SILICON BEACH FEST 2016 celebrated it's Fifth Anniversary bringing the LA Tech community together for a powerhouse event. SBFest 2016 was held August 24-27 at the Marina del Rey Hotel.

ALL THE HIGHLIGHTS FROM LEADING ENTERTAINMENT BRANDS & STARTUPS

KEYNOTE SPEAKER: Etyan Elbaz shares wisdom on tough decisions AND THE STARTUP COMPETITION WINNER IS: Kitterly SHARK TANK ALUMNI: What it’s like to swim in open water VIRTUAL REALITY: All the scoop on the latest trend in technology DATING APP TIPS: How to build a presence that will attract others

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS Henry Lowenfels— The Vice President of Business Development at Scopely, a mobile game company. He was filling in at the event for CEO Walter Driver. He weighed in on the hugely popular Pokemon Go, calling it “genre-defining,” while also saying that if it wasn’t based around Pokemon it wouldn't have succeeded to nearly the same extent. He also teased that Scopely is developing WWE, Wheel of Fortune, and match three titles.

Etyan Elbaz— The co-founder of Applied Semantics and Social Native, chairman at Render Media, and Board Member at Scopely. He shared his wisdom on rejection (you’ll receive different kinds of “nos” from different people), good press (it doesn’t generate revenue or help in the longer-term), and struggle (it precedes growth). He also shared the story of how he’s had to not only fire friends, but an unruly CEO, and how his goal by age 50 is to remain calm in stressful situations.

Shawn Gold— The CMO at TechStyle. He talked in detail about how his company uses a quiz to determine customer needs and preferences when users initially encounter the site. TechStyle see themselves as a membership-based e-commerce site— much like Amazon Prime and Dollar Shave Club— although they differentiate by allowing customers to either subscribe or not subscribe during any given month. Notably, they control their supply chain and are profitable.

Summer Wedding Hit The Floor Episode: 'Til Death Do Us Part Special will be the wedding you've been waiting for but will it be happily ever after? Fans of VH1’s sexy soap Hit the Floor were left spinning after the Season 3 finale, which stars Local Westsider, Taylour Paige, who plays Ahsha, accepted a center-court proposal from Derek (McKinley Freeman). Rather than make viewers wait for next season to see what happens next, VH1 will be airing a special episode Monday, September 5th at 9/8c on VH1. The hour will answer #WhoShotJelena: suspects include but are not limited to Oscar (Don Stark), who just lost his office to Jelena; Terrence (Robert Christopher Riley), who didn’t handle losing Jelena as both a romantic and business partner all that well; and Sloane (Kimberly Elise), who would probably do anything to keep Jelena from making Ahsha’s life a living hell.

Heal - Neal Aubin, Kitterly - Mari Bower, Vampr - Josh Simons, Heartbeat -Kate Aveline Edwards, Markett - Franky Bernstein

By Daniel Steingold Kitterly wins the grand prize including $5K cash via Media Temple, Surf Air flight, 2 Air New Zealand flights on LAX (London route), 10 hours transactional legal services from Sheppard Mullin, and 3 months open coworking space at CTRL Collective's Playa Vista or new Downtown Location.

Second place went to Markett, an on demand marketing startup currently at Amplify accelerator in Venice. Other startups in the Final Six included Heal (doctor on demand), Heartbeat (women millennial marketing), Vampr (music networking), and Canny (cannabis directory).

THE STARTUP SHOWCASE COMPETITION Breakdown

20 startups from all over Silicon Beach competed to be crowned winner of the SB Fest. A panel of six judges looked at a variety of factors to anoint a winner, including their pitch, business model, and how well companies demonstrated their value proposition. The grand prize package included $5,000, an all-expense-paid roundtrip to London, a membership to CTRL Collective, and 10 hours of complementary legal advice.

Who Was There?

There were all types of companies competing at the event, but only six made it to the finals. Those companies were Heartbeat (a social media ambassador platform); Heal (an innovative healthcare on-demand service); Weedmaps (a platform that connects marijuana users with the right strains and dispensaries); Kitterly (a craft supply marketplace); Markett (a platform that allows anyone to make money marketing brands); and Vampr (a music-based social network).

So Who Won?

Kitterly won the competition, a result that became evident the further the final showcase went on. Many of the judges openly expressed praise for CEO and cofounder Mari Bower, who impressed with many tidbits about her company, including the fact that her social media posts spread virally and Kitterly’s product return rate is practically nil.

Other Highlights

• Markett founder and CEO Franky Bernstein was outright told by a judge that he wouldn’t win during his final presentation. Ouch. • Vampr cofounder Josh Simons struck a licensing deal with a panel judge during his final presentation. It was a scene that was eerily reminiscent of something that shark Kevin O’Leary would propose on Shark Tank. • One judge said that he liked what Weedmaps offered as a company, which prompted laughter from the crowd. SB Magazine and Startups— Silicon Beach Magazine spoke with a few of the companies competing for the grand prize, including Foodies.ai and ELM.

VIRTUAL REALITY

By Daniel Steingold

What Do You Mean?

What’s Hot?

Virtual Reality, or VR, is a relatively new computer-based technology that provides a simulated world through sensory input— sight, sound, etc. The experience usually involves using a headset and headphones, which help allow for user interaction within either a replicated environment or an imaginary setting. VR usually allows for the exploration of an environment rendered in complete 3D.

I spent most of my time at the VR Lounge with Specular Theory, an LA-based media company that exclusively produces VR content. Although none of the demos I tried allowed for direct user input— e.g. they weren’t video games— I still got to feel complete immersion in the sense that I could look in whichever direction I chose. It was also nice that they made sure the headsets and headphones were sanitized in between the use of each user!

At Silicon Beach Fest, there was a VR Lounge that featured booths by 360 Rize, Specular Theory, Defrost VR, and AT&T DirectVR. One of the featured simulations even allowed users to fly through the Silicon Beach Fest Boardwalk in 3D!

Photo, right, is Kluge designer Abraham Aguero, who is watching the SiliconBeach Fest VR experience that he created. Fly through the SBF 3D boardwalk HERE.

The demos I tried included one in which I found myself watching protagonist Snake complete a stealth mission within the narrative of the video game Metal Gear Solid; one in which I watched a surfer take on some gnarly waves; one in which I followed a music video being filmed from room-to-room; and one in which I was an attendee to a hellish children’s birthday party, replete with dark rooms, clowns, and carnies, the latter two of which were attempting with all their might to give me nightmares.

SHARK TANK ALUMNI Hear about several LA/Silicon Beach startups that appeared on the TV show Shark Tank.

Who Was There? John Ritcher (CEO/founder of Cinecore), John Tabis (CEO/founder of The Bouqs Co.), Kelley Weaver (CEO/founder of Pursecase), Sean Knecht (CMO of Pridebites), Hanna and Mark Lim (founders of Lollaland), Ray Phillips (CEO/ founder of Soapsox), and Charles Yim (CEO of Breathometer). By Daniel Steingold

SHARK TANK SECRETS

In terms of the benefits of going on the show, there’s no secret: they’re vast, perhaps even Millions of people watch Shark Tank, but few of infinite. Tabis mentioned that every time there is us actually know what goes on. Unlike what’s a rerun of the episode he is on, he gets an influx shown on TV, some pitches are over two hours in of traffic to his company’s website. The Story

Even the “tank” that is shown on TV is deceptive Yim is the only contestant in the history of the — it’s really just a TV monitor. Still, the pressure show to get all five sharks to invest in his company. eats away at some people, particularly when a He didn’t specifically divulge any secrets. shark gives you the death stare, or multiple sharks talk over one another. One contestant on the show, notoriously, even passed out.

So What’s the Secret?

One common theme mentioned amongst the panel was persistence. This is because the coordinator told I was able to have a brief conversation with Mark Phillips he’d ensure that he would be on the show. Lim of Lollacup. Here are some of the highlights of our correspondence. • Lim knew most of the other alumni prior to the panel. He called the group of Shark Tank panelists a “somewhat of a mini family,” and he’s “never had a Shark Tank alum who refused a meeting or phone call.” He says, “We try to help each other as much as possible.” • Lim called Shark Tank “a gateway to getting solid press.” Since appearing, he’s gotten mentions on The View, Kiplinger’s, Forbes, and World News. He hopes that “over time people will view us as a quality baby product brand that is here for the long haul.”

• He called the atmosphere at Silicon Beach Fest “very welcoming” and “laid back whereas most of the other startup events feel a little more cutthroat.” SILICON BEACH MAGAZINE

DATING APP TIPS

Founders of dating apps gave advice on how you can improve your online dating success.

Who Was There?

A panel of four female founders or CEOs of dating apps presented on Thursday afternoon. They included Talia Goldstein (of Three Day Rule), Julie Spira (of Cyber-Dating Expert), Jennifer Kelton (of BOD Dating App), and Kelly Steckelberg (of Zoosk).

By Daniel Steingold

HOW TO DATE ONLINE RIGHT! “Both the girl and guy had deplorable experiences on their date that night, but fortunately, they were able to find each other on the app a few months later. The two have now been married for a year and a half.“

What Stories (Crazy or Not) Did They Share? Goldstein’s core idea behind Three Day Rule came from her observation that many of the ex-partners of her clients had similar features, particularly in terms of face shape. Once they hired a CTO and developed and implemented the technology behind facial feature-based matchmaking, Match.com invested in Three Day Rule. Now based all across the U.S., the company has never looked back. Kelton of BOD has a unique app: it allows you to split on a bad date, helping you find a new partner nearby so you “can move on with your night.” The story that Kelton highlighted, however, took place through the dating app OkCupid. Here it goes: a single man and woman saw each other at a cafe in Marina del Rey, initially thinking one another was their OkCupid date. They had a mutually enjoyable conversation, but parted once their actual dates came. Both the girl and guy had deplorable experiences on their date that night, but fortunately, they were able to find each other on the app a few months later. The two have now been married for a year and a half.

What Were Their Tips? • Use a full-body shot as your profile picture on dating apps— they increase your likelihood of getting a response by 200%. Avoid making group photos your profile pic, as this will decrease your likelihood of getting a response by 50%. • Don’t have pets in your pictures on a dating app. • Describe and show yourself authentically on dating apps. Don’t have pictures of you partying on your profile. • Don’t use selfies or Snapchat filters on your dating profile. • Men should wear blue or a warm color to attract dates. • Women who wear red get more dates, along with more money spent on them during those dates. • Men tend to like women wearing a lot of makeup in their photos, but don’t like it, as much, in-person. • Use your intuition when deciding to go on a date with someone. Don’t be afraid to cancel. • If you’re the first person to message, include a question in your message. This will make it more likely you’ll get a reply. • Also keep in mind that your initial message should be short— absolutely no longer than five sentences. • Be aware: political differences can be a deal breaker.

KEVIN WINSTON UP CLOSE

By Daniel Steingold

Kevin Winston likes to push boundaries, so when I speak to him on the phone on a Thursday afternoon following the conclusion of the Silicon Beach Fest, I take no surprise when he deems Beverly Hills, his place of residence, to be part of Silicon Beach.

Silicon Beach Fest planned for November. (While he is unsure as to exactly where the smaller Fest will be held, he tells me it won’t be on the Westside. He has previously held the November event in Pasadena, Hollywood, and Downtown.)

I eventually concede, accepting his broader definition of Silicon Beach: all of Los Angeles. Although Kevin is a busy man, he takes a lot of time to simply enjoy life, making sure he goes When we talk about more substantive matters, to the beach, hangs with friends, and attends he quickly informs me that he likes to attend as movie screenings on a regular basis. He is able many networking events in LA—ahem, Silicon to avoid keeping a formal calendar by mentally Beach— as he can, going to two to three almost scheduling his happenings into two-hour every day. blocks— a skill he learned while working at Fox Interactive Media. After all, he heads Digital LA, which calls itself “the largest networking organization based in He also plans to do some more school outreach LA,” running at least one to two events a week, to expand upon his success with connecting on average. It becomes clear he has no plans to with the UCLA and USC communities. cease running as many events as he can, with a smaller-scale version of the just-concluded

DRIVING SILICON BEACH FEST 2016 HUGE success A HUGE SUCCESS For those looking for a quick TL;DR on Mr. Winston, he nearly perfectly embodies the mantra “work hard, play hard.” This becomes evident in how he seamlessly transitions from one thought to the next: he can go from talking about his life philosophy and concrete aspirations to telling me about how he’s arduously— and proudly— leveled up his Arcanine in Pokemon Go.

What Kevin finds to be most exciting about the growth of Silicon Beach is its development from being virtually nothing to becoming an industry hotspot. He’s personally known a number of companies in the area who have become “unicorns”— obtaining a market valuation of at least $1 billion— before being acquired, including Dollar Shave Club and Lootcrate.

TOP Influencer Kevin was named one of the “500 Most Influential People in Los Angeles” this year by the Los Angeles Business Journal, an honor he doesn’t take lightly. Kevin, who is from Seattle, plans to expand the Digital LA brand beyond Los Angeles; he has already done startup events all around the world from Austin to Cannes, and from Berlin to Rio de Janeiro.

KLUGE

By Ashley Teale

A look at the creative design firm behind the 3D Virtual Reality City for Slicon Beach Fest 2016 In this day and age, with thousands of businesses vying to stand apart from the other, distinct branding is what helps make a business special. Potential clients want to see a high level of creativity and imagination put into how a service presents itself.

Kluge, a 2016 Summit Creative Award winner, has achieved notoriety throughout the design industry based on innovative digital branding work done for various services, including Ion Pacific, Opera, and Telesign. Perez is proud that Kluge allows him to coalesce his passions for business, entrepreneurship, design, music and philosophy.

Arturo Perez, CEO and Founder of Kluge Interactive, understands that. He aims to deliver each time for his ever-expanding roster of B2B clients. To his credit, he's been A veteran of the industry for years, Perez got succeeding for the better part of his start as a consultant. His experience with eight years. steering businesses in the right direction instilled him with a strong sense of strategy. According to Kluge's official site, they are a It's not just what a business does. It's, why, “versatile, cross-functional, digitally focused how, and when. For Perez, it wasn't just the collective of designers, engineers, strategists lessons learned via consultation that helped and storytellers dedicated to the B2B space. form Kluge's ethos, however.

Inspired by Personal Experience

Perez ran an online music outlet named Kludge for over six years. He covered a wide range of music in the independent scene, gaining a reputation for quality long form writing. The time Perez spent running Kludge helped deepen his understanding and appreciation for creativity.

Arturo Perez, CEO, Kluge Interactive, pictured on right.

3D City APP HERE

Though Kludge was an editorial outlet, Perez was already using it to help hone his B2B expertise. According to the outlet's Wikipedia page, Kludge had several partnerships with Virgin Megastores to promote and brand artists. Not only that, working with a staff of over 20 writers and editors gave Perez the experience needed to provide proper leadership to Kluge's staff. Kludge ceased publication in 2006, but the name lives on through Kluge—in a sense.

Kluge Interactive works hard as a unit, but sees the value in working with everyone in the local design community. Perez hosts a series in L.A. called “Co-Evenings on the Loft.” Perez calls it a quarterly design salon, bringing together the best and brightest minds in the L.A. design community. Each event has a theme, which is tied into the food and cocktails served for the night. It would be easy for Kluge's team to keep their wealth of information solely for each other, but Perez sees the benefit in shared discussion. Ideas are raised around philosophy, ethics and aesthetics, drones, wearables and virtual reality—among many other things. He values the mutual learning these sessions engender, and hopes to continue them in the foreseeable future.

3D: Design, Drive, Discussion Kluge Interactive has carried the name well, engineering a bevy of digital branding exploits, perhaps most notably a 3D virtual reality city for the Silicon Beach Fest 2016. Kluge has been the creative director of the Fest for four years, and desire to do something new each year. Earlier this year, their Creative Director devised a project based on his Grandmother's painting, and their CTO designed an app for it. That was one of their first VR projects. When it came time to plan for the Fest, Kluge analyzed the market and realized the 3D city is the route they wanted to go. Perez then rallied his team to work hard enough to submit the project to the App Store in time for the Fest.

What's next for Perez? Kluge is continuing their work with many clients, such as Telesign, who Perez views more as an artistic partner than the typical client. They're also debuting a Design LA Mobile App, which is devised to further unite designers in the L.A. area. He's also holding a “Co-Evenings” session at the Herman Miller Showroom in Culver City in November. Be there! More details about the event HERE Photo credit by Justin Lai. SILICON BEACH MAGAZINE
