What's happening at IMPACT? Women in Long Branch Build Relationships and Develop Greater Economic Capacity The Long Branch Entrepreneurial Sewing Circle Brings Women Together for Positive Change What began as a women's support group of eight women in the Long Branch neighborhood of Silver Spring has evolved into a formal three month entrepreneurial sewing circle. The members provide mutual support for one another and receive sewing training and technical assistance as they develop their own home businesses. As their relationships with one another deepen, they are able to explore opportunities to leverage their emerging skills in order to generate income and build wider personal and professional networks in the community. So far, they successfully conducted one paid three hour evening course for Silver Spring residents and opened a regular booth at the Fenton Street Market where they continue to market their goods and services as a collective

IMPACT Engages the Community on the Soccer Field! The Long Branch Athletic Association is Now a Program of IMPACT Silver Spring In its second full season operating the programs of the Long Branch Athletic Association, IMPACT fielded five soccer teams of student athletes from Broad Acres Elementary School to participate in the Takoma Park Soccer League, engaging dozens of families through one of the most natural community building activities: team sports! Parents in Long Branch, a neighborhood traditionally underrepresented in Silver Spring youth athletics, are fully invested in their children's teams and are connecting with the community in new ways! During the fall season, IMPACT will be integrating the youth sports programs into its economic empowerment work, engaging entire families to participate more fully in the economic and civic life of the Silver Spring community.

IMPACT in the Schools Action Team Works with Partners to Transform Piney Branch Elementary School At Piney Branch Elementary School in Takoma Park, IMPACT is partnering with a team of diverse administrators, teachers and parents on a school transformation project called the Piney Branch Action Team (PBAT). The goal of the Team is to develop and carry-out projects that promote a school culture that works equally well for every family. The team’s most recent project focused on welcoming the families of newly incoming 2nd graders who will be attending the school in the fall. Using the door-knocking model of the Neighborhood Opportunity Network, members of the Action Team visited many of the families at their homes for information-sharing and to invite them to a special joint PTA/PBAT event. The event (which was held on June 2nd) provided space for relationship-building among families and with school staff. Guided tours of the school were given to small groups of two or three

families at a time. A pizza dinner was served with time built-in for mingling. Assistant principal Kara Tymon led the more than 150 parents and kids in a game of Up-Down. The game, besides being a lot of fun, helped families get to know more about each other and celebrate commonalities and differences. At the end of the night, everyone shared in eating slices from cakes with “Congratulations” written in bright red frosting. Parents and kids who will be new to Piney Branch in the fall will go into summer vacation having already made meaningful connections to each other, teachers, administrators, and even to the school building. That's a school culture that everyone can appreciate. Congratulations indeed!

Call to Action Why Do YOU Give to IMPACT? Cindy Allen eighbor, Editor, Educator, and IMPACT Contributor I think I'd need to be a poet to convey why I'm so dedicated to IMPACT Silver Spring! It's been such an important part of my life for more than 10 years. Even when I haven't been able to spend the kind of time I'd like to working with IMPACT, I've stayed connected to the people thanks to Lasting IMPACT and the truly inspiring fundraising and community-building events the IMPACT staff and volunteers create. Being part of the leadership-training pilot program in 1999 was a huge gift. Until then, I'd been serving in all sorts of community volunteer jobs, but I'd never stopped to figure out what kind of leader I was or how I could be much more effective. I love the way IMPACT gets us to excavate our assumptions about each other, examine them carefully in the bright light, and then transform them into something hopeful that we can use to make a difference, one person at a time. Feeling inspired to support IMPACT's work of building a thriving, multicultural Silver Spring? Feeling inspired to support IMPACT's work of building a thriving, multicultural Silver Spring?
