Svalbard, Arctic, 2017, by Steve McCurry Cover picture: Walrus, Arctic, 2017, by Steve McCurry

“Together with our local experts we’ll discover the true soul of the Arctic, a place of breathtaking scenery, unusual wildlife and stark contrasts. Each time I visit I feel like I’m on a different planet!”

CONRAD COMBRINK, SVP EXPEDITIONS, TURNAROUND OPERATIONS AND DESTINATION MANAGEMENT, SILVERSEA CRUISES

“The Arctic is simply amazing, from the ground up. Some of the rocks underfoot are among the oldest on the planet, while others were originally part of a coral reef that was actually located at the Equator ages ago. It’s a place of beauty like no other...”

WELCOME TO YOUR ARCTIC

As you float alongside blue-green glaciers in glass-like waters, the only sounds you hear are the crackling of millennial ice and your own heartbeat, as the awesome silence of the Arctic speaks right to your soul. Welcome to one of the most remote places on Earth: a dramatic region of breathtaking scenery, frozen oceans and rugged features. Encompassing the entire northernmost area of the planet, it stretches across a wide range of geographies, nations and cultures: from Greenland, the world’s largest island, to the Russian Arctic; from the Canadian Arctic and Nunavut to Norway’s Svalbard archipelago. And, of course, at the very top, the North Pole. The stuff of dreams, ambitions and bucket lists, the region is sparsely populated

with a unique mix of peoples who have learned to adapt to the Arctic’s extreme cold and harsh conditions over millennia. The name Arctic comes from the ancient Greek Arktos, meaning “bear”, a reference to the Great Bear constellation, and a word adopted to indicate a northerly direction. This moniker is doubly appropriate as we can also think of the great white Polar Bears wandering the region’s shores, one of a handful of species populating the Arctic year-round. Join us and a long line of intrepid explorers - from the first Vikings to sail north of the Arctic Circle in the 10th century, to American explorer Robert Peary’s contested first visit to the geographic North Pole - and see what it’s like to really be on top of the world.

260 SPECIES OF TERRESTRIAL FAUNA OVER

The Arctic has a seasonal population of roughly 200 species of birds, about 2% of all global avian species. Each summer, thousands of seabirds flock here to breed in the area’s numerous colonies. Of the 61 terrestrial mammal species here, only the most resilient hang around to survive the brutally cold and dark winter months, including the Arctic Fox, Svalbard Reindeer and Polar Bear.

12 SPECIES OF MARINE FAUNA

There are 12 species of marine mammals regularly inhabiting the Arctic: the polar bear, walrus, four species of whale (Bowhead, Grey, Narwhal and Beluga) and six species of ice seal (Bearded, Ribbon, Ringed, Spotted, Harp and Hooded). Several additional species are also seen occasionally, including the Harbour Porpoise, as well as Sperm, Blue, Fin, Humpback and Killer Whales.

1,700 SPECIES OF PLANT

Many plant species have developed surprising strategies to survive in this harsh environment, including asexual reproduction. Tundra vegetation grows low and mainly features sedges, grasses, dwarf shrubs, wildflowers, mosses and lichens.

WILDER THAN WILD

From white Polar Bears to dark brown Arctic Wolves, the diversity of wildlife in this region is extraordinary. Hundreds of species of terrestrial and marine fauna roam the varied Arctic landscapes and seascapes, and you’ll be right in the middle of it, whether hiking across green tundra or gently floating on icy clear waters in a Zodiac. You might just spot a Beluga whale off the bays and inlets of Canada and Greenland, or spot herds of reindeer grazing on the shore. But the real surprise is the sheer number of bird species you’ll find here. With over 200 different types of birds present in the Arctic alone, you’ll be in awe at how many flock together in immense colonies stretching across the cliffs and hillsides of this incredible region. One of the these is the Arctic Tern, a feisty avian that, at

first glance, seems entirely unassuming with its diminutive black and white frame and regular-sized orange beak. But don’t be fooled, as the Arctic Tern actually migrates further than any other bird, and, indeed, any other animal, on Earth. Every year it flies from the Arctic to the Antarctic for breeding and feeding, and then flies all the way back. A truly extraordinary traveller that mimics our own passion and desire for exploration.

16
You’ll be amazed at the unique wildlife of the Arctic

POLAR BEAR

The polar bear is Nature’s white knight, courageously roaming the Arctic tundra and glaciers, often solo, dipping into the icy seas for food. Unlike other bears, they’re classified as marine mammals, as they depend on the sea for life and prefer spending winters hunting seals and swimming between ice floes to hibernation. Their thick white coat provides both warmth and camouflage, so spotting them on your travels takes practice and concentration. A small hint: it’s much easier to do in summer, as the land and tundra are bare of snow.

SVALBARD REINDEER

Never tamed or herded by the any of the peoples of the Arctic, these reindeer are truly wild. Thanks to the coarse, hollow hairs on their pelts and shorter legs than their continental relatives - reindeer in Europe, caribou in North America - heat loss is minimised as much as possible. In summer, they fatten up by feeding on the vegetation found in valleys across the Arctic, while in winter they graze atop windswept ridges, where snow is most shallow.

WALRUS

Weighing up to two tonnes - as much as a small SUV - the walrus is most mobile while at sea, diving down to the seabed to feed on swimming crustaceans or suck clam flesh from their shells. They use their immense tusks to haul their massive bodies on to shore or on to ice floes and male walruses, also known as bulls, use their tusks for seasonal battle, competing for dominance within their respective groups. The winner gets to swim around a group of females, calling out with unique grunts and yells that come from the large air sack under their throats.

ARCTIC FOX

The Arctic Fox has adapted to the harshness and hardships of this unique region, by tunnelling into snow to curl up for heat during blizzards, and evolving to feature fur that changes colour from season to season. White fur in the winter and brown fur in the summer provide both warmth and camouflage year-round, and allow the Arctic Fox to withstand frigid temperatures of -50°C. Often seen trotting about near regular foraging routes and other food sources, like bird colonies and shorelines, they sometimes trail polar bears on sea ice to scavenge the remains of seal kills.

EXPEDITION Grand

Silver Wind

Sail across the world “the other way” on this expedition featuring polar opposites in geography, climate and cultures. You’ll get to know some of the most remote communities and wildlife in the world, as you begin with an extensive exploration of Antarctica and South Georgia, and then sail up the East coast of South America. You’ll visit the Arquipélago dos Bijagós and Barra Grande, Brazil, both new destinations for Silversea. You’ll also sail under London’s iconic Tower Bridge, visit remote parts of the British Isles accessible only by Zodiac, and, to top it all off, enjoy an in-depth exploration of Iceland and Svalbard.

You’ll be catered to and pampered each and every day, as our staff learns to anticipate your needs.
