Readership of free community papers is now higher than paid daily papers, and continues to grow. Rather than being replaced by “instant” media, your local free community paper has become an important part of our neighborhood.

The reason, which sometimes is not heard because of all the noise about the Internet, is pretty obvious: your free community paper does what the Internet doesn’t. We promote connections at a local level. Free papers join readers and advertisers in ways digital media doesn’t. In fact, the local content and power of your free paper makes advertising even more effective. We are the number one medium for driving purchases. That’s important in every product category. National Truck Driver Appreciation Week September 10-16, 2017

Sharing the road with tractor-trailers There’s a big difference between driving a car and driving a tractor-trailer. A heavy commercial truck carrying 40 tons of cargo doesn’t have the same handling capacity and visibility as a car. To help avoid hazards and serious accidents while on the road, we’ve come up with a few driving tips to help motorists better understand these rolling behemoths.

1. Watch out for blind spots. Big rigs have several blind spots — or No-Zones — where cars can disappear from the driver’s field of vision. Keep your distance and change lanes quickly and safely when in front, behind or next to tractor-trailers 2. Respect turn signals. A trucker signalling a right turn will go into the left-hand lane. This is because large commercial trucks need to make wide turns to avoid going over curbs and sidewalks. Trying to overtake the truck on the right is dangerous, so be patient and wait your turn.

3. Overtake with care. Passing a tractortrailer requires you to drive in the driver’s blind spot, so signal your intention early on and pass it quickly. Make sure there’s enough distance between you and the truck before pulling in front of it. 4. Maintain your speed. Always maintain a stable cruising speed while driving in front of a tractortrailer. A vehicle of that size that’s forced to suddenly slow down will need about three kilometres to get back up to its initial speed.

And as always, try to be courteous behind the wheel. Angry and aggressive driving doesn’t benefit anyone.

We are grateful to our Professional Truck Drivers for their hard work and dedication! Contact us today at 1-800-973-9161 or go to www.heyl.net to inquire about open positions.

National Truck Driver Appreciation Week September 10-16, 2017

If you got it, they brought it: celebrating our nation’s truck drivers Up in the cabs of all those tractor trailers and delivery trucks on the road are the men and women who make sure you get the goods you need every day: fuel, furniture, food, construction materials and so much more. During National Truck Driver Appreciation Week (NTDAW), from September 11 to 17, 2016, advocacy group American Trucking Associations invites all of us to thank truck drivers for what they do to keep our economy alive and thriving. About 80 percent of our communities rely only on trucks for the delivery of the goods they use. On top of that, the industry is a major employer of American workers. Over 7 million people earn their living thanks to the trucking and logistics industry, including 3.4 million drivers. These facts make it hard to imagine what things would look like if truck drivers weren’t there for us to keep things rolling. Livestock Wash-Outs & Exterior Washes One of the goals of NTDAW is to combat the myth that trucks cause traffic accidents. In fact, American Trucking Associations reports that trucks have 28 percent fewer crashes than other vehicles. And in most head-on collisions (88 percent), the accident was caused by a passenger vehicle crossing the median into the truck’s lane. The next time you’re tempted to honk your horn out of impatience at a truck driver, remember that he or she is a professional driver doing their best to deliver the stuff you use. Instead, why not honk, wave and say “thank you”?

The basics on long-term care insurance Various insurance plans protect individuals from financial calamity. Insurance works by requiring policy holders to pay a premium. In the event of an accident or incident, a claim can be filed and the insurance company will reimburse the person for expenses, minus the deductible. Health insurance is one type of insurance that people have to manage their health and well-being. There is also another, perhaps lesser-known insurance that can prove invaluable. It is called long-term care insurance.

Long-term care insurance, or LTCI, is an insurance product that is found primarily in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. LTCI generally covers assisted living needs, home care, hospice care, adult daycare, and other requirements of senior living and/or health management. People who invest in LTCI are planning ahead for the times when they may no longer be able to care for themselves without assistance. LTCI will help offset the ever-rising costs associated with specialized senior housing and nursing facilities.
