VITAMINS AND CURES By Herbert M. Shelton (Reprinted from Dr. Shelton's Hygienic Review) Vitamins may come and vitamins may go, but the advertising goes on forever. Fifteen to sixteen years ago, the commercial boys were pushing the sale of vitamin A in every way they could. I grew dizzy trying to keep up with the number of vitamin A preparations that were put on the market. Then, suddenly, and without warning, they almost stopped advertising vitamin A and began boasting vitamin C. After the public had been fed vitamin C until it must have been "fed up" on it, the advertising changed to vitamin D. When I think of all the grease (fish oils) our people (especially our babies) swallowed during that era, I get nausea, myself. For the past three to four years, the advertising has been largely devoted to selling vitamin B1 to the public. During the past few months a few references to vitamin K have appeared, but B1 is still the reigning queen of the vitamins. If there is any disease in the nosology that some vitamin or combination of vitamins won't cure it is either because the vitamin boys have overlooked it, or because there has been a decision on their part to leave a few troubles to be cared for by the surgeons and endocrinologists. In one of his syndicated newspaper articles which appeared in 1939 under the title Vitamin Fad, Logan Clendening, M. D., writes: "I have said, and I still stick to it, that the doctors are among the worst offenders about concentrated vitamins. You wouldn't be surprised if just some ignoramus over the radio talked it up. But to have a doctor of medicine do so would surprise you if you didn’t know doctors as well as I do. A new thing comes along and they take it up with a whoop and plug it excitedly as a new convert to numerology for a year or two -- and then they drop it with a bang." Clendening is talking of medical men, but what he says about their credulous taking up with a whoop every new thing that comes along is equally true of Naturopaths, Osteopaths, Chiropractors, etc. Gullibility is not a monopoly of either group. What is the matter with all of them -- medical men and drugless men, alike? Simply this: they all lack dependable knowledge. None of them are well grounded in fundamentals. Few of then ever do any effective thinking. Their schools and colleges turn them out half-baked but 1

often well stewed. Clendening continues: "I have seen more than one of my friends go through allergy, appendicitis, bee venom therapy, focal infection, hypnotism, message, psychoanalysis, sunbaths, salt-free diet, vaccines, xeraphon yeast and, just to complete the alphabet, zomo therapy. I have watched numbers of my own friends go through vibration, spinal adjustments, White's bio-dynamic chromatic diagnosis and therapy, Abraham's ocilloclastic diagnosis and therapy, radionics, vitamin therapy, artificial fever and, to complete the alphabet, zone therapy. Fads are as plentiful, also as evanescent, as "scientific" and as remarkable as cures while they last, in the one field as in the other. For, in both camps there is lacking all touch with truth. No man who possesses a knowledge and understanding of fundamental principles can be repeatedly led astray by "every wind of doctrine" – every new theory and practice built thereon. Despite all the anserine cackle that issues from the camps of the various schools of so-called 'healing' about the superiority of their methods, the progress they are making and the wonders they are accomplishing, they all reveal, by their frequent change of theories and methods and by the readiness with which they dismount from one hobby-horse and mount another, that they are not satisfied with their theories and practices. The constant search for new cures that goes on in all the schools and their repeated borrowings from each other reveals as nothing else could, their dissatisfaction with the cures they have. Clendening adds: "There is a story about a medical Rip Van Winkle who fell asleep for twenty years. When he woke up, he thought to himself he would be so out of date that he could not practice, because when he fell asleep he was going strong on the milk and banana diet, and things had changed so much in the meantime. And lo and behold, he found that while many different cures had been in fashion during his siesta, the wheel had come full circle, he was right back in fashion and all the boys were prescribing the milk and banana diet." The only thing wrong with this story is the time -- it usually requires more than twenty years for the wheel to make the full circle. From the time the Salisbury meat diet fell asleep until it woke up and became a fad again was more than twenty years. From the time of the juice drinking fad of the last century to the juice drinking fad of five years ago (it is now slowly dying again) was more than twenty years. Doctors (medical and non medical) are not only "worst offenders bout concentrated vitamins", they are also worst offenders in using and popularizing all the new drugs, 2

vaccines, serums, operations, ray machines, new techniques in adjustment, new lamps, etc. They are as gullible as the presumably less informed layman when they read the clever advertising of a new product or when they listen to the glib tongued salesmen extol the marvelous virtues of the new remedy, new food product, new machine, or new ray. Why are the healing professions credulous enough to believe that a synthetic food can take the place of or is actually superior to, foods grown from the breast of old mother earth? Because they have no understanding of life. Because they have been falsely taught. Their colleges train them in false beliefs, false theories and false practices. Nature produces her own vitamins in her own food products. They are natural constituents of our daily food intake. If our food does not contain enough of them, it is because our diet is made up largely of denatured foods or because their vitamins have been destroyed by the cooking processes. To supply the needed vitamins, we don't need vitamin concentrates and we don't need "synthetic vitamins". We only need to eat natural foods. The "superior" substitutes for natural foods manufactured and sold by the commercial crowd will not be accepted by any save the ignorant and credulous. The worst part about the vitamin fads, as they come and go, is that they are heralded as 'preventives' and 'cures' for disease. They keep the public and the doctors so confused and misled that they never learn the truth about cure. Vitamins are given (just as drugs or spinal adjustments or cold baths are given) to cure disease caused by gluttony. They are given to cure disease caused by excessive enervation. They are given to cure disease caused by worry. They are given to cure disease caused by smoking or by drinking, or by many other bad habits. Giving vitamins to cure disease caused by bad habits and ignoring the habits is as foolish as to give drugs to cure disease. Indeed, the "vitamin cure" is a legitimate offspring of the "drug cure". When mankind, including its lunatic fringe called doctor and physicians, learn that establishing first class habits is nature's only cure, the countless cures that are now traded to a sick public for its hard-earned dollars will go out of fashion. Don't people ever wonder why there is so much sickness when there are so many cures? Do doctors ever wonder why there are so many chronic sufferers when the world is overflowing with cures for everything? Do the people and their doctors ever ask why the sick have to be cured over and over again so often? Do we ever wonder why diseases multiply as rapidly as 3

the number of cures increases? Must we live forever in a fool's Paradise? Can't we wake up from our Rip Van Winkle sleep that has lasted many times twenty years? How much longer are we going to permit ourselves to be fooled and exploited by those who are every bit as ignorant as we are and who dress up their ignorance in showy technical verbiage and peddle it at five dollars a bottle? *****
