PUBLISHER’S NOTE

COME BACK TO US, SUN It’s February as I write this—the metro has just been hit with another ice storm and more bad weather is predicted. It’s gray and dreary; the perfect kind of day to work from home. I didn’t even have to change out of my PJs. Dare I say bring on the 100-degree weather? I’m dying for some warmth and sunshine. Punxsutawney Phil predicted a rare early spring, but with the polar vortex now an actual thing in the Midwest, do we even believe that crazy critter? I choose to hold out hope. And, even though my daughter’s volleyball tournament and son’s baseball game prevent a warm-weather trip over spring break, we will be on a beach this summer. Until then, I’ll enviously scroll through those beach pics soon to show up on my Insta feed. What are your plans for Spring Break? Will you be one of the lucky ones getting away from the cold? I hope that whatever you end up doing, you enjoy yourself. Happy spring (I hope)!

WHAT, WHERE Meet Leah Lowe

Who: What:

Where:

LEAH LOWE, OWNER + CREATOR BEHIND THE FASHION, BEAUTY & LIFESTYLE BLOG, ELLE MAE Leah loves sharing her current trends and long-loved product favorites with her blog followers. As a KC native, Leah loves exploring both old and new restaurants, boutiques, and venues with her husband, Erick, all while shooting content for the blog. When not out perusing the town you can find Leah at home hanging out with her two beloved dogs, Brantley and Brinkley.

FAVORITE PLACE TO DINE I love trying local restaurants and it seems like new ones are popping up all the time, which is so fun. However, I just can’t seem to find another restaurant that trumps my love for Kansas City’s own Jose Pepper’s. My husband and I even had it catered for our wedding!

FAVORITE DRINK Coco Bolos has some of the best Margaritas, I love the double black diamond pineapple martini at Firebirds, and KC Wine Co. is such a pretty atmosphere to sip on some wine or wine slushes with friends and enjoy live music.

FAVORITE SHOPPING Kansas City seriously has so many adorable local boutiques. I love Frankie & Jules, TeaElla, Array KC and Scout and Molly. I’m also slightly obsessed with Anthropologie home decor and also refer to myself as a true Maxxinsta since I can be found at TJ Maxx or Homegoods weekly.

FAVORITE HIDDEN GEMS I love that Kansas City has so many fun and unique business services to offer. Need someone reliable to walk your fur child or let your dog out for a potty break? There’s Katie’s Kennel. Want to have some bubbly at your next event or party? There’s KC Fizzolino Prosecco Truck. How about a flower bouquet or crown workshop or flower party favors for your next event? There’s KC Bloom Co.

FAVORITE PLACES TO TAKE OUT-OF-TOWN GUESTS I would highly recommend a fabulous day of shopping and dining on the Country Club Plaza for anyone visiting the city. The Plaza has a variety of unique shops and restaurants—both local small businesses and your favorite national retailers. An afternoon spent shopping the antique stores in the historic West Bottoms and a Royals baseball game at The K are two others that would definitely leave your guest with a memorable Kansas City impression.

Whether you’re a born and raised Kansas Citian, or you’re the newest family to plant roots here, you need one thing to call this city home—friendship. Friends are everywhere if you know where to look. We put together a list of the best groups to make a friend in Kansas City.

Band geeks and orchestra nerds gather to play accessible beginner to intermediate symphony music.

Make friends and become an Olympian! No guarantees on a gold medal, but maybe you’ll meet someone with a heart of gold. Curling is a team sport played by two teams of four players. It’s played on an ice rink, called a sheet. Large, round, flat stones are slid across the surface toward a bullseye mark in the ice. Members of a team use brooms to sweep the surface of the ice in the path of the stone to control its speed and direction. The object is to direct the stone to stop as close to the bullseye as possible. The Kansas City Curling Club meets at Line Creek Community Center and Ice Arena in Kansas City, Missouri. The club coordinates curling activities for people of all ages by offering instruc-

Amanda Backenstoss, co-owner of Garage Boost

THE BEST GARAGE ON THE BLOCK WRITTEN BY JULIE BURTON

A garage’s main purpose is to provide shelter for vehicles. But we all know that’s not the only purpose. The garage is a dumping place. It’s the land where your hobbies are on display every time you press the garage door button. It may hold tools, yard work supplies, trash bins, Christmas lights, and your daughter’s giant unicorn raft. That is why Amanda and Bryan Backenstoss are in the business of not judging. The Backenstosses are the owners of Garage Boost, a garage storage organization system which includes wall organizers, work benches, cabinets, overhead storage racks, and garage floor coating and finishes. The backbone of the company is a system called Monkey Bars, a fully adjustable, customizable, layering shelving system that separates long-term storage from items used more frequently. How do you begin organizing your

14

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

garage if you have five bicycles, two toddler bikes, hunting decoys, fishing poles, golf clubs, deflated footballs, a flat tire, and thousands of nails scattered on the floor? It all starts with an on-site consultation.

system. The family had purchased a small plot of land for beehives. They discovered owning land requires storage, though, such as a farm-grade mower, a four-wheeler to haul supplies, and a seed planter for the wildflowers.

“Every consult I’ve been on says the same thing: ‘Please don’t judge me for all my stuff.’ And I don’t. It’s not my job to judge,” says Amanda Backenstoss. “I love organizing other people’s stuff. But I really enjoy seeing the relief on people’s faces when they have a system in place.”

They found the Monkey Bars system, but there was one problem: there wasn’t a Kansas City dealer. The Backentosses solved this problem by stepping up for Kansas City and starting Garage Boost.

Frustrated with their own garage storage, the Backenstosses searched online for a garage storage and organization

“We wanted a functional system for our own garage,” Backenstoss explains, “This is a garage-grade system and we’re the only ones in Kansas City installing it. It’s amazing how many people need help organizing their garage.”

Jimmy and Gina Montalto are grateful they found Garage Boost. Jimmy Montalto says, “They provide a fantastic product, process, and ownership. Make the call. You’ll get thoughtful consultation, prompt and professional build, and no boxes or cleanup required. We love our setup!” During the initial onsite visit, you will have a 3D rendering of your organized garage in less than 20 minutes. You will learn how you can maximize your space by safely moving your long-term storage onto overhead racks. The short-term storage racks hold bars and hooks at a level you can easily reach. The hooks can hold almost anything—ball bags, tire racks, ladders, even folding chairs. “People ask, ‘What am I going to use the hooks for?’ We’ll show you. Every fourfoot section can hold 1,000 pounds,” says Backenstoss. “Every item in your garage will have a home after we install the sys-

tem.” Garage Boost can also install custom workbenches that fold up and out of the way when not in use, cabinets, and flooring. There is even a lifetime warranty on all installs, as long as you own the home.

“I love organizing other people’s stuff. But I really enjoy seeing the relief on people’s faces when they have a system in place.” After working with many clients, Backenstoss learned a few helpful tips in garage organization:

• You can’t save everything. Space can be made but items won’t shrink. Make sure you know what you need and what you don’t. Be a realist when it comes to deciding what to trash, donate, or keep. • Start organizing the clutter triangle. People tend to shove items in a corner, and it makes a triangle as it mounts up. Garage Boost tries to reverse that habit by putting the clutter up. • Have a system. No matter how you organize your garage, you will need a system—have a place for everything. • Think in terms of seasons. The seasons play a big role in what is in your garage. Keep winter things up and out of reach and leave spring/summer available. Then swap when the season changes. Don’t be embarrassed by your garage. Garage Boost can help.

CARE FOR NEW MOMS WRITTEN BY ANN MUDER

New babies bring joy and excitement for families. They also bring a world of changes, especially for moms dealing with the hormones of pregnancy. These physical changes, in addition to sleep deprivation and upturned schedules, can lead to unexpected feelings of anxiety, sadness, and even postpartum depression.

to their isolation. They assume they should be able to handle it all, especially when comparing themselves to others by looking at social media. “Being a parent is hard, and there isn’t one book that can prepare you,” says Walania. “As new moms, we have to learn to manage our expectations. Everyone thinks they have to live in a Pinterest world, but that’s not reality, and no one can do it alone.” One way for family and friends to help is to take on chores like laundry and dinner and help with the baby whenever possible. It’s important for mom to get that time to take care of herself, whether it’s eating something nutritious, going for a walk in the sunshine or taking a well-deserved nap.

TALKING TO OTHERS

“ Having

a baby makes a huge impact on us,” says Tricia Walania, coordinator of Postpartum Emotional Support for AdventHealth Shawnee Mission. “There are a lot of changes before and after pregnancy. Our bodies change; our minds change. It’s important to let moms know they’re not alone and support them so they can enjoy time with their baby.”

When new moms know these feelings are common, they’re more likely to get the help they need. The following tips can help provide emotional support in those months before and after baby arrives.

LETTING OTHERS HELP Some moms may be too afraid to ask for help. They may have trouble getting out of the house as well, adding

New moms can find it helpful to talk about their feelings with other moms going through the same changes. AdventHealth Shawnee Mission offers the only hospital-based perinatal support group in the Kansas City area. In this group, moms can talk about the pressures of caring for a newborn, ways to cope, and resources in the area. The group is open to all moms, regardless of whether they delivered at AdventHealth Shawnee Mission. “The amazing thing about that support group is how the moms love and support each other, says Walania. “The older members are always so welcoming to the new members. BE WELL CONT. times to walk together, and even form playgroups. It’s a place for them to get support and talk so they can feel better as soon as possible.” Walania also follows up with members of the group to make sure they’re getting the help they need. “I get a lot of calls from dads and grandmas as well about how they can best support the new moms,” says Walania.

KNOWING THE WARNING SIGNS Moms often have the “baby blues” after giving birth—feelings of worry, sadness, or moodiness. But if those feelings last for over two weeks or if she’s having trouble sleeping or thoughts of self-harm or harming others, call a health care provider immediately. It could be an indication of

postpartum depression. Physicians can help with determining risk for postpartum depression and finding resources to help. New moms who deliver at AdventHealth Shawnee Mission take the Edinburgh postnatal depression scale test to evaluate their risk. This test allows caregivers to talk with the moms and families about what’s normal and when to seek treatment. “It’s good for mom and the family to hear that so they can be watching for those things,” says Walania. “Especially if a patient already has anxiety or depression before birth, it allows us to have a social worker to come talk to them and get them on the radar for followup appointments with their physician.”

ns Sessioing start 7 at $2

The most important thing for moms to remember is they are not alone, and that help is always available. Asking for help doesn’t mean you are a bad mom, says Walania. In fact, it means the opposite—you want the best for your baby. “There are a lot of people in the community who are there to help,” she says. “Don’t be afraid to express your feelings and ask questions.” AdventHealth Shawnee Mission offers a Perinatal Support Group on Thursday evenings in the Tapestry Room on the Shawnee Mission campus. KACIE IS IT WRONG TO BE THE TARDY BIRD?

I’m always late but I don’t see it as a problem. Is that wrong?

It’s not wrong if you live in Spain, France, or Greece. Since you’re reading SIMPLYkc Magazine, though, I’m guessing you live in the United States. Let me guess, you were probably late for a dentist appointment. When you really think about it, people are late because they don’t want to be early. You can set the clock ahead as much as you want, but your subconscious brain will still tell you to take your time. As far as whether or not you’re wrong, though, I wouldn’t ask your dentist. You won’t like the answer. If you’re late, you create a domino effect that eventually leads to someone fuming at the dentist three hours later because of you. Professionals like you to be on time. When interacting with people who depend on you, try to cut out your tardiness. Arrive early, even if it means you have some time to sit in the parking lot. Where it’s more socially acceptable to be late is when you arrive at a friend’s house or show up to a baseball game. No one is depending on your presence. Franklin D. Roosevelt said it best, “I think we consider too much the good luck of the early bird and not enough the bad luck of the early worm.” FDR, a true American.

THREE WAYS TO MAKE YOUR SPACE

LOOK LIKE AN INTERIOR DESIGNER’S WRITTEN BY BRENNAN HALLOCK

Most of us are not professional interior designers, but we still want our spaces to look like a professional has designed them. This is easier said than done, but there are certain tips professional interior designers will give to make your space look more inviting and pleasing to the eye.

BALANCE The number one principle you will see repeated over and over on design blogs from interior design to graphic design to fashion design is balance. There is a reason this is such an important principle. Our brains seek symmetry, and when it is found it is calming. Balance in design refers to the even distribution of weight, which leads to steadiness or evenness. Weight doesn’t mean physical weight, though. As with other design principles, it’s about perception and how something makes you feel. Perception is subjective, but there are certain common aspects. For example, darker colors such as blacks and dark grays tend to have

22

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

more visual “weight” than lighter colors, such as whites or light grays. “I use balance a lot,” explains Lindsey Laurence, design consultant for California Closets in Overland Park. “Whether it’s symmetrical or asymmetrical balance, it’s important to keep everything in line and balance the weight of the items.” Laurence explains that if you have a large dresser with a lot of drawers on one side of the closet, you can balance it out with a mirrored door over a shoe cabinet on the other.

CONTRAST Like many principles, if balance is the only design principle used it becomes boring. This is where contrast becomes important. Laurence says, “I really like to have contrasting colors, whether it’s the wall color versus the finish or a drawer in a closet versus the rest of the closet, which makes it stand out more and become a focal point.” She explains that having a very simple design with one bold focal point—such as a piece of art on a wall,

a bold accent wall, or even a bright pillow on a bed or couch—can take a simple, boring design and make it interesting.

ALIGNMENT Finally, it’s important to pay attention to the visual lines created by what you put in your home. “Have a variation of horizontal versus vertical lines and make sure they are aligned,” explains Laurence. This is important to maintain balance and create a comfortable feeling in your home. It can also help guide people to a focal point and create the contrast needed to make your home interesting. For example, if you put a couch against a wall and a piece of art on the wall behind it, it’s important to center the piece of art. If the piece of art is off center, it will cause the viewer to notice something is out of balance, even if they cannot express what. In addition, you can imagine lines radiating from the piece of art horizontally and vertically from its base and sides. If you put other items on your wall or in the same room, be sure to align them to these imaginary lines.

THE NO-NONSENSE GUIDE TO BUYING APPLIANCES WRITTEN BY SIMPLYKC STAFF

32

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

In the market for a new refrigerator, treadmill, or toaster? Keeping your eye on the latest energy-efficient washer and dryer models? Then you’re in luck. We put together some buyer guidelines to consider before making your next appliance purchases.

WHERE TO SHOP In its “best places to buy appliances” article, published last fall, Consumer Reports mentions the top places to buy large appliances are Costco and Nebraska Furniture Mart. Consumer Reports notes that while the big stores are often the first that come to mind for appliance purchases, online appliance sales are on the rise. The magazine suggests checking with locally owned stores as well, as they might offer the best customer service and most knowledgeable staff. Before you go shop, take a little time to peruse the advertisements and do some online research so you will be armed with some good information about what you are looking for and have a price point in mind—many re-

tailers often are willing to match a competitor’s sale price. Finally, don’t forget that secondhand shopping is always an option, too. While the inventory on websites such as Craigslist or at estate sales and secondhand shops is hit-or-miss, you never know when someone else might need to unload a gently used treasure. You just might be one of those lucky ones to find excellent secondhand deals on high-quality appliances and furniture. It’s worth a look!

WHEN TO SHOP Huge caveat here: Most of us make major appliance purchases only when the old one goes kaput or when we move to a new house. But if you do have some wiggle room on when to buy or are able to plan ahead (sometimes you just know the dishwasher you’ve had for 15 years is on its last leg!), here are some things to keep in mind. Generally, you can get the best price on a large appliance when the new models arrive by purchasing last

year’s style. This means that the beginning of the year is often a good time to buy appliances. Stores often run sales on holidays such as President’s Day, Memorial Day, and Labor Day. If you want to increase your odds of getting more time and attention from a salesperson and don’t want to deal with big crowds and long lines, try to shop on a weekday. Consider buying appliances at the end of their season—for example, buy your snow blower when it goes on end-ofwinter sale, or buy your new grill in the fall to get the close-out price.

CAN YOU HAGGLE ON PRICE? It would not occur to many of us to

question the sticker price on an appliance, but expert shoppers will tell you that prices on many large-ticket items often are negotiable. Be polite, and simply ask, “Is this the best price you can offer?” You may be surprised that the sales associate is willing to come down a little in price if they are trying to meet a month-end quota or make room for new inventory. Always do your research before you buy so you have an idea of what a good price is. And don’t forget to ask for a price match if another retailer is running a better deal—it might help to bring the sale ad along.

A WORD ON WARRANTIES

service plan likely will be money down the drain. This is because appliances don’t typically break within the time period of an extended warranty, and if they do, they already might be covered by the standard manufacturer’s warranty, by the store where you purchased it, or might not cost much to repair. It is a good idea to hang onto copies of paperwork such as the manufacturer’s warranty and the store receipt when you make a major appliance purchase. A simple three-ring binder with clear plastic pockets or page protectors works great for organizing appliance warranties and other pertinent household paperwork.

It is typically not necessary to buy the extended warranty on a new appliance. According to a Consumer Reports article about warranties, money spent on a

IMAGING FOR WOMEN:

BRINGING COMPASSION TO SCREENINGS WRITTEN BY T.E. CUNNINGHAM / PHOTOS BY JAMI MARSHALL

When Dr. Malley founded Imaging for Women, the average woman in the Kansas City northland waited nearly six weeks to get screened. That statistic is what drove Dr. Malley’s decision to focus his practice on women’s imaging needs. Dr. Allison Howard Zupon and Dr. Troy Voeltz, both board certified with an additional fellowship solely on mammography and with women’s imaging as their subspecialty, joined Dr. Malley. The three have molded a patient-friendly, compassionate company. “If I could use one word to summarize our actions toward our patients and our team members, it is compassionate,” explains Dr. Zupon. “Our readings are given to our patients the same day the screen occurs, as are additional work-ups. We don’t believe in making a patient wait days to get their ‘all clear’ when an abnormality presents. We treat our patients like we would our mother, our sister, or a close friend.” Dr. Voeltz says he was drawn to the practice because it offers a rare level of freedom in treating patients. “Here you can do the most good for your community,” he says. “You can set up customized outreach programs and charitable work.” These community efforts include an event for Northland women who are uninsured. They are given transportation, provided food and beverages, treated to a complimentary mammogram and consultation with a nurse on self-exams, afforded a massage therapist, and given a swag bag of goodies. Although Imaging for Women is a small company, it is a mighty one— leading the region with the newest in cutting-edge technology. It is the only

facility in Kansas City where a woman can control the amount of compression being applied during her mammogram. There is no extra charge for it; the team simply believes it is important. The technology has been in place for a year now at the facility and was designed for women by women at GE Healthcare (Invenia ABUS 2.0).

“If I could use one word to summarize our actions toward our patients and our team members, it is compassionate.” “Some women avoid mammography because of the pain or anticipated pain,” says Dr. Voeltz. “With this technology women sometimes actually allow for more compression, with a remote control which they can adjust to where they are comfortable. There is a maximum amount, and if it hits that level the machine is triggered to take the photography to minimize the time of discomfort.” Dr. Zupon points to their position on 3-D technology as another area of leadership in treatment. “3-D is quickly becoming the standard of care,” he explains. “3-D exams have recently begun being used exclusively here because it

is the right thing to do. It helps reduce the number of women who must have additional screening, and helps define cancers when they are smaller.” This technology allows the doctor to see through dense tissue more easily by taking multiple small pictures and then reconstructing them. With a 3-D mammogram, multiple pictures are taken at a lower dose of radiation, but they give a clearer picture. Kerri Craven is a patient who has benefited from this technology. “With a history of breast cancer in my family, getting my mammograms yearly is vital,” she explains. “Previously, I’d wait three or more weeks to get an appointment and up to three weeks to get my results, which was agonizing. The whole time I would wonder if this is the year my life changes forever. Then I heard about Imaging for Women and their same-day results. It was an easy decision for me to decide to drive from Lee’s Summit.” When she called to make her appointment, she was able to get in within just a couple of days. Before she left, she was able to speak directly to the radiologist who read her scans, letting her walk out with a sense of relief. Imaging for Women may someday expand, but Dr. Zupon explains that faceto-face interaction, being involved in the community, and a total commitment to compassionate care are their primary focuses. This total commitment to patient care has resulted in people traveling from not only all over the Kansas City Metro, but from the greater Midwest as well.

BEAUTIFUL GIRLS!

INSPIRING REAL BEAUTY IN OUR GIRLS WRITTEN BY REBECCA FISCHER

For decades, the question Who sets the beauty standards for our girls? has led to discussions about glossy fashion magazines, persuasive advertising campaigns, and Photoshopped celebrities. The topics of art and the ever-changing ideals for the female body come up as well. We’ve all heard questions like “Did you know that Marilyn Monroe was a size 12?” followed by clarifications about how much clothing sizes have changed since the 1950s, meaning Monroe would actually be smaller than today’s size 12. These arguments only seem to add to women’s insecurities. The $70 billion plus diet industry certainly supports women’s feelings of insecurity about their bodies as well. The real question then is are we finally ready to say So what? to these messages? Or like Mark Manson, author of The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck, we could ask, “Are we ready to stop

giving a f*ck?” For the sake of our girls’ happiness, we should be.

Empowering Girls and Women in KC Ritu Nanos is in the minority as a female owner of a Martial Arts dojo. Nanos owns AKKA Karate USA in Westport, Kansas City’s first Martial Arts school, which opened its doors to teach Kenpo Karate 50 years ago. Among the different karate, tai chi, and meditation classes she and her team offer are workshops teaching self-defense to women, including teenage girls and their mothers. All of the classes at AKKA empower students to stand their ground and feel comfortable—even powerful—in their own skin. This is what brings about a person’s true beauty, Nanos says. “Growing up, I remember being taught it was not acceptable for a woman to be strong, to use her voice, to own the ground she stands on,” Nanos says. continued on page 38

PARENTING CONT. “So what was left for us? Beauty was decided based on what men found desirable, and for a long time we accepted it.” She adds that validation through another’s eyes has also been intertwined with gender roles for men and women assigned by a patriarchal system that is inherently limiting. “As a woman in the profession of Martial Arts, I encounter this very often,” says Nanos. “Being an attractive woman often undermined men taking me seriously; by making my beauty more important than my strength or my skill, they could continue to control how I valued myself, and how powerful I am. I find that it is deep value of oneself and feeling one’s power that creates the shine of beauty in a person.” She explains that this is what is taught in Martial Arts. “True self-worth, self-confidence, humbly frees you from

the need for validation from others,” she says. “When you validate yourself, you do not need to try to be beautiful for others, because you are beautiful enough for you. Ironically, it is this way of being that brings out our sparkle.”

Finding Resources Online Although the internet and social media can quickly and easily perpetuate the idea of beauty as defined by another, it can also be an excellent resource for educating ourselves about self-esteem and ways to teach our girls about true beauty. One such online resource is the website amightygirl.com. The website and its associated social media offers “the world’s largest collection of books, toys, movies, and music for parents, teachers and others (this means you, reader!) dedicated to raising smart, confident, and courageous girls and,

of course, for girls themselves!” The founders believe that girls “do not have to be relegated to the role of sidekick or damsel in distress; they can be the leaders, the heroes, the champions that save the day, find the cure, and go on the adventure.” They even offer a girl-empowerment gift guide, where gifts can be selected based on age (zero through teenager and up) or category, including coding/ robotics, arts and crafts, games, women’s history, get active, and more. The next time you make a beauty purchase or talk to a girl about beauty, stop and ask yourself how you feel. Beauty should feel beautiful. “Beauty is not inner or outer,” Nanos says. “It is inner to outer. The whole being loving herself so that the inner illuminates an outer glow.”

FANCY

FOOTWORK FOR SUMMERTIME WRITTEN BY T.E. CUNNINGHAM

Something about spring makes us want to focus on fashion a bit more— experiment with nail color, buy those new strappy sandals and throw on a colorful new dress. But before you bare your toes, you need to make sure your nail fashion is in full gear. First up, it’s time to get that dead skin off your feet. If you’re trying to do this on a budget rather than slipping down to the spa, read below. In a few easy steps you can have that “fresh from the spa” look. Goodbye lizard feet, so long cracked heels, farewell runaway nails and dry skin:

• First, soak your feet with one of your favorite oils—or you can go organic with Epsom salts or olive oil. • Next, it’s time to get that rough skin off. Apply your favorite scented foot scrub using a pumice stone. Firmly scrub all over your feet with a strong focus on the heel and the backsides of your

40

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

feet. The balls of your feet can be another spot harboring dead skin, so give them some TLC too. • Perform a quick buff of hard skin (electronic foot files are great for this). After you’re finished it’s time to moisturize. • If you are going to spend money anywhere, this is the time to do it. It’s worth investing in a thick, rich foot cream to keep your feet soft and smelling sweet. Moisturize generously everywhere except between the toes to keep that area free of bacteria. • Quick tip: apply the foot cream each night and throw a pair of socks on before going to sleep for an intense moisture bath. If your feet are in poor shape, you can perform this with petroleum jelly for a more intense overnight softening. • Finally, make sure you push your cuticles back gently and snip away any lingering dead skin.

Not on a budget? Head down to your favorite spa and let them do the work for you while you de-stress! Fun fact: Some people get a fish pedicure, soaking their feet in a tub of water containing small, freshwater fish native to the Middle East that will eat dead skin.

along with some recurring themes. Reds and nudes seem to be perennial favorites and qualify for “can’t go wrong” if you want to play it safe. Metallics made a fierce comeback on the runway with shades in all colors—purple appearing to be a favorite.

Pedicure sanitizing is obviously very important at a spa, but if you are adventurous and thinking about going this route, keep in mind that tubs may not be properly cleaned between customers and the fish may not be sanitized between each customer’s pedicure session. As such, fish pedicures could open you up to the risk of infection.

One of the more interesting ideas included glitter nails. You don’t need to be overly careful about application here, either. Consider it an art form and Jackson Pollock those toes!

Now you have a fresh blank canvas, so what do you do? You paint, of course!

The trendiest color for the summer season appears to be yellow, and what other color says sunshine better? Although a few shades of yellow are the trendiest for this summer according to Pantone, their color of the year for 2019 is Living Coral.

The runways for 2019 spring and summer fashion were loaded with new ideas,

Frames are a new look in nail décor. If you have not witnessed this trend, the nail is

typically painted and then “framed” with a chain, rope, shell, or crystal applique. Additionally, you can create the frame by simply using a different shade of polish. Get creative here; there are no rules. You can always stick to a pattern or design— Houndstooth, checks, diamonds—or go geometric. Black and white polish combinations work well within patterns. Now that your feet are beautiful, we have one last tip for you and the family. Don’t forget to protect your feet and toes all spring and summer with the correct level of sunscreen. Most people don’t think about their feet when applying sunscreen, but the skin on your feet is susceptible to skin cancer. You want to lather up generously and keep reapplying throughout the day and every time you exit the water if you are at the pool, lake, or beach.

GOOD TASTES

LOOK FORWARD TO SPRING WITH THESE SCONES

WRITTEN BY GINA REARDON / PHOTO BY MELANIE MCDOWELL

Orange-Cranberry Scones MAKES 8 LARGE SCONES, 12 MEDIUM-SIZED SCONES

Ingredients 3 C. all-purpose flour 1/3 C. sugar 2-1/2 tsp. baking powder 1/2 tsp. baking soda 1 tsp. salt 2 T. freshly grated orange zest (from 3 large oranges) 12 T. chilled unsalted butter, cut into 1/2 inch pieces 3/4 C. dried cranberries 1 C. buttermilk

Directions Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Sift together flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Add orange zest and mix with fork or fingertips to distribute evenly. Add chilled butter and mix with pastry blender or rub with fingertips until dry mixture resembles coarse meal. Add cranberries, then drizzle in buttermilk, mixing with fork or wooden spoon until dough begins to form.

Weary of aging apples with little flavor and out of season fruit, it’s the bright notes of citrus that liven our taste buds and reminds us spring is around the corner, patience is a virtue, and the spectrum of green vegetables and bright berries will dazzle us once again. These scones combine dried cranberries and fresh orange zest. Tender and delicious, they are sure to become a family favorite.

Gather dough together and knead briefly, about 4-6 turns. For medium-sized scones, divide in half and pat each half into a 5-6 inch diameter circle, slightly raised in the center, edges even. Cut each round into six wedges. For larger scones, shape dough into a larger 8-9 inch diameter circle, raised in the center, edges even. Cut into eight wedges. Place scones on parchment-lined baking sheet 2 inches apart. Brush with additional buttermilk or melted butter and sprinkle with coarse sugar. Bake approximately 20-22 minutes for medium-sized scones; 25 minutes for larger scones, or until slightly golden and feel cooked through when sides are gently squeezed. Remove from oven, let rest 10 minutes. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Gina Reardon, owner of Catering by Design and culinary philanthropist, leads the KC team for No Kid Hungry, culinary professionals and community members focused on supporting Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry campaign. Funds raised help connect the nation’s 16 million low-income children with more school breakfast, lunch, and summer meals.

BECAUSE I SAID SO...

I’M SORRY THE CAT FLIPPED YOU OFF

WRITTEN BY JULIE BURTON / PHOTOS BY SAMANTHA LEVI

Oh no! I thought. It’s the hat I accidentally ordered with a cat holding its paw up, flipping off the world. I turned my body slightly so I could peek at Kate’s hat. I needed to see if the flap was covering the cat’s paw. It wasn’t.

I apologize but I could be writing about you. It’s not my style to write about someone other than myself without asking permission. You didn’t do anything wrong either, it’s just that I’d like to apologize that the cat flipped you off. I’m an introvert, so making playdates is hard. I find it difficult to ask parents if I can have their child over to my house outside of school, so I was beyond excited when you took the initiative to set up a playdate. “Yes! Of course. My daughter Kate would love to have dinner and watch a movie at your house,” I exclaimed. “I’ve heard so much about your daughter. It’s a joy to watch Kate play with friends outside of her neighborhood circle.” Scott dropped Kate off at your house because I was making chili. I figured I would meet you when I picked her up.

I knocked on your door at 8 o’clock and you answered. I walked in and stood in the foyer. Your home is gorgeous, by the way. “I’m Julie, Kate’s mom,” I introduced myself. we chatted about how much our daughters adore each other, then you yelled for the girls to come downstairs. “Smells like pizza in here,” I said. “Oh, yes. I ordered pizza for the kids tonight,” you replied. Kate skipped down the stairs and said hi to me while she pulled her coat on. She wrapped her scarf around her neck and pulled the hat over her head. Then I saw it.

The cat was flipping you off as I stood there wanting to fall to the ground and die. Your daughter said they watched Incredibles. She wanted to watch Incredibles 2 but Kate hasn’t seen the first one so they watched the first one and ... why does she keep talking? I thought. I could feel the middle finger jumping at your face as you talked with Kate. I would like to take this opportunity to explain. I ordered this hat for Kate three years ago, but I didn’t realize the cat was flipping off the entire first grade until Kate pulled the flap down after school. I hid the hat in my closet, but the kids must have found it. Kate still doesn’t know what the middle finger means. We’re not that type of family who likes to flip off new friends. We only flip off friends we know well. I’m kidding. This is my apology and I’m so sorry if this is about you. I’m sorry the cat flipped you off.

I cannot even put into words how AMAZING my experience was!!!! I was lucky enough to have Emily as my consultant and she made my whole day feel like a dream. The entire process was filled with fun, incredibly seamless, very open and honest, & completely stress-free. I woke up the next morning wanting to do it all over again!!! Everything was so magical and my heart is so full. -Alex L

Emily Hart Bridal was an unforgettable experience! They made us my entire group feel right at home.We had our own space with a big couch and beautiful, big mirrors. The building is gorgeous and makes you feel so special. There are so many amazing dresses to choose from that I had a hard time deciding my favorite!!We worked with Molly and she was outstanding! So professional, knowledgeable, sweet, and patient! I would highly recommend Emily Hart and working with Molly. I guarantee you wont have to go anywhere else!! -Madison S.

Just amazing! The beauty and quality of the dresses is truly impressive but more so, the customer service and attention I received was by far the best I’ve experienced! Sara was so incredibly helpful! She went above and beyond to listen attentively to my vision of the perfect dress, gave great guidance and made me feel at ease during this stressful time. I’m so very grateful! Even Emily herself came over to help. Thank you so much for your hard work in providing a beautiful boutique with exceptional lady’s making brides dreams come true. -Stacy K.
