite to do the same. Some diehard fans might come all painted up in team colors. You don’t have to embarrass yourself to show your team spirit so long as you represent your team in your own way.

14 SiouxFallsWoman.net | August/September 2020

Creating a Safe Environment: The threat of COVID still very much exists so if you are planning a get together make sure that you have enough space to socially distance yet enjoy the fun and make sure that masks are encouraged or provided if someone doesn’t have them already. This can also be a great way to show your team spirit. Many of the teams have embraced the facemask and you can buy one with your team logo. You could also buy generic masks in your team colors or buy white masks and decorate your own. No matter what you choose you will feel better knowing you are doing your part to keep friends and family safe.

The Main Event…Food: We all know that a tailgating party is focused on the food. Your team could be losing by 20 points, but it won’t matter as long as you provide the food that would make even Mean Joe Green smile. Grilled food is the classic choice but do not be afraid to step it up a notch and throw in some things they might not expect.

Snack Time: Don’t forget about the snacks. You cannot have a main event without the pregame! The perfect snack should get you salivating waiting for the main dish to finish but not so full that you could care less about what the main dish is. We recommend something on the salty side.

Beverage: What is a tailgate without a beverage, specifically beer! How else would your guests stay warm at your tailgate party during the colder months? It is all about the beer! Before you load up the keg, make sure you check into the rules and regulations of the parking lot where you plan to host your tailgating party to make sure you are in compliance. The most important rule to follow is having a sober driver present or the number for a ride service. The last thing you want is to let your guests drive home under the influence. Party responsibly.

The perfect tailgate does take some time and preparation but when game day arrives it will all be worth it. There is nothing better than the gathering of good friends, great food, the outdoors and football. Everyone should experience a proper tailgate at least once. Be the couple that gives your friends an epic tailgating experience. n

Her Voice. Her Vote. A Celebration, Commemoration and Time to Honor the 100th Anniversary of Women’s Right to Vote

Acentury ago, women were granted the right to vote because of the commitment and courage of a sisterhood who believed they deserved equality. They showed commitment and perseverance in having a voice no matter the backlash that they experienced. And because of them, all women in the United States have the right to be heard as well as have the ability to shape and influence our society for the better ever since.

To mark this historical event, Governor Kristi Noem has appointed the Women’s Centennial Vote Delegation to commemorate the 100th anniversary of women earning the right to vote and uplift South Dakota’s suffrage story. The delegation is recognized as Her Vote. Her Voice., and is a non-partisan project of the South Dakota State Historical Society and South Dakota Historical Society Foundation to commemorate, celebrate and honor the centennial.

Patricia Miller, Women’s Suffrage Delegation Chair shares, “Celebrating women earning the right to vote isn’t just important for the women and young girls alive today, it’s for everyone. It’s a reminder and recognition that at one time not everyone had

a voice. They weren’t allowed to stand up and be counted for whatever they believed in. Celebrating the vote means honoring the women who were willing to push back against the systems of the time to say that they should have a vote and that their voice mattered. That their opinions were worth listening to and that they deserved to be counted.”

The delegation is committed to creating a launchpad for historic preservation, much of what is less well-known or has never been cataloged will now be recorded for the first time. And because of this, it is seeking to raise one million dollars in order to collect women’s history artifacts, catalog oral histories, share South Dakota historical stories and more.

Thanks to private donations, South Dakota Public Broadcasting is partnering with the delegation and has created an original documentary ‘Simple Justice: Suffrage in South Dakota’ which airs August 10th. Fritz Miller, Director of Marketing at South Dakota Public Broadcasting shares, “It tells the story of some of women and men who worked to try to pass suffrage and universal

voting rights in South Dakota. The upper Midwestern states were leaders in the suffrage movement. The action of people who settled in Nebraska, Wyoming and South Dakota put their words in to action and moved toward equality faster.”

According to Tracy Saathoff, Co-Chair of the Her Voice. Her Vote. Delegation, “The work it took for women to earn the right to vote is unimaginable. Between protesting, writing letters, campaigning, getting pushback and, at times, sharp criticism – it’s amazing the amount of grit and fortitude these women had to soldier on and earn the vote. I’m grateful for their tenacity because I know I wouldn’t have the voice or the opportunities today without their resolve to get it done.”

Eyeshadow Champagne

Brilliant metallic and glimmering eyeshadows are all over social media, making a bang in the bold eye look department. Sometimes we can go for a super shiny silver or a bright glimmering purple shade, but one look is standing out above the rest for its versatility: Champagne. Not quite as bold as gold, a champagne eyeshadow is perfect across the lid, and here is a quick and easy step-by-step guide to get this look in no time flat.

First, start off with a medium brown shade on a soft blending brush, and put it along the crease of your lid. If you happen to have hooded lids, as you blend it out bring it up just a smidge in order to lift the color.

Second, grab your champagne eyeshadow. A quick-drying liquid shade is perfect for this, but even a pressed powder metallic works! Put this staple of the look over your entire lid.

Next, grab a firmer detailing brush and use a shade of brown darker than the first medium shade you used, but not too dark, and put it on the outer corner of your lid.

Once you’ve done this, take your blending brush and blend it all out and finish it off with mascara or lashes of your choice, and voila! You’ve got the perfect champagne eyeshadow look. This is a look that’s bright enough to garner compliments and smiles, but not so bold that it’s too much for everyday use. Wear it to work or out with friends, you’re guaranteed to feel fabulous! n

When you look in your closet, do you ask yourself why so many clothes end up being rarely worn?

Deb Vogel, an image consultant, says most of us “wear” 15% of our closet 85% of the time.

For three years, the House of Colour owner has been coaching and empowering both men and women on how to choose the best colors, makeup, fabrics, patterns and styles that complement their natural coloring, body shape and personality.

For Deb, less is sometimes more.

“As we move away from ‘fast fashion’ to sustainable clothing, having a wardrobe that mixes and matches and helps make the best first impression saves time and money,” she says.

Deb conducts Color and Style consultations either individually or in groups at her studio in Rock Valley, Iowa, or she will travel to a client’s home or business. A personal styling session takes five to six hours making sure to practice COVID-19 safety measures.

“You will look great, save money and LOVE your closet.”

Work it, Girl!

Stylish Attire for the Working Woman

The year 2020 has been a fantastic year for office and work fashion. As the summer begins to wrap up and we head into autumnal months, we get to brush off our sweaters and jackets and get back to work in styles that that are simple, comfortably appealing, and trendy.

The biggest and perhaps best fashion trend of the year has been monochromatic outfits, picking a color and sticking with it, matching a comfortable knit sweater with a skirt of the same color and shoes in a similar shade as well. When people hear “monochrome” they tend to think all-black or all-white, but really it can be any color in any shade! Especially with this year’s leaning toward bold solids, you can flaunt your favorite color and what looks best on you—making a statement and standing out in a way that’s completely on-trend.

Don’t forget the classic go-to blazer, whether it’s long and straight double-breasted or short and fitted to contour your waist, pair it with some high-waisted slacks and boots. And of course, if you’re looking for comfort, over-sized cardigans haven’t gone out of fashion! Encourage the working woman to look comfortable, cool, and breezy in any setting in either slacks or a skirt. We always want comfort, it’s absolutely key, but also add a little runway into it. Basically: work it, girl! n

The Art of Collaboration at Institute of Design & Technology SD

Celebrating 10 Years of Form + Fashion Meets Function

Nineteenth-century architects helped coin the phrase “form follows function”. Or is it “function follows form”? This is the question that design students at the Institute of Design and Technology SD (IDTSD) ponder each year when they prepare for their annual Form + Fashion Meets Function showcase.

Students from the fashion and the interior design programs are paired together and “given the assignment to create a collaborative piece from their chosen discipline to go with the other student’s chair or garment” according to Anita Kealey, Creative Director of IDTSD.

This is an opportunity for students to look at something from the viewpoint of another – a skill that is important

to learn in any career field she says.

Collaborations and connections with industry icons Nate Berkus and Alexa Hampton serve as the inspiration of this year’s Form + Fashion Meets Function Portfolio showcase at the Institute August 7and 8.

Fans of interior design are likely to be familiar with Nate Berkus who is known for his lean lines and lots of black, white and neutrals. Alexa Hampton’s interior designs are described as classic, traditional and eclectic.

Using the textiles of both designers, students put their interior design skills to work with refurbishing an old chair; the fashion students collaborate that inspiration with couture apparel. And, every “look” also features an

original millinery atelier “headpiece.”

The event will showcase the portfolios of the full-time students and projects of recent students attending IDTSD Project: Design Boot Camp.

Anita believes the skill level of this year’s full-time students is exceptional.

“As a group, this is the most well-curated collection ever in the history of Form + Fashion Meets Function,” she says. “The garments along with the restored and reupholstered classic pieces of furniture have been beautifully created to follow the vision of the chair and the textile.”

The event is the Institute’s annual awareness to advance creative workforce development through design career exploration and creative entrepreneurship.

“Our programs are about mentoring students with real life skills that bring them employment or direction into entrepreneurship,” says Anita.

The Form + Fashion Meets Function Portfolio Show takes place Friday, August 7 from 5-7pm and Saturday, August 8 from 1-3pm at ITDSD Design Solution Center in Lewis Square at 2701 South Minnesota, Suite 10. The event is free.

Food is Medicine

The Power of Seeds for Hormone Balance

Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food," Hippocrates said it best. Food is medicine and it is the most powerful tool we have to heal our bodies and keep us healthy. Women’s hormone health and how to balance these finicky hormones has been gaining popularity, as more and more women face issues with imbalanced hormones. This is where we can turn to nutrition, specifically seeds, that aid the body in balancing hormones naturally, no matter what stage a woman is at in life.

Seed cycling is a functional nutrition protocol that involves eating a combination of seeds in specific quantities at different stages of a woman’s menstrual cycle. The specific seeds support the body’s natural ability to regulate both the estrogen hormone and progesterone hormone production and elimination. These two hormones can be thrown off for many reasons and thankfully by using the simple seed cycling protocol, many of the imbalance symptoms a woman experiences can be alleviated. PMS symptoms are common, but they’re actually not normal! A healthy cycle without extreme symptoms is a woman’s vital sign and an indicator of internal health.

To start adding the seed cycling protocol, it’s based on a ’typical’

cycle length of 28 days and follows the lunar calendar. If a woman’s cycle is absent, she can follow the lunar calendar to re-establish her cycle (the new moon begins Day 1 and the full moon begins Day 15). There are two phases in a woman’s menstrual cycle, the follicular phase and luteal phase, and different seeds are needed to support the body during each phase.

During Phase 1, the Follicular Phase (Days 1-14), this is when a woman starts bleeding. These are the days that more estrogen is needed to build up the uterus lining. To seed cycle, a woman will consume flaxseed and pumpkin seed (1 Tbsp of each, freshly ground), because these seeds are known to naturally increase good estrogen levels, while detoxing the bad estrogen from the body.

During Phase 2, the Luteal Phase (Days 15-28) is when a woman ovulates. The body needs a progesterone boost and many women experience low progesterone symptoms. Sesame seeds and sunflower seeds (1 Tbsp of each, freshly ground) are great for boosting this. The high contents of zinc in sesame seeds and vitamin E in sunflower seeds help stimulate progesterone production.

It’s recommended to give seed cycling 3 months to allow the

36 SiouxFallsWoman.net | August/September 2020 foodie | healthy
"

body time to improve hormone imbalance symptoms. If grinding your own seeds isn’t for you, there’s easy and healthy ways to add seed cycling to your nutrition, such as through a product like BUFF seed cycling bites, protein bites that use these seeds to support your body and work on improving your menstrual cycle. Checkout eatlivebebuff. com/hormones for more information. There are many other great resources to use to discover more on seed cycling from hormone experts Dr. Jolene Brighten and Alissa Vitti, to name a few.

Supporting the body with a food is a medicine approach using seed cycling, it will help balance the body’s estrogen and progesterone, naturally. Thomas Edison really nailed it when he stated, "The doctor of the future will no longer treat the human frame with drugs, but rather will cure and prevent disease with nutrition." Everytime you eat is an opportunity to nourish your body and use food as medicine! n

A Functional Kitchen

Story and photos by Lisa Marie Blair

Kitchens are one of the most important rooms and a welldesigned one can add so much value to your home. Remodeling your existing kitchen or designing a kitchen for your new home can be stressful and overwhelming. It’s always best to seek the advice of a professional to design a functional and beautiful kitchen.

Shelly Buxton is a sales/cabinet designer and has worked at Sioux Falls Kitchen and Bath for fourteen years. When asked what is the most important thing to keep in mind when designing a kitchen, Shelly explained, “I have seen many changes over the years. So many options in style, painted versus stained, and design, but the bottom line always comes back to function. My idea of a functional kitchen is what works best for each person. People don’t always use their kitchen in the same way so I tell people that with custom cabinets we can design it for their lifestyle. A person that likes to entertain would want a bigger island with seating because the kitchen is where everyone likes to congregate. An entertainer might also might want to include a drink station/bar area for easy serving of guests. Our bakers

like to have a large countertop surface to work on and often have multiple ovens. They also like a mixer lift for easy access. Most of today’s newer homes include a walk-in pantry that can eliminate countertop clutter. Some even use that area to store mixers, a microwave or their coffee station.”

Shelly explains why custom cabinetry can meet your needs better than manufactured cabinets. “When I meet with new customers, I like to get to know them and how they use their home. Are they entertainers, bakers, cooks, etc.? Every kitchen should be unique to their personality. That is an important reason to buy custom cabinets because the kitchen needs to work for their lifestyle. We can add inserts, pullouts, and accessories that work for them. Custom cabinets give you the benefit of not having a cookie cutter look or function.”

When asked what she loves most about her career, Shelly states,” I love being able to make a dream come true with a functional and beautiful kitchen. Our kitchens are used for so many different parts of our life with our family and friends. We want our kitchen to be cozy and inviting.”

40 SiouxFallsWoman.net | August/September 2020

Shelly’s top three tips for a functional kitchen:

1. Pay attention to how you use your current kitchen. Do you bake often? Do you have a large family? Do you like to entertain? We can create your dream kitchen knowing what your pros and cons are of your current kitchen.

2. Take inventory of what you have in your kitchen now and we can add storage solutions that make a kitchen more functional.

3. The type of appliances you want will affect the overall layout of your kitchen. It is important to have a good idea of appliance sizes to begin planning your work triangle. This will create an efficient flow while using your kitchen for all activities. n

Beauty Beyond the Walls

Classic Ranch Style Home Inspires Homeowners

Photos by Margaret Pennock

When it comes to your home, what inspires you? For some it may be a family heirloom, others a favorite quilt or piece of art. With the Rinehart family, it’s their entire home. After years of living in a starter home, Erin and her husband Michael decided it was time for an upgrade. They selected a beautiful country-side lot outside of Dell Rapids and began planning their dream home. “We knew we wanted a ranch so that all the bedrooms could be on the same floor,” adds Erin. Michael, who grew up with family in the construction business, decided to tackle the job of general contractor. “It’s not my occupation,” Michael adds with a laugh.

Equally, Erin found her niche as she worked alongside Michael and relished in decorating the sprawling abode that features a main floor great room, open dining, spacious kitchen and large bedrooms. “We are both go-getters and were lucky to have reliable and talented people that we knew personally to help us along the way,” she adds. One of those people is Katie Pavel, who works in cabinet design and sales for Showplace Cabinetry Design Center. “Erin and I just clicked right away and shared similar tastes,” adds Katie.

One of the most striking details of the home is the mixed use of materials. With a love for black and white, Erin knew she wanted her home to be spacious, open and bright using the contrasting hues. “We wanted white cabinets but had some concerns about softening the space,” Erin adds. Thanks to the talents of Katie, a suggestion of integrating a rich, variegated hickory wood throughout the home in multiple ways proved to be a big design win for the trio. “It made all the difference.”

In fact, one of her favorite spaces in the home is in the kitchen. Floating hickory shelves affixed to painted black shiplap is the perfect contrast for the custom white cabinet and countertop. Finished off with subtle accessories, the combination of materials and color is enough to give a sense of serenity for Erin during her morning coffee. “I can just sit here and enjoy,” she adds.

August/September 2020 | SiouxFallsWoman.net 45

To finish off the space, the family added an oversized island complete with storage, white quartz countertops with veins of gray hues and brushed gold oversized pendant lights.

It’s the attention to detail that this young couple appreciates the most. “We really like that Katie made sure to select cabinet hardware that varies size based on scale,” adds Erin. Even a utilitarian space is given custom flair to ensure both form and function. “I love the hickory countertops,” she adds when referencing a space customized for laundry, storage and serves as a pathway to the garage. “We call it our drop zone.” For added convenience, a quaint powder bath features similar materials to blend with the overall décor.

But it’s the spacious great room that includes a casual dining space that draws the eye to a multitude of crisp whites, deep blacks and natural elements such as stone and hickory wood. To blend with the kitchen, a fireplace with a floor-to-ceiling stone surround features a hickory mantle that coordinates with the flanked floating shelves. Elongated windows provide ample sunlight while oversized upholstery make for casual living. “I am very happy with how the custom steel railing turned out,” Michael adds. Simple yet stylish, the dark steel adds another visual element to the quaint entryway, which is another favorite. “The horizontal design was something I knew I wanted to incorporate,” says Erin. “It’s the first impression of the home.”

When it’s time to unwind, a spacious master bedroom is both trendy yet welcoming. An accent wall is covered in a dark painted board and batten siding which stands out amongst the light tones. A large fabric sleigh bed with tufted headboard anchors the space while a wood bead chandelier and transom window ensures ample light. A sliding barn door leads to the master bathroom. “We were indecisive with the cabinet color at first but trusted Katie’s design decision,” Erin adds. Cabinet colors were swapped out to accommodate the white countertops while Michael was the driving force for the intricate black and white pattern on the floor tile. “I really wanted a high contrast on the floor,” he adds. The advantageous choice paid off and along with a walk-in shower featuring classic elongated subway and hexagon tile, the space adds a touch of flair to the home.

The main floor is complete with two additional bedrooms for their young sons along with a full bathroom. “With selecting a matte black tile we knew we needed to soften the space,” adds Erin. Rather than selecting a painted black or white cabinet, Katie suggested using all hickory to ensure continuity. “I love how the wood grain adds texture and an element of warmth.”

After months of planning and hard work, the Rineharts are truly enjoying every inch of their custom home. “It was a labor of love,” adds Michael. He was so inspired by his role of general contractor he has taken up a part-time job selling flooring. “We are homebodies,” she adds. “We wanted a place that we love, especially with two young children.”

Thankfully, both Erin and Michael look forward to exercising their home building and decorating passions in the lower level, which is currently unfinished. But for now, they are living life to the fullest in their breathtaking ranch-style home. “It was a lot of fun,” adds Erin. “But now it’s time to relax and enjoy.” n

DIY S’Mores Fire Pot

Story & photos by Emily Olson

S’mores and summer are often considered synonymous. The nostalgic treat is so well loved it has its own day -- August 10 is National S’mores Day! While the crackle of a campfire or wood fire pit is the most traditional, the convenience and ease of a smokeless tabletop concrete fire pot can be just as fun.

MAKING THE FIRE POT

1. Mix concrete according to package instructions. Concrete that is more wet will yield a smoother finish.

2. Generously spray the inside of the larger container and the outside of the smaller container with cooking spray. This assists in easy removal of the forms.

3. Place the outer container on a wood board that is at least 10 inches wider.

50 SiouxFallsWoman.net | August/September 2020

4. Pour concrete into the larger container, making sure to leave room for adding the second container, which will displace some of the mix.

5. Once the inner container is positioned, weigh it down with something heavy, such as a brick, to hold the container in place.

6. Turn on the palm sander and hold it on the board for about a minute to reduce air bubbles in the concrete and create a smoother finish.

7. Let concrete dry overnight or for several hours.

8. Once concrete is set, remove the forms.

9. Use an X-ACTO knife to remove any rough edges from the top of the concrete.

10. Turn the concrete pot upside down and add metal hex nuts to serve as “feet.” Felt pads can also be added to the nuts to prevent surface scratches.

USING THE FIRE POT

1. Fire pot use should be constantly supervised by an adult and never left unattended.

2. Place the fire pot on a level surface. Do not touch or move the pot while a fire is burning or the pot is still hot.

3. Ensure flammable items are not near the pot.

4. Carefully pour in 70% (or higher) isopropyl alcohol to fill the container 1 inch from the top of the pot.

5. Immediately wipe up any drips or spills with a dry paper towel. Wait to light the fire until any spilled fuel is completely dry as the flame will follow it.

6. Light the fire pot with a long handled butane lighter. Now you're ready to roast!

7. To put out the fire, let the alcohol burn completely or smother the flame with a glass or metal lid. Do not blow on the flame.

8. Remove excess fuel from the pot if not burned down completely. n

Professional Home Staging = Top Sale Beauty

Heartland Spaces Interior Staging and Styling Delivers Style, Peace of Mind and Higher and Faster Sales for Homeowners Moving on

The old adage that you can’t get a second chance at a first impression is especially true when you’re preparing your home for sale. Unfortunately, what a negative or underwhelming showing relates to is additional time on the market, a lower sale price and an increase in stress and anxiety. Conversely, staging can result in a faster sale, higher offers, more showings, a wider appeal and gives a homeowner a competitive edge. And most importantly, staging costs less than a price reduction or an extra mortgage payment. Having the potential to show a home on Wednesday and receive a full price offer on Friday is the potential payoff.

For Heartland Spaces Interior Staging and Styling owners and home staging and styling mother/daughter team Beth Thompson, CSP, CID and Jan Wagner, CSP, helping homeowners put their best foot forward is

more than business as usual. According to Jan, “We put our hearts into making any space show at its best. We are known to offer the extras, such as managing and helping with decluttering, packing and cleaning, and we also paint if the homeowners are short on time and ability. We can take care of every step and minimize stress and anxiety.”

Heartland Spaces provides vacant and occupied home staging in addition to home restyles, space planning and layout, project management, furniture and accessory sourcing, and color consultations. Drawing from a warehouse of trending furniture and home fashions, Jan and Beth are able to design a space specifically dialed in on the homeowner’s taste and vision. Jan notes, “When styling, we research to source the perfect items that fit the style and scale of every

52 SiouxFallsWoman.net | August/September 2020

space. We then provide the homeowner several options through creating concept or idea boards.”

Beth shares, “We typically work with homeowners and realtors. Whether staging or styling, we always start with a consultation. When staging, we provide a written recommendation within 24 hours, which might include important tasks, such as packing away personal and nonessential items, cleaning, painting, etc. This is an important step, as it puts value into perspective and takes away those overwhelming feelings of getting a home ready for sale. Once the property recommendations are complete, and if the seller wishes to move forward, we showcase rooms to maximize flow, size and features through furniture placement, accessories, artwork, etc. The goal is to create move-in ready appeal and leave a lasting impression with the buyer.”

Layered Elements

On Trend and Playful Home Boutique in Downtown Sioux Falls Speaks Volumes on Style

Situated downtown on Phillips Avenue, Layered Elements fits the bill for a chic, modern and elegant yet playful home store. For owners Taryn Raabe and Heather Herlyn, it’s a place to feel at home and shop comfortably with friends to find the perfect touches that truly make a house a home.

According to Taryn, “Layered Elements started brewing in 2017. I always knew I wanted to be an entrepreneur. My first job was working in a boutique and I loved the environment! It was a small intimate boutique and everyone that walked in loved it. I wanted to see those smiles every day.”

She continues, “Later that year I started working with my Dad, he’s a realtor and needed some help on the design side of things when it came to flipping homes. I was searching for quality products that were also affordable and simply just wasn’t finding the right places that had it all. That’s when I sat down with my parents and told them about Layered Elements. Of course, I had some other unpolished name at

the time but with mom’s help, Layered Elements came about!”

Layered Elements carries a variety of unique lighting as well as gorgeous modern furniture, on trend home decor, gifts, and even apparel. In addition, they offer interior design services. Taryn notes, “We’ve had the opportunity to work with many different clients, from newly built homes, lofts, and clients who have been in the same house for years but just need a little sprucing up. There is no project too big or too small and we really specialize in finding products that are difficult to find but so worth it. We really love working with our clients to find the perfect pieces if we don’t have them on hand.”

Layered Elements is located at 701 N. Phillips Avenue in Suite 135 downtown Sioux Falls or you can shop online with free shipping, except on large furniture pieces, at layeredelements.com or Facebook and Instagram @LayeredElements. Boutique hours are 10 am - 6 pm Monday through Saturday and 12 PM - 4PM on Sundays. n

Treating Overactive Bladder during COVID-19

Many women suffer from overactive bladder in silence, but living in discomfort does not have to be your normal, even in the midst of a pandemic. With the COVID-19 outbreak likely to go on for some time, Sanford Health is taking extra precautions to ensure patients can receive the care they need safely.

“I want to reassure patients that they can have a safe experience at the clinic,” says Kevin Benson, MD, a urogynecologist at Sanford Health. “With an overactive bladder, the problem does not simply go away. So, many of my patients are experiencing the disruptions of their condition while at home. We are here and can help you get back to living a full and worry-free life.”

A COMMON CONDITION

One in 3 women over the age of 35 have some degree of overactive bladder – ranging from occasional urine leakage to complete lack of control.

“My goal when treating a patient is an improvement in or complete reversal of symptoms,” says Dr. Benson.

For half of patients, simple behavior changes, such as limiting fluids and avoiding foods that irritate the bladder, are enough. Of those that don’t see improvements with behavior changes, half can be helped with oral medication.

“That leaves 25 to 40 percent of patients who do not respond

58 SiouxFallsWoman.net | August/September 2020

to either and who need additional care,” explains Dr. Benson. “One surgical option we offer is neuromodulation, which works by stimulating the nerves that send messages to the bladder muscles.”

Through a simple and quick outpatient procedure, Dr. Benson makes a small incision in the lower back near the buttock. A small wire is then inserted and the device worn externally for a two-week trial period. If the patient sees improvement in symptoms during this time, the device can be placed under the skin as a long-term treatment.

THE NEWEST TECHNOLOGY

“There are always advances in technology, and the newest option is the Axonics Neuromodulation device,” says Dr. Benson. “This device is safer, more consistent, easierto-place and longer lasting. It is rechargeable, so the battery lasts for 15 years. Plus, the Axonics device is smaller – slightly larger than a quarter – which is more comfortable and less noticeable for the patient.”

As the first physician in the U.S. to use the Axonics device, Dr. Benson has had great success, with women reporting very high rates of symptom improvement and overall satisfaction.

Patients who schedule an appointment with Dr. Benson or any of the providers at the Sanford Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery Clinic will see additional health and safety protocols. These measures meet or exceed all state, municipal and Centers for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines and include:

• Minimizing the number of patients in the clinic

• Having all staff wear masks during appointments

• Asking patients to wear masks in the waiting area and during their appointment

• Having patients answer a screening questionnaire about COVID-19 related symptoms, pending tests and exposures

• Thorough cleaning between visits

Hearing Loss: The (Inadvertently) Overlooked Health Condition Not Taken Seriously

Hearing loss is more than an annoying inconvenience.

It is an overlooked condition that impacts overall health says Bob Froke, an audiologist at Midwest Ear, Nose &Throat.

“For a person suffering from hearing loss, it takes an average of seven years for the problem to finally be addressed,” he says.

Not that it’s gone unnoticed over this period of time, Bob says there has always been plenty of clues: “Your family has told you the TV is too loud, some voices sound like mumbling, and you find yourself asking ‘huh?’ or ‘what?’ way too often.”

Currently 38.2 million Americans ages 12 or older have hearing loss, a problem that becomes increasingly more common and more severe

60 SiouxFallsWoman.net | August/September 2020

with age. More than half the people in their 70s and more than 80% in their 80s have mild to moderate hearing loss or worse according to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Unfortunately, those close to someone whose hearing is declining may not be aware that this individual is truly suffering.

Bob says for those losing their hearing, they actually deal with stages of grief.

“First, there is denial and the question: ‘Why is everyone mumbling?’ Fear follows. ‘What if this hearing loss is true? How will it change my life?’ Anger is next. ‘Why can’t people speak more clearly?’ Sadness is the stage where isolation sets in. It’s the feeling of not being included in conversations. The healthy turning point is realization where the hearing-impaired person finally decides to do something.”

Hearing loss is just one of those “getting older issues,” that families don’t address soon enough. But Bob believes the condition is often simply missed and that it needs to be considered by physicians as a “priority” and included in the same discussions as falls, safety, blood pressure, cholesterol and weight.

Bob feels an individual’s hearing numbers or “decibels” need to be given attention.

Though ear, nose and throat specialists have been the most active advocates for early recognition and treatment of hearing loss, he believes we all need to address hearing loss as a medical priority right away, as it can diminish an individual’s overall health.

“Correction of hearing loss will contribute to a person being a more active, engaged, social individual that is vital in putting off the effects of cognitive decline due to isolation.”

If you or a loved one is suffering from hearing loss, schedule a hearing consultation with an audiologist so you can be on your way to living life to the fullest. n

Kira Kimball

Creating Pathways for Diversity and Inclusion

For so many of us, worldview begins to develop when we are young. Kira Kimball began to build her worldview at a young age through reading books. “I remember riding my bike to the library in the summer to see my great aunt Ruth, the head librarian. I wandered through the aisles to find a book that would take me on my next reading adventure.” Books were the beginning of exploring a world outside of Kira’s hometown of Huron.

Kira’s love of reading ultimately opened the door to starting her career in higher education. She taught, advised, and counseled students at Purdue University and Ohio State University. It is also the place where Kira’s journey toward building a life around diversity and inclusion began. Being a South Dakota small-town girl, she was not exposed to a lot of diversity in her community. Everyone for the most part looked and acted similarly. “When I went to graduate school, I found a place rich with culture and a mix of backgrounds, races, and life experiences,” shares Kira. It was in this setting where she experienced a defining moment that would set her on the course to making diversity and inclusion an important part of her life. It was with one of the graduate students in her counseling development program. “I remember her clearly, her name was Wei Chen and she was in many of my classes. We were walking down the Purdue mall, which is just a big open space, and we were going to the campus commons to have some lunch together. As we were walking side by side talking she just grabbed my hand and held it as we continued walking and talking.” Wei Chen was from Singapore where holding hands with your friend is a common behavior there.” Kira found this to be such a rich experience because she created a safe place where her friend could be her true self, knowing that grabbing Kira’s hand would be ok. It was this experience, and many more like this, that allowed Kira to recognize that the worldview that she has is not the only worldview, and that there are lots of different perspectives and ways of living that she could open herself to. This was the start of leaning in and getting involved in educating on what was then called multiculturalism. Kira taught classes and worked with many different student organizations to help students understand and appreciate their differences and how to navigate that in their relationships and life.

While Kira was able to successfully begin to build her career and help others embrace their differences and see them as a badge of honor, her career paused for a few years in her mid-thirties. After two years teaching and advising at OSU she found herself weighed down by debilitating anxiety and depression while working at Ohio State. To heal, Kira moved back home and in with her parents. She stepped out of the workforce for two years and invested time into healing and wonderful therapy that

64 SiouxFallsWoman.net | August/September 2020 profile | cover story
Location: Josiah's Coffehouse & Café

helped her build back to a place where she was again ready to enter back into the workforce.

Entering back into to workplace was scary for Kira because she was afraid she would have to “cover” (a term commonly used in this line of work to describe how one hides their identity) and hide her depression and anxiety. Kira shares, “I didn’t know what my employer would think, what my colleagues would think, and if they would judge my capabilities and my capacity, and it took a lot to hide that.” And that’s not just my story, that’s the gay man’s story, that’s the Muslim’s story, that’s the veteran who has PTSD and doesn’t want to share that she is suffering because she is supposed to be the hero and she is afraid to say that I am completely broken and that gets in the way.” Diversity and inclusion go way beyond the color of our skin, but is also about the qualities that define us as individuals. Part of the work that Kira does now in her role as Chief Innovation Officer at Marsh & McLennan Agency is about teaching businesses how to honor all of the identities that each individual brings to the workplace.

Marsh & McLennan Agency wanted to step out as a leader in inclusion and diversity and with her background, Kira was the right person to respond and lead that charge not only for their agency but the clients they serve as well. Empowered by the support of her CEO Steve Vlk, Kira began doing copious amounts of research to find an industry leader that their agency could learn from and partner with. Her research led her to the National Diversity Council which specializes in helping employers create inclusive workplace cultures. This partnership led to Kira becoming the first South Dakotan to receive the National Diversity Council Certified Diversity Professional designation. This designation means that she is equipped to lead businesses in building a culture of inclusion within their business. “I think this work has changed how people view the workplace and how they can see inclusion as a way to recruit and retain good employees. When I can come to work as the authentic person that I am without having to 'cover' my identity my quality of work is improved and I am more productive. I am a better teammate and leader. If we value the differences that each of us has to offer then we will produce more engaged employees that will put forth their best effort because they feel accepted and safe in their environment,” says Kira.

The work Kira started with her company quickly grew into a community effort. After engaging in dozens of coffee shop conversations with employers and community leaders Kira concluded that this has the potential to become a movement in Sioux Falls. That we could build a community that is known for having a business culture that is diverse, equitable and inclusive. That this could be a powerful workforce development and economic development tool. That our school age children and Gen Z population, who are much more diverse, do not have to leave our city to see the social acceptance and career opportunity they want as part of their work environment. They can have that experience right here in Sioux Falls. So together with a group of like-minded leaders, Pathways to Inclusive & Equitable Workplaces community coalition started. “I believe the work I do does make a difference in how our colleagues feel about working for our

organization, that it increases their positive feelings about MMA because they feel valued. Their loyalty, their engagement, their productivity impacts how they reflect our organization in the marketplace and community – in a positive way. And because my role includes community relations and engagement, I have opportunities to impact our community, and my work with Pathways is one way I can do this.” Pathways offers seminars to introduce employers to inclusive and equitable workplace practices. By giving companies practical strategies, it will lead to better businesses and in turn a better Sioux Falls.

Kira does not just live this passion for inclusion in her professional life; she also practices what she teaches. She has expanded her circle of friends and activities to include people who have a different worldview or background than she does. She embraces events and causes that allow her to enjoy the rich vibrancy that diversity offers so she can learn about different perspectives and ways of living. Being a vocal public advocate for this work, Kira’s personal life is simple and quiet in contrast. “I recharge and re-center in quiet moments. I need them. My Christian faith is also very important to me. It grounds me and reminds me of the person I believe I am called to be.” For fun, Kira likes to work because she loves her job and the impact she is making and the people she inspires. Outside of work, she enjoys volunteering. She serves on five community boards as well, including Southeast Tech, Levitt at the Falls, the Sioux Falls Development Foundation, Sioux Empire Women Connect, and 100+Women Who Care. She also volunteers for United Way and EmBe. When she isn’t working or volunteering Kira loves to read, exercise, garden, cook, do remote control boats or drones, play Pokemon Go, listen to music, and spend time with family. Besides her partner of 8 years, her parents, sister and family are her favorite people to spend time with and all live in the Sioux Falls area. Kira smiles, “I am pretty boring, but I like it that way.”

Dr. Lauren Wood Thum

Maximizing Quality of Life for Patients and Family

Whether Dr. Lauren Wood Thum is improving the quality of life for her patients, traveling on a medical mission trip to Africa to help underprivileged residents with complex surgeries, or training for her yoga instructor certification to help others with their health and wellness, it’s fair to say that she is a go-getter. No matter what her focus is at any given time, one inspirational theme prevails: Making the most out of life for not only herself but the ones she cares for.

Lauren knew early on she wanted to help people through a career in medicine and earned both her undergraduate and medical degrees at University of Virginia. While still undecided about her specialty, she received some good advice. “My mentor said, ‘eventually you grow tired of cutting things out and want to rebuild something.’ I realized I wanted to help women and provide them with reconstructive surgeries to improve their quality of life.” She decided to pursue a specialty in urology.

In 2017 while working as a fellow in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery at UCLA, Lauren had the opportunity to attend her first medical mission trip to Uganda. Due to inadequate prenatal care without opportunities for reconstructive surgeries after difficult deliveries, women are often shunned from their communities and forced to live away from their families. Lauren and her fellow volunteers performed over 50 surgeries during their time there. “It’s a devastating situation with very hard and exhausting work, but well worth it,” says Lauren. “Most women describe the surgery as life changing. We are able to help give them their life back.”

Upon moving to Sioux Falls with her husband Joseph (a fellow urologist) in 2018, they began their practice at Urology Specialists. As the first woman practicing in the state of South Dakota with a fellowship in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery, Lauren is treating women around the region and filling a void they didn’t realize was there. “Many

times women don’t feel comfortable talking to a man about their health issues, or feel embarrassed about voicing their concerns,” she says. “It’s rewarding to get to know a patient and earn their trust to open up about these sensitive topics. When a patient comes to me with a problem, we come up with a goal to fix it and leave them feeling better than they did before.”

When she’s not working, Lauren enjoys exercising, practicing yoga, cooking Italian food, and spending time with her husband and three German Shepherds. Soon she will add the title of ‘mom’ to the mix – they are expecting their first child this Fall. Despite her full plate, she has no intention of slowing down any time soon. In fact, a few years down the road they’d love to expand their mission work to other countries.

“I’m very blessed to be a part of a group of physicians who support me not only in my passion of caring for women, but also in the transition to being a mom, while still pursuing my love of international work. I am grateful to have this balance and be able to live a life so full of the challenges and experiences I love.” n

Medicaid Solutions

Advice in Navigating the Transition into Long-Term Care

Coming to the place in life where you have to place a loved one in a long term care facility is never easy. For some, they watch the independence of their loved one slip away in bits and pieces over several years and for others the transition is quick and is usually caused by some traumatic event. No matter the scenario you find yourself in, planning for your loved one’s long-term living is one that most people dread and is never a comfortable topic of conversation. The fear of having this uncomfortable conversation could be compounded into a full-blown financial family tragedy if not done correctly.

Vicki Nagel, a licensed social worker in South Dakota working in elder care for 25 years, has seen many families go through the process of placing a loved one into a nursing home and the devastation it can cause when a proper plan wasn’t in place. Wanting to put her years of experience to use to help families, Vicki started Medicaid Solutions. Vicki says, “Placing a loved one in long term care is emotionally difficult and it becomes even more difficult when you add a financial issue.” Applying for Medicaid can be extremely complicated. There are innumerable guidelines to follow and even simple errors can result in a denial of benefits. The consequences of being denied by Medicaid are severe and can negatively impact the applicants’ finances and peace of mind, especially if a spouse needs to continue to pay the bills at home.

While Vicki is strictly a Medicaid Consultant and should not be considered as offering legal, financial, investment or accounting advice, she does navigate clients through the complex Medicaid application process. “The numerous rules and guidelines to follow can become overwhelming, confusing and frustrating to families. I can take that stress off the family and let them focus on their loved one,” says Vicki.

The person applying for South Dakota Medicaid must be a U.S. citizen 65 years or older with a valid social security number and living in a nursing home for at least thirty days. Vicki offers that, “If you are over-resourced you may be told that you have to “spend down,” but you do not have to do this! Even though you do not have to spend down your resources, you cannot give the excess money away within the last 60 months. This is where Medicaid Solutions can help. Medicaid Solutions offer ways to protect your hard-earned money while becoming Medicaid compliant. Medicaid Solutions will help families calculate and carefully plan asset protection to meet all income and asset requirements.

While this stage in life can be difficult, it does not have to be devastating. Vicki’s extensive experience in elder care can help ease this transition for you and your family. To learn more about Medicaid Solutions go to www.medicaidsolutions.org or call 605-310-3250 for a free consultation. n
