Melissa Boerema, DDS, first knew she wanted to be a dentist in the fourth grade. She remembers writing an essay on what she wanted to become when she grew up and why, and had no trouble choosing dentistry as her future profession. Her childhood dentist, Dr. Christian Willard, was integral to that decision, and helped spark her interest in the field. She
liked that he was always positive and proactive, and that he answered all of her questions. “For me, my childhood dentist was the tipping point of deciding what I wanted to become,” she says. Dr. Boerema even shadowed her childhood dentist during her first summer in college. She received her undergraduate degree in biology from the University of Missouri, and later graduated from dental school at the University of Missouri– Kansas City. She went on to do a one-year general practice residency at Truman Medical Center, where she gained even more experience in advanced dental cases and sedation. She worked at a children’s clinic in Belton, Missouri, before coming to Arbor Creek Dental in May 2015. She learned during that time that she loves working with children, which she is still able to do at Arbor Creek Dental.
