Dear reader, Good that you just opened the first Simon Ster of this year. This is the 61st year of our Association, the oldest in Eindhoven. The Simon Ster is in its 49th year, this means that next year there will be a lustrum for the magazine. In this edition you will get an idea of what the Board of this year looks like and what they actually do. The KookCie will help you to get ideas for some nice student-proof Christmas dinner, you can read about course evaluations and many more!

During the first few weeks of the year everyone started freshly, hoping this academic year will bring luck.

When you read this, the first quartile is practically over. As a student you can probably make an estimation on whether you passed your first exams of the year or not. If you did good, keep up the good work!

If you did not: there always is a next chance soon, maybe the next quartile brings you more luck.

In our first weeks as members of the Board we saw that one thing certainly did not change in comparison to the last few years: the loads of enthusiasm to create something valuable is present among everyone in our Association! With all the wonderful ideas and creativity of the W.S.V. Simon Stevin members we are convinced that this will be another year to remember!

Faster recharging batteries Since nowadays lots of electronic devices use batteries, a lot of research is being done to get the batteries to recharge faster. Scientists from the Rice University (Houston, Texas) have recently done a new discovery in the recharging of lithium batteries.

They made one component of the battery from a carbon that is derived from asphalt. This sped up the recharging 10 to 20 times, meaning that the battery is full in a matter of minutes instead of hours. Not only is the recharging faster, the carbon component also stops the formation of deposits, called lithium dendrites, that shorten the life of a battery. The batteries went through hundreds of cycles of charging and discharging to make sure this new technology is stable. When this new technology will be commercially available, is still unknown.

Augmented reality furniture shopping

SpaceX

Ever had the problem of going furniture shopping, wondering how something would look in your living room, buying it anyway and then having to return it because you did not like it after all? IKEA now has the solution for you. They released an app in which you can view the furniture in augmented reality. The app scans the room where the user is located and shows the furniture on true scale. For now, the app only works on iPhone, since it works with the new ARKit-software that is incorporated in iOS 11. Google is still working on similar software for Android.

Most of you already know SpaceX for its re-usable rockets. After several successful tests with these reusable rockets, CEO Elon Musk now also wants to use them for trips around the world. This would make it possible to reach every location on earth within an hour.

For the trips around the world, SpaceX would want to use their concept ‘Big Falcon Rocket’, of which the first is going to be built in the coming six to nine months.

To make the trips the rockets would be shot in an orbit around the earth and land on a floating platform close to the desired destination.

It is not yet clear if and when these rockets will be used for these journeys, since there are no agreements yet about a rocket network around the earth. Elon Musk also could not say what the costs of such a journey would be and what the environmental impact of the rocket travel would be.

Disaster relief Since Puerto Rico has recently been hit by hurricane Maria, most of its communication networks have been down. Two weeks after the disaster, over 90% of the country still does not have a mobile network.

To set up a temporary communication network, Google’s parent company Alphabet has been granted permission to let up 30 internet balloons. These balloons are part of ‘Project Loon’, which is a network of balloons flying close to space to provide people in rural and remote areas internet access. In Puerto Rico, these balloons will not only provide internet access, but they will also act as mobile telephone masts. Alphabet works together with eight Puerto Rican telecom companies to also provide a mobile network on the island.

Alphabet is not the only tech company that is going to help with disaster relief after the hurricane. Tesla is researching the possibilities to place batteries and solar panels on the island to provide a temporary electricity network.

Robotics

Stretchy aritificial skin Rubber electronics and sensors that still operate normally when stretched to almost 50 percent of their normal length is a new breakthrough in the field of robotics. The rubber electronics and sensors have a wide range of applications, from biomedical implants, to wearable electronics, to digitized clothing, to “smart” surgical gloves. Like human skin, the material is able to sense strain, pressure and temperature..

One of the more interesting applications could be for robots themselves. Humans want to be able to work near robots and to coexist with them. But for that to happen safely, the robot itself needs to be able to fully sense its surroundings. A robot — perhaps even a soft, flexible one, with skin that’s able to feel its surroundings — could work side by side with humans without endangering them.

Because the rubbery semiconductor starts in a liquid form, it could be poured into molds and scaled up to large sizes or even used like a kind of rubber-based ink and 3D printed into a variety of different objects. The field of application for this new material is therefore very large.

Different people are already working to improve the material’s electronic performance. The next goal is that stretchiness of the material will be improved to beyond the 50 percent mark that was tested in the new study.

Every year, W.S.V. Simon Stevin apppoints a new Board. These people put in everything they can to make this year unique and let the association thrive. To gain some trust in these seven people, they have written a short introduction about who they are and how they ended up as a member of the Board. Enjoy!

The 61st Board Sem James Chairman If you read this you have made the best decision of your life: you chose to go and study Mechanical Engineering at the TU/e. Together with six other amazing people we form the 61st Board of our Association, W.S.V. Simon Stevin. For those who don’t know me yet (but also for the ones that do), I will introduce myself. This year I am the Chairman of W.S.V. Simon Stevin.

Twenty-one years ago I was born in the beautiful city that we all know as Eindhoven. As we say in dutch, the apple does not fall far from the tree. You probably recognise the neighbourhood I come from out of movies like New Kids Turbo. Yes, I’m talking about Woensel.

After some years of elementary school, I enjoyed high school at the Eckartcollege, near our university. For many years I played badminton in which I even became champion in the last year. However, you should always stop at your top, or when you break a wrist.

The latter happened. After this I spent some years in the gym, but since I am studying at the TU/e my sport life has been put on the back burner.

The choice for Mechanical Engineering was not an easy one. I was always convinced that I would go for Electrical Engineering. However, a very enthusiastic student during the information days on the

TU/e convinced me that it is better for your social life (and if you have broader interests) to go and study Mechanical Engineering.

During my first year at the TU/e I lived at home, merely because this was already close to the university. After my first year, and I can recommend this to anyone, I moved out and got my own room somewhere else in Eindhoven.

Since studying went far better than planned, after two and a half years on the university I still did not miss any ECTS, I decided that I wanted to do something more. During my third year I joined the Symposium committee in which we managed to reach out to many companies and students to have a fantastic day. It was during this period that I became enthusiastic about our Association and the idea to once become a member of the Board was born.

After some months of preparation my six fellow Board members and I are now the “Vigoureuze” 61st Board of our Association. As I said earlier, this year I will be the Chairman. Besides the fact people know me as Chairman, I am also familiar with the title of the “rullest” man of Eindhoven. If you have questions why this name is so applicable to me, visit the Simonkamer in the early hours of a ‘brakke’ Friday (and yes, I know this is a pleonasm). Of course, if Friday morning is not the best moment to voluntarily get out of bed and see me, you can come by at any other moment to ask your questions about everything you want to know regarding the Association!

Sjors Boutkan Secretary and Commissioner of Extraordinary Affairs ‘Melken doe je zo’ A famous quote of a song, which I can’t get enough of. My love for machines, tractors and farms is what brought me here to the University and the Association is what kept me here. If we haven’t met in person yet and you aren’t yet familiar with the song, continue reading!

The 28th of May in 1997 is when the magic happened. I joined the 7 billion people on earth, ready to enjoy life. I lived as far away as possible from Eindhoven; the peak of North Holland in a small farmer village called Wieringerwerf.

Ever since I was a little kid I was interested in everything that has to do with Mechanical Engineering. No pen could last longer than a week before I took it apart to see how it worked. Lego creations were the foundation of my youth and my little go-kart received many upgrades and extra functions. But most of all me and my sister helped my father a lot with his work on our two tractors.

This is where my passion for tractors started. I used to help out during the potato harvest season at the farm of my uncle, until I reached the age where I could drive the machines myself. I still do all of that during the holidays.

I finished my primary school without many problems. Then the adventures of high school came by, which was located practically in my back yard. I’ve always enjoyed kicking a ball at our local football association and I also managed to climb the mountain Alpe d’Huez six times for charity, because cancer sadly enough plays a big role within our family.

After my time at the home front, the hard moment came where I had to choose a study and of course a city. The choice for Mechanical Engineering was easy, but the location proved to be a bit difficult. At the end I chose Eindhoven because of the nice ambiance of the faculty and the charms of Brabant.

I’ve had a room in Eindhoven since day one, which allowed me dive into the student life directly. Simon Stevin was a great way to help me discover the student life. I first joined the BeunwarsCie, which gave me a good sense of what Simon Stevin has to offer for all the members. Both the CWC and the BACo were my next steps within the Association. My love for both brute hard work and beer were combined.

After half a year I got the opportunity to take part in the 61st Board. Now I can express my love for beer and long letters as both Secretary and Commissioner of Extraordinary Affairs. My duties this year are keeping the administration and communication of the association up to date as well as maintaining De Weeghconst and the beer supply. I will make sure all the members can enjoy their study while having some space for recreation!

P.S.: John Deere tractors are rubbish

My school period went pretty smooth. I went to elementary school in Sprang-Capelle and after that to secondary school in Waalwijk. Halfway through secondary school, the choice for the next step came closer. The choice for a life in Eindhoven was not easily made. I started looking at less technical studies, but I was missing the practical part there. However, in the end I knew I wanted to do both a practical and technical study and this resulted in the delightful choice for Mechanical Engineering.

I decided early on that I wasn’t going to travel between my hometown and Eindhoven. I wanted to start a life in Eindhoven and I moved into a student house directly. When I started studying, I decided to join the AcCie at W.S.V. Simon Stevin and organized diverse activities with a group of six freshmen students. That year, I have experienced that the Association was offering more than just selling books. After one year I found my place in the Association and decided to join other committees. To live up to my decisions I joined the European trip committee, the girls committee in the second year and I’m still part of the Gala committee at the moment.

During my second year, the idea of doing a board year arose. The last months were part of the handover period and now I can officially say I’m the Treasurer of the Association! This means I take care of all financially related things/stuff of the Association. With the seven of us, we are facing a beautiful year and I hope I will see you in the Simonkamer for a cup of tea (or coffee).

Sifra Kramer Treasurer Hallo met Sifra!

A phrase often heard in the Simonkamer. Not because I pick up the phone relatively much or shout a lot through my living room: the Simonkamer. No, I am not even the person who tends to shout it most of the time. For quite some time now the rest of the Board and other people from the Simonkamer speak out the phrase with a voice as deep as possible because it just sounds perfect. So you heard the name Sifra sometimes now, but let me introduce the corresponding member of the Board.

I was born and raised in Sprang-Capelle, a small village in Brabant near the Efteling. As a little girl, I used to go to the Efteling a lot, where my favorite activity was visiting the fairytale forest. I also started doing gymnastics as little girl, but I decided to leave my hometown club and join the regional team when a regional sports hall was built. This resulted in a busy schedule consisting of nine training hours a week and travelling across the county for the competition days. After a knee injury at the end of sixth grade I was forced to quit the sport. My new life in Eindhoven started almost directly afterwards, so I didn’t have time to be bored at all.

Since also I have been a part of this Board for a while now, it is about time I give you a short introduction about myself. My name is Jerome Seelen and I am the Commissioner of Education of the 61st board of the Mechanical Study Association Simon Stevin. I will help everyone with education related problems and make sure the education of the TU/e keeps on improving. But enough about that, for now I will tell you something about who I am.

I was born in Wijlre, a small town in the south of Limburg. I started on the elementary school ‘Op de Tien Bunder’. Finishing elementary school I already wanted to leave the farmland and move to the city. Finishing VWO on the ‘Sintermeertencollege’ even the city Heerlen was too small, too boring and especially too “Limburg”. Moving to Eindhoven and start living on my own, was another step further. Unfortunately escaping Limburg did not mean escaping my accent since everyone could hear my Limburgs accent. While I never really spoke Limburgs in Limburg, even after four years I still have my noticable accent.

Starting Mechanical Engineering in the summer of 2013, the most important thing was passing my first year. After 45 ECTS in my first year, the student world opened and a new era began.

I found the perfect student house: ‘Huize Sletrick’. With twelve students in the house, we organize a house party every year and go on trips throughout the Netherlands. I also started play futsal (it’s like football, but then indoors) with the ‘Bassie en Adriaan Boys’ in the lunchbreaks and started rowing at E.S.R. Thêta. After half a year I quit rowing, but continued playing futsal. In my third year I became a member of ‘Rhethoricadispuut Tau’ to improve my eloquence and my student life even more. Last year I became an active member of Simon Stevin by joining the ‘Symposium Committee’ with four other students. This meant setting up an amazing event for students and companies in Igluu.

Adventures – An unusual, exciting, and possibly dangerous activity, such as a trip or experience, or the excitement produced by such an activity. Hopefully beside the possible danger, I am going to organize a lot of adventures this year as Commissioner for Excursions and write about them in the Simon Ster as the Editor in Chief. Since most of you may not know me very well, I have some nice stories to tell you about myself.

However at some point you will have to go to school, maybe put yourself to use and learn something, and so I did. At the end of my primary school I decided to continue my education on the Gymnasium Juvenaat. Although I went through six years of obligatory Latin, it was still a pity that I had to leave the people there and look for the next big step: a study.

Since math and physics always came easy and had my interest easier than other subjects, the choice for a Technical University was easily made. However, younger me always said he wanted to study architecture and it was only in the last years of high school that I discovered Mechanical Engineering. A challenging study, where you keep it more to the practical application of the theory: Nice. With the choice made for the amazing study full of steel, bikes and welding, the next big decision came: Delft or Eindhoven. After a long doubt, it was the fact that I would still live in Brabant that settled my decision. A decision I absolutely not regret these days (they don’t have W.S.V. Simon Stevin there, a pity)!

On the 8th of October in 1997 my mother decided it was a good idea to put me into the world. This happened to be in a place called Bergen op Zoom, the city I lived in for my entire youth. The few years as a child were quite relaxing: You get yourself a first

Because going by train was an absolute no-go due to the immensely long time I would spend in the train every day, I started living in Eindhoven from day one. Very soon I made the decision to join the W.S.V. by being a member of the Land Yachting Committee.

By being a member of the 61st Board, I am making my student life complete. The choice of putting your study on hold for a year and doing something else brings quite the benefits: Meeting new people, learning a lot about education and probably drinking more than I ever did before. I know all the answers to your questions concerning education, books and finding the most tasty beers in Eindhoven.

Learning to weld as a freshman was a nice thing to be able to contribute in the committee and an awesome thing to be able to do. One of many things you can learn at Simon Stevin.

In my second year I stayed at the Land Yachting Committee and joined the Crafting Committee as well. Together with eight other members of the committee we set up a course for students to craft a clock, where participants could make and design it themselves. Besides the learning and committees, I enjoy doing sports as well, especially surfing and basketball. So what do you do when you are an active member of Simon Stevin but it doesn’t even have its own basketball team? Exactly, you set up one yourself with some other people who are into the sport as well.

And there it was, the BasCo was created.

Now as a member of the Board I want to set up as much interesting career activities as possible and produce fascinating editions of the Simon Ster. If you have questions about either one of these things or just want to have a talk about the awesome adventures you had (maybe those stories involve some ‘pils’), you can always drop by in the Simonkamer!

Pim Bals Commissioner of External Affairs The Board, are they also doing something else than going to parties and drinking coffee for most of the day? From the outside it looks pretty fun, but what truly lies beneath it? For me was this one of the things I had no answer to as a first year student and have experienced it just recently.

Enfin, let me introduce myself first. My name is Pim Bals and this year I am the Commissioner of External Affairs of the Vigoureuze 61st Board of W.S.V. Simon Stevin. As we speak I have already dealt with twenty years of my life from which the first few mostly took place in Dongen. The interest for technique was actually already sparked during my time at elementary school, which developed itself later at high school. This has caused that the choice later on for Mechanical Engineering was made rather quickly.

However, the choice which university it would be was of a longer duration. After a long period of deliberation, the “City of Light” won the battle and it is a choice I still do not regret to this day.

Despite it does not look like it the last couple of months, when I was young I filled my time mostly with sports and being way to active, compared to how much I sport these days. When I was a little kid and roughly one meter smaller than I am today, I could already be found with a basketball in my hands and was running through various sport complexes in the Netherlands with a big smile. Unfortunately with the change of studying in a different city the basketball team was one of the first things which I dropped. Luckily, squash and (yet again) basketball with the BasCo quickly filled this emptiness. Besides my activities in Eindhoven, it is easy to amuse me by putting a board beneath my feet, both on the mountaintops and the waves in the sea.

When I started in my first year, living in Eindhoven was not something I saw myself doing right away. Seen afterwards this actually was a tiny (read: large) mistake, because after some weeks it star-

ted to irritate to miss the train (also known in Dutch as the “gele Burgerrups”) and not having to sleep with others when a cool party was given once again. Although I was already somewhat active inside the Association, the true student in me opened up as soon as I had my own place which resulted in a more difficult continuation of the study. Despite all the fuss with committees and the corresponding nights out, I somehow managed to keep up with the progress of how it is supposed to go. This led ultimately to the consciousness that being a student should not go at such a tempo. Although I never imagined myself doing a year as a Board member, it became quite interesting halfway through my second year: Living the student life for a longer period of time, while making yourself useful and learning a lot!

Hoisted in a purple polo we defied the duty period which ultimately resulted in me being able to sign contracts since the 14th of September as the Commissioner of External Affairs! This is of course very useful since the Commissioner of Excursions and I will go on a lot of company visits for sponsorship conversations, in order to make sure that students are aware of all the options they have after graduation. The beautiful part about this, is that this brings in money which can be invested in organizing fun activities where I would like to see you as well! To conclude, I would like to thank you for making it this far in my shortened biography and finish with the now common sentence: “Thank you for meeting me. I hope we can mean a lot to each other upcoming year and speak each other more often. Good bye!”

repair anything you like. From things as simple as patching your tire, to building a motorized beer crate. In De Werf you can also find the land yachting fleet. The fleet currently exists of seven, almost eight, working Land Yachts, build and maintained by my first-year’s-love: the Committee of Land yachting. Or as we say it in Dutch: De Zeilwagencommissie.

When I started studying at the TU/e, W.S.V. Simon Stevin directly came into my spotlight. I wanted to do something aside from my study. Apart from all theoretical skills I also wanted to work with my hands, which lead me to the Committee of Land Yachting. In my second year I stepped it up a notch by also joining the Crafting Committee alongside of the Committee of Land Yachting. Being active at W.S.V. Simon Stevin, made me also come in touch with a group of gentlemen that lighted the fire inside of me. These good looking students form the E.W.D. Hephaestus, which is the fraternity of W.S.V. Simon Stevin.

Besides all the activities in Eindhoven I also have a close group of friends in my hometown, which I have known for most time of my life. Once in a while when I have time to go home to see my parents, brother, sister, girlfriend and friends everything is just like old-times. When still living at home I picked up two hobbies of mine, which are playing guitar and playing basketball.

Roelof Mestriner Commissioner of Land Yachting and Vice-Chairman Hey there, cycle menders! Good to see that you are interested in our own magazine, the Simon Ster. My name is Roelof Mestriner, and since the 14th of September 2017 I can say proudly that I am a member of the 61st Board of W.S.V. Simon Stevin. A mere 19 years ago I was born in a little village called Buurse, close to the German border in a region called ‘Twente’; yes, from the other Technical University. I get this question asked a lot: “Why have you come to the TU/e, while you could have also gone to the University Twente?”. My answer has changed a lot in the years.

From having a better industry in Eindhoven, to wanting to live on my own. I think I can now safely say that it is because there is no W.S.V. Simon Stevin in Twente!

Many of you might wonder what W.S.V. Simon Stevin does and what this Board of her is doing the whole day together with all other ‘coffee-drinking-riffraff’. To keep it short: we organize all sorts of activities for every type of Mechanical Engineering student and keep the Association running. As Vice-Chairman I will lay an eye on what Sem James, our Chairman, does. Furthermore as Commissioner of Land Yachting I am responsible for our own workshop called “De Werf”. In this place you can make, build or

Together with Lex and Pim we also set up the BasCo in our second year, which is our own Mechanical Engineering basketball team in Eindhoven. At this moment I still wanted to do more for the Association, so I decided I wanted to be a Board member for a year.

After an amazing period of preparing and learning together with my six Board-Buddies, I have the honor to carry the Association on my shoulders to even greater levels. We are going to make this year Vigoureus!

De voorgangers Sem James Voorzitter 15 maart 1996 was een redelijk zonnig maar wel aardig koude dag, de dag dat vliegtuigbouwer Fokker failliet ging en ook de dag dat Guus Meeuwis op nummer 1 in de Top 40 stond met het nummer “Per spoor (Kedeng Kedeng)”. Maar dat was niet het enige wat met ‘Kedeng Kedeng’ te maken had. Negen maanden eerder was er een romantisch ‘Kedeng Kedeng’ tussen twee personen, wat later de ouders van onze Voorzitter bleken te worden. Dit resulteerde op eerder genoemde dag in een welgemeend ‘oehoe’ in de slaapkamer van zijn ouderlijk huis. De, zoals hij het zelf laatst uiterst eloquent benoemde, rulste man van Eindhoven was geboren.

Onderzoek leert ons dat de

Voorzitter in zijn jeugdige jaren niet bepaald de meest zuivere en reine persoon op aarde was. Er kon geen dag voorbij gaan of hij had zich weer zo smerig gemaakt dat zijn ouders hem niet eens meer aan wilden raken. Het begon nog redelijk onschuldig met het spelen in de modder, maar het escaleerde al snel naar het bouwen van kunstwerken van bitterballen. Zo erg dat de bitterballen tot in zijn onderbroek te vinden waren. En alsof dat nog niet genoeg was is hij tijdens een kinderfeestje expres heel hard met zijn hoofd in een hondendrol gaan liggen. Wat een belhamel.

Naast deze viezigheid was deze man aardig sportief. Vroeger speelde hij badminton waarbij hij ook nog bizar fanatiek was, echter was hij niet zo goed in deze variant van tennis voor mensen die te langzaam zijn voor de echte sport. Hij verloor dan ook regelmatig en dat kon hij niet zomaar over zijn kant laten gaan.

In plaats van de tegenstander een sportieve hand te geven en samen een glaasje limonade te drinken in de kantine sloeg hij de tegenstander meer dan eens de hersens in met zijn racket. Dit zorgde ervoor dat hij haast door het bestuur voor eeuwig van de club verbannen werd, laten we hopen dat hij zichzelf dit jaar wel in toom kan houden zodat de Algemene Ledenvergadering hem

van rommel. Hopelijk ziet De Weeghconst er komend jaar toch wat netter uit. Wellicht was hij Mind Craft aan het spelen, wat hij speelde om zijn wiskunde te verbeteren. We zetten er zo onze vraagtekens bij.

niet hoeft te royeren. Het ergste mag gevreesd worden gezien het feit dat hij nog steeds zo fanatiek is…

Zoals velen waarschijnlijk al weten heeft de heer James een ontzettend grote mond maar een heel klein schattig hartje, zo kocht hij graag cadeautjes voor iedereen van het geld dat hij van zijn opa en oma kreeg. Dit zien we nog steeds terug in zijn huidige hobby´s, echter zijn het nu geen ijsjes meer voor zijn ouders, broer en zus maar Flügels in de kroeg en flessen Smirnoff Ice voor zijn huisgenoten.

Wat minder schattig is, is zijn gedrag nadat hij een paar van deze drankjes achter de kiezen heeft. Naast het feit dat alcohol het doet lijken alsof hij 60 Duracell batterijen in zijn achterwerk gestopt heeft zorgt het er ook voor dat zijn ware Woenselse sloopaard naar boven komt. Menig studentenhuis heeft het al moeten ontgelden nadat hij zich weer aan de versnaperingen had gewaagd.

Gelukkig heeft hij zich in zijn jeugd al wel uitgebreid beziggehouden met het oefenen van een kwaliteit die hij als Voorzitter natuurlijk zeker moet bezitten, het blaten! Dit deed hij niet door ellenlange speeches te houden op verjaardagen maar door zich in te zetten in de virtuele wereld van Habbo hotel. Hij heeft zichzelf daar zo hoog op weten te werken dat hij mocht blaten als radio-DJ van een Habbo radiozender, hét hoogtepunt uit zijn carrière tot nu toe!

Sjors Boutkan Secretaris en Commissaris Bijzondere Activiteiten Als tweede hebben we een, zoals hij zelf zegt, minder valide persoon, ofwel Sjors Boutkan. Deze jongeman krijgt het altijd voor elkaar om zichzelf kapot te maken, dan doet zijn heup weer pijn, dan zijn enkel, dan heeft hij een snee in zijn hand en natuurlijk zijn schouder waar hij laatst aan geopereerd is. Dat we hem dit jaar niet vaak niet ‘kapot’ ‘tegen zullen komen is iets wat met Sjors wel vast staat.

Over het algemeen staat Sjors bekend als een lieve en behulpzame jongen die graag voor anderen klaar staat. Die behulpzaamheid verdwijnt echter als hij wat op moet ruimen voor zijn moeder, want zoals je op de foto kan zien heeft Sjors niet snel last

Daarnaast heeft Sjors een grote passie voor trekkers. CoBa’s staan er natuurlijk om bekend dat ze niet beunen maar knutselen, maar dit valt te betwijfelen bij Sjors. Met veel plezier haalt deze jongeman de trekker van zijn vader uit elkaar, om vervolgens alle kapotte onderdelen te vervangen, zodat hij er met een big smile op rond kan rijden. Hoe goed hij dit beunen aan zijn trekker ook kan, als een echte werktuigbouwer zijn band plakken is iets wat Sjors nog niet onder de knie heeft. Wel schijnt hij feilloos met zijn skelter en kar achteruit in te kunnen parkeren.

Naast een passie voor trekkers heeft Sjors een misschien nog wel grotere passie voor piepers. Zo gaat het verhaal de rondte dat je hem niet moet vragen welk aardappelras de hoogste atomic packing factor heeft… Tenzij je natuurlijk een uur vermaakt wil worden met de achtergrond van aardappels of benieuwd bent welke aardappel je nu het beste kan gebruiken om friet van te maken.

Mocht je komend jaar een alcoholische versnapering met Sjors willen drinken, let dan wel op hoeveel. Na een avondje drinken met zijn vrienden, herkende hij zijn eigen ouders namelijk niet meer! Hij schijnt met diezelfde vrienden flink wat straatmeubilair verzameld te hebben in het noorden van het land.

Sifra Kramer Penningmeester De enige vrouw tussen de zes mannen is Sifra Kramer, dat ze haar mannetje kan staan is gelukkig wel bekend. Haar broer heeft dit al meerdere malen ondervonden, toen Sifra twee jaar oud was heeft ze hem bijvoorbeeld al een keer hard van de trap geduwd, waarna hij al koprollend van de trap viel.

Als Penningmeester moet ze dit jaar met veel leden in contact komen, wat vroeger niet altijd even makkelijk was. Sifra vond het geen probleem wanneer ze lekker op zichzelf op de camping was, maar als er dan al vriendjes en vriendinnetjes gemaakt waren door haar broer of ouders, wilde ze ineens wel mee. Toen ze ouder werd en meeging naar verschillende feestjes ging het contact met anderen al beter. Zo heeft ze wel eens een jongen versierd op een tentfeest, ze schrok wel toen ze hoorde dat hij verloofd was.

Sifra heeft vaker van zulke gekke sprongen gemaakt, als befaamd turnster wel. Haar ouders namen haar mee door heel Nederland waar ze dan meedeed aan het turn-onderdeel Sprong wat per wedstrijd zo’n 2x 10 seconden duurde en er weer naar huis gereden kon worden. den. Wel kan er gezegd worden dat Sifra de goede commissies begeleid. Al sinds ze een nog kleiner meisje was bakt Sifra graag, haar opa was ook een heuse bakker. Taarten, kruidkoek, ovenschotels, alles bakt ze. Naast de KookCie kan je aan het plaatje hier beneden wel zien waarom ze lid is van het Galacollege.

Helaas voor de mannelijke lezers, ze heeft al een date!

Jerome Seelen Onderwijscommissaris Naast turnen kon Sifra ook nog muziek maken, op een saxofoon wel te verstaan. Dit heeft ze tot ongeveer haar 14e volgehouden, netjes elke ochtend om 7 uur de buren wakker gemaakt!

Wat dit jaar bij Sifra ook een beetje in de weg kan zitten is haar algemene kennis, wat best handig kan zijn als bestuurder van de W.S.V. Ook een talenknobbel heeft deze penningmeester niet. Tijdens een spelletje 30 seconds kan ze dingen nog wel eens op haar eigen manier uitleggen. Zo moest Sifra een keer de Bundesliga uitleggen (de Duitse eredivisie voor de niet-voetballiefhebbers).

Haar uitleg ging als volgt: “Jaa, euhm, euhm, het is iets Duits uit de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Nee echt, het is iets met de oorlog, kom op jongens, raad dan dingen uit de oorlog. Alles wat jullie zeggen lijkt erop”. Om na dertig seconden er door iedereen op te worden gewezen dat het toch echt niks met de oorlog te maken had.

De bestuurder uit het verre Limburg, Jerome, gaat ons hopelijk een beetje goed vertegenwoordigen op het onderwijseiland dit jaar. Opgegroeid op een camping genaamd Stoomzicht, waar hij zijn Limburgs accent heeft aangeleerd. Het communiceren zou nog wel eens moeilijk kunnen worden met zijn bestuur en tijdens alle vergaderingen. Maar mocht dit probleem toch overwonnen worden, hoe zal het leven als Onderwijscommissaris hem dan verder afgaan. Hier volgen een aantal opvallende momenten van Jerome’s vroegere jaren.

Bij een onderwijsvergadering is altijd veel eten aanwezig, maar in zijn jongere jaren lustte Jerome eigenlijk bijna niks. Veel verder dan een boterham met pindakaas kwam hij niet. Dit ging jaren zo door, totdat hij zelf tot de conclusie kwam dat het leven hierdoor wel zeer ongemakkelijk werd. Zeker als je bij je vriendinnetjes langsging en ze moest vertellen dat hij niks lekker vond. Hopelijk

zijn de kroketten die hij dit jaar gaat eten wel lekker, zonde om die te laten liggen.

In tegenstelling tot vaste voedingsmiddelen waren vloeistoffen voor hem een stuk makkelijker om aan te beginnen. Op drie-jarige leeftijd, terwijl hij rustig rondreed op zijn tractortje werd er om de zoveel tijd een tactische stop gehouden bij de salontafel.

Deze locatie was niet voor niets uitgekozen, aangezien hier een flesje bier te vinden was waar hij elke keer een slokje van nam.

Ze zeggen ook niet voor niets jong geleerd oud gedaan. Maar niet te veel drinken want dan loop het slecht af. Zoals te zien is op de foto.

Zelf heeft hij altijd de grens willen verleggen. Niet per se een slechte eigenschap voor een Onderwijscommissaris. Als hij van zijn ouders met zijn driewieler in de tuin mocht rondrijden dan ging hij meteen de straat opzoeken. Helaas had dit ook zijn slechte kanten. Zo ging hij ooit naar een vriend fietsen en had hij iedereen verzekerd dat hij de weg wist. Helaas bleek dit niet het geval te zijn en raakte hij helemaal verdwaald. Hierdoor moesten zijn ouders hem overal zoeken in het dorp. Dit soort praktijken kwamen (komen?) toch wel regelmatig voor. Hopelijk gaat het verzenden van de boeken dit jaar beter en raken die niet verdwaald.

van het Gymnasium Juvenaat, gekleed als een pimp ging Lex naar de schoolfeesten waar zijn harem hem altijd volgde. Momenteel wordt hij nog steeds gevolgd door een van hen, een blonde meid genaamd Lotte. Zij kan door al Lex zijn mankementen heen kijken.

Toen Lex ouder werd, ontdekte hij alcoholische versnaperingen.

Zo dronk de zestienjarige Lex op vakantie eens iets te veel met als gevolg dat hij met een bucket KFC (Lex’ favoriet) op zijn hoofd als superman eindigde.

Om te zorgen dat Lex geen bierbuik krijgt, sport hij fanatiek. Vroeger voetbalde hij al, later heeft hij dat ingeruild voor basketbal waar hij meer talent voor had.

Lex groeide op in Bergen op Zoom, eenmaal ouder verhuisde hij naar de Ranonkelstraat te Eindhoven waar hij er iedere avond een feestje van maakt. Na zo’n feest, dan wel op Stratum, maakt Lex traditiegetrouw al zijn huisgenoten wakker om mee een Turkse pizza te eten. Het is maar goed dat zij wakker worden want anders laat Lex de keuken ontploffen met poedersuiker, rijst of hagelslag.

Als je met Lex op pad gaat, kom je niet onder een excursie uit. Of het nu bij een bedrijf, op Stratum of een in een random dorp in Friesland is, avontuurlijk zal het worden! Gelukkig heeft Lex de eigenschap om alles met selfies vast te leggen zodat niemand iets hoeft te missen.

Pim Bals Commissaris Externe Betrekkingen

Lex Verberne Excursiecommissaris en Hoofdredacteur Huisorgaan Mocht het je nog niet zijn opgevallen, er lopen al een tijdje twee jongemannen strak in pak rond in de Simonkamer die zo proberen op te vallen bij mogelijke sponsoren. Een van die jongens is Lex Verberne, de Excursiecommissaris. Hij staat bekend als die jongen die overal allergisch voor is, maar er is natuurlijk meer..

Wie is hij nu echt?

Er is een ding waar hij zeker niet allergisch voor is, schoenen.

Lex heeft een groot assortiment, van nette puntschoenen tot blauwe krokodillenleren sneakers, hier is menig ID’er jaloers op.

Zijn aparte kledingstijl viel ook al goed in de smaak bij de dames

Wie o wie is toch die jongeman die we met enige regelmaat de Simonkamer in en uit zien rennen? Soms gekleed in een net jasje samen met collega Lex onderweg naar een van onze sponsoren, maar misschien iets vaker gehuld in een uitstraling van brakheid.

Deze in Dongen getogen jongeman is Pim Bals, de nieuwe Commissaris Externe Betrekkingen!

Wat weinig mensen weten is dat Pim ooit als violist heeft opgetreden, er zitten dus wat verborgen culturele roots in deze jongeman. Alhoewel, na 10 lessen ging zijn elektrische gitaar wel op marktplaats...

Verder was hij fervent basketballer en dan ook deel van de BasCo. Hij hoopte net zo groot en sterk te worden als de echte mannen uit de NBA. Misschien zou dit hem wat geluk opleveren bij de vrouwen. Dat liet helaas nog even op zich wachten, als we zijn vrienden mogen geloven.

“Na jaren van afwijzing en intense teleurstelling besloot Pim dat het tijd werd voor een nieuwe aanpak. Hij ontwikkelde een techniek, geïnspireerd door verschillende voorbeelden uit de natuur, waarmee het in theorie niet meer mis kón gaan en hij eindelijk zijn eerste meisje aan de haak zou slaan. In het zonnige Albufeira was het eindelijk zo ver: hij ging ervoor! Onder toeziend oog van zijn beste vrienden, sloeg hij zijn eerste meisje aan de haak met zijn geperfectioneerde “paringsdans.” De vreugde die dit opleverde bij zijn vrienden, stak al snel de hele club aan en nog voor Pim het doorhad stonden alle aanwezige tieners in de club te juichen en joelen.

Trots als een pauw zocht Pim oogcontact met zijn vrienden; de toon van de vakantie was gezet.”

Natuurlijk werken dergelijke paringsdansen niet even goed bij iedere recruiter, dus hoe gaat Pim hen om de vingers winden? Uiteindelijk is deze jongeman toch samen met de Excursiecommissaris verantwoordelijk voor de sponsorinkomsten van de Vereniging!

Pim “de paringsdanser” Bals, houdt er net als paradijsvogels van zich in bijzondere en opvallende tenues te hullen. Het begon allemaal met een grijze polo die gedurende de tijd steeds meer scheuren kreeg, deze droeg hij als “foet” bij E.W.D. Hephaestus. Nog maar net was hij van deze polo af, toen hij deze verruilde voor een paarse polo met aankomend Bestuur erop. Tegenwoordig kun je hem net zoals een deel van zijn voorgangers overal op het TU/e terrein tegenkomen. Een lastoorts in de hand en op zijn gezicht een zwoele blik; het gaat natuurlijk om de posters van de Wervingsdagen! Daar vervult Pim de rol van Voorzitter van de Raad van Toezicht.

Laten we hopen dat hij met al deze drukte genoeg tijd heeft voor zijn functie bij Simon. Als we zijn verhalen over de introweek 2016 moeten geloven, kan Pim voor alles tijd maken. Zonder dat iemand hem heeft kunnen missen, staat Pim alweer in de ballenbak met een glimlach op zijn gezicht!

Roelof Mestriner Zeilwagencommissaris en Vice-Voorzitter Roelof Mestriner, ook wel bekend als Rullof Mestrini, mag komend jaar ook aangesproken worden met Harpsleutel. Er is ook nog een andere naam waarmee we hem wellicht aan mogen spreken. Vroeger wilde Roelof namelijk helemaal geen Roelof heten, maar Karel. Hoewel we tegenwoordig altijd

grappen maken over het feit dat we voorzichtig moeten zijn met Sjors en Lex zodat ze niet uit elkaar vallen, was dat vroeger zo bij Roelof. Hij stootte altijd overal zijn hoofd of tenen tegenaan en had altijd her en der pijntjes. Een andere onhandige eigenschap was dat hij heel vaak compleet gedachteloos spullen op kon pakken om ze dan op een willekeurige plek weer neer te leggen.

Vroeger wilde Roelof heel graag een blauwtongskink, een hagedis met een blauwe tong waarvan de grootste soort zo’n 60 centimeter lang kan worden volgens Wikipedia. Ook leert de online encyclopedie ons dat de goedkopere exemplaren, wilde dieren uit Indonesië, regelmatig agressief zijn. Niet heel raar dat zijn moeder het een beter plan vond om een kat te kopen. De rode kater, Beertje, is helaas niet mee naar Eindhoven verhuisd en woont nog steeds bij de ouders van Roelof in Buurse.

Ook Roelof heeft de leeftijd gehad waarbij je in de zomervakantie met je vrienden naar een jongerencamping gaat. In het geval van Roelof: camping Terpstra op Terschelling. Roelof had als echte stoere jongen natuurlijk een super handig zakmes meegenomen om allerlei dingen mee door te snijden. Bierdopjes schijnen echter niet heel makkelijk te snijden en toen Roelof een poging waagde is het zakmes dichtgeklapt met de pink van Roelof er nog tussen.

Zijn pink was zo erg gehavend dat hij terug moest naar het vasteland om het daar in een ziekenhuis op te laten knappen.

Dat Roelof een hele slimme jongen was dat werd al heel snel duidelijk. Als kind van 4 rekende hij al uit hoeveel zakgeld zijn nichtje op jaarbasis kreeg toen hij hoorde wat ze per week kreeg. Toen zijn ouders vroegen hoe hij dat deed zij hij: “dat is helemaal niet moeilijk hoor, daar heb ik een machientje voor”. Ouders: en waar heb je dat machientje? Roelof: “nou gewoon, in mijn hoofd”. Naast rekenen kon hij ook al vroeg filosoferen, zo vroeg hij zich als 5-jarig kind al de zin van het bestaan af “want we zouden uiteindelijk toch allemaal dood gaan”. Helaas was hij nog net niet slim genoeg om deze vraagstukken ook te beantwoorden. Dit zat hem ’s avonds voor het slapengaan natuurlijk het meeste dwars, waardoor hij jarenlang een schriftje in de buurt van zijn bed heeft gehad om zijn filosofische vraagstukken letterlijk van zich af te schrijven.

Bachelor Final Project

Detecting driver intervention in an autonomous vehicle’

Some Bachelor Final Projects include a lot of theoretical work that only pays off in the long term. What is so nice about Bram Grolleman his BFP, is that it concerns applied research and that it has been followed up immediately by an actual implementation of his designed system. At this moment, the project is almost ready for scientific publication.

Eva Eggels Whether it depends on parking or driving in a traffic jam, cars do not necessarily need a driver anymore. With each new task that a car can perform on its own, fully autonomously operating cars are a step closer to reality. The parties involved in the development of autonomously driving vehicles do not stand alone in this. The Dutch government wants to stimulate further research on self-driving vehicles and wants to make sure that the Netherlands are one of the front-runners in this area. Eventually the implementation of these vehicles will improve traffic flows, will prevent accidents and will lead to a reduced fuel consumption.

The challenge Before autonomously operating cars can be used extensively, many challenges need to be addressed. The infrastructure has to be modified, adjustments should be made to the liability law and the cars themselves should be optimised. This is where Bram his BFP comes into play. The project has its origin in the i-CAVE Program,

the Integrated Cooperative Automated Vehicles Program, that is going on at the TU/e. He has worked on a way in which the driver can intervene when the software of the self-driving car does not make the right decision. Simply taking the steering wheel and trying to move it in the desired direction does not work. There has to be a way for the car to recognize that the driver wants to take over.

Where to begin Bram had to start from scratch with designing a system for this.

Starting points were the available sensors and actuators that were already implemented in the car to make it run. This was preferred over adding additional sensors or buttons. His idea includes a motor that applies torque to the bottom of the steering column and a sensor that measures the steering rack angle. The engine causes high frequent vibrations in the steering wheel. These vibrations can be measured with the sensor. If the hands of the

driver are laid onto the wheel, the measured vibration changes.

By this, the system knows that the driver wants to intervene. From then on, all automatic systems are switched off and the driver is responsible for manoeuvring the car.

The way to do it There exist two ways to detect the presence of the driver’s hands on the wheel. One way is based on phase shift and another way is based on anti-resonances. Models in Simulink pointed this out. The resulting Bode plots of these models can be seen below. All three shown situations, hands-off, light hands-on and strong hands-on, show significantly different graphs. Both ways of recognizing the hands of the driver on the wheel were elaborated in the BFP, since they both are relatively simple.

The choice for the topic Bram has chosen this specific topic for his BFP, since with this topic, it was possible to obtain some more hands-on experience in addition to the theoretical knowledge he already had. The project was quite vague initially. As a consequence, some students that started their BFP at the same time as Bram, decided to not choose the subject. This improved his chances for actually obtaining the project. It was not an easy BFP to start with, since little or no material was available to proceed with. During his literature research some data became available to work with. From then on, the research became more concrete. Applying the theoretical knowledge in practice turned out to be harder than expected, but as a result Bram gained more insight in the creation of bode plots and in how certain variables relate to each other.

The next steps During the completion phase of the project, Bram his supervisor pointed out that his results were interesting and could lead to a scientific publication. This past summer, more substance was given to the publication. The work that needed to be done included boarding up the mathematical models and performing experiments. These are currently carried out in the Automotive Engineering Science laboratory. The designed system will be implemented in one of the three Renault Twizys over there. If the experiments lead to positive results as well, nothing stands in the way of the publication. This brings the implementation of autonomously driving vehicles again one step further.

Growth at the TU/e

A fresh start at our TU/e. Plenty of first year students came in enthusiastically to follow their very first lecture. Some of the early birds took a seat in an empty lecture hall, but very quickly all seats were taken.

Roxanne Boehlé However, studying does not only consist of listening to lectures.

There are also courses with OGO based education. Unfortunately, these groups are becoming busier, which causes stress amongst students. Questions are rising: will there be enough room for the students in lectures, will there be enough room for OGO classes, will there be enough staff for all the students, but most importantly: is there enough room to fix all the bikes?

The problem The TU/e has growth issues and that is not coming along easy.

Faculties are preparing themselves to add a cap on their studies with numeri fixi. Is this something we want? Do we want to have more students, or do we want to be a university that is smaller and more personal? What is possible with the budget and housing?

That’s where the University Council comes along.

Our opinion So, what do we think about this development of the growing university? There should be enough space for every student to spend their time at the university properly. We think that the consequences of the growth cannot be solved by livestreaming lectures, and scheduling the courses should be done properly. After all, moving many lectures to the evening would be undesirable. The TU/e should remain our quality and identity while we are growing, and make the right decisions regarding to the caps of faculties. It is important that students, who are experiencing the same as all the other students of the TU/e, have input when solutions have to be found. The well-being of the student is important, especially because there are high expectations of the students of the TU/e.

Students should always have enough space to do what they want to do, to develop how they want to develop, and to be whoever they want to be.

University Council The University Council monitors policies and plans that are developed by the TU/e. These developments can have enormous consequences for current and prospective students. This is why Groep-één envisions the preconditions of a good university to be guaranteeing the quality of education, and room for every student to develop themselves and feel at home at the university. Groepéén has five seats in the University Council and consists of the following students: Neeltje Voesenek, Yoram Meijaard, Reijn van den Burg, Erik van Heijst, and Roxanne Boehlé.

An interesting visit at Prodrive Technologies

It was a cloudy Monday afternoon when a dozen well-dressed students gathered at the Eindhoven central bus station to wait for bus 406 to visit Prodrive Technologies in the Science Park.

The number for the bus, 406, number might sound familiar to those who have had to decorate their rooms recently, since it will also take you straight to Ikea, but one stop ahead at Science Park East is where we could find the entrance to Prodrive’s main building.

Emphasis on “could”, since actually finding the entrance turned out to be quite a challenge as Google Maps send us on our way through the wilderness of Ekkersrijt. It was only after convincing group leader Lex that some good old fashioned “slootjespringen” (leaping a ditch) was absolutely necessary, that we could continue our backstage stroll to the entrance.

Then it was time to split the group up in three parts for a guided tour around the facility. Armed with white lab coats and fashionable electrostatic discharge shoe straps we visited the various manufacturing plants, fully automated assembly systems and test setups. Amongst other impressive things, one that stood out was a setup for German elevator manufacturer ThyssenKrupp, who are designing a revolutionary elevator able to move both vertically and horizontally with only magnetic propulsion. The extreme safety regulations being enforced for such systems, made for an interesting challenge Prodrive gladly took on. Another interesting experience was setting foot inside the anechoic chamber, where all kinds of waves are absorbed which provides a close to ideal, but for humans eerily silent, test environment.

An introduction A first presentation by Richard Treuren gave a good general introduction of the company, before expanding on how students from all different stages of certain studies are able to end up working at Prodrive. It also gave a good insight in the various specialization fields employees can work on, and the idea that all mechanical engineers are busy CAD drawing in NX, their entire career was quickly dismissed. The second presentation was by Matthijs Hanegraaf, who told us about his internship and current graduation project in the field of Material Technology, both done at Prodrive. His presentation made it clear how fast an idea can become reality at the company, by showing us some test samples among other things.

The ending Our visit was concluded with a short presentation about Prodrive career opportunities, met with great interest from the visiting students (who may or may not have been extra persuaded by a hint of free iPhones and notebooks for employees). We returned home satisfied, most students with a clear fresh image about the actual activities of a company with an already quite familiar name.

Course Evaluations

As Commissioner of Education, course evaluations are one of the most important aspects of the job. Every course is evaluated on the basis of the Student Councils and the Course Evaluations. These evaluations are discussed with members of the Program Committee and discussed with the teachers to see what can be improved and how it can be improved.

To improve the courses and other facilities of the university, students´ opinions are crucial. In Student Councils, students give their opinion freely in an informal meeting. After these meetings, the teacher is contacted to make sure he or she knows what the opinion is from students and makes sure the advises, made by the students, are heard and translated into the lectures.

In a Student Council five to ten students from each year of the Bachelor and Master represent their year. You can join the Student Councils yourself, give your opinion and learn a lot. In these meetings you learn to discuss your opinion with other students in an informal setting. Furthermore, you learn to discuss your opinions and ideas for improvement with teachers in an infomal and formal setting. This teaches you to make your arguments strong and change the education in courses to a better level.

In the section below you find three courses evaluated by the course evaluation and the input from students during Student Councils.

You can find the response rate, grade of the course, average hours spent, the feedback and improvements for next year. With 2017 coming to an end, Christmas is coming. For most students a moment to visit their parents again and most importantly regain some vitamins during the Christmas brunches, lunches and dinners. But now you don’t even have to leave your home anymore! Surprise your roommates and become a chef yourself with this student-proof Christmas dinner!

Planning Planning is one of the most important things while making three course dinner.

To prevent yourself from busting your ass off the entire evening and not being able to enjoy the evening, make a planning and prepare. The recipes are chosen in such a way that a lot of prepping can be done the previous day. The soup can be made a day before the dinner. Also the beef wellington can be made up until step 16 the day before. In the morning you can prep the dessert. So you only have to bake it just before you’re about to eat it. In the morning you can also prepare the stoofperen, so you only have to warm it up before serving.

Budget tips Some ingredients are quite expensive, and students are not rich. So there are a few options to reduce costs. Instead of beef tenderloin you can also use round steak, Jewish fillet or roast beef.

Bell Pepper Soup This very tasty, and actually quite simple, soup is a nice variation on the standard tomato soup everyone loves. You need the following ingredients: • 600 gr bell pepper • 600 gr fresh tomatoes • 1 red onion • 3 cloves of garlic • ½ red Spanish pepper • A hand of basil leaves • A spoon of balsamic vinegar • Three table spoons of extra vierge olive oil • 1 ¼ L vegetable stock • 200 g Greek yoghurt (optional)

Step by Step: 1. Set the oven on 180 °C 2. While you wait until the oven is heated up, cut all bell peppers, the onion, the garlic cloves and tomatoes into slices and put those together with the basil leaves on a cooking plate. Mix the vinegar and olive oil together and sprinkle the vegetables. If you have a slow oven, do some training exercises in the kitchen, burn those Christmas calories!

3. Put the plate In the oven for 45 minutes, while turning the vegetables regularly 4. Afterwards, push them through a sieve to remove the skins. As a mechanical engineer, you may want to do this with your heavy kitchen machinery, but this makes the soup less tasty, use your muscles!

5. Get the soup to your desired thickness with the bouillon, and make it even tastier with some salt and pepper. Heat the soup in a pan for a couple of minutes and voilà, ready!

6. Serve hot with a dot of Greek yoghurt and some basil leaves on top

Oven Roasted Vegetables

Ingredients: • 2 bunches of radishes • 1 bunch of carrots • 4 parsnips • 250 gr cherry tomatoes • 2 red onions • 4 sweet potatoes • 12 garlic cloves • Olive oil • 4 rosemary twigs • 5 thyme twigs • Pepper & Salt

Step by Step: 1. Preheat the oven at 200 °C. 2. Peel the sweet potatoes and cut them like fries.

3. Wash the carrots and if needed peel them.

But them in the same size as the sweet potatoes.

4. Peel the parsnips and cut them into fries half the length of the sweet potatoes.

5. Cut the red onions in half rings.

6. Remove the top part of the radishes and tomatoes and wash them.

7. Put the radishes, carrots, parsnips, cherry tomatoes, onions, sweet potatoes and garlic cloves into a baking tray. Make sure you don’t stack it too much, since you will only steam the vegetables like that.

8. Drizzle some olive oil over the vegetables.

9. Add the rosemary and thyme twigs and season with pepper and salt.

10. Mix everything and put it for about 1 hour in the oven.

Dutch Cooking Pears

Ingredients: • 12 cooking pears • 1 cinnamon stick • 1 lemon • 30 gr sugar • 750 ml (cheap) port wine • 1 bay leaf • 4 cloves

Step by Step: 1. Peel the cooking pears but don’t remove the stalks.

2. Put them in a pan with all the stalks up.

3. Use a vegetable peeler to obtain lemon zest from the lemon.

4. Add the port wine, sugar, cinnamon, lemon zest, bay leaf and cloves.

5. Add water until the pears are covered in fluid up till their stalks.

6. Let it boil for a few minutes. Then turn the heat lower and let the pears simmer for about 40-50 minutes.

7. You can check if the pears are finished by piercing with a fork.

8. Remove the pears from the pan when they are done.

9. Turn up the heat and boil down the liquid until it has the texture of gravy.

Potato Croquettes

Ingredients: • 750 gr potatoes • 40 gr butter • 3 eggs • 2 tablespoons milk • 15 ml mustard • Bread crumbs • 3 tablespoons flour • Optional: replace the mustard with 50 gr parmesan cheese, half a table spoon of garlic powder and 1 green/spring onion

Step by Step: 1. Make mashed potatoes and add 2 beaten egg yolks, the flour, (heated) milk and butter to the mix.

Add mustard, pepper and salt to your flavor.

2. Let the potatoes chill in the fridge for 1 hour covered by cling film.

3. Roll potato croquettes and dip them first in the bread crumbs, then in beaten egg.

4. Fry the croquettes for 5 minutes in the fryer on 180 °C (6 maximum) 5. You can also bake the croquettes on 200 °C in the oven for 20 minutes.

Beef Wellington

Ingredients: • Butter • 1000 gr beef tenderloin • Pepper & salt • Mustard • 400 gr chestnut mushrooms • 1 onion

• 3 garlic cloves • 2 twig of thyme • 12 thin slices of Parma ham • (Fresh) Puff pastry (30x40 cm) • 2 egg

Step by Step: 1. Pat the beef tenderloin dry and season with salt and pepper.

2. Meanwhile melt some butter in a frying pan.

Wait until it stops bubbling.

3. Sear the beef tenderloin on all sides.

4. Take it out of the pan and coat it with mustard.

5. Cut finely the thyme, onion and garlic.

6. Melt some butter in the pan and add the thyme, onions and garlic.

7. Meanwhile chop the mushrooms into small pieces. You can also use a food processor for this.

8. Add the mushrooms to the pan and fry until they’re soft (about 7 minutes).

9. Season with pepper and salt.

10. Make sure the mushroom mash does not get too wet. Drain of some of the fluids if necessary.

11. Take a big part of cling film and put it on your counter 12. Make two rows of 6 slices of Parma ham and make sure they overlap.

13. Spread your mushroom mash on top of the Parma ham.

14. Now take your beef tenderloin and put it on top of the mushroom mash in the middle.

15. Wrap the beef tenderloin in the Parma ham tightly.

16. Put it in the fridge for about 30 minutes.

17. Preheat the oven at 200 °C. 18. Dust your counter with flour and roll out the puff pastry.

19. Take the wrapped beef tenderloin out of the fridge and unwrap the cling film.

20. Put it on the puff pastry.

21. Split the eggs and cover the edges of the puff pastry with egg yolk.

22. Now wrap the beef tenderloin in the puff pastry. Make sure there is an overlap of at least 3 cm.

23. Put it in a baking tray which is covered with baking paper with the seam in the dough downwards.

24. With leftovers of the puff pastry you can make decorations to put on top.

25. Cover the pastry with the remaining egg yolk.

26. Bake the Beef Wellington 25 to 35 minutes or until the inside has reached the 52 °C. It should still be red on the inside.

Apple crumble Ingredients: • 1 kg apples • 500 gr raspberries (frozen) • 150 gr sugar • 75 gr butter • 100 gr flour • 2 teaspoons grounded cinnamon • 100 gr walnuts • 1 L Vanilla ice cream

Step by Step: 1. Preheat the oven at 200 °C. 2. Place 50 gr of sugar, the butter in cubes and flour in a bowl.

3. Knead the dough until the structure resembles breadcrumbs.

4. Peel the apples and cut them in cubes.

5. Put the apples and 300 gr of the raspberries in a baking tray.

6. Add 25 gr of sugar, walnuts and the cinnamon and mix.

7. Distribute the dough on top.

8. Place in the middle of the oven for 30 minutes until the crumbles are brown.

9. Meanwhile you’re going to make a raspberry sauce. Put the remaining raspberries and sugar in a pan and heat.

10. Let it boil for a few minutes until the berries fall apart, don’t forget to keep stirring.

11. When the apple crumble is ready, serve with ice cream and top it of with the raspberry sauce.

12. Enjoy! This is the best part of a Christmas dinner!

Het nieuwste verenigingsgeschenk: Vincent Op ALV 61.2 is het nieuwste verenigingsgeschenk, genaamd Vincent, aangeboden aan de Vereniging door het zestigste Bestuur. Het geheel draagt de naam Vincent en bestaat uit een eikenhouten opbergdoos waarin een schrijfveer, twee potjes inkt en reservepuntjes voor de schrijfveer zitten. De doos van Vincent is voorzien van een messing lustrumlogo aan de buitenzijde en een, op rood fluweel geborduurd, logo aan de binnenzijde. Met de komst van Vincent is het mogelijk officiĂŤle documenten in Simonwaardige-stijl te ondertekenen.

De naam Vincent vindt zijn oorsprong bij de Onderwijscommissaris van het zestigste Bestuur, Victor. Hij werd na maanden intensief samenwerken met een medewerker van de TU door deze medewerker nog steeds aangesproken als Vincent in plaats van Victor. Dit leidde dermate tot frustratie bij de Onderwijscommissaris (en evenredig veel leedvermaak bij de rest van het Bestuur), dat deze naam nu vereeuwigd is in het Verenigingsgeschenk.

Staut

Het zilt in je smoel

De boer die hem niet kent, eet hem niet. De boer die hem wel kent, eet hem alsof het om aardappelen gaat. Deze staut staat in het teken van de parel van de zee: De oester.

Wablief?

Oesters worden doorgaans op twee manieren geclassificeerd: op afkomst of op vorm. Hoewel oesters overal ter wereld inheems zijn, komt het leeuwendeel van de oesters in Nederland uit eigen land of Frankrijk. Feitelijk gezien is China verreweg de grootste producent van oesters, maar omdat ze daar alles vermalen tot oestersaus – quelle horreur – laten we die buiten beschouwing.

In Frankrijk zijn ze er, net als met wijn, erg goed in om hun oesters een interessante naam te geven, naar gelang waar de oester vandaan komt; bekende gebieden zijn Bretagne en Marennes d’Oléron. Dit is echter vooral een pretentieuze manier om de onwetende klant een vals gevoel van kwaliteit te geven. Het zegt namelijk niets over wat je uiteindelijk naar binnen slurpt. In Nederland zijn we hier een stuk minder goed in. Daar wordt namelijk alles een Zeeuwse oester genoemd, zonder enig onderscheid te maken, waardoor je ook niet weet wat je kunt verwachten.

Beter is het indelen van oesters naar vorm; er zijn grofweg twee variëteiten. De creuse oester is de meest voorkomende, zeg maar de Coca-Cola onder de oesters, en dan is er de platte oester, de evenknie van Rolls-Royce. Dat verschil slaat niet alleen op de oplage, maar ook op de arbeidsintensiviteit die gepaard gaat met de kweek. Waar een creuse oester al na twee tot drie jaar klaar is voor consumptie, kan dit tot zes jaar duren bij een platte oester. Het moge duidelijk zijn waar de platte oester zijn naam aan dankt, terwijl de schelp van de creuse oester een typische uitstulping heeft.

Bas Raes Een andere aanduiding die men dikwijls op oesters aantreft is ‘fines de claires’. Dit betekent dat de oesters na de kweek geraffineerd worden in oude zoutbassins (claires), wat voornamelijk in Frankrijk voorkomt. In dit zoute milieu komen bepaalde algen voor die de oesters een blauw-groene kleur en bijzondere smaak geven.

Minstens zo belangrijk als een goede techniek zijn goede spullen.

Onontbeerlijk is een deugdelijk oestermes met scherpe punt en een lemmet dat grip geeft. De scherpte van het mes brengt wel zekere risico’s met zich mee. De recreatief oestersteker kan een theedoek nemen ter bescherming. Neemt men de zaak echter wat serieuzer dan kiest men voor de maliënkolder handschoen.

Creuse oesters

Inkoop & bewaren Mocht u overgaan tot de aanschaf van een partij oesters, een van de betere beslissingen in uw leven, dan is het zaak om dit bij een goede visboer te doen. Er zijn vele varianten van de oester, maar een stelregel die altijd opgaat is ‘hoe verser, hoe beter’. Maakt u zich verder niet te druk om de oestersoort; ze zijn allemaal buitengewoon smakelijk.

Belangrijker is het bewaren van de oester; als het niet anders kan. Hoewel het wel logisch lijkt, moeten oesters nooit in water bewaard worden. Oesters worden namelijk gekweekt in een specifiek milieu (lees: zout water) en leven van dit water. Legt u ze vervolgens in zoet water dan zal de oester onherroepelijk sterven.

Gelukkig worden oesters haast altijd verkocht in een mandje dat zo dicht zit dat er druk op de schelpen staat. Een prima methode, omdat de oesters zo niet open gaan en langer goed blijven.

Tot aan consumptie kunt u dit mandje het beste in de koelkast zetten. Op deze manier kunnen oesters ruim een week goed blijven. Bij het maken van een inschatting over de versheid van de oester zijn er een aantal dingen om op te letten. Zo moet de oester ruiken naar de zee; N.B. niet naar vis. De oester moet niet uitgedroogd zijn en als de oester open is moet deze naar een tikje op de schelp weer dichtgaan. Mocht dit niet het geval zijn dan kunt u de oester beter links laten liggen.

Openmaken Vooraleer overgegaan kan worden op consumptie moet de verse oester open gemaakt worden. Dit kan voor de ongeoefende oestersteker een hels karwei zijn. Om u een klein beetje op weg te helpen op uw culinaire reis volgt hier een instructie: • Houd de oester goed vast in de hand met de vlakke schelp boven • Klem het mes in het scharnier en wrik de schelphelf met een korte, draaiende polsbeweging van elkaar • Schraap nu met het mes langs de vlakke kant van de schelp, zodat de sluitspier van de oester losgaat. Verwijder dan de bovenste schelp.

Maliënkolder handschoen

Consumptie Hoewel het consumeren van oesters niet gebonden is aan een strenge set étiquette doet u er verstandig aan de oesters in alle eenvoud te eten. Waarbij een te groot deel van de oesters verdwijnt onder een laag gegratineerde kaas of frambozen-vinaigrette kunt u een liefhebber herkennen aan een onbevlekte oester gecombineerd met een goed glas champagne of Chardonnay.

In het bekende naslagwerk: “Hoe hoort het eigenlijk?” van Amy Groskamp-Ten Have staat het volgende geschreven over de als “lastig gerecht” bestempelde oester: De oester, liggend op de helft van de schelp, wordt meestal opgediend op ijs. Mocht de oester nog vast zitten aan de onderschelp dan kan met een oestervork het vlees worden losgemaakt van de schelp. Prik vervolgens de oester op het vorkje en steek de oester in zijn geheel in de mond. Bij een informele gelegenheid mag je de schelp met de vingers oppakken en de oester direct vanaf de schelp naar binnen slurpen.

Een veelgemaakte beginnersfout is om de oester meteen door te slikken. Enorm zonde want hierdoor verwordt een extatische smaakbeleving tot een zout kwakje. Een Zeeuwse tip: neem uw tijd en kauw eerst op de oester; een traktatie voor uw smaakpapillen.

“De oester: een prikkel voor de geest, de zinnen en de liefde” Menig goedgelovige zal het Zeeuwse pareltje kennen als één van de bekendste afrodisiaca -middelen om geslachtsdrift te stimuleren. Casanova - de bekendste minnaar uit de geschiedenisbeschouwde oesters als hét seksmiddel bij uitstek. Hij noemde ze “een prikkel voor de geest, de zinnen en de liefde”. Deze overtuiging liet hij niet links liggen, hij at gemiddeld zo’n 50 exemplaren per dag, met alle gevolgen van dien. Hoewel er nooit wetenschappelijk bewijs is geleverd voor de vermeende correlatie tussen het aantal verorberde oesters en het libido van de consument, is er wel bekend dat oesters een grote hoeveelheid zink bevatten en dat zink een belangrijke rol speelt bij de productie van spermacellen.

Emerging technical tour de force

The new vessel by Van Oord

The crane vessel Werkendam, now under construction, will be the first LNG-powered vessel to join Van Oord’s fleet. The vessel is already taking shape at the Neptune shipyard in Hardinxveld-Giessendam, the Netherlands. Thanks to smart innovations, including the LNG system, the Werkendam will use less fuel and emit less CO­­2 without affecting operational production. How is that possible?

In order to reduce the carbon footprint, Van Oord is researching the use of alternative fuels, such as LNG and biofuel, within the entire fleet. A satisfying and challenging project like the Werkendam gives us a chance to gain new experience.

The excess capacity that may be generated during these activities is stored. These types of activities cause a peak demand for energy, which would normally result in a significant power fluctuation in the engine. Using the energy that is already available precludes these fluctuations.

Cleaner alternative LNG is liquefied natural gas, the main component of which is methane. In comparison with diesel, LNG emits 86% less particulate matter and 72% less nitrous oxide. Despite the fact that it will additionally reduce CO2 emissions by 25%, some of that benefit is negated by the emission of methane. Still, LNG is cleaner than other fossil fuels.

From overcapacity to extra capacity When the vessel is completed, it will be fully powered by LNG, with gas oil as a back-up. LNG engines, in comparison with diesel engines, are less flexible when it comes to load changes.

LNG engines are not designed for major power fluctuations. When the power fluctuates, the vessel should be switched over to gas oil, which is something Van Oord wants to prevent because it causes more pollution. The solution for this has been found in ultracaps.

These batteries can store energy as soon as excess capacity is generated, and can use that excess capacity when it’s needed.

Where does the stored energy in the ultracaps come from? During lifting or dredging operations, the engines generate energy.

Energy-efficient sailing and working

Milestones

The Werkendam is being developed for lifting activities. Vessel stability is the most important aspect for this type of work, with the hull shape needed for optimal sailing taking second place. Still, various measures are being taken to promote energy efficiency. These include a rounded bow, inclined stem, and special propulsion system. These measures will improve both the vessel’s manoeuvrability and its propulsion efficiency.

The first milestone in this shipbuilding project was reached on 24 May 2017, when the first piece of steel was cut. On 19 June 2017, Cor Paans, Manager at Paans Van Oord, conducted the keellaying ceremony. To wish the ship a prosperous voyage, a Dutch guilder from 1916 was placed under the first section. The coin from 1916 is a nod to the year the crane vessel Viking – which the Werkendam will replace – was built. The delivery of the vessel and its christening are scheduled for April 2018.

Een teaser van de Lustrumstunt Wat gaat het (niet) worden?

Een groot aantal leden van Simon Stevin maakt zich op voor het lustrumgala: blauwe brieven worden geschreven, danslessen worden gevolgd en stijlvolle galajurken worden gepast. Voor velen zal dit evenement hét einde van een oneindelick lustrumjaar markeren.

Johan Somers Er is echter nóg een commissie bezig aan het lustrum. Deze commissie werkt in alle geheimzinnigheid in de donkere kelders van Gemini-Noord aan een ander pronkstuk van het lustrum.

Het is een traditie die vele lustra terug gaat, en is daarmee niet weer weg te denken uit het lustrumprogramma. Deze traditie en symbool van een werktuigkundig-verantwoord lustrum wordt ook wel de Lustrumstunt genoemd.

De oorsprong Het is een gewoonte dat de invulling van de Lustrumstunt zo lang mogelijk geheim blijft, dat is dit lustrum natuurlijk niet anders. Vraag een gemiddelde werktuigbouwer in de gangen van Gemini naar de Lustrumstunt en deze zal misschien niet eens weten dat er een geweldige stunt aan zit te komen. Maar, ook binnen de actievere kringen van Simon borrelt nieuwsgierigheid.

Regelmatig worden leden van de LuStCommissie, zoals de

Lustrumstuntcommissie zichzelf doorgaans noemt (lees: WhatsApp), in de Simonkamer subtiel aan hun overall getrokken.

Meestal begint deze geraffineerde drang naar meer informatie over de Lustrumstunt met de vraag: ‘Hoe gaat het eigenlijk met de Lustrumstunt?’. Hierna wordt er misschien veel gepraat, maar er zal nooit daadwerkelijk iets worden gezegd. Hetzelfde geldt voor de soortgelijke pogingen in een bruine kroeg waarvan de eigenaar ook in de tijd van de Vikingen geleefd zou kunnen hebben. Maar, de commissie geeft de gevoelige informatie met betrekking tot de stunt niet (gemakkelijk) prijs.

Het is echter een gegeven dat de LuStCommissie ongeveer één jaar geleden werd gevormd met de opdracht een onvergetelijke stunt neer te zetten. Dat was dan ook de volledige taakomschrijving van de commissie. In de afgelopen lustra zijn verschillende werktuigkundig verantwoorde voertuigen gecreëerd: ’s werelds

langste fiets, een schommelfiets en een 32-persoons skelter.

Daarentegen hoeft de stunt geen voertuig te zijn, zoals bewezen is tijdens het Thiende Lustrum. Hier werd een prachtige lustrumklok aangeboden welke momenteel te zien is bij de ingang van Gemini.

De commissie stond dus voor een erg lastige taak: het kiezen van een unieke stunt uit oneindelick veel mogelijkheden. De meest gekke ideeën zijn de vergadertafel overgevlogen. Natuurlijk zal het uiteindelijke idee hier nog niet gepresenteerd worden. Maar, om de honger naar meer informatie enigszins te stillen volgen hier twee concepten die het niet gehaald hebben.

Mario Kart XXL Iedereen kent Mario Kart: het befaamde en beruchte videospel, waarbij populaire Mariokarakters tegen elkaar racen in de meest fantasievolle voertuigen. Het heerlijk doorzichtige spelverloop maakt dat iedereen van jong tot oud en van nuchter tot flink bezopen het kan spelen. Sta je achter? Dan kom je door middel van een krachtige kogel binnen no time weer aan kop. Sta je vooraan?

Dan doe je jezelf er goed aan voor te bereiden op verschillende ‘shells’ die je kunnen naderen.

Om het communitygevoel van de gehele campus te vergroten én Simon een permanent prominente plaats te geven, zou de wegzakbarbecue op het Fluxveld beschikbaar zijn voor iedere groep studenten die er gebruik van wenst te maken. Een groot gat zou worden uitgegraven om te barbecue weg te kunnen laten zakken.

Door middel van een grote zwengel kon een complex mechanisme aangedreven worden, waarmee een schitterend Simonzegel omgedraaid werd en de barbecue tevoorschijn zou komen. De barbecue zou voorzien worden van alle features die nodig zijn om een goede barbecueborrel te organiseren: een tap, een grote grill, een uitgestrekt werkblad en speakers om met ‘Ingenieur voor het leven’ op de achtergrond burgers te kunnen flippen Het zou een uitdagend project worden om het geheel te kunnen passen op het Fluxveld. Een grote uitdaging hierbij zou zijn om alles “dronken student proof” te maken. Mede door het complexe leidingwerk dat onder het veld loopt, is dit weergaloze concept afgevallen.

Wat dan wel?

De grootsheid van bovengenoemde ideeën ten spijt zijn deze niet gekozen voor de Lustrumstunt van dit lustrum. U als lezer zal waarschijnlijk uzelf de vraag stellen: “Allemaal leuk en aardig wat het niet is geworden, maar wat dan wel?”. Uiteindelijk blijft het concept zó geheim dat zelf de onthullingsdatum nog niet vrijgegeven wordt. Wel kan gezegd worden dat de lasercutmachine van Willy aan de lopende band wordt gebruikt om prototypes te fabriceren. Het eindresultaat dient immers perfect te zijn. En ja, ook het lasapparaat komt en zal nog veel meer van pas komen.

De lustrumstunt wordt groots, uniek en vooral schitterend. Helaas is de tijd nog niet rijp om te onthullen wat het dit jaar gaat worden.

Toch geven we alle lezers deze hint mee: Nu is het niet W-verantwoord om de hele vereniging uit te nodigen om samen achter een beeldscherm te gaan “Mario Karten”.

Vandaar dat het idee ontstond om karts te beunen en deze uit te rusten met een volledig geïntegreerd Mario Kart systeem. Door middel van zenders zouden shells in het midden van de strijd afgevuurd kunnen worden, waarna de kart van de tegenstander een aantal seconden stil zou vallen, mits er raak werd geschoten.

Bananen zouden tactisch over de baan neergelegd kunnen worden om het de mede-fietsenmaker, vermomd als Luigi, moeilijk te maken. Driften zou natuurlijk worden beloond met extra powerups. Deze potentiële lustrumstunt zou naast ronkende motoren ook een aardige hoeveelheid elektronica met zich meebrengen.

Het is jammer dat de exacte reden niet is genotuleerd, maar zoals gezegd is dit MEGAtronische idee afgevallen.

Wegzakbarbecue Tijdens verschillende vergaderingen zijn ook diverse permanente Lustumstuntideeën geopperd. Deze kunnen net zoals de lustrumklok een blijvende herinnering van een prachtig lustrum zijn. Eén van die permanente ideeën was een grootse wegzakbarbecue. Focus je daarbij vooral op de derde lettergreep van dat woord.

Hephtig!

Een vurig shotje

Zes jaar geleden op 3 oktober 2011 werd het E.W.D. Hephaestus opgericht door vijf Eindhovense Werktuigbouwers. Geïnspireerd door de god van de smeedkunsten en het vuur werd de dispuutsdrank bedacht: het vurig shotje. Bestaand uit een borrel Schrobbelèr met vijf druppels Tabasco, ter herinnering aan de oprichters.

Jasper Rosito Het eerste ingrediënt, Schrobbelèr, is een uit Tilburg afkomstige kruidenbitter. In 1973 werd Schrobbelèr bedacht, waarna het in 1978 voor het eerste bij het grote publiek werd geïntroduceerd.

De uitvinder, een Brabander in hart en ziel, vond carnaval hier hét juiste moment voor. Deze historie leert ons dat de Brabantse likeur dit jaar haar vierenveertigjarig (4x11) bestaan viert.

De maker van dit drankje, Jan Wassing, was een maagpatiënt, waardoor hij slecht tegen sterke drank kon. Om toch te kunnen genieten van een borrel ging hij experimenteren met het mengen van allerlei dranken, opzoek naar iets wat zijn maag wel kon verdragen. Zijn gevonden likeur had een relatief laag alcoholpercentage (21,5%) en verkocht hij in zijn huisbar, Bij den Schrobbelaar, waar het een groot succes bleek te zijn. Op verzoek van Wassing deed Isidorus Jonkers, een Tilburgse likeurstoker, een analyse van de kruidenreceptuur waarna ze het samen in productie namen. De likeur wordt tegenwoordig gemaakt met 43 verschillende kruiden, de precieze samenstelling van de kruidenmix

is een goed bewaard familiegeheim. De overige ingrediënten zijn suiker en alcohol, beide afkomstig van de suikerbiet.

Textielindustrie Jan Wassing ontleende de naam van zijn likeur en huisbar aan de textielindustrie. De Schrobbelaar is de persoon die de wol uit de war haalde zodat het gesponnen kan worden. Een minder opvallende (en smakelijke) link met de textielindustrie is het verpakkingsmateriaal. Er is gekozen voor een kruik in plaats van

een fles vanwege de manier waarop de wol gezuiverd werd. Dit werd gedaan met urine die door de textielmedewerkers thuis werd verzameld in kruiken.

Tabasco Naast Schrobbelèr zitten er ook vijf druppels Tabasco in een vurig shotje. Tasbasco is vernoemd naar het gelijknamige Mexicaanse gebied, echter is de saus afkomstig uit de Verenigde Staten. De eerste en bekendste Tabasco werd gemaakt door McIlhenny Co. Halverwege de negentiende eeuw werd de pittige saus verkocht in Eau-de-Cologne flesjes die later zijn geëvolueerd tot de flesjes die men tegenwoordig overal herkent. In tegenstelling tot Schrobbelèr heeft Tabasco niet zo veel ingrediënten, slechts drie om precies te zijn: pepers, zout en azijn. Van oorsprong komen de pepers en zout van Avery Island, echter is de afname tegenwoordig te groot en worden de daar verbouwde pepers alleen gebruikt voor zaadproductie.

In de afgelopen honderd jaar is het recept van de Tabasco praktisch niet veranderd. Daarentegen is het proces door automatisering wel wat veranderd. Het maken van Tabasco begint bij het plukken van de pepers. Om zeker te zijn van een consistent product wordt alleen gebruik gemaakt van pepers met dezelfde rijping. Aan de kleur kunnen de plukkers zien of de pepers rijp zijn, hiervoor gebruiken ze een le petit bâton rouge (klein rood stokje). Na het plukken worden de pepers vermalen en met zout gemengd.

Deze mix laten ze vervolgens drie jaar fermenteren in vaten die voorheen gebruikt werden om Jack Daniel’s whisky te laten rijpen.

Als laatste stap wordt er azijn toegevoegd aan de ontstane pulp.

De pittige smaak van Tabasco komt door het hoge gehalte capsaïcine in de pepers, deze stof staat voor de pittigheid die uitgedrukt wordt op schaal van Scoville. Met een Scovillewaarde van 5.000 op een schaal van 0 tot 16.000.000 lijkt het mee te vallen hoe scherp de saus smaakt, maar uit tests is gebleken dat een gemiddelde Nederlander een maaltijd als pittig ervaart bij een waarde tussen de 500 en 1.000. Hierdoor mag Tabasco zich met recht een ‘hot sauce’ noemen.

Samengevat vertegenwoordigt het vurig shotje met deze twee ingrediënten onze Brabantse herkomst en het vuur.

Although there is absolutely no wind in the eye of a hurricane, it can bring destruction everywhere around it. At the moment of this photo, hurricane Irma was approaching Cuba and Florida. In the USA alone, where it hit at Texas and Florida, the amount of deaths already raised above the 200 incidents. When the intensity of the hurricane started to decrease, the mess it let behind started to appear. Although America was one of many countries hit, the president Donald Trump behaved like it was the only one. Especially Puerto Rico had to wait a long time before they got help from the USA. Now they finally have it, lets hope they can restore as fast as possible.

De Brascursie

Op bezoek bij het echte corps

108 best wel kleine oogjes stonden te knipperen want er waren een aantal wekkers heel vroeg afgegaan. Van al deze oogjes behoorden er maar 14 toe aan studenten op de hoogte van het dagprogramma, dit artikel gaat natuurlijk over de brascursie!

Daan van Boekel Het is goed mogelijk dat je niet bekend bent met het fenomeen “brascursie,” de reden hiervoor is dat dit een van de weinige activiteiten is die niet voor alle studenten geopend is. Wanneer de bestuursleden van Simon Stevin het stokje hebben doorgegeven, organiseren ze het jaar erna nog één laatste activiteit als bedankje voor de inzet van actieve leden uit hun jaar: de brascursie!

Van tevoren is nooit bekend wat het programma gaat inhouden, al is de algehele opzet inmiddels al jaren vertrouwd. ’s Ochtends vroeg op excursie bij een bedrijf, in de middag is er een activiteit en ter afsluiting een gezamenlijk diner met daaraan verbonden een onvergetelijke stapavond.

Dit jaar was de opzet niet veel anders, vandaar ook de kleine oogjes. Om 07:00 reedt er een bus de TU/e campus op en onze studenten waren duidelijk nog niet goed wakker. Hoewel er op

de bus Rijksoverheid stond en de chauffeur een baret en uniform met zich mee had, viel het kwartje dat we naar Defensie gingen nog niet. Na een busreis, die voor sommigen de nodige uurtjes slaap inhield, kwamen we in Leusden aan. Hier zit de technische afdeling van het Materieellogistiek Commando Land in Leusden.

Deze afdeling is in het kort verantwoordelijk voor het onderhoud van de bestaande systemen van de landmacht en houdt zich daarnaast bezig met het ontwikkelen van nieuwe systemen.

Voor ons betekende dit dat zodra we het terrein opreden we overal grote defensievoertuigen zagen staan zoals tanks, de bushmaster en bovenal de “Leopard 1-Beach Armoured Recovery Vehicle,” oftewel BARV. Na ontvangst kregen we een presentatie over wat de technische projecten zijn waarmee ze zich in Leusden bezig houden. Defensie koopt eigenlijk vrijwel alles aan, dit

betekent dat ze met producenten afspraken moeten maken over wat een voertuig moet kunnen. Deze randvoorwaarden moeten echter ook geverifieerd worden. Ze lieten ons bijvoorbeeld een videofragment uit Amerika zien waarin een militair voertuig min of meer uit elkaar vloog na een remtest; de gehele achteras brak af!

Defensie maakt vooraf een inschatting over het gebruik van een voertuig, waar zal het ingezet worden, voor hoe lang, enzovoorts.

Je kunt je voorstellen dat dit best lastig is, je weet niet waar de inzet van Defensie over 10 jaar nodig zal zijn. Nadat het voertuig is geleverd gaan we de eerder genoemde afspraken ook beproeven, alleen in veel kortere tijd dan een levensduur van bijvoorbeeld 15 jaar. Dit betekent het afleggen van speciale, verslechterende parcours en het daarna ook extrapoleren van de uitkomsten. Daarna volgt het rapport; de aankoop is goedgekeurd of niet.

Na de inleidende presentaties werden we verdeeld in twee groepen voor de case en de rondleiding. Tijdens de rondleiding kwamen we langs alle grote en gave voertuigen die Defensie rijk is, waaronder dus ook de laatste tanks. Sommigen hiervan waren deels uit elkaar gehaald, het was dus mogelijk om te zien wat er onder de motorkap zat! Tijdens de cases werd er ingegaan op relevante problemen die Defensie op het moment bezig houden.

De centrale vraag hierbij was: “We hebben dit afgesproken met de producent, hoe kunnen we dit goed verifiëren?” Met andere woorden: Verzin een testplan om te kijken of je aankoop aan de specificaties voldoet.

Gewapend met een stevige lunch was het tijd voor het middagprogramma, een sportieve activiteit. Hoewel er tweemaal gemaild was dat sportspullen een vereiste waren, had toch niet iedereen verwacht dat deze echt nodig waren, hetgeen ze zouden gaan bezuren. Op de sportlocatie van Defensie stonden twee heren van het corps ons op te wachten, het corps mariniers.

We moesten binnen vijf minuten gaan omkleden, laat komen werd je hierbij niet in dank afgenomen. In vier groepen, ieder een boomstam dragend, begaven we ons in looppas richting een hindernisbaan. In dezelfde groepen gingen we tijgeren, de “bear walk” doen en op andere manieren onze spieren aan de kaak stellen. Het hoogtepunt was toch wel het door de modder onder je groepsgenoten door kruipen. Ik raad je zeker aan het beeldmateriaal op onze facebookpagina op te zoeken!

Na deze inspanningen was het tijd voor een beloning, Defensie werd gedag gezegd en de bus bracht ons naar de kade. Hier stond er namelijk een heuse privé partyboot op ons te wachten met een dakterras waar Swifty jaloers op zou worden! Dit dakterras, het zonnetje, geleverde inspanningen en gratis bier; de ingrediënten voor 55 aangeschoten en vooral ook hongerige W’ers. Gelukkig kon er aan boord aan gegeten worden, traditiegetrouw kon er niks anders op het menu staan dan spareribs.

Tijdens het eten kreeg het 61e Bestuur de mogelijkheid om zich een laatste keer voor te stellen aan het hele gezelschap. Er werden kritische vragen gesteld die resulteerden in een aantal toezeggingen. Deze varieerden van het laten zien dat je als Voorzitter de Vereniging kunt dragen, tot het zorgen dat je als Commissaris Externe Betrekkingen altijd voorzien bent van een potje Murray’s Pommade tijdens het stappen.

Aan het eind van dit diner legde de boot aan Utrechtse kade aan, van alwaar een bus onze trip naar het centrum verzorgde. Een kroegentocht stond op het programma dus iedereen werd voorzien van een plattegrond en eindtijd. Niet iedereen koos echter de laatste bus mee te pakken, sommigen besloten zelfs de nacht door te halen. Voor mij een teken dat het een geslaagde dag was!

The independence of Catalonia

A background story

Independence, an almost holy word and an ever returning subject in regions of almost every country. Friesland in the Netherlands, Tibet in China, and the Flemish in Belgium are some examples. But in recent western history, seldom a region has gone as far as Catalonia in Spain. Living in Spain for an internship made the discussion very real, so I decided to write a piece with a more elaborate view on the subject at hand.

Niki Wilms The first and most important subject that needs to be addressed, is that the independence of Catalonia divides the Spanish people to the core and no Spaniard is frankly commenting on the subject. Their Spanish unity, their proud, is broken.

The origin of the dispute between Catalonia and Spain is very old. The nowadays Catalonia exists since the region of Aragon and Catalonia merged in 1150. This alliance lasted until King Philip the fifth conquered Spain in 1715 and created the modern Spain as we know it nowadays. The king of Spain tried to force the Spanish language upon the Catalan people, but after numerous attempts they stopped trying and accepted their defeat in 1931. They then constituted a semi-independent regional government in Catalonia, also called the Generalitat.

However, in 1938 General Francisco Franco set out to destroy the Catalan separatism and killed 3500 people in the process and exiled even many more. When democracy returned in 1977, a degree of autonomy once returned to the Catalan region. Since then, the urge for an independent Catalonia grew steadily. In 2006 there was a small victory for the Catalan people when the ‘Statute of Autonomy of Catalonia� was signed by the Spanish government. However, the Spanish Constitutional Court revoked the statute, by declaring there

was no legal basis. This felt like a hit in the face of the Catalan people, because this statute allowed them to call themselves a country within Spain.

During the economic crisis the difference in wealth, between the Catalans and the rest of Spain, became clearer and more and more Catalans where asking themselves why they needed to pay for the poorer rest of Spain. This resulted in a massive demonstration of 1.5 million people in Barcelona in 2012 in favor of independence.

The rally for independence got serious after the regional head of that time was reelected and signed a governing pact with the left-wing ERC. Both their parties supported a referendum for independence in 2014. They also signed a ‘declaration of sovereignty’ and as a result the referendum could take place. This referendum was forbidden by the constitutional court.

However, the regional president at that time, Arthur Mas, signed a decree for a non-binding referendum, so the constitutional court of Spain needed to reevaluate the referendum in the new legal framework. Before the court could rule again, the referendum took place and not only 37% percent of the Catalan people voted, but an astonishing of 80% percent voted in favor of independence. The official statement of the Spanish government stated it was not a democratic vote, but an act of political propaganda and an useless farce. However, the regional president saw this as a sign to call for new regional elections that were won by the separatist parties.

The separatist parties immediately adopted a resolution which supported independence in 1.5 years. They choose Carles Puigdemont as the new Catalan president. The former president, Artur Mas, was in the meantime barred from office for two years

by Spanish court, because of allowing the staging of the 2014 referendum. On the 6th of September 2017 a law passed in the Catalan Parliament that provided the legal framework for a binding referendum on the first of October.

The constitutional court again ruled the public vote as unconstitutional and the Spanish premier Ranoy was determined to prevent the referendum. After the debacle of two years earlier, he tried to prevent this by raids in Catalan government offices and arrested 12 high ranking officials in an anti-referendum operation. He also took control of the normally independent Catalan Police. This actions tensioned the relation between the Catalans and Spaniards.

The tension erupted during the referendum. The Spanish government send the police to Catalonia to prevent the referendum from taking place. What happened there went viral and the entire

Who is Carles Puigdemont?

Carles Puigdemont is at the moment of writing still president of Catalonia.

The reason that Puigdemont is the number one enemy of Spain is because of his background. He started his career in Catalan philogy, but after a serious car accident in 1983 (the scar he covers up with his Beatles hair look) he turned to journalism. He was editor-in-chief for a few pro-independence newspapers and in 2006 he turned to politics, where after he became mayor of the city Girona. He became president of Catalonia out of nowhere. Since his youth he made clear that his dream is the independence of Catalonia. He also is the first Catalan President that refused to take the oath of loyalty to the Spanish constitution and current monarch. This in combination with his lack of politic ambition makes him an opponent the Spanish Government fears.

country of Spain was ashamed of the violence the police used against the people. However there are also stories about injured policeman, so an unbiased view is very difficult obtain. In the end the referendum day was a moral win for the Catalan-Independence community.

Almost 90 percent of the people voted in favor for independence, however only 42 % percent of the population went to vote. This is even more than expected, but probably due to the extreme effort of the government to stop the referendum more people went to vote. They not went to vote for independence, but they wanted to have the right to vote on this subject.

The rest of Spain was unanimous agreeing about the illegality of the referendum, however the way it was handled divides them.

A part is agreeing with the government and they will clap for the police during manifestations all in Spain, because they stopped some voting offices. The other half is disgusted of the violenc against the people and are angry at the government for using this blunt method.

A lot of people agree that it would probably have been a better option to let them have the referendum and afterwards declare it ridiculous, because the attendance would be probably below 30%. However, when the history is taken in account, it had to escalate sometime as now should be clear.

Because of the nature of the Simon Ster (published one month after writing), speculating about the future is without avail. This dispute will develop volatile and the rest can be followed on the news.

Contest Like the editions before, every Simon Ster has a contest where you make chance to win a nice prize for the one who solves the contest. The prize we are going to give away this time is a beautiful drill with two batteries, fast charger, 69 drill bits and more. It is a model DS14DJL from Hitachi and comes in a nice case, which makes it even more easy to work on your own projects or help out others with their `Beunprojecten`! Good luck!

Contest 49.1 In order to repair all Land Yachts and have all sorts of “Beunplezier”, the Commissioner of Land Yachting needs to have proper equipment. However, some students tend to handle all the beautiful equipment not rather how they should. This resulted in some equipment being damaged and this also involved a ruler.

The ruler was originally 61 centimeters long, but it broke and was left being 33 centimeters long. Because it was used so much , the numbers indicating the length mostly faded away and now only 8 of the originally 33 numbers are left. Although only 8 numbers remain, the Commissioner of Land Yachting can still measure every length from 1 to 33 centimeters correctly. The question is, which numbers are still left on the ruler?
